By day I work in sales, always in motion, always talking or writing my way through a conversation with someone. I started reading contemporary romance in 2021 and got hooked: slow burn, he-falls-first, forbidden tension, enemies to lovers, friends to lovers, all of it. Ana Huang and T.L. Swan are a big part of why I fell so hard for the genre, and why I eventually decided to write the books I always wanted to read.
When I'm not writing (or reading), you'll probably find me at home with my husband and daughter, planning the next trip, out on a paddleboard, or at the gym.

Chiara York’s debut novel, The Circuit, is one of the most tension-filled slow burn romances I’ve ever read. There are three main characters in this book: Ana, James, and Tension. You could cut it with a knife it was so palpable.
Ana and James follow each other (sometimes accidentally, other times not) across Europe as their respective jobs take them from conference to conference, always in the same room but rarely the same conversation. They are incredibly similar characters: both highly logical and analytical, both priding themselves on being perfectly poised and perfectly professional at all times. Their problem? Their instant chemistry threatens to ruin that. Oh, and also Ana works for James’ academic rival and also he is a CEO while she is not and misogyny hangs over her like a black cloud because, let’s face it, people are always looking for an excuse to say that a woman didn’t work for what she has. If they can say she slept her way into a sale, they will.
When their chemistry and its resultant tension becomes too much, they decide to give in but only under six very strict rules, the most important of which requires them to keep their relationship to themselves and act purely professional when in public. Of course, it’s a romance; those rules aren’t going to hold!
What results is more tension, a little heartache, and an eventual realisation that maybe love is the most important thing of all! (But also it helps if you made your billions before you turned forty. Don’t go following James, people!)
At times, I found Ana and James incredibly frustrating. Their analytical voices meant that they recalled each interaction like a process. They gave a summary, then the breakdown. They denied their own feelings, both regularly speaking about how they ‘file’ details and emotions away as “irrelevant”. As a reader who so clearly sees that their chemistry is not going to fizzle out, you want to knock some sense into them both and ask why on earth they’re being so difficult?! But you can’t, because you’re a reader and they’re fictional characters and they have to make their own way there. And they do! So that’s our prize. They both take the ‘idiots to lovers’ trope to the next level, even though they’re both highly intelligent people. Sometimes, the smartest cookies are also the ones who don’t see what’s right in front of them.
There is a lot of industry talk in this book and I didn’t understand any of it, so I did feel a little not-smart myself at times. I didn’t really need to know though; the point was that Ana knew and James knew and they made their right decisions at the right times.
Ana has a close group of girl friends that we’ll meet more of in later books. She speaks of them in the same way throughout the book, fitting them into very specific boxes that can, at times, leave you with a lot of questions about who they are outside of being Ana’s Friends. Giulia and Sofia, in particular, gave off a slightly mysterious/‘we’re not seeing all there is to these characters’ vibe, so I’ll be interested to learn more about them in their own books. Ana’s friends are constantly there for her, and I’d be interested to see how they talk about her in their own books. We don’t get much background on Ana, and never meet her family although her parents are mentioned, so I’d like to learn more about her in later books.
If you’re looking for a very tense slow burn with great chemistry and a man who really yearns, The Circuit could be the book for you.

The Circuit is a solid debut that combines workplace rivals, billionaire romance, and plenty of chemistry. It wasn’t a perfect read for me, but I still had a good time with it.
Ana is a sales director who has worked incredibly hard to build her career and sees her job as the most important part of her life. James is the billionaire CEO of a competing telecom company. Technically they’re rivals, but they keep crossing paths at industry conferences, and it’s obvious from the start that the chemistry is there. Because of their competing companies, and Ana’s concerns about how a relationship with James could affect her professional reputation, they do their best to stay away from each other…until they can’t.
I really liked Ana and James, both individually and together. They’re two ambitious people who have always put their careers first, only to start questioning whether that’s really enough. I loved watching them slowly let each other in. They try to convince themselves they can keep things as a friends-with-benefits arrangement, but this is a romance novel, so we all know how that ends. Their secret rendezvous were some of my favorite parts of the book, and it was fun watching their feelings grow into something more.
If I’m being honest, (and this could be a me thing) my biggest struggle was the writing style, especially in the beginning. It took me a while to adjust because many of the sentences are very short, and the pacing of the prose sometimes felt a little abrupt or stilted. Once I settled into the author’s style, though, I barely noticed it anymore, and the story flowed much more naturally as the story progressed. I’d encourage readers to stick with it because I do think it improves as the book goes on.
The spice is definitely there, although I did find those scenes became a bit repetitive after a while. They weren’t bad by any means, I just wished there had been a little more variety.
Overall, I think this is a really good debut. If you enjoy workplace romances, billionaire MMCs, secret relationships, and two career-driven people figuring out there’s more to life than work, I think this one is worth checking out.

Plot: The Circuit is a contemporary romance book which follows the story of Ana Marcovici and James Vance. Ana is the Sales Director in Sentinel Analytics and James is the CEO of Vance Global Telecom. One day, at MWC Barcelona, Ana and James met for the first time. How they met is the interesting part. Ana corrected James of his mistake in one of the panel and he called it an interesting perspective. This one meeting changed their life and they are not the same anymore. Constantine is the owner of Sentinel Analytics, who turns out to be James's rival since their college days. And Ana works for him. Also James and Ana are in the same industry. So the world is against them. Is it possible for them to stop their attraction towards one another? We finds out this in the following story.
My thoughts: I really loved this book and its plot. I love to read a book with strong female character and in this book, both Ana and James have strong personalities and character. I love the fact that James was so clear about his feelings and tried to understand Ana's fears as well. The writing is also good. The author did so well with the characters , their emotions, their struggles. I also love that there is no misunderstandings between main characters which many romance books have. The female friendship is also done well. I liked their dynamics and relation with one another.
I didn't knew till the end that it is a series. Now, I am excited to read the second book when it releases.
I recommend this book to someone who likes slow burn contemporary work romance.

I loved how their relationship started with mutual respect. Instead of being intimidated when she challenged him during a conference, he admired her intelligence and confidence, and that became the foundation of their connection. The slow burn was incredibly well done, making every interaction feel meaningful as they traveled together for work and tried to keep their growing attraction under control.
Both characters are driven, competent, and genuinely passionate about their careers, which made their romance feel realistic rather than all consuming. Watching something that was meant to be casual slowly turn into something much deeper was my favorite part of the story.

Meet Ana, who is very determined to make a name for herself in the cybersecurity world. She’s brilliant, analytical and makes almost everything a business transaction, even dating in secrecy. She first meets James at a conference, when she corrects him during a panel discussion. What starts as a hate relationship slowly moves into something more, but neither one wants to admit to the incredible chemistry they have or their growing feelings.
James hates Ana’s employer. There is a backstory between them. He tries to stay away from Ana, but their chemistry and banter just draws him back to her. He realizes long before Ana that he wants more from their secret and spicy relationship

I recently finished watching The Good Wife on Paramount+ and was immediately looking for a fun tension filled workplace romance. The Circuit was an easy choice that did not disappoint.
I personally love a good forbidden romance with an MMC, James, who supposedly does nothing wrong but gets corrected by the attractive FMC , Ana, who just so happens to work in the same industry.
There was so much tension between James and Ana from the start. It doesn’t help that James hates the company Ana works for, but he just can’t seem to stay away from her.
They obviously give in to the pressure, but want to keep things professional so they create ground rules to avoid losing their careers. The only issue is feelings are developing as they go from city to city.

Ana is a genuinely great heroine, funny and guarded with real stakes tied to her ambition, James holds his own as more than just a hot exec, and when the central conflict arrives it's a legitimate clash over power and trust rather than a manufactured misunderstanding. I know it is a romance first, but I found myself wanting to replicate Ana and James’ travels. Maybe read each part of The Circuit as you travel it! Oh the billionaire dreams I have.
While stuck on my Canadian couch, I was transported on a journey and James’ love of architecture helped bring more of it to life.
Ana is a strong, confident and knows her business. Enough to publicly correct a CEO on a point in his presentation.
There is some spice in this story. I found it to be quite similar spice for the most part, but fun spice either way.
I found the writing a little bit stilted, at the beginning, but somewhere along the way it grew on me and I stopped noticing it.
Overall an enticing romance that takes you through The Circuit on a wobbly path to love.
We, also, get more! Looking forward to the next in the interconnected, but completely standalone, series.

I received this book from the author and understand it is her debut. One thing that made it difficult for me was that I could not read it on my kindle and had to read it on Google Play books which wasnt terrible, but not great either.
This was a good workplace romance that had a lot of tension but at times I didn't feel like the story flowed very well.
I was also confused at some times when they talked about their jobs and couldn't get into that.
I did love the amount of travel that they did and found myself jealous and wanting to visit all of those places.
You could cut the tension with a knife from the very beginning and the tension always makes the final straw worth it! The back and forth with them was great.
This was a good workplace romance that had a lot of tension but at times I didn't feel like the story flowed very well.

This was a fun, spicy forbidden romance to read. I give it a solid 3.5. The storyline was intriguing but there were some stumbling blocks for me. This story is set in Europe, mainly Eastern Europe around an industry that largely doesn’t exist in America. There were multiple times I had to stop and google terminology, the Eastern European Telecom industry, and measurement conversions to better understand what I was reading. Overall I enjoyed the story despite those stumbling blocks.

I can't even force myself to spend the hour it would take to finish.
I cannot stand the characters talking to each other in 1-3 word sentences the entire time. And I'm supposed to believe they're falling in love? To be fair, the writing in general is choppy, 2-3 word sentences with the same phrases used over and over. It felt like every encounter in each city was copy/paste from the last one. Why does every restaurant they go to only have 6 tables?! I just can't do it.

4.5 stars! Ana and James both traveling for work and both ending up at the same places. It is a slow burn and the payoff is well worth the wait. The banter and flow of the story are beautifully done. Rules were made and rules were broken. I loved how two people that were supposed to be together fell in love and the spicy parts don’t take away from the story. Amazing read!!
