El embrujo del Merlot

Rate this book

Hello!
I wrote The Twelve Dates of Christmas, You Had Me at Merlot and Catch Me If You Cannes. Hope you like them. You look super-nice today.

Oh, here's the official bio:

Lisa Dickenson was born in the wrong body. She was definitely meant to be Beyonce. Despite this hardship, she grew up in Devon attempting to write her own, completely copyright-infringing versions of Sweet Valley High, before giving Wales a go for university, and then London a go for the celeb-spotting potential. She's now back in Devon, living beside the seaside with her husband and forcing cream teas down the mouths of anyone who'll visit. She is sadly still not Beyonce.

Ever read a book where you're pretty sure you and the author would hit it off and be best friends? Yeah, that's me and this book!

Loved the story, the hysterical characters and the setting - Italy, one of my favorite places on Earth.

The stars aligned and I was in the perfect mood for this book. It was exactly what I was looking for.

A perfect quick, light and funny beach read.

¿No suena genial?

My mother always told me to try and say something nice about things if you're going to go on and say nasty things ab out them, so following my mother's advice.... there were some nice bright colours on the cover.

The biggest mistake I made after that was actually opening the cover, and proceeding to read this completely and utterly cringeworthy offering. And then, I made 400 or so more mistakes by turning every page. Why oh why oh why did I give up so much of my life to this embarrassing drivel?

It is the unlikely (and as with most of the book, pretty unexplained) tale of two women going on a singles holiday to a vineyard in Italy. Just as unlikely, one of the women's boss turns up there as well. Then people fall in love, they fall out of love, people turn up inexplicably, people get offered jobs on stupid salaries in unlikely places for no reason, ridiculous accidents happen, people jump to life changing conclusions on the back of half sentences... and fairly supposedly mature people ask banal questions to members of the opposite sex like "can I be your girlfriend"? It's puerile, 7 year old stuff, written by a 7 year old (or so it seemed) for other 7 year olds.

Logic, rationality, consistent characterization and vaguely believable plot lines are non extant here. Why and how did someone publish this pile of dung - unfair on dung actually, it does have a part to play in the world; this book doesn't. Still, if anything good has come out of this - I suspect I've extended the range of worst books ever read.

There ought to be a minus mark available on this site so that the (fortunately very rare) odd appalling offering like this can be flagged up so that everyone else is spared the pain of reading it.

Elle's work was possibly too good to be true. While it leads you to believe Jamie is too at one point. In Italy though she seems so much happier same with her former boss Donna. Laurie is fantastic from the off. George grows on you. Elle did not expect the ending for herself.

Guys, after being published in four parts, "You Had Me at Merlot" is finally out in paperback, in all its shiny glory, and it looks gorgeous! I still can remember how much joy it was for me to download each part to my kindle and escape for an hour or two to the sunny, full of scents Italy, but it was also incredible joy to eventually see it as a whole novel and re - read it. This book belongs to the highest category of funny, funny with a big F, tactful funny, hilariously funny, laughing out loud funny, making you cry with laughter funny. My kinda funny, absolutely.
And Lisa herself is one of the funniest, warmest person EVER. I often cry with laughter reading her one - liners on Twitter, so just imagine what's she done to me writing a whole book. I was in stitches. Lisa has incredible way of creating FUN out of a very ordinary sentence and describing situations that could be dull in a most witty way, and inventing situations that had me shaking my head, kicking my legs, gasping, rolling, together with a very honest, belly - laugh.

The book introduces us to Elle. Elle is single, she enjoys being single in fact, she has a job that she loves and is good at and she hopes for a promotion soon. Elle's best friend Laurie is also single but she starts thinking that perhaps it's time to settle down. So Laurie, using many different arguments, persuades Elle to go on holiday with her. Tasting wine, driving Vespas, hot sun... And do not forget that it's holidays for singles.
Elle isn't thrilled but with Laurie's persuading skills she soon finds herself on a plane to Italy. A very eventful plane. Of course, Elle is going to enjoy only wine, vespas and hot sun, she doesn't believe in relationships, for sure not in a relationship with somebody that she knows only for few days and is going to leave this part of You Had Me at Merlot holidays for Laurie. On the other hand, holidays under the sun, with a glass of wine in one hand and best friend - it can't be too bad, can it? But well, life - as usual - is full of surprises and hey, never say never!
And here starts the best holidays EVER. Holiday full of, yes, wine, Vespas and hot sun, but also many, many embarrassing situations, many new friends, attractions prepared by the owner of the hotel, hot men, unexpected visits from ex - girlfriends, playing spies and making wine with their own feet. And co - singles, in the form of Elle's boss, who arrives screaming and kicking, for a good start. Dream holiday, isn't it?

I fell in love with Elle and Laurie from the very beginning. Laurie became my hero after her Botox incident, it was HILARIOUS! Elle, with her down - to - earth, doesn't give a damn attitude could be my new book best friend. She was incredibly funny, incredibly clever, incredibly loyal and incredibly gullible and incredibly prone to accident, let's mention only her photo session at the museum or her Vespa ride. Only two out of the very, very many, one more ridiculous than the other.

The owners of You Had Me at Merlot were sweet and charming and I can't imagine now a better idea for my holidays, I could pretend I'm single for ten days, no problem. The attractions they prepared for their guests were brilliant, Sebastian with his direct attitude was just the best!
And Jamie. Helloooo!!! I had lots of luck lately for the best male characters in the books ever but Jamie is just THE best. He's not only sexy as hell, he doesn't only look like a Love God, but he can make his own wine AND chocolate. Did all my dreams come true at once? AND he has a dog, leonberger. AND he's witty. But also stubborn. Oh yes, there were moments that I wanted to shake him strongly.
All the characters were livid, just popping out of the pages and coming to life next to you. All the other singletons on the holidays, even Elle's devil boss, who then appeared to be not devil at all, were fantastic, I giggled over them and their adventures, and especially over relentless in adoration lothario George. He was amazeballs! Lisa can create wonderful heroes that feel warm and totally realistic and are the most funny people in the world. The dialogues, the banter between them, the one - liners were one of the best I have ever read, and I know that I said it few times this year, but those are really THE BEST.

The book has absolutely the right pace and is a real page - turner. It belongs to this category of books that I want to finish asap but don't want them to end. Every page brought more sun and more warmth than the other, more laughter and more positive feelings. It had me hooked from the get - go and took me on a brilliant, adventurous and full of surprises and beautiful sights journey to Tuscany.
Lisa's humour is actually beyond description, what I would do to be at least half as funny as she is! But it's not only the humour that won me over, it is also the story, the plot which is simple but hooking and worked out for me, and the writing style: fresh, modern, fast, light, easy to follow and gripping too.

You Had Me at Merlot is as sunny as Tuscany itself and as tasty as the chilli wine made by Jamie. It is a MUST read for this summer, and not only for summer. It absolutely belongs on my FAVOURITE shelf. And I will never be able to drink wine again without giggling over blind - fold wine testing. A warm, uplifting read, a feel - good read, with quirky characters, plenty of good humour, funny scenes and drooling over Jamie - highly, highly recommended.

PS. Please DO NOT count how often I used the words "funny", "the best" and "ever" in this review. Pretty please.

I honestly dont know where all the 4 and 5 stars are coming from or how the author managed to get this book published in the first place. Badly written childish story from someone who is trying desperately to stay relevant.

I would have never gone past the first paragraph but as I was given this book from a friend for Christmas I felt obliged to finish it! Luckily i didnt have any other book on holiday with me so I had no choice!

Elle is happy being single. She spends most time at her job anyway, leaving her almost no time for a love life. Also, she loves not having to share the little things in life with someone. Life is just easier this way. Her friend Laurie is also single, but she is unlike Elle and desperately wants to find true love.

So when Laurie begs Elle to go on vacation with her to a singles’ holiday at a Tuscan winery called You Had Me at Merlot, Elle begrudgingly says yes. While Laurie is off trying to find a hunk for herself, Elle will enjoy the beautiful sights and delicious wine. No men for her whatsoever.

Luckily the winery is absolutely stunning and the wine is equally as enjoyable. This will be a perfect holiday—ten days away from Elle’s life-consuming job. That is, until Elle’s most intimidating boss, Donna, also shows up at the same singles’ retreat! It appears even leaving the country doesn’t keep Elle’s work away.

On their first night there, Elle literally runs into a handsome Italian god. Turns out he’s not one of the guests, but the owners son, Jamie. And they seem to have a flirtatious connection. Although Elle has sworn off dating, she can’t help but form a connection with Jamie.

But her sudden romance with Jamie is a little more complicated than Elle thought. And even though she didn’t want a relationship to begin with, she’s left feeling more than a little torn.

You Had Me at Merlot by Lisa Dickenson is a funny, light-hearted, adventurous read. Lisa Dickenson’s books are like a cute rom-com that put you in a good mood. They’re short, sweet and nothing too heavy. Whenever I need a palette cleanser from hard-hitting books or thrillers, they always do the trick! 3.5/5 stars.

This was a totally fun and light read. It’s perfect for a beach read and it really gets you into the holiday and summer feeling.

This book was funny and introduces you to lovely characters. It will make you crave pizza, wine and everything Italian.

The story is set in a vineyard in Tuscany and is a pure chick-lit, which will put you in a good and happy mood throughout the whole story.

I can’t quite contain my excitement at this book. My initial thoughts were ‘I wonder if I can get away with just putting ‘BUY THIS BOOK NOW’ at size 72pt text as my review, but think I owe it to Lisa Dickenson, the publishers and, of course, you guys, my adoring public to put into words how just much I loved this book.

I read and really enjoyed Lisa’s last book ‘The Twelve Dates of Christmas’ a lot, but this one was on another level of awesomeness. I mean it has wine in the title, so it was perhaps destined to be a favourite, but actually this both excited me and made me a bit apprehensive. Let me explain, simply put I LOVE WINE, and equally I love New York (I’ve wrote articles about just how much), and there has been a book in the last year that I’ve read that is set in Manhattan, and most people wouldn’t notice, but I did spot a street where somewhere lived, that simply doesn’t exist in real life, it would put you int he middle of central park, and while it may be on purpose, it niggled with me for the rest of the book. I was therefore a little nervous about this book, being about wine, where I know (probably) more than the average person and I certainly know more about wine than I do about NY, but Lisa’s research was pretty impeccable and the book was pretty accurate in that area, so I breathed a sigh of relief (while getting excited about future plans in getting my diploma in wine). In fact maybe I should write a book about wine, so I can research wine further, obviously.

There is only good things to say about this book. It’s absolutely hilarious. Laurie and Elle have a fantastic sense of humour both in their friendship and when socialising with other people. They are so at ease with themselves. The setting is incredibly picturesque, it had me dreaming of owning my own vineyard, or at least visiting someone who I know has just bought a tuscan villa with some vines on their land. The day trip to florence was also absolutely dreamy, both location wise and reading about Elle’s adventures there, especially the last stop of Elle’s personal tour from Jamie. The scene with David (the statue) however was pure comedy and had me laughing at Elle’s and Jamie’s plot to get the perfect photo.

Elle was a great lead. Not looking for romance made her more relaxed on her holiday and the tasks they do than she would have been had she been string about which suitor to pick. There are a few things that could have stressed her out (the first being at the end of part 1) but she is head strong, and generally speaking doesn’t seem to dwell on anything negative, opening her mind to make the best of any situation. It is a great quality to have, for sure. As I said, she has a great sense of humour as well. Pretty much the perfect protagonist. Sure she acts a bit hasty when upset, but who doesn’t and the trip up is so brief you can easily forget it.

Jamie is just as dreamy as the setting. Never have I wanted a bloke from a book to be real more than when reading this book, and it’s not just because he owns a vineyard, honest. I can imagine his Italian beauty, his sense of humour is also incredibly funny, there is one scene in his house that is just the funniest thing ever, but it’s also slightly teasing, in the way you are with people you like. He’s pretty much perfect, making him a great match for Elle. Mind you, I have a soft spot for Italians, they are the only people I will let call me ‘Raquel’ in their charming and sexy accent. I think it is precisely that accent that sedates my ‘kill’ instinct that normally kicks in when people call me that, though to be fair it is more to wind me up that most people do so.

The other characters at the vineyard were fantastic, Jamie’s parents, Laurie, they were all great fun to read. Especially George, he really made me laugh, and he would be a great ally to have.

Great fun from the very first page, it genuinely is hard to put down (other than occasional breaks to sip a glass (or two) of wine, naturally). Easily one of the best books I’ve read this year, I cannot recommend this book enough.

Received from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I read You Had Me at Merlot when it was released in 2014 as four-part serialized novel. It was easily one of my favorite books I read in 2014. It was brilliant from the start to the end.

In You Had Me at Merlot we meet Elle and her best friend Laurie. Elle loves her life as single: no obligations, not accountable to anyone. She is very dedicated to her work. Working as a marketing manager in a PR agency in London she gives up a lot free time get a better position in the company. Laurie is quite the opposite of her. She is ready to settle down, finding someone to marry, to grow old with and get kids. Laurie thinks that a holiday is what they both need, not just an ordinary holiday. Laurie booked a two weeks single holiday in the Tuscany, expecting lots of sunshine, beautiful scenery, lots of wine and hot single men. You can imagine how happy Elle was about this. Although, wouldn't you do anything to make your best friend happy? After a turbulent flight they finally arrive safely in Italy and start the preparations for the first evening, the so called "Meet & Greet" with the other participants. Before the meeting, Elle bumps into to a very handsome man, called Jamie, who has awaken Elle's interest. When Elle arrived at Bella Notte she didn't plan on falling for anyone on this single's holiday but sometimes things are not going as planned. Will this holiday change Elle's mind about her life and relationships?

You Had Me at Merlot is a real page turner and it kept me entertained the whole way through the story. I couldn't believe when I hit the last page so soon. I didn’t want this story to end. This book has everything I love about a good story – memorable characters, a gorgeous setting and twists and turns. I loved the descriptions of the Tuscany, the get-togethers of the participants: from blindfolded wine tasting to crushing grapes barefoot. This is where guests will be matched up and has a chance to get to know each other better. In this book there are a few characters named alongside Elle and Laurie. They’re all really memorable and we learn just enough about them all individually. The strong development of several characters was something I found really impressive.

You Had Me at Merlot is a really fun and refreshing read, a novel filled with humor, hilarious laugh out loud moments and a sprinkling romance. The writing is easy to follow and flows well throughout leaving you eager to find out what could possibly comes next. Lisa Dickenson manages to draw you in the story so quickly which makes it so easy to connect to the characters. The most amazing thing is Elle's and Laurie's wonderful bond of friendship.

I'm very happy I've been introduced to Lisa Dickenson through the book blogging community. She is a brilliant writer with so much talent. If you need a book that’s cracks you up laughing out loud, You Had Me at Merlot is your choice. There is no better book to be taken away on holiday with, simply the perfect choice for your summer reading. I'm looking forward reading more of her in the future.

This is my first novel by this author and if I'm honest it was the sypnosis that first caught my attention. A vineyard in tuscany(my dream vacation) romance ,wine and a vineyard it sounded like the perfect book and it turns out it was! One thing that really stood out for me was how funny it was literally the whole way through i was laughing and not to myself I'm talking laughing fits of hysteria (my family think I'm slightly loosing the plot I'm sure) it was one of them books you didn't want to put down because it was just so awesome. The plot centers around Elle single and perfectly content not to have a man in her life and best friend laurie who's desperate to have a man in her life so unfortunately for Elle she's roped into a singles holiday to resort "you had me at Merlot" where they meet some interesting and hilarious people, Elle also meets the charming son Jamie who is well completely perfect and realises maybe being single isn't what she wants afterall. Theres no denying this author has a true gift she really did exceed all expectations for me.The descriptive detail was also written beautifully ,There were so many times when I was reading book when the book took me there basking under the tuscan sun drinking chilli wine and eating chocolate looking out at the beautiful vines bursting with violet grapes I wish I could just pack up and go lol It's a great book worthy of fans of Jo thomas,Jill mansell and jenny colgan i can't recommend it enough , I'll be buying all this authors books from now on

This was a really engaging book that combines friendships, the single life, wonderful locations and a wine tasting holiday with romance. Laurie and Ellie go on a singles holiday in Tuscany and you can imagine yourself in the vineyards.
It was a really quick, fun read leaving you with a wonderful summery afterglow- having enjoyed every single page. You get to know the characters really well and are rooting for them. One of those books that is impossible to put down as it draws you along , urging you to read the next page!
I will definitely be checking out Amazon to find more by Lisa Dickenson as they make the perfect holiday reads and I’m keen to treat my kindle to a few nice surprises for the beach.
With many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the chance to read this one in exchange for an honest review.

Expectativas superadas 🙌 con esta comedia romántica!!! 🥰

*Does contain some spice scenes but I wouldn’t call this 18+*

6.5/10

Another charity shop find, Barnardo's I think, and it was a decent read.

All in all, I enjoyed the storyline of someone not looking for love stumbling across it and the descriptions of the Italian scenery made me want to try it out for myself. However, while I'm presuming its aimed at an adult audience (young adults at the least) as it does contain some spice in there, the writing struck me as something that I would have read during secondary school. It was nice to read and I could connect with the characters, I just felt I wanted something a slight bit more mature in style.

I have come across a few more books with good reviews, like this one, so I think I'll give a different book a go.

Funny, light-hearted, skippy read that made me yearn for a hot summer again. (oh and yearn for alot of wine!)

Elle is happily single so when her best friend Laurie, askes her along to a singles holiday in Tuscany (much more upmarket than a club 18-30 holiday) Elle agrees but things take an unexpected turn when her boss turns up!

I really like the writing style and the characters were all very likeable, my favourite being George.

Perfect summer holiday read by the pool (if you are going on holiday and not having to quarentine due to Covid)

This was a quick and easy summer read for me. Loved the humour made in this book. I even laughed out loud a couple of times which isn’t easy for me with books. My sense of humour is not for everyone I guess. But seriously this book made me feel like I wanted to go to Italy and create some memories there with my best friends. Lay in the Italian sun and drink wine all day. It sounds amazing don’t you think 😁

I recommend this being a Summer/Beach read. Maybe even a book you read at the airport if that makes sense :)

Posta???? Dejame de joder!!!

I didn’t want to read this book at first because of the cheesy title, but the title makes perfect sense when you read it!

A short easy read, not much of a plot, and very predictable, but I loved the setting and the descriptions of the wine, the food and the surroundings.

It made me laugh out loud more than once!

Only a few books could make me laugh out loud, and this was one of them! I absolutely loved this book. It was very feel-good and summery. Every time I picked it up, it always managed to make me want to drink some wine. Highly recommend this book to any fans of rom-coms, wine, travelling, laughing out loud, and close friendships.
