Michelle Powers writes the kind of thrillers that keep you up way past bedtime—just one more chapter, right? What started with her breakout novella, The First Murder, quickly snowballed into a full-blown obsession with killers, clues, and crime scenes (the fictional kind, of course). She’s the internationally recognized indie author behind the fan-favorite, The Dead Husband Club, and a growing stack of standalone thrillers that will make you second-guess everyone you know. In 2024 & 2025, she proudly earned the coveted KDP All-Star title—a gold star for authors who live on coffee, plot twists, and sheer grit. When she’s not working her day job in logistics or plotting her next murder (on paper, we swear), Michelle can be found writing at her desk with her Rottweiler sidekick, Ozzy, snoring nearby.

I absolutely loved “Willow Creek Crime Watch” by Michelle Powers! This was such a fun, addictive mystery thriller that perfectly balanced humor with suspense. I found myself laughing one minute and completely invested in unraveling the mystery the next. The pacing was spot on from beginning to end. And Reese...she had me yelling out loud at her more than once! Her decisions had me shaking my head, but they also made her such an entertaining character to follow.
If you're looking for a mystery that's full of laughs, suspense, and characters who will keep you talking to the pages, I highly recommend this one!

Summary:

"Willow Creek Crime Watch" is a suburban mystery thriller centered on Reese Blume, a web designer with an obsessive eye for detail. After her neighbor Sally is found murdered in the woods behind their quiet Iowa neighborhood, Reese becomes convinced that someone dangerous is living among the residents of Maple Drive. Rather than trusting the police alone, she installs an extensive home surveillance system and creates an online neighborhood watch group called Willow Creek Crime Watch, where residents share suspicious activity and local gossip.
When a second shocking death rocks the neighborhood, Reese's amateur investigation intensifies. With the help of her therapist husband Brad, outspoken neighbors Beverly and Allison, local baker Finn, and a mysterious new neighbor named Tyson, Reese begins piecing together clues hidden beneath the neighborhood's picture-perfect exterior. As the investigation unfolds, it becomes clear that someone is manipulating events - and watching Reese just as closely as she is watching everyone else.
The novel blends murder mystery, neighborhood drama, humor, and mounting suspense, asking whether constant surveillance makes people safer - or simply more paranoid.

Review:

"Willow Creek Crime Watch" is an entertaining, fast-paced thriller that feels like a blend of Rear Window, Only Murders in the Building, and a modern true-crime podcast. The strongest aspect of the novel is Reese herself. She's witty, flawed, observant, and relatable, making it easy to become invested in her investigation. Her fascination with cameras, neighborhood gossip, and patterns gives the story a unique identity that separates it from standard police procedurals.
The supporting cast is another highlight. Beverly, Allison, Finn, Brad, and Tyson all have distinct personalities, and their banter provides welcome moments of levity between darker scenes. The Halloween setting adds atmosphere without feeling gimmicky, creating a cozy backdrop that contrasts nicely with the murders.
The mystery is well-paced, with frequent revelations that encourage "just one more chapter." The online Crime Watch posts are an effective storytelling device, showing how rumors, fear, and speculation spread through a community after violent crimes.
While there are murders and suspenseful moments, the violence is not especially graphic, and the overall tone often leans toward cozy mystery with thriller elements.
"Willow Creek Crime Watch" is an enjoyable suburban thriller with memorable characters, a compelling amateur investigation, and an addictive "everyone is a suspect" atmosphere. If you enjoy neighborhood mysteries, amateur sleuths, and suspense built around secrets hiding behind perfect suburban homes, it's an easy recommendation.

Willow Creek Crime Watch

~Michelle Powers

In a community like Willow Creek, friendship and neighborly trust go a long way — until someone turns up dead. That's when Reese Blume steps up and builds the neighborhood's answer to fear itself: the Willow Creek Crime Watch.

As panic ripples through the neighborhood, Reese wraps her home in a fresh layer of protection — cameras — and her neighbors follow suit. Late-night alerts buzz across her phone. Grainy photos pile up in the crime watch group, hers and everyone else's. Suspicion simmers, and it drags secrets into the light that Reese never saw coming. Now those secrets have to stay buried to protect the people who know them, and to give a potential killer just enough rope to slip. Will Reese's deep dive into Willow Creek's security land her squarely on the killer's radar?

Reese is the driving force of this story — stubborn, focused, and fiercely determined to protect what's hers. And what's hers is Willow Creek, this little slice of paradise she refuses to let a killer invade. Her worries land, her grit earns your respect, and even her missteps feel forgivable. She's the friend next door, and you root for her from page one. The supporting cast pulls real weight too. Brad, Reese's husband, stands beside her even when he thinks she's gone overboard. Allison and Finn, who run the local bakery, keep the neighborhood's best interest front and center. Beverly is the doting grandmother — always good for porch talk and chocolate chip cookies. Tyson is the lawn-obsessed neighbor who's first in line to lend a hand. Randy will happily replay a story he's told a hundred times before. And a whole cast of others keeps that genuine, lived-in neighborhood feeling standing strong.

Each chapter slides smoothly into the next, and the tension is palpable. There's no sudden jolt of fear dropped at your feet. Instead, every immersive moment ratchets the dread up notch by notch until the anxiety feels like your own — until you're one of Willow Creek. Decorating for Halloween. Curtains twitching as neighbors sneak a peek at the action. Strange sounds echoing through empty houses. Shadows shifting on your home security feed. Powers conveys all of it through showing, never just telling.

Powers has done it again — a powerhouse novel that keeps you up long past bedtime, wanting… no, needing to know what happens next. Willow Creek Crime Watch is available now for pre-order on Amazon and releases September 5, 2026, just in time to top your Halloween reading list. Trust me: this one keeps you on edge right up to the final revelation.

As always, all opinions and reviews are of my own volition, Karen Brooks aka The Tx Lit Chic. I have not been promised any compensation, current or future, by the author or publisher for a fair and honest review of Willow Creek Crime Watch.

🔥 Absolutely devoured this book! 🔥

Michelle did it again! 🙌 I absolutely flew through this book! From the very first chapter, she had me hooked and wondering where this story was going to take me.

There’s something about a neighborhood full of perfectly kept houses, nosy neighbors, and people who seem to know everyone else’s business that makes for the PERFECT thriller setting. And honestly, this felt like it could happen in any quiet little neighborhood. You never really know what’s happening behind those closed doors. 👀

I loved the whole “nosy neighbor” aspect because sometimes the person who seems to be sticking their nose where it doesn’t belong may actually be the one person paying attention when everyone else isn’t. And sometimes, that nosy neighbor might just be the person who ends up saving the day!

The twists kept me second-guessing what I thought I knew, and every time I thought I had things figured out, something else came along to make me question everything. Michelle does such a great job creating that feeling of something isn’t quite right and keeping the suspense going until the very end.

And that ending.... Matlock was the real MVP! 😂 If you know, you know!

If you’re a fan of thrillers with secrets, suspicious neighbors, unexpected twists, and plenty of guessing along the way, definitely give this one a read. It kept me entertained from beginning to end!

Willow Creek Crime Watch was so good. I laughed at some scenes, jumped at some scenes and thought that the mystery and suspense was just perfect in this story. The characters were amazing and Michelle was so on point with how these characters reacted to each scene. Spectacular storyline and a must read book.

Who knew a neighborhood watch group could be this addictive? Willow Creek Crime Watch is a twisty, suspenseful ride filled with secrets, suspicion, a touch of humour, and just the right amount of paranoia. I’ll never look at a doorbell camera the same way again!

This book had me just by the title. I couldn’t wait to see what I was in for.

Michelle nailed that creeping, suburban paranoia—where every neighbor suddenly feels a little too interested, a little too watchful. Reese’s spiral into amateur sleuthing feels uncomfortably real, and the book plays with that tension beautifully: the late‑night clips, the odd coincidences, the way normal people start looking guilty when you stare long enough. It’s a fast, addictive read that had me second‑guessing every character and loving every twist, especially the way it turns something as mundane as a neighborhood watch page into pure dread.
I almost forgot to mention how amazing the cover is! Great job!
