The city has fallen. For Elias, the hardest fight is only starting.
Nothing went the way it was supposed to. Anna, Kira, Jonas — separated, missing, maybe dead. The last remnants of order are burning down, and Elias is on his own for the first exhausted, hunted, and haunted by one question he can't shake. Is there anyone left worth fighting for?
But standing still is how you die.
So he moves. Through a country where the rules are gone and the survivors are learning what they're capable of. New allies find him — and every one of them wants something. Because in this world, trust is a currency, and some decisions can't be taken back. Not the ones he makes. And not the ones made for him.
The infected never stop coming. But they're not what keeps Elias awake at night.
Survive is the sequel to Escape — Book 2 in the Zombie Virus LYRV-27 series. The outbreak was only the beginning.
I enjoy zombie stories, I enjoy them a lot. What I don't enjoy, across any genre, is when authors force create dramatic situations. Timing and pacing are very important concepts.
In this case, the story follows directly from book one - but everything goes up in flames almost from the first page. The first night that the intrepid four are let out of observation, day four in the bunker, there's infections inside. For the prior weeks or however long it's been, the bunker has held. Now as soon as these four arrive there's a breach. A breach that isn't even explained or anything. Since there's an infected around the corner already. Elias gets a little separated, doesn't call out even once for his friends. He just runs for his life and escapes to houses right by the base. Still not bothering much about his people.
Later on it's rinse and repeat with him trying to find supplies.
The monastery guys searching for supplies is pretty funny - they know the infected are evolving, they know sound attracts them - yet their chosen option is smashing glass and doors down with a big hammer. Okay cool.
When Elias gets tired of playing house and decides to go out looking for his people, he loses his car almost immediately because he goes to a fogged up bridge. Can't see anything. And has to jump into the water or be killed. Losing his vehicle and supplies. A fool.
He comes across Fiona on a roof. Surrounded by infected. He comes up with an asinine plan which I still don't understand. It involved hooting to attract the infected then running then over. Which OBVIOUSLY caused damage to his (newly found) car. He once again crashes the car and airbags pop, he has to leave that behind too. Is this exact thing going to happen in every book? Anyway he eventually rescues Fiona who doesn't say a word - let alone warn him that she had just escaped from a group of dangerous men who would likely still be looking for her. They take about 30 steps before being captured by said men. A little info would have helped. It's not like Fiona can pull the "I didn't know if you were trustworthy" card, since she admits later that she saw how Elias fought to save her.
Turns out these guys knew that Fiona's father is Riemer from the base & needed evac. Bit of a stretch. They escape through a conveniently unlocked front door, Elias is stabbed and bleeding again.
Grab a car at night then end up being followed by the men in another car - I mean sound & headlights in the dark - shocking I know. Along the way picking up zombie followers. They eventually lose the human pursuers, car runs out of gas and he finds his way to the path to the monastery. While knowingly being pursued by zombies. What do you think would happen next? Yeah exactly that.
They reach the monastery, safe, kill a couple zombies but the next day a horde starts arriving. Elias surmises it's due to his spilt blood which they can smell. Takes them two days to come up with a plan. About the lake. Now here I thought the plan would be for someone to lure the horde to the lake and drown them. I was wrong, the plan is to escape to the lake and a tiny island in the middle. You decide which is a better idea.
The third day while prep is ongoing, someone loses their mind & opens the unlocked gate which allows the zombies in. Note that prior to this they didn't even have guards on the wall. Suffice it say, everyone starts running, no plan, many die including named known characters and a handful end up on the island. The end. I don't know if I'll pick up book 3.

Zombie Virus LYRV-27 book 2 brings us back to Elias and his group, but they're rapidly separated by unexpected events, leaving Elias wounded and alone. The writing is great, Elias is an especially relatable character, far more relatable than the average character in a zombie apocalypse novel. I had high hopes for this book and was not disappointed! Overall, 5/5 stars, highly recommended to any fan of apocalyptic thrillers and shows like The Last Of Us and The Walking Dead! No fan of zombie horror will regret starting, and definitely continuing zombie Virus LYRV-27!
I'm impatiently waiting for the next in this series. Although there's not an annoying cliff hanger as such, there are hints of future plot lines that I'm looking forward to seeing.
If you like zombie apocalypse settings this is the series for you. Likeable characters, good pacing. Not set in America, so you get a feel for Europe. I have really enjoyed this series.
Exciting zombie story . Could not stop till it was finished, it's now the early hours of the morning and I most not download the next book yet or I'll get no sleep at all ...
Book 2 was just as good as book 1. The terror, loneliness, gravity of the situation, even when one feels safe, is always there. I could feel it through the entire story. On to book 3!!!
The saga continues for Elias as he searches for his friends. Friedhof paints a bleak and dangerous world with words. The characters are believable and likable. Friedhof skillfully builds anticipation and makes this sequel a riveting page-turner.
Really awesome book! I love that this series is about a fallible guy who’s doing his best in a crazy time, and not a spec ops badass. So good! Can’t wait to read the next one!
I am so burned out on zombie fiction, I almost didn’t download this series. So glad I did. It’s zombies, of course, but different enough and well written.
