What do you think?

Error 404
Thursday 1st September 2039. On the centenary of the Second World War, atheist scientist Chris Deckers exploits the planet's most powerful computer to reveal something so cataclysmic it makes five thousand years of recorded human history–wars, empires, revolutions, the lot–look like an underwhelming warm-up act.
ERROR 404: GOD NOT FOUND.
Yup. According to the most intelligent intelligence on the planet, the big old guy, as advertised, is a big old lie, dreamt up by Bronze Age shepherds who figured the only way to stop everyone coveting their oxen was to invent a punitive sky parent with an eggshell ego. And they left irrefutable evidence of their shaggy God story behind.
Deckers should be rejoicing as his rational Eden is born. Instead, the baby's screaming. Civilisation has lost its existential marbles and the God-shaped hole he crowbarred open is being rapidly filled by something far more sinister.
In a race to save humanity's soul, Deckers must face the one question he never thought to ask. What if faith matters more than facts?

Very funny, also rather scary - but a question I've often asked myself.
The ultimate 'what if?' - what happens to the world if it finds out God's not real?
Jewish scientist Chris Deckers has always had a problem with belief, even running out on his own Bar Mitzvah to make a point as an adolescent, still resenting the circumcision he had no choice in earlier in life:
"He tried not to resent his father for his below-the-belt alteration. After all, his grandfather and great-grandfather had also been ritually torn from their turtlenecks as babies."
Now married to philosopher Lucy, he's been working on a huge project with the world's most powerful computer, Abraham, solving questions including the cure for cancer.
Now he can't help himself... he asks Abraham about the existence of a deity. And Abraham has an assured, evidenced answer. But this isn't something that those in power can deliberate sharing with the public - it's just been broadcast to the world.
The fallout from this announcement is worldwide, immediate and varied. Some celebrate, some mourn. Reactions are extreme.
Professor Deckers wanted mankind to use this message to reach enlightenment, to throw away the crutch of religion and embrace its own humanity and possibility. Is that how the world will react?
With extremists and politicians involved, of course this isn't going to be the case bringing about a 'happily ever after'. What follows is a very funny, irreverent and very dark thought experiment that felt so real to me, I could see it playing out almost this exact same way.
It's really really funny. The references made me laugh. From the name of the latest kids' summer blockbuster, "Toy Story 9: Grandpa Andy Hears Voices" to a famous fast food chain trying to cater for a vegetarian audience ,"the Big Mock, with its wrapper boasting: Meat Taste. Zero moo." My favourite was a silent nod to a Monty Python film about a similar topic and a rant about the Romans. Brilliantly done.
This is subversive, ironic and completely in tune with contemporary multicultural and tech-filled society. References to Hitchins and Dawkins, religious leaders playing a role, it all added up to a thoroughly entertaining story of scientific condescension, optimism and conviction.
Loved this, just my cup of theological tea.
With thanks to Netgalley for providing a sample reading copy.

This book is not what I would normally read, but I enjoyed it! I love the overall message and the pacing. I just wish it was expanded upon. I feel like I got the surface level of the story.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is a tricky one to review: its strongest point is its humour... but the humour also undermines the main themes.
This is a book with a point to make: it asks questions about the way we think and assume, and the dangers of certainty. But it does so in a parodied way, with the plot going to unrealistic extremes, and the characters reverting to Douglas Adams-style jokes instead of emotionally engaging with the consequences of their actions. So, for me, the comedy prevented the themes from making a deep impact. It was an interesting thought-experiment, but not emotionally engaging.
But without the humour, it would have been preachy. So, yeah... tricky.

13 year old Chris Deckers has a problem. He doesn’t believe in God and thinks all religion is just a security blanket for the feeble of mind who cannot think rationally. So he runs out of his Bar Mitzvah to make the point. Thirty odd years later, scientist Professor Chris Deckers can’t resist, and, as he is working with the most powerful AI computer on projects like cures for all cancers, he asks the ‘ultimate’ question. His aim is to install the next Eden on Earth, based on humanism and logic. It all goes horribly, tragically wrong despite A.B.R.A.H.A.M. coming up with, from the prof’s POV, the obviously correct answer - with proof! God was invented by three Bronze Age (?) tribal leaders with names beginning with letters G, O and D. who wrote that they invented GOD in order that their people stop hitting each other over the head with rocks and coveting their neighbour’s cow. Yay. Human enlightenment now achievable…or is it. It goes without saying that the powers that be want to keep Abraham’s answer out of the public domain but Chris takes it upon himself to broadcast it.
The author writes in an amusing way which did at times make me laugh or at least smile: there is even a sly reference to Monte Python’s ‘Romans’ script. But then the situation goes from bad to tragic to horrific and some very upsetting scenes are described. And of course, with politicians and religious leaders involved a ‘happy ever after’ is not realistically on the cards. Not only that but something much more sinister is about to take the place of faith and belief; to take the place of the god-shaped hole in the ‘soul’.
I was gripped as Chris is a compelling character and despite the mayhem he inadvertently creates, he is not of evil intent. Quite the opposite in fact and I was very interested to see how the author would develop the ideas and how he would end the story. The ideas seem very relevant and contemporary. Chris, despite feeling vindicated, is himself forced to think about whether religion, belief and faith are necessary for the human psyche. Are they more important than “facts”, and is there some way to stop the unfolding catastrophe? There is a lovely twist at the end!
This is a great story and I recommend it to readers who maybe themselves have asked such questions…and those who haven’t!
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC for my kindle in return for my honest review.

I’m really not sure about this one. I’d maybe even give it a 1.5.
I found the way it was written quite difficult to read and I definitely didn’t find myself wanting to come back to it.
Interesting concept but maybe just not for me

Probably not his best idea as he comes to realise! You will see everything that is going on around you and fall in love with the amazing and larger than life characters! I know I did! I was genuinely absolutely mind blown when I realised that this is actually Richard's DEBUT novel as it is written as if it is his 1000th!! If you are a fan of The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy by Douglas Adams (who is also mentioned in this book) then you will absolutely LOVE this!! I absolutely devoured this book in one sitting as there was no way I could put it down!! Each and every time I even thought about it to get some actual house work done the characters called me back to demand their attention!! I absolutely loved Abraham and some of the attitude and banter he has really did make me laugh out loud!! One of the things I really enjoyed about this storyline is that it is unique to me as I had never read a storyline like it which always makes a lovely change after reading so many books as it is getting harder and harder to find something new. An absolutely brilliant read that will make your day brighter!!You need to clear your schedules because you will not be able to put this book down. AN ABSOLUTE MUST READ!!
Clear your schedules and enjoy getting lost in this laugh out loud, thought provoking, fun, unique addictive page turner!!
I absolutely loved the larger than life, unique and just fantastic characters that Richard has created for this book!! Thanks to his epic descriptions it truly feels like you are right next to Chris the rest of the amazing characters throughout. I absolutely loved meeting them and was rooting for them throughout. All of the characters are unique with their own personalities, weaknesses, flaws and strengths and I loved meeting and getting to know them all! The only downfall with the characters is that they are entirely fictional even though Richard brings them to life unfortunately, no matter how much I would love to, I am unable to meet up with them in the real world!! I was completely invested in them all throughout and I was gutted when the time came to say Goodbye even though Richard genuinely could not have ended the book any better than he did! Absolutely brilliant!! The fact that Richard genuinely care for his characters shines through the pages in the fantastic way he brought them to life and ensures their readers feels, sees and hears everything that they are. He truly does an absolutely amazing job of bringing the story to life and the characters leap out of the pages as your turning them thanks to his evocative writing skills and I enjoyed getting to meet them all!! It really goes to show how talented he is creating such a wonderful storyline and all these brilliant characters in his debut book. Richard's fantastic evocative writing skills really bring each of them to life. Pick up your copy of this book today and meet these fantastic characters yourself.

Shout out to The Book Guild, Net Galley, and of course Mr. Ferrer for the ARC to give me a head start on this title.
Honestly, I requested this book on a whim because the main storyline grabbed my attention. The story takes us to a not so distant future where AI becomes so powerful that it is able to disprove God. A world where religion irrefutably disproven is not an idea I have explored.
The book is extremely well written, often concise, easy to read. There is an obvious influence from Douglas Adams with a dry, comical air despite some very deep and dark concepts. If there were a flaw in the book, it would be that the storyline almost feels secondary to exploring the impact of God being disproven, and quite frankly, it did not grab my attention. I kept the rating at 4 stars as opposed to 3 stars because this book did take some real estate in my everyday life. When seeing folks in church shirts, when passing churches, when reading about religion in news stories, Error 404 God Not Found, confused me because God had already been disproven? Oh wait, that's just the novel I was reading..
Overall, an easy and fun read. Great book for folks who are not Christian, are fans of Douglas Adams, and are looking to explore the concept of a world without religion. Is it exactly how I think things would go down? Probably not. Did I enjoy the book? Absolutely.
4/5 stars

As someone who is not religious in any way, Richard could not have found a more perfect reader, whose own reviews exactly mirror his own when it comes to religion.
Starting with a young boy, Chris, running away from his Bar Mitzvah because hes realised all the bible is nonsense. He later marries Lucy, and creates an AI system Abraham, and in 2039 asks the most important question of all, 'Does God exist?'
When the computer says no, the response to the news is live streamed across the world and the fallout.
Its an interesting look at how we use religion and faith, and how and why its important and the potential world we would live in without it.
Aside from the content I absolutely loved this book because its FUNNY. Laugh out loud, snort laugh funny.
When you have a line like 'if chickens ever got their shit together and unionised with turkeys, they'd inherit the earth quicker than you say coq oh vin. Not they ever would. Too chicken.'
You have an idea.
The fact this is Richards debut is incredible. Its a true page turner, I couldnt put it down, and I was hooked from page 1 which is unusual for me. Cannot wait to see what he does next.

Thank you to NetGalley for this arc in return for an honest review.
This isn’t the sort of book I’d normally pick up, but the premise was interesting enough that I wanted to see where it went: what happens to the world if we’re suddenly given definitive proof that God doesn’t exist?
Unsurprisingly… absolute chaos.
The humour is easily the strongest part of this book. It’s irreverent, ridiculous and sometimes VERY funny, but I actually think the comedy is necessary. There are some pretty big ideas underneath it all — religion, certainty, science, humanity and what happens when something fundamental to millions of people is suddenly taken away. Without the humour, I think it could very easily have felt heavy and at times, a little uncomfortable.
Instead, it reads more like a slightly bonkers thought experiment about how differently people might react.
And I can absolutely see this making a religious reader VERY uncomfortable. It doesn’t exactly tread delicately around belief!
Not my usual read, but clever, funny and certainly an interesting concept.

This book had me completely hooked and I could not stop thinking about it every time I put it down. The whole concept was so deep and it had me thinking of what would happen if the events that unfolded in this book were real.
I found this to be so well written and easy to follow, I loved the multiple POVs which really deepened how the world coped with the knowledge that God isn't real.
There was so much meaning throughout this book which really highlighted the comfort religion provides for so many people and it genuinely had me thinking about religion in a different light.
If you love a book that keeps you thinking for days after you've finished then I would highly recommend Error 404 it was such a gripping novel with so many different ideas and concepts that really have you thinking.

As a practising Catholic, who attends Sunday Mass and has a strong faith, I was quite unsure about this one.
But I went into the read with an open mind and I think that authors should have the perspective of readers who are not necessarily their target audience, so I try to read outside of my comfort zone as often as possible and this certainly was an intriguing one for me.
At it's heart, this is a novel about faith, blind faith at that and about human nature, all wrapped up in a witty, quite hilarious, thought-provoking tale that tackles the rather big questions surrounding God's existence.
It's fast paced and fun and intelligently written with lots of laugh out loud moments.
4 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 's from me.

I received an advance copy of this book from Netgalley.
I loved the way this book is written with wit and has a great cast of characters (although many are clearly over-the-top caricatures) and some interesting philosophical points.
There's a few reasons I've taken off a star. One (that hopefully isn't a spoiler) is that the tagline is misleading - I expected quite a different plot based on that. Besides that, I'm not sure I believe things would play out the way they do. A more grounded and realistic take could have been interesting. I guess it's up for debate though how things would play out if various scenarios in this book happened!
Overall, definitely recommend. It'd be a really good addition to a reading list for young beginner philosophy students.

Set in 2039, the story follows Chris Deckers, an atheist scientist who uses the world's most powerful supercomputer to uncover irrefutable proof that God doesn't exist. However, instead of ushering in the rational utopia Deckers expects, the definitive "ERROR 404: GOD NOT FOUND" plunges civilization into existential chaos. Society loses its collective mind, and the God-shaped void is rapidly filled by something far more sinister, forcing Deckers to confront whether humanity's need for faith actually matters more than cold, hard facts.
As an amateur theologian, I found the core theological commentary to be fantastic. The book provides a very tongue-in-cheek, yet fairly accurate representation of the textual and historical realities that many 'old timers' or extremely well-read religious leaders already know. Watching these concepts dismantled in a speculative setting is genuinely hilarious for the first half of the book, and the author's sharp wit shines.
However, the execution stumbles a bit when it comes to tone. The comedy woven into the narrative and exposition eventually becomes a little too much, ultimately undercutting the seriousness of the book's own message. The story reaches several critical points where it desperately needs more pathos to ground the cataclysmic stakes of a collapsing society, but it tries too hard to stay funny instead of letting the emotional weight land.
Additionally, for a novel dealing with the global fallout of disproving the divine, its scope feels surprisingly narrow. The narrative focuses almost exclusively on Judeo-Christian ideology, largely discounting the theological frameworks and potential reactions of the world's many other religions.
Despite the tonal missteps and a narrow religious lens, it remains a witty, fast-paced, and thought-provoking exploration of humanity's existential safety nets.

I loved the premise of this book and was excited to read it. I enjoyed the beginning but grew tired of the constant doubling back with a smart arse quip. It kept taking me out of the story.
The male heavy cast of characters and references was tiresome. He meets all the greats in heaven and there is only one woman, all the religious leaders and the token female is a Nun. There is one main female character and that’s his wife who dies half way through!!!
Give the story a whirl though you may like it more than I did.

This book! Laughing from start to finish, it really takes the mick out of everything!
It is futuristic, but only set in 2039.. AI is truly taking over - it is somewhat believable that this could happen which makes it even funnier
There’s heart break, deceit and everything you need in a novel!
I loved the cover, and would recommend this if you like AI, or even if you are worried about AI…
Really well written - super funny

This story is very interesting because it takes the conflicts between science and religion and turns it into a high risk sci-fi adventure. The idea of an atheist scientist proving that God does not exist, only to discover that the outcomes are much worse than expected, it definitely caught my attention. I also like the question at the heart of the story: what happens when facts and faith collide? It's provocative and a enjoyable read.

The main character Chris is amazing! His voice is clear, concise and funny! Well written and very clever. Inspires some interesting questions, and the ending was not at all what I was thinking. If you are looking for a thought provoking book, give this one a
