Grim Reality #2

Styx & Stoned

Rate this book
Las Vegas! All expenses paid!

Normally, a trip like that would be a dream come true for a widowed, mother of three, who just happens to be grim reaper. Here’s the thing though, situations rarely work out as I imagine they should. And usually not in my favor.

This time isn’t any different. Instead of the endless free drinks and gambling I’d been hoping for, I get the opposite—demons, water zombies, and a bimbo ghost roommate, who gives new meaning to the phrase dead drunk.

But it’s not all bad. I’m making new friends, learning spectacular reaper skills, and saving souls. I just hope I don’t lose mine before I can get the Underworld all sorted out.

A week in Vegas sounded heavenly for Lisa, widowed mother of three and Grim Reaper. Lisa was traveling to Vegas for a GRS conference which sounded rather dull but might be fun. When Lisa arrives in Vegas she is so surprised to find more souls than she usually sees in an area. Maybe Vegas just has more dead? Who knows, food, alcohol, sleep and gambling awaits and not necessarily in that order! Here she meets Mara and Cam who are partners like her and Nate are. Mara and Lisa become instant friends and find themselves in all kinds of trouble.

Brux has a hilarious writing style that keeps you laughing and smiling through the whole book. Her characters are relatable even if they are grim reapers, angels, demons and souls. Another fabulous book in this series and I will be impatiently awaiting the next adventure.

Yeesh... I loved this too much. *happy sigh* There was so much to take in and so many juicy litte pieces given. I honestly can not wait to explore Nate and Lisa's relationship. Also can't wait to see what "side effects" happen now that we know Death himself is who he is to her. *spoilers* lol

My only complaint would be the typos and the little nuisances that could have easily been fixed before publication. Boone my reaper sister I love you. You need a new editor and new beta readers ASAP. I can help with the beta reading.

Ghosts, demons, supernatural beings in Vegas, oh my! What is a Reaper to do? Add in a temper tantrum of epic proportions Nd you have the mix of a really exciting story. I can't wait for the next one!

Styx and Stoned is a fast paced and fun read. Boone Brux has created a world and characters that are plenty entertaining. Honestly, she’s one of the funniest authors I’ve ever read.

This is the 2nd book in the series, and I have been waiting for what felt like forever to read it. I won a copy at Coastal Magic Con. It was worth every minute of waiting.

Lisa goes to Las Vegas on Reaper business. I swear this woman has worse luck than I do, and that’s saying something. While we don’t get to witness and of her stupid people reaping, there is plenty of other action and adventure. One thing I love about this character is that I can relate to her on a level that just doesn’t happen in other books. She’s a mom, she has shitty luck, and just can’t get a break. I understand that completely.

In Styx and Stoned we learn a lot about the other characters in the series. I understand Hal a lot better than I did previously, and now I can understand why he’s such a wanker.

Overall this was a funny, enjoyable read. I laughed through most of the book, and I really like when that happens. The action never really stops and you never know what will happen next!

Lisa Carron may be a reluctant grim reaper, but don't underestimate her - this widowed mother of three has a spine of steel and a sense of humor that will keep you cringing and laughing along with her. Lisa's conference/vacation in Las Vegas gets interrupted when the newly reaped start returning to the mortal plane, and the supernatural beings who enlist Lisa's help aren't exactly people you say no to without running the risk of being struck down in some horrific manner. But as with most supernatural beings, Lisa knows she isn't getting the whole story, and why is a junior reaper the only one that can help?

Thoroughly enjoyable read. I love Lisa's dry wit and sense of humor, regardless of the situation. Some typos, but don't let that stop you from grabbing this book. Mature topics (death, promiscuity, angels, demons) and some intense fight scenes, but no explicit sexual content or graphic descriptions of violence.

This is a 3.5 star read.

This was such a fun read filled with demons and angels and reapers, oh my! Written in a "cosy" style and so well paced that the pages practically turned themselves. Good (?) demons - check, original Deities of Death - check and a backup of souls from the River Styx being pushed through to the mortal realm - most definitely! The story takes place in Las Vegas and incorporates the Conventions within which leads to more than a few smirks. A paranormal look at what happens when the Ferryman has a hissy fit and the adage that you can't choose your family. Enjoyable light read.

I absolutely loved this book! I loved Lisa and Mara together, they were both so much fun. This series is quickly becoming one of my all time favorites :) The story was very well written and had a steady pace. We got to learn more about Lisa and other supernaturals, also we learned more about Hal <3 I'm really looking forward to reading the next book.
The editing in this one was so much better. There were a few mistakes but nothing you can't look over.

I loved the characters, and I loved the story line. A great addition to the Brux' Grim Reaper series. Full of puns, tasteful and otherwise, smart humor, and an outlandish plot that kept me wondering how this would pan out. We were introduced to Mara, who is the ultimate BFF for Lisa, and I laughed my way thru all their antics.

Other than a really annoying (to me anyway) continuity issues -
*****SPOILER ALERT!*****

- specifically, when did Lisa find out she was possibly a kid of Charon's? She just suddenly she 'knows' she is?? I even went back and re-read parts to see if I missed something. Nope. I got nothin' -
- it's still another fun read. Will knock a whole star off for that one issue, though!

I so loved the first book, and I would have totally loved this one if someone had edited it. The number of minor grammatical errors were enough to continuously throw me out of the story. Fortunately, I could get back into it, and still enjoy it. But she only gets 4 stars instead of 5.

Our heroine is offered an all-expenses-paid trip to Vegas. Well, of course, there's a catch. And oh, what a marvelous catch it is. We meet new characters I hope continue into the next books. Her porter (he transports the souls to their ultimate destination) is the original grumpy old man. And the demons and angels she meets are wonderful. Oh, and the part-time job she's offered sounds pretty good – Ferryman on the River Styx. Time is different over there. What seems like hours on the River is actually only seconds in our mundane world. She could be home with her kids more, get her housework done, and still make a chest full of money. Daily. What's not to like?

I will order Book 3 soon but must finish packing first, otherwise, I'll sit and read, and not be ready when the movers arrive in September. Yep, these books go on my shelf next to the Moonlight Dragon books and the Reaper's Inc books. Fun reads, all.

Terrific take no prisoners reaper tale

Stupendous! Loved it! The tale gets even more involved and she has to come out guns blazing (well sort of). He character is growing by leaps and bounds with new powers, new family and new friends.
Going to the conference should have been exciting but it felt more like work the closer she got to the hotel. However Vegas for seven days could be a lot of fun and it was a long way from. But finding out that the Board was made up of angels and demons and that there was a serious problem was not the way she wanted to spend the next 7 days. Charon has gone a wolf but not having resigned was still getting paid whilst the bank of the River Styx had a severe overcrowding problem. Worse once it got too bad the ghosts would start manifesting on the earth plane. The Board had a solution - she would ferry the boat and clear the backlog with the help of a demon and Hall (her Porter). Add in demons, possession, Nyx, Charon on the warpath and the development of new powers. Will she be stuck as the ferry person? Will she and Mara survive the perils of the River Styx? Why has Nyx taken an interest in her?

It's not unusual for an author, several books into a series, to take a side trip like a Christmas story or a vacation.
It is, however, slightly odd for it to happen just two books in.
"Styx and Stoned" sees widowed mother of three Lisa Carron, 35, Alaska, heading off to Vegas for a week-long convention for grim reapers.
This time round there is not a lot of reaping going on as a completely different storyline emerges - Charon has pulled a hissyfit and is no longer ferrying souls across the Styx. The dead are piling up and soon they start re-appearing as ghosts back on earth.
Lisa and Mara are delegated to sort the mess out.
It's very readable but lazy, and it lacks some of the charm of the first in the series 'To Catch Her Death.'
While it does reveal a few new nuggets of information it fails to follow through on some of the questions previously raised, e.g. how did her husband die and where is his money?
2.5 Stars raised to 3 Stars.

A Reaper work conference held in Las Vegas which is a mandatory series of meetings, has Lisa meeting some new people. She expects to learn a few things, but instead becomes involved in more than she expected when Charon decides he is tired of ferrying the dead on the river Styx.

With the help of a demon, Mara, who may become one of Lisa's best friends, she tries to help out before ferry waiting area overflows back to the world. Add in the council members, who represent the "good" and "evil" in the world is an interesting twist and shows a higher view in the world order.

Lots of fun, some unexpected appearances and information overload for her on this new adventure.

this is an interesting series. a well thought out series that makes you laugh, giggle and roll your eyes. Lisa and Mara as a team is funny and you can't help but cheer for them. You have to love when Lisa, treats grown men like children and calls their bluff. Lisa goes to Las Vegas for a convention for reapers, only to become the underworld ferrymen for souls. Its not a job she wants, nor is it a job that is easy. But, to get rid of the demons flooding the hotel and conference rooms, Lisa and Mara must ferry the souls before they are lost forever.

I’m getting a real kick out of this series. The books are nice and bite sized - perfect for a summer read. Lisa learns more about her background as a Reaper and gets to spend some time in Las Vegas. Instead of relaxing and having fun, though, she has to deal with way too many spirits and a demon or two. Lisa may not be having fun, but I had fun reading the book.

This was listed on instafreebie and I couldn't resist, I'm glad I didn't. I like these kinda books as a break from my regular paranormal reading, sometime you just gotta have a little humor. This is quirky and fun, the plots good, the characters amusing and there's plenty of room to expand.

Really a ferry good read!

I have to report that I chuckled a lot on my way through this book. The adventures of the ferryman - sorry, ferrylady - continue from book 1 with verve and fun.

More questions! And a few giggles

Loved meeting Mara and Cam here. A little disappointed that larger than life Nate was so drab and colorless in this Novel. Loved the take on The Big C. Looking forward to book 3!

Who knew the girl knew Nyx

This romp through the improbable but very well told story is delight. The heroine faces some colossal challenges and exceeds them all. Her unknown lineage has a lot to do with it

Fun story that blends Greek mythology and Gods with a quirky UF scenario that left me wanting to know more about these characters. I loved how effortlessly the myth surrounding Hades, and the Underworld, fitted in with the modern day reapers and their doings.

Nice book

Good book it was enjoyable to read so different from most ghost books. Finding out she could do the ferry man's job was excellent. Then the twist at the end was brilliant.
