*******************

--------------------------

Although this adventure novel about the Shackleton expedition on the Endurance is aimed at young readers, it is also a great read for adults.

The author describes the expedition from the point of view of the youngest member of the team, 16-year-old Peter Blackborrow, who sneaks onto the Endurance as a stowaway and is hired as a ship's boy after his discovery.

I found the story breathtakingly exciting, although of course it is a familiar one, as the author has stuck to the historical facts. But Zimmermann writes so convincingly that I could really feel the wet, the cold, the hunger and the ice.

I recommend this book for readers of all ages who want to know more about Antarctica and at the same time read a really exciting adventure novel.

It's a great youth book, told from the perspective of Peter "Blacky" Blackborrow who boarded the "Endurance" as a stowaway. The character is based on a real person which makes it more interesting. The "Endurance" got stuck in the Antarctic ice and even crushed by it which forced the crew to camp on the ice for several months, moving several times due to tears and melting ice. They had to shoot their dogs and eat them to get by but they survived. When they could finally sail with three small boats through the sea again, they came to elephant island after a tormenting ride. Here, the leaders, incl. Ernest Shackleton, left the crew behind to row to South Georgia to come back with a bigger boat for rescue. Peter had lost 4 toes which were taken off in an operation on Elephant island. After 4 months on the island, finally the boss came back for rescue which was delayed because of the ice.
All men survived this trip.
