I was slightly disappointed the story is a continuing one, was expecting it to end here. But for a children's comics, this is surprisingly dark and I love it. It has this dictator and couple of journalists who sneak into his closed country to found out what’s going on in there. Since this is aimed for kids, the main focus lays in comedy. It also happens to fit to this very well, showing how stupid dictators and all who work close to him, are. I loved that poor-sighted pigeon war correspondent and most of the comedic moments. It’s not as great it could have been but I’m satisfied enough.

Ei tämä kauheasti jaksanut viihdyttää. Vaikka taustalla tuntuukin olevan oikea juoni ja tarina, se jää kaiken päälle liimatun kohelluksen alle piiloon. Ja tämä oli vasta ensimmäinen osa. Voi olla, että toinen jää lukematta.

Tämäkin oli kaksiosaisen seikkailun ensimmäinen osa. Pitänee lukaista sitten uudelleen, kun jatko tulee saataville.

I have an original 1979 hardback in French from Dupuis. This is actually the first episode of the series I read as a serial in the magazine Spirou in 1978 before buying the book. It is also the first part of a double header with an ambitious storyline.

For the first time in ages, the lads are doing some journalism. They break into a closed south east Asian dictatorship to expose what’s going on there. The murderous but cowardly buffoon of a dictator, bankrolled by the Mafia through drug crops as opposed to manipulated by communists, is an intelligent foreshadowing of many corrupt regimes today. Spirou ends up embroiled in the resistance movement whilst Fantasio ends up masquerading as a Mafia kingpin.

Although the focus of the story is on wacky slapstick and happenstance, there is nevertheless quite an advanced and thoughtful backdrop that could have been a dark action thriller in any other series. A brave choice by the author, who is constrained by the format of a kids’ cartoon. This makes for a story that bears many readings.
