Two young women find themselves entangled in a deadly game with an ancient creature determined to wipe out all human life. Tristan and Blessing are demon-hunting drifters destined to protect mankind from evil, but to do so they must exist on the fringes of society. Feeding their own bloodlust by murdering local criminals, they begin a dangerous hunt for a resurrected demon named Anasztaizia. But when Tristan meets a beautiful dancer named Mira, she is willing to abandon her calling for her one chance at a normal life.
Believing Tristan has betrayed her, Blessing finds solace in her natural talent for witchcraft. Anasztaizia, able to corrupt Blessing by exploiting her jealousies and personal tragedies as well as her power, next turns her attention to Mira. Mira has been keeping a secret from Tristan, and she is willing to do anything to escape her agonizing fate. Even if it means abandoning her humanity. Even if it means Tristan must choose between Mira’s life and her own.

4.5 stars! I hope that there will be a sequel to this book, I enjoyed it that much!
This is a tale of strong women that have been abused, raped, beaten, totally ignored and who knows what else. Two of these women, almost girls really, become Hunters and the other a monster of epic proportions and, of course, there is an epic battle between them in the end. Who comes out the winner? You will have to read this to discover the answer to that question.
"Love and its constant companion, sorrow, birthed this atrocity of a world."
Hunters serve mankind though humans remain unaware of their sacrifices. To do this, Hunters must shun friendships and love, lest the objects of such be used as weapons against them. Hunters also have a bloodlust, one that can only be quenched by the blood of humans. To survive and accomplish their goals, Hunters only drink the blood of the human filth they seek to destroy.
There is magic, there are skills, there is testing...but so many questions remained unanswered for this reader. The single problem I had with this book is that I wanted more answers.
One thing I do have an answer to is this "How was the writing?" I thought this book was extremely well written and I found myself highlighting quite a few quotes throughout. One that particularly struck me was this one:
"Hell was real, Tristan thought, but it wasn't some burning pit in the afterlife. Hell was reliving all your regrets and failures over and over in one never-ending instant. Hell was not appreciating what you had, and only dwelling on what you didn't. Hell was not being able to forgive yourself."
Overall, I loved this book. It was different. It was fast paced. It had a unique story-line. It had strong women. It had an antagonist that was truly monstrous, yet the reader was compelled to pity her as well. These characters were well drawn, complicated and believable. What more could a reader ask for? A sequel, that's what!
Highly recommended for fans of dark fiction, horror, and excellent writing!
There were some things that worked and some things that didn't here. THOSE OF MY KIND may or may not fulfill your expectations depending of what they are.
I liked the effort made by Jennifer Loring to create an original mythology based on Romanian/Gypsy culture, only problem is that once the novel gets going it kind of falls flat and THOSE OF MY KIND becomes a little bit derivative. It's a story about hunters (witches), magic, good and evil and supernatural like you've probably read several and it doesn't have much of an identity.
I understand what Jennifer Loring tried to do. She wanted to tackle several themes with this novel (not just dark fantasy) and had to leave some stuff out to make a cohesive novel. The YA themes: the cycle of abuse, responsibility and empowerment are more the center of THOSE OF MY KIND and Jennifer Loring cleverly used the supernatural angle to develop the relationship between the characters, so that the novel wouldn't come off as gimmicky.
Overall it was a little blunt, but I cared about Tristan emancipating herself from the looming menace of "those of her kind" more than I cared about the underlying supernatural struggle, the powers or the sexy edge of the characters. If you're looking for an original dark fantasy novel, THOSE OF MY KIND might leave you cold but if you're looking for solid YA that doesn't wallow in purple feelings, it might just be what the doctor ordered. It's a novel you need to dive into with the right expecations.
Be ready to seriously get into this one. At first, I thought I was losing track of what was going on and had to reread a couple of paragraphs. Then I got into the protagonists challenges and the consequences that went with them. Jennifer takes you on a trip with an unusual character who has no choice in what she wants to be in her life. She is born with one purpose and one purpose only. And I'm not going to tell you what it is. If you want an easy read, this isn't the book. But if you want something that has a protagonist that is constantly challenged and has to deal with life and death choices this is it. As much as I want to tell you more I can't without creating spoilers.
This book has some strong female characters. This book took me by surprise in a good way. I was into the characters and they were interesting. The book is a little dark but I enjoyed it very much. I like to find books that aren't always what I "normally" read. * I received this book from a giveaway on LibraryThing in exchange for an honest review*
