A book rooted in Scandinavian Crime with a raw access to the human mind.
The girls spent almost all their time in the big swing – always facing each other. They were safe in front of the yellow house with the white windows. Watched over by people who loved them. But at the playground, in the shade of the big trees, they are being watched by someone else. Two sisters – inseparable – are torn apart by evil. Their innocence is shattered. What seemed like a life in luxury becomes a life in fear. Will they be able to overcome the forces that are out to destroy them? And who will help them?
“Dear Evy, it’s not a question of surviving. It’s a question of dying slowly, so things have time to change.”
Tina Lindegaard was born in 1963 when the world lost its innocence with the murder of John F. Kennedy and when a song became the symbol of one man’s dream that became the dream of thousands. Tina Lindegaard was born in a village in Denmark and spent her first 20 years in a small town where nature was never far away. She moved to Copenhagen, which is still her home. Natural surroundings formed her character in her childhood, and a busy career that has not always been in tune with her upbringing formed her adult life. These contrasts have created a field of tension with lots of room for creativity and formed a multi-faceted view of human nature. So.. I'm thinking whether to write a review for this one. It wasn't what I expected and unfortunately, as much as I hate to say it, Devil's Touch will get a low rating from me :(
This was an interesting and quick read. It wasn't what I was expecting based on the description.
I'm not always on board with third person perspective because sometimes it has the tendency to lose me, and parts of this did. I did respect the author's style, it was something I've definitely never encountered before, but it wasn't always for me.
There are a lot of characters and numerous plots that wind up intertwining here and there. I enjoyed the concept of leaving out mindless details, but I'd start to lose focus with the "he" and "she" interactions. It kind of kept me from getting 110% immersed in the story and into the lives of the characters. I very much felt like the reader staring down at their thoughts and actions from the page. It was just an element of removal for me.
Don't get me wrong, like I said, the story was entertaining. It had elements of thrill, murder, crime, and underworlds that aren't always happening out among the everyday folks. This is something I could see as a mini series or tv special on the Investigation Discovery Channel.. Which I'm slightly obsessed with... So, bravo to the author, there! Job well done!
