Holly Wilson has landed a dream job but there is one proviso... she must keep it secret, and that means telling lies. Holly hates telling lies.
Her latest assignment has brought her to the paradise island of Mauritius where she meets a British couple, Robert and Rosemary, who share a tragic secret of their own.
The moment they introduce Holly to handsome writer, Philippe, she begins to fall in love, something she hasn't allowed herself to do for twenty years.
But Philippe has not been completely honest and when Holly stumbles across the truth, she feels totally betrayed.
"A slice of sheer escapism which packs an emotional punch" Jemma Forte
This is the first book in the Liberty Sands trilogy. Read on at the end of this book to find out what happens to Holly next in the preview of If He Really Loved Me..., book two in the series.
The author is the lovely Julia Roberts of QVC TV fame and it’s the first book in her Liberty Sands Trilogy. I am delighted to say I found this an extremely enjoyable and entertaining read. There’s sun sea romance and everything else you would expect from seeing the title and cover. A great summer book that also gives us a touch of humour and there may even be a few tears…
Holly has a tough job but someone’s got to do it! All expenses paid she flies out to holiday resorts and secretly reports back on the levels of service and accommodation. The story begins with her arrival on the beautiful island of Mauritius where she soon makes friends with Robert, his wife Rosemary and the handsome writer Philippe. She reluctantly tells a few lies as a cover story as to why she’s there. But she’s not the only one hiding a few things. Robert and Rosemary have a secret they don’t wish to share, while Philippe has a bit of a ‘love them and leave them’ track record with the ladies.
Holly is a single mother and her son Harry is now at university. Harry is a likeable chap whilst his mother has shied away from relationships after being left by Harry’s father before he was born. Holly had Harry at an early age and she is still a desirable and attractive young woman. It doesn’t take Philippe long to notice her and they soon become lovers. But life’s a beach and then…
Back in England the action quickens as Holly finds things don’t really go as she had planned. There are a few surprises and by now we kind of like Holly and wish her well. How will it all turn out for her and can that holiday romance continue back home? You will just have to read it for yourself to find out what happens. All in all it was sometimes emotional but always a delightfully easy read which I have no problem recommending. I look forward to the second book in the series which will be titled: If He Really Loved Me…
The title of this book intrigued me so I requested the audiobook to check out the start of this series. I have mixed emotions about the plot but the writing is well done and the audiobook narrator is excellent. This will make it very hard to find an appropriate star rating that encompasses the totality of how I felt listening to this book. Let me start by saying that the narrator is the star of this book switching between accents beautifully and has an appropriate level of inflection to keep from feeling "lulled" into not paying attention. In other words, kept me engaged. The book is written in a third person voice and I never thought that I would have an opinion about that type of storytelling. I've never seemed to notice whether it was first person or not. However, in this book, I felt that it made me feel disjointed in some scenes. It's hard to describe but there was a scene where two of the characters are getting romantic and I could tell that the narrator's voice was from the male perspective and then it switched to what was going on with the female's thoughts... it was very noticeable in this book.
Here's where the mixed feelings come in to play for me. So many lies and secrets that were being held (the reasons for most of them seemed so flimsy). Richard and Rosemary vacation on an island where they have met Philippe. Rosemary is sick with cancer and has grown close to Philippe as a friend on the island and they spend dinners together over a year long period. Holly visits the island, meets this couple who they introduce to Philippe and there is chemistry between them. Rosemary discloses her "secret" terminal illness to someone she has JUST met and Holly discloses her secret as a mystery "secret shopper" blog writer. Neither secret is disclosed to Philippe at any time. Holly uses the excuse of not giving her phone number as she doesn't have the money to return the calls to international numbers because she doesn't want him to find out about her secret career. Let's get real... this is not high school? Her career is not the CIA.... I eye rolled so hard with all these secrets that just added up to a LOT of confusion and misunderstanding. There is a HUGE huge secret that i won't reveal but it made me so mad that Holly decides she can't disclose this information to Philippe.... WHY? She's a ghost writer and faults Philippe for using parts of their relationship as inspiration.... WHAT? Why was this such an issue.
Okay... Narration was 4.5 stars The actual storytelling 3.5 stars The Plot 2.5 stars There were times when I wish an editor had condensed a good bit of this book as well.
Since there are no half stars allowed, 3 stars will have to do to convey that I felt the book was decent and I will probably pick up the rest of the series because of the cliffhanger but it was pretty frustrating at times.
Life’s a Beach and Then… AUDIO by Julia Roberts is first and foremost a romance. But this seemingly simple romance touches on other subjects: unwed motherhood, assisted suicide, leukemia, and lying. Lies often seem innocuous when told, but turn into so much more as time passes. Such as in this book, where Holly leads a double life: one as a free-lance editor for a prestigious publishing house; and also as a travel blogger, telling the truth, which is often unlikely online. As a travel blogger it is necessary to remain anonymous ans so...lies. Holly met Robert and Rosemary on a trip to tropical paradise, Mauritius, and they become close friends in record time. She is also introduced to their good friend, Philippe, with whom she falls in love. It had been twenty years since she had been attracted to a man, let alone fallen in love. That hadn’t worked out well, except for her son, who was now at university. Then, Philippe did something she thought unforgivable and she was facing single motherhood a second time.
Rosemary was dying. This was a closely held secret but she confided in Holly. Things took a wicked turn there, as well. This was a low-key romance which moved slowly but in retrospect covered plenty of territory. It was a charming listen, full of tears and repercussions. Holly was an excellent character, estranged from her mother, still mourning her dead father. She liked her life and was surprised when Philippe intruded upon it. She had high hopes, which crumbled before her very eyes. There was plenty of pain to go around. The characters were unique and excellently written, pouring out all of their personalities onto the page. The plot was a simple trope, but treated differently and kindly. It was a slow-moving book, but as it turns out the pacing was perfect.
The book was narrated by Melanie Crawley and she was perfect. She dealt with the different characters easily and carefully; at no point did one wonder who was talking. She was the perfect narrator for this lovely book and her rendition added to the story.

Title: Life’s A Beach and Then . . . Series: Liberty Sands Trilogy Book #1 Author: Julia Roberts Format: 🎧 Audiobook Narrator: Melanie Crawley Genre: Romance, Women’s Fiction Publisher: Dreamscape Select/Reconteurs Audio and Ripped Ltd. Audiobook Release Pub Date: October 31, 2024 My Rating: 4+ Stars Pages: 300
Holly Wilson a single mother of nineteen year old Harry who is off to college, is offered a job as a travel blogger to report on the level of service and accommodations at holiday resorts. However, she must to do secretly and not reveal any truth as to why she is there. Her first assignment is the resort on the beautiful paradise island of Mauritius. Almost immediately after arrival she makes friends with Robert and his wife Rosemary as well as the handsome Philippe, a journalist and now a writer.
Holly has to tell a few lies as to why she is there by herself. But it seems she’s not the only one hiding a few things. Robert and Rosemary have a secret they don’t wish to share. Holly friendship with Rosemary develops into something very special and Rosemary reveals to Holly that she is dying but doesn’t want to burden anyone with this sad news. Robert of course knows and respects Rosemary’s wishes not to reveal her secret.
Philippe finds Holly attractive and their holiday friendship turns into what seems more than a Holiday Romance. Is it?
I knew this was a trilogy so wasn’t sure how much was going to develop in Book One – was sure there would be a big ‘cliff hanger/teaser regarding Book #2.
However, I was surprised as well as totally delighted how much I was enjoying this. Rosemary and Robert are fabulous characters – I just love them both! Their story gives an understanding to the title. Wasn’t sure how much was going to develop with I was sure the Holly and Phillippe connection would continue but Rosemary and Robert’s love story was so very special, I was Okay with waiting for the other books to keep up with Holly and Phillippe.
Want to thank NetGalley and Dreamscape Select/Reconteurs Audio and Ripped Ltd. for this great audiobook. Audiobook Release Date scheduled for October 31, 2024.
This audiobook was very interesting and the narrator was great. At the beginning of this book I wasn't sure if I could stick with. I am so glad I did because it was a very good book. It takes place on the island of Mauritius and the descriptions of it sound absolutely beautiful and majestic. While this book was about Holly and her interesting career as a secret travel writer and an editor, it's also a book about her befriending a couple (the wife is sick) and a single man. She grows close to the wife of the couple and share some of her secrets with them. As she gets close to them she feels she can let her guard down. Once she leaves Mauritius she keeps up her friendship with the couple and tried to help where she can. This book encompasses lots of feelings of guilt for being secretive (as it's part of her job), sadness and loss. While also sharing the joys she has found with these friends. Toward the end of the book we jump a few years ahead, then back and then it ends. I was planning on giving this 4 stars but I absolutely hate when a book that is going to have a sequel just stops without a wrap up, now I have to read the next book in the series. Thus the 3 star rating.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the arc audiobook.
Wonderfully narrated sweet and sad story. Holly is a single mom who loves her wonderful son with her whole heart and most aspects of her work. She is an editor and a “secret shopper/reviewer” for a global resort chain, thus she travels all over and blogging about the places she visits. On her most recent trip she meets Robert and Rosemary, possibly the sweetest most wonderful couple who found each other a little later in life. Theirs is the love we all hope for, but it is also tinged with sadness. She also meets Phillipe and for the first time since the father of her son (who ceased contact when he went to America and never looked back) allows herself to let love in. She may not have been totally honest due to her job, but when she through a twist of fate discovers who Philippe really is she feels betrayed to the very core. A wonderful story that was narrated beautifully. Be advised, there are cliffhangers so if that's not your thing, this may not be for you. I, on the other hand, have already pre-ordered the next in this series. I need to know what happens next.
I received a copy of this book from Netgalley.com in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Holly is a single mom who poses as a widow so she doesn't have to explain why she is a single mom (don't understand why) but her "job" is as a travel blogger and she has to go undercover to rate resorts and all their amenities. While she is in Mauritius she meets a wonderful older couple and develops a relationship with the wife who is dying. She also meets Philippe who is also on the island but he is also there for his own reasons. He has been having a bit of writers block and needing to work on his next novel. He writes under the name Veronica Philips. Soon, Holly and Philippe have grown closer and by the time Holly has to return home they have made plans for him to join her back in London. So much happens and I am not going to tell you about it but this one definitely deserves a read. Since this is the first one in a trilogy, I cannot wait to find out where book 2 takes me.
**Received this ARC for review in audio from the publisher via NetGalley**
The cover of this audiobook drew me in and the descriptive style of the author made Mauritius sound so amazing! It is now on my bucket list! This is the first book in the Liberty Sands trilogy and I look forward to continuing the story of the characters. The narrator, Melanie Crawly, has a voice that is perfect for this book and easy to listen to. She changed her voice for different characters which made the book easier to follow.
Thank you Net Galley, Julia Roberts and Dreamscape Audio for the opportunity to preview this title. The opinions expressed are my own.
The story is set on the island of Mauritius. That was its attraction for me and the author’s description of the setting is very actuate. At first I was enjoying the story. I don’t like books which end without a conclusion, especially romantic stories. I feel cheated and not inclined to buy the next book in the series. Hence only a two star review from me.
Life's a Beach and Then… is book one in the The Liberty Sands Trilogy by Julia Roberts.
I absolutely loved the audiobook and wished it wouldn’t end! I can’t wait for the next one in the trilogy.
A special thank you to NetGalley, Julia Roberts, and Dreamscape Select for the advance access to the audio version. Melanie Crawley’s narration was fantastic!

This is the first book in the Liberty Sands book series. Holly has landed on Mauritius as a travel blogger and made quick friends with Robert and Rosemary. She had to lie about who she is, but still had made friends with them and also with Phillippe. She falls in love with Phillipe, who is also carrying untruths. I would love to read the rest of this series!
Many thanks to Net Galley and Dreamscape Select for an audio ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Book one was a little slow but I wanted to see the end. Read all 3 books. Last one was the best. A little boring at times but was invested enough to conclude the trilogy.
I enjoyed this book. I thought it was sweet. I enjoyed the bind that was made. I thought the ending came way too quick. I wanted more time to savor it.
I really liked this book - I loved the setting of it. Holly has a job as a secret resort blogger, basically to make sure the resorts are meeting the standards they should be and also including anything fun to do while vacationing. While there Holly meets a super sweet couple and a handsome gentlemen and thats where the fun begins! There is also ties into her messed up relationship with her mother that harbor a lot of weird feelings that get explored.
Single mum Holly Wilson is also Liberty Sands the travel blogger and protecting her identity is all part of the job, but when she meets Robert and Rosemary and their attractive friend Philippe, maintaining her secret and her equilibrium is not easy.
I have to be honest and say I was not expecting to enjoy Life’s A Beach And Then… as much as I did. I have no idea why, but I wrongly assumed it would be lightweight, formulaic chick-lit that would be an enjoyable read but little else. I was wrong. Life’s A Beach And Then… is so much more.
Firstly, it is well written with a fast pace that grips the reader and there are believable characters that I wanted to know more about, the more I read. Many are facing their own demons, either coming to terms with past lives or struggling with the one they have at present. I can’t say too much more without spoiling the plot but there are so many important themes and issues, including parenthood, relationships, illness and trust, explored by Julia Roberts, alongside the romantic elements of the story, that this is a book to make the reader think and count their blessings as well as enjoy as an entertaining read. The author’s personal experiences have contributed to making this an authentic and often moving read.
The plot itself is exciting and entertaining. I loved the twists and turns and the dramatic events that took place. The ending sets up the next book in the trilogy, If He Really Loved Me…, extremely well and I am very keen to read on to find out more about Holly, though I think some readers might find the ending of Life’s A Beach And Then… a little frustrating. It certainly took me by surprise.
I thought Julia Roberts conveyed the luxury and attraction of the Mauritian setting so effectively. I really wanted to be there alongside the characters. The writing also has just the right touch of detail to bring alive the story and to present a visual image in the reader’s mind’s eye. I really liked the concept of Ripped publishing playing a part in the novel as well as actually publishing the book.
Life’s A Beach And Then… is a smashing read that transports the reader away from their own life into the lives of Holly and her friends. It would be perfect for a holiday read – especially if you’re off to Mauritius. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The first half of this book is set in Mauritius. You can tell that Julia Roberts really enjoyed her holiday there, as the descriptions of the island are spot on, right down to the selection of goods on offer by the beach hawkers.
Holly has a job which is allowing her to travel to places beyond her dreams, but with the the proviso that she needs to keep what she is doing secret. Holly though has a cover story in place, but it involves lieing, and she hates lies.
Soon into the trip she meets Robert and Rosemary, who become friends. Rosemary is hiding a secret of her own though, and they introduce Holly to Philippe, handsome Frenchman, and writer, who is in Mauritius to try and get some inspiration for his new novel, and to get over his writer's block.
However Philippe may not be all that he seems either. Just what is he hiding?
The story was interesting enough, and the writing flowed well, but I just wasn't gripped by the book. There are scenes that should be filled with emotion, and unfortunately I just didn't feel anything. The only true feeling I felt while reading this story, was when it ended, and I realised that I would need to read the second book in the series (and probably the third), to have a proper sense of closure.
I firmly believe that books should make you feel an emotion. It doesn't matter what emotion, but something more than just page turning and absorbing the words. Unfortunately I didn't get any emotion for anyone in Life's A Beach.
The book, moves between the various perspectives of Rosemary, Holly and Philippe and it does help to get to know more facets of their characters. However my favourite character had to be Harry, Holly's son, who is insightful beyond his years. I hope Harry features more prominently in the rest of the trilogy.
I was finding that almost all the secrets in the book, were slightly predictable, and thus there were to me at least, no big reveals at all, no shocking moments at all.
The second half of the book once the Holly has returned to the UK picks up the pace, and is far more interesting, and is why I would definitely consider reading the next book in the trilogy. There is a lot of potential in both this series and this author, it just didn't quite resonate fully with me.
I really enjoyed this book. Although a little slow to begin with, it soon picks up pace and you’re immersed in the story of Holly, Philippe, Robert and Rosemary. It’s warm, funny and full of heart. If you like Lucy Dillon, you’ll love Julia Roberts!
The story begins with Holly arriving on the beautiful island of Mauritius. As I mentioned, I found this part of the story a bit slow and although there is lots of rich description, I felt this kind of slowed down the pace. I like the beginning of a story to take me right to the heart of the action, introduce me to all the key players and throw me right in at the deep end. That being said, I loved the descriptions of the luxurious hotel she was staying in and of her surroundings. It made me really want to visit Mauritius.
Robert and Rosemary are two of the other main characters in the story. They are Holly’s employers and, for reasons that become clear later in the story, she has to keep her job a secret. This initially doesn’t sit well with Holly- if it’s one thing she hates, it’s secrets- but what she doesn’t know is, Robert and Rosemary are burdened with a tragic secret. I won’t spoil what it is for you, but I was pretty shocked when I read what it was. I had some ideas of what it might be, but Julia made my jaw drop! It added a nice dimension to the story and provided a good contrast to the love story between Holly and Philippe.
Ah, Philippe… Where do I start? A hunky writer with a shady past and a soft side? YES PLEASE. He was by far my favourite character. I liked him instantly and although he isn’t a saint throughout the book (that’s putting it mildly!), he is endearing and lovely to read about. I’m maybe a wee bit in love with him too… He provides the perfect antidote for Holly and challenges her views on love. It was nice to see her open her heart to him throughout the story.
Overall, Life’s A Beach and Then… was enjoyable, with light-hearted moments balanced with some darker elements. The characters were intriguing and invited me in to read on. I really enjoyed the plot; it was interesting, thought-provoking and full of emotion. This book would make a great poolside read!
Huge thanks to Jenny (www.jennyinneverland.wordpress.com) for inviting us to be part of the Blog Tour for the first book in what is set to be a trilogy by TV presenter and author Julia Roberts.
The first books sees us meeting Holly as she begins her ‘holiday’ in Mauritius, where she spends a time people watching, soon we learn that Holly is not really on holiday at all but actually writing a blog under her other persona Liberty Sands. Whilst she hates lying in order to maintain the secret of who she is for her job she has a series of lies to explain her solo trip.
On this trip however Holly finds it difficult to maintain the lie following forming a close bond with couple Robert & Rosemary, they found love late in life and appear to be very happy together, but they too have their secret one which Rosemary does eventually share with Holly.
Also on the trip Holly meets Robert and Rosemary’s good friend Phillipe a dashing Frenchman who may be able to help her mend her broken heart.
This book was captivating from the first page and the narrative flowed really well as secrets were revealed and relationships developed. There were a few moments as the friendships developed (and particularly towards the end of the book) which really tugged the heart strings and left you a little weepy.
I was routing for the relationship between Holly & Phillipe but I think that may have a few more obstacles yet (will be good to see how it progresses in the trilogy!)
I thought the book was going to become about the love story but was glad that it stayed on track to be more about the developing friendship between Holly & Rosemary, whilst not the ending I was hoping for, it was the right one for this book. It’s got a little surprise near the end as well which I’m sure will be explored more in book 2! An excellent read, the only downside was that I was reading on my journey to work and not on a beach!
The story begins in Maritiaus, following the main character Holly as she reviews the hotel for her blog. The description of the location is brilliant - there is great attention to detail and you can tell Julia has personal experience of being there, you really do feel immersed into that environment. During Holly's trip we also meet Rosemary and Robert, a lovely couple who are enjoying one of the last holidays they can have because of Rose's illness. They are a really sweet couple, particularly the way Robert cares so dearly for his wife, and I loved following them on their journey. My favourite character was Holly's son, Harry. He is a student and is wonderful - very level-headed and easy-going, I loved finding out more about him during the second part of the story, and hope the second book of this series will follow him more. I want to be as completely honest as possible when it comes to reviews and so I will say that if I'm honest, the storyline didn't grip me or pull me in as much as I thought it would. The pace of the story is hindered by a lot of description which is sometimes too much. Instead of getting to know a characters thoughts and emotions, you instead get a lot of detailed description about other things that aren't always needed. For me, the storyline was fairly predictable with no twist or turns and I didn't get to relate to the characters as much as I'd have liked to. However, don't let that put you off as there are some really great aspects to the book and it is definitely worth a read. I particularly enjoyed the latter half of the story as it is quicker-paced and more entertaining, but I also enjoyed the Mauritius location - it made me crave a luxurious holiday in a 5* resort! It will be interesting to see how this works as a series and how the story will develop with book 2.
I would like to thank Jenny Marsden and author Julia Roberts for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
When we first meet Holly she is on her way to a dream vacation in Mauritius but Holly hides a secret. The beginning of the story is quite slow and I wasn't sure if I would enjoy it but I stuck with it and this turned into a really good read. I liked Holly from the first page, also Robert and Rosemary who both hide a secret of their own.
I couldn't however take to Philippe and I'm hoping in the next book in the series that he will grow on me. There was just something about him I couldn't take and regulars to my blog know I love my book boyfriends.
None of Holly's life has been a smooth ride and this story is no different. There are so many ups and downs that it really did feel like a rollercoaster ride set in the Mauritius and back in England. I loved how Holly developed a deep friendship with Rosemary and Robert. Also her relationship with her son was really lovely to read.
The pace of this book really stepped up towards the end and I'm hoping the next in the series continues at the same pace. I loved how Julia threw a couple of curve balls in that I really wasn't expecting. A good beginning to a series from Julia Roberts.
This is a fantastic story and is fabulously written - I just couldn't put it down and had finished it within just 2 days! Julia's style of writing allows you really get to know the characters and connect with them on an emotional level which I find essential to enjoy a book. I don't want to give anything away but there was a one moment in particular that caused a lump in my throat and, had I not been on a train surrounded by strangers, there would have been tears.
I choose to read on the train when I am commuting to and from work so I need a book to be easy to pick up and put down yet still exciting enough for me to want to read at the end of a long day - this book is perfect! Julia leaves you wanting to read on at the end of EVERY chapter which is most likely why my reading was extended beyond my train journeys and onto the sofa with a cup of tea in the evening.
Despite not having a huge amount in common with lead character Holly I felt that I was easily able to relate to her and to feel what she was feeling.
This is a brilliant debut novel from Julia and I can't wait for the next book in the Liberty Sands Trilogy to be released!
