Very Buried Cheesecake

Rate this book
This should be an exciting time for Annie with the opening of her new art gallery, but she’s stressed and distracted preparing for her first photography opening. With her friend Martha and her new employee, Camilla, working to get the gallery set up, everything seems to be on track.

But when Annie stumbles on a body floating at the edge of Heron Lake, her worst fears are realized. Memories of her previous photography exhibit and the ensuing murder investigation come back to haunt her.

To make matters worse, the new detective in town points her finger at Annie right from their first meeting at the crime scene. Is this an ominous sign of what’s in store for Annie? With mysterious money disappearing and stolen jewelry showing up from thin air, a pre wedding dinner cruise and Martha’s on again/off again wedding, all is not what it seems.

Now Annie struggles to avoid being sucked into the mayhem. Will she be able to put her fears aside and figure out how to stay ahead of the killer?

A delicious murder mystery, very entertaining, the storyline was a mixture of different flavors, giving it a distinctive taste. It is absolutely lovely with a afternoon cup of tea. The friendship demonstrated in this book is lovely and very moving, there were even pieces of romance. This tale was a very sweet, cozy and quaint read. After her failed relationship with the present police chief, Annie appears to be taking her time with her next relationship, which is just the thing to do and with her many friends in Black Bay things are already looking much better in that direction.

I like the characters in this book. I really like Annie and Jason as a couple. They just seem solid, both easy going, enjoying spending time together and supporting each other. I liked the story line which kept me guessing for ages. I also like the side characters Martha, the twins, their birds and all the rest. A good fast read.

3.5 stars, rounded down

I’m now four books into this series and I still haven’t decided how I feel about it. I like the *idea of the books, but I’m not sure I like the... execution? of the books. A lot of cozies are set in cafés or bakeries, so that’s not unique, and quite a few are set in New England, although I’m not sure how many of those are café-based.

I like that Annie is a photographer, preparing to open her new art gallery, which is also something different from other cozies, but something about her personality makes me cringe, and I can’t really put a finger on what that something is. I like her friends, and have apparently decided to trust their judgement about her, or I wouldn’t keep reading these books.

For a short book, there was a lot going on – a murder, a wedding, ‘society people,’ a dinner cruise, missing money and jewels, and even a new detective who seems determined to pin the blame for all of it on Annie. It was hard to keep track of who was where at what time, so I was confused about who the killer and thief might be until the clues started piling up just before the confrontation scene near the end of the book.

I will read the next book in the series, if only to see if we learn why Detective Crank has it in for Annie.

Very Buried Cheesecake is another fun Black Cat Cafe mystery. This time around, Annie Fisher and her dog, Roxy, discover a dead body in Heron Lake. It turns out to be John Holland. Annie recognizes him as someone she saw in her new Fisher Fine Art Gallery. She converted the pottery and fabric stores in the Cove's Corner building so she could show her photography, as well as quilts, and pottery. Things are going well with her boy friend, Jason, but the new detective in town, Christy Crank, has taken an instant disliking to her. With everything going on and a murder to solve, will Martha end up marrying Harry Crowley? Once again there are plenty of possible suspects and more small town fun.

I tried the first book in this series and had reservations, but I chose to give the series a chance to develop. After having read several I can say these books are too simplistic and lack development in all areas. There is almost no scene descriptions, no weather, no description of places or rooms. Character development is also lacking so people in the story keep being added but you have no idea what they do, who they are, what their emotions are. The main character being the owner of an art gallery, who is also working at a bakery as a waitress/assistant/clerk and is also a "professional" photographer feels unbelievable. There also were not enough story lines so the story felt one dimensional.

It's always a murderously fun trip back to Catfish Cove to see what's going on with Annie, her aunt Leona and all their friends in town. Martha was planning her wedding in the middle of all this as Annie found a body while out walking her dog.

With Labor Day weekend coming up as well as a wedding, Annie was once again determined to flush out the killer without becoming a casualty herself. After a good series of red herrings, I wasn't really sure whodunit, so I just read and enjoyed the hunt and showdown. I'll have to visit this series sooner next time, or I'm never going to get caught up!

Appearances can be deceptive

Tremendous. The first showing at her new art gallery has her as nervous as cat on a hot tin roof. However this gets worse when she discovers a body, the morning of her show. Diamonds, betrayal and blackmail all rear their head in this tightly woven plot. The plot had a really great kick at the end. The characters are just getting better and better as the books progress as is the romance angle. A great cozy series that really doesn't take itself too seriously.

Not cozy, just corny

Corny doesn't even cover it! Really, Detective Crank that they nicknamed Cranky......... Forced plot twists that are glaringly obvious......Cozy needn't mean juvenile but sadly, this is. I was very disappointed

Good read

A very well written new to me cozy mystery. The characters were strong but I needed a bit more color to the personalities. The plot was strong and made an interesting story.

This "quirky" series is growing on me, and it's because of the characters. One such person is Jason...I'm unsure of him, not much background on him and usually that makes me suspicious-i need to wait and see!

It isn't bad, but the ending is abrupt and it's solved-by-criminal without sufficient clues. More polish wouldn't hurt either. .

Good, but not the best

I enjoy this series and this book was pretty good until the ending. It just seemed super rushed and truly felt like it should have had more to it.

Pretty shallow, slow moving characters

Ending doesn't really resolve everything or tie up loose ends

The latest instalment in the Black Cat Cafe series has Annie juggling her time between the cafe and the new gallery she is opening (showcasing her own photography and other local artists such as Martha who makes stunning quilts and again juggles between the two business), Annie has hired a lady called Camilla to help run the Gallery but just before the grand opening she starts getting a bad feeling about her. Jason (Annie's boyfriend) suggests it is just opening night nerves (as her last opening had been rather fraught), the problems get compounded when Annie (and her dog Roxie) find a man face down in the water.

How does all this fit in with Camilla?, why does the new Detective seem to have it in for Annie? - will Martha get married? Read the book and see what gets answered!

Lyndsey Cole has written another scrumptious addition to the Black Cat Cafe Mystery series. This book quickly grabs your attention when Annie finds a body floating in the lake. Annie is determined not to get involved with the investigation but information keeps falling in her lap. The new detective in town doesn't like Annie for some reason and thinks Annie is hiding something. Annie's friend, Martha, is in the final days leading up to her wedding and keeps changing her mind about whether the wedding will happen or not. Annie has a lot on her plate and hopes it all turns out well.

I really enjoy this sereis. There are fun and quirky characters that are likable, I like visiting to see what's going on in their lives. The author does a wonderful job of painting the scene, I feel as though I'm right there with the characters. Ms. Cole has a little behind-the-scenes anecdote leading up to a recipe, I always look forward to them. I look forward to reading the next book in the series!

Cheesecake and a mystery my faves

Love this series, the characters (maybe not detective Crank) , the mystery, the recipes. My only complaint is not wanting to put it down until I have read it all...it's that good.
