NICHOLE 👏🏼 VAN 👏🏼 does it every time!
This book is filled with yearning, heartache, and character depth. I love how Van spins a story and offers opportunities for her characters to grow and develop. Every time I read one of her books I question why I haven’t started on her backlist yet, because I neeeeeeed to read more of her books.
If you’ve read her books before you will absolutely love A Lass Beloved, and if you haven’t, this is book 2 in a stand alone series. It does and can stand alone, but book 1, A Tartan Love, I also gave 5 stars and loved so you should plan to read it too!

You know when a book feels like a warm hug while teaching you about empathy, love, and that everyone has a purpose and belongs? A Lass Beloved was that for me.
It broke my heart, reminded me that I am always wanted, and to treat everyone around me with the kindness they deserve. This story was just simply beautiful.
Matthias is so soft and the most patient MMC. He is absolutely perfect for Cecily and her needs. I loved these two together. Their romance is gentle, sweet, and so tender.
Nichole wrote another absolutely delightful story that I will long remember. Highly recommend it! You just can't go wrong with her books.

Fan-freaking-tastic!! Loved this so much! The first two books in this series have been incredibly good. Can’t wait for the release of the rest of the series.
Plot- Engaging! To the point that I stayed up until 2am to finish it.
Characters- Loved the FMC and the MMC. I liked the disability rep, too, with the MMC having been born without his lower right arm.
In regards to the MMC, I’m pleasantly surprised I liked him so much since I wasn’t a huge fan of Matt in the first book (which I also loved, btw). He certainly redeemed himself in this book. And it was a natural character arc. He didn’t go from self pitying hermit to confident stud in 24 hours. It was a journey and it felt genuine. And the impact that the FMC had on his life had a lot to do with it.
I’m adding this book to my “earth shattering scene or kiss” bookshelf bc of that fabulous scene where he takes control like a boss, protecting the FMC. That’s a scene to reread and relish!
Romance- High chemistry! Soooo good!

I really liked how the author was true to the cultural standards at the time. She acknowledged whenever anything untoward was happening and the characters grappled with that every time they had to make a decision that could have societal ramifications. It felt genuine and true to the time period.
I read a review that mentioned this book was really sad and hard to read, so I was a little hesitant since I despise books that are depressing or discouraging. However, this was book not at all a downer. I mean, sure, it was sad that some characters had been abused (off page, in their past). That abuse caused issues with their current lives (main focus of the book, tbh), but the book didn’t focus on the abuse itself. I didn’t find it hard to read at all, personally. The author didn’t punish the characters with cruel plot points (where nothing works out in their favor, etc) and the characters didn’t aggravate me. The pacing was spot on. The book was hopeful and happy and I loved it!

I really don't know how to rate this.
On the one hand, for much of this story, it was absolutely beautiful.
Matt is the greenest of Green flags. Missing an arm, he has been subject to very cruel remarks by both family and the Regency society around him. When he discovers that his housekeeper is a woman who used to be in the upper classes, and realizes WHY she's been brought so low, he is an absolute sweet heart to her. His love and care for her is constant. Even when it gets to the frustrating part, he is still kind.
The FMC starts out very sweet, yet broken. I really liked her at first.
And then she's faced with her biggest fear and what does she do?
Okay, I think I've settled on 3 stars.
All three stars are for Matt.
One star removed is for the weird hugging sessions. If I had a dollar for every time they said 'this isn't done, but...', I'd go buy another book off my tbr.
The other star removed is for the behavior of the FMC at the end.
If you want to have happy sighs at the beginning but like the idea of throwing the book across the room at the end, then this book is for you! In all seriousness, maybe if you like independent, don't need no man, women who get freedom but still choose the guy, mayybbbeee you'd like this, I don't know.
Nichole Van has written some other novels I have enjoyed, so I'm sure I'll read more of her works in the future.

Pains me, it really really does, to give a Nichole Van book anything less than 5 stars as she is a personal favorite author and her Penn Leith series will be a LIFETIME favorite of mine, but I have to say, this one felt very repetitive for me and lacked a truly compelling plot, and that's despite my abiding love for Lord Matthias Kinsey as he was a fantastic leading man to root for. I just felt it was a bit lack luster and I wasn't as drawn back into it as I have her previous novels. The yearning was there though - oh, the yearning. So, if you love an atmospheric, character-centric, will-they-won't-they slow burn historical romance, this may be just the thing for you, but for me, it was a bit too repetitive.
Will continue to be an auto-buy author for me though!

Aww, this story was so sweet and full of emotional depth and healing.
I was so excited to read Matthias’s story, and it didn’t disappoint.
It’s everything I hoped for in terms of yearning, anguish, and heartache! Ufff, I went through every emotion reading this—sadness, overwhelming tenderness, swooning, joy... ❤️🩹
Matt is THE SWEETEST —honestly, it makes me want to marry him myself.
Even though I felt the pain of what he’s been through in his life, this journey of healing, self-discovery, and personal growth was beautiful to see 🥹
The same goes for Cecily—her process of inner healing touched my heart, and my eyes welled up with tears as I learned her story: the loss of the innocent, dreamy young lady she once was, and the heart-wrenching feeling of thinking about what might have been.
This book has many elements that I loved: Scotland, of course; an ancient castle on the North Sea; horses; getting a glimpse of Isla and Tavish (characters from the previous book); and, above all, the romance 🤌🏻
Although Matthias had harbored a platonic love for Cecily for many years, their true relationship began when they met much later in an unlikely place and with different social statuses.
I really enjoyed the sincere friendship they built, rooted in trust and mutual support, and then watching their attraction grow until it reached the glorious culmination of their feelings and love! 🫠
It was particularly moving to see this from Matt’s perspective—someone who, his entire life, has never experienced affection, romantic love, or even physical contact outside of his family, and who deserves to be loved fully for the wonderful man he is.
I can’t wait to learn the stories of the other members of these families.
Nichole Van has a way of breaking your heart and then bringing it back to life with her books. Seriously, I’ve read almost all of her books, and they all hit you right there.
I highly recommend this book, and although it can be read as a standalone, I strongly recommend reading "A Tartan Love" first, as you’ll understand the story and context much better. Plus, it’s a swoon-worthy book—one of my absolute favorites 💯

I so wanted to give this book a higher rating. The cover is beautiful, the love story was so sweet and clean and Matthias is such an amazing character. And of course, the writing is always so beautiful from Nichole. I got frustrated by the end of the book. Obviously they end up together, but I would have written how they got there differently. I may be in the minority, but I didn’t understand Cecily’s indecision in regard to whether she loved him or not. I understand the need for her to be returned to her proper station for society’s and Gray’s sake, but her attitude about all of it did not make sense to me. The idea that she would always wonder if she really loved Matt because she married him for safety from her past abuser was dumb. Of course you love the man. Of course you would choose him. He’s amazing. He’s been patient and kind and kept your secrets. He helped you heal from past abuse and kept you safe. But you need to be free first so you can really know that you would choose him?! It felt like unrealistic feelings after all they had been through. Especially as a fellow woman. I would be like, “YES! I absolutely volunteer as tribute, please save me and keep me safe!”
She gets what she wants—her freedom and her old life back with no threats to her safety and a week later, all she wants is him. 😑 DUH! I have a hard time with female characters who crave independence and “freedom.” Maybe it’s because I can’t relate. Give me the man. Absolutely, every time. Especially if he’s this kind, gentle soul who is absolute besotted with you. Lord lady. 🙄

"Love and a purpose. I can't think of two more precious things,"
Oh my heart… I just fell in love with Matthias. This story is heartbreaking, emotional & I loved every minute of it. Lord Matthias was born without a hand. He is a bit of recluse and has grown tired of just enduring life. So he has decided that it’s time to make some changes. He lets out a castle deep in the Highlands where he plans to retrain horses to sale for a profit. Cecily Armstrong once had everything but is now a penniless housekeeper. Matthias instantly recognizes his new housekeeper from years ago. But Cicely is keeping secrets that might just come back to haunt her. I loved watching these two come together to not only trust each other but to help each other heal. It’s full of trauma, mystery, secrets, suspense, horses, healing & the romance is everything. I seriously couldn’t put it down & stayed up late to finish. I mean sleep is highly over rated 😉 This is the second book in The Earls of Cairnfell series and can be read as a standalone but I’d strongly suggest reading A Tartan Love first because it’s fantastic too!

I’m giving this 2.5 stars, although I can see why it might deserve closer to 3. There were some genuinely interesting elements, especially the male character being born without a right hand. In a time when disabilities could be viewed as a curse on the family or even a sign that someone was marked by Satan, it shaped nearly every aspect of his life. I thought that was a fascinating concept and probably the part of the story that interested me most.
Of course, he’s also handsome, because apparently the only thing missing from the historical-romance checklist was a swoon-worthy man with one hand. 😂 And then there’s the beautiful, tragic woman he fell in love with ten years earlier without ever actually speaking to her, who suddenly ends up in his life in the middle of nowhere Scotland. Naturally, the big question becomes: does she really love him for who he is, or does she simply need rescuing?
And that pretty much sums up my feelings about the book. I’m realizing these historical romances just aren’t my vibe anymore. They absolutely used to be, but I’m finding myself wanting more depth and complexity. This felt a little too much like a Hallmark movie—sweet, romantic, predictable, and formulaic. Romance, sweet, period; series but stand alone read
Matthias and Cecily’s story came about as a past meeting in the present. Matthias had noticed her during her come out but was too reserved due to his arm deformity to speak with her as she was surrounded by admirers. Now seeing her with a different name as a housekeeper in the estate he is letting for a year brings all his feelings to the forefront.
Strong supporting characters, well-described setting, lovely moments caring for one another even as they fought the societal restrictions of master and staff made for a lovely fall. Richly detailed, sweet moments, and two hurting honest hearts made for a lovely read.
More of a 4.5 for me as a reader.

I think this is my favorite series by Nichole. I just love the characters, their growth and development and how every man is not a walking red flag. Matthias, wrongly treated his entire life takes choices into his own hands and starts to make a life for himself. After ten years, he comes back across a lady whom opened the doors of his heart. Cecily has been hurt in so many ways and Matthias calm nature is a balm to her wounding…. But neither come along easy. I love this story. I love the development…. And perhaps my heart is softening ever so slightly to Piers so that when his story comes along, I wont still completely dislike him.

Oh you guys. This book is just BEAUTIFUL. It's tender and aching and the romance is just SO, SO GOOD. Nichole's gorgeous prose creates such a beautiful arc for both our reclusive Lord Mathias and socialite turned housekeeper Cecily. I loved watching their friendship bloom and their feelings for each other take flight in a situation that was impossible according to both society at large, and because of their own personal traumas (check content warnings). The layers of healing and hurt with hope and desire were just so beautifully and intricately woven together. I was captivated.
This is book 2 in the Earls of Cairnfell series and *could* be read as a standalone but I would HIGHLY recommend reading book 1 first (A Tartan Love) so that you avoid any spoilers (and because that book is also SO, SO GOOD!).
In case it's not clear - I highly recommend this gorgeous book!

Loved every second!!! This is a proper romance. But the kisses were amazing. The looks and the small touches. This book just hit the spot.Such good tension!!!! I debated four stars because it was so sad in places. These two go through so much and it was hard to read. For all that tho watching these two fall in love was over the top good. Love Van!!!

Oh my goodness, how I loved this book! I need all the wounded MMC stories and this is one of the best with that type of character. I adored Matt and Cecily and their romance is one of my all time favorites. This story gave me all the feels and is now among my favorites of Nichole’s books. Perfection!

Nichole Van and her regency books set in Scotland are my absolute favorite books of all time. This particular series is spectacular! I loved getting to know Lord Matthias and his sweet and gentle soul. The characters, setting, and plot line are so elegantly written. Five stars all the way. I only wish Nichole could write faster so I’d have more of her novels to enjoy.

Cecily dropped her head into her hands. Spikes lodged in her chest, snagging and tearing her lungs with every breath. She pressed the heels of her hands to her eyes and choked on a sob. No! her mind howled. A hand cupped the side of her head. She opened her eyes to see a watery Matthias kneeling before her. With trembling fingers, she wiped a tear from his face. And then followed it with her lips, pressing them first to his cheek and then his eyes. He tipped his head up and caught her mouth with his. Cecily hiccupped and returned his kiss with frantic intensity. Hoping if she kissed him hard enough—long enough, fierce enough—he would change his mind. “I want you to have freedom, Cecily. I will always and forever give five stars to any Nichole Van book. Her writing and characters get me everytime. It wasn’t my favorite of hers (there are just so many good ones) but still five star. Both of these characters were so emotionally abused in their lives so there was a lot of healing that needed to happen. It was an emotional book full of sadness, hurt, but also healing and hope. I love the kindness shown by both characters and how quick they were to understand and forgive each other. It was an emotional book so only read if you are prepared! I’m excited for more books with these characters. I want Gray’s redemption so bad.
SPOILERS and book notes:
I love this analogy: “Change had much in common with an ill-tempered tabby cat. Lord Matthias Kinsey felt rather emphatic on the point. One could seek for Change under sofas and beds—pleading in dulcet tones—only for it to dart away on an angry hiss. And yet, when least wanted, Change leapt into your lap, batted aside your book, and pricked your chest with its sharp claws, demanding attention. For years, Change had eluded Matt. Tonight, however, he had decided to snatch Change by the tail and drag it yowling into the light.” At the ball where Matt attended he had been enraptured by Cecily MOUlten from the start. “In addition to her beauty, Matt suspected that Miss Moulton was kind.” People said this about Matt bc he is missing an arm below the elbow: “A sign of the devil. Not worth having.” He didn’t talk to her!! Now it’s eleven years later 1820!!!
Matt is 32yo!! He has a talent for training horses and will do so on his own estate! “A missing right hand hadn’t prevented Matt from becoming an accomplished horseman. In the saddle, he was any man’s equal.” What Cecilly thinks when she watches Matt help her stuck gig out of the mud: “A competent man going about doing competent things always spiked her admiration.” And when he finally made eye contact with her: “Brown eyes. Soft and calm. Kind. The gaze of an old soul—one who had seen much of life and had chosen quiet and peace.” He keeps to himself at the castle but: “In short, everyone at Avoch liked Lord Matthias. However, as the days passed, Cecily feared that his lordship did not quite like himself.” After many visits from ladies: “He glanced up at the rustle of her skirts, eyes going from wary to relieved. That relief ensnared her . . . a rush of gladness that, at the very least, her presence did not cause him distress.” Oh my HECK. The moment that Matt found out the reason she had run and hidden herself as a housekeeper was bc violence done by other men: “He was not given to anger. In fact, he could rarely recall feeling the emotion. Frustration and despair were his closest companions. But fury? The sort that set his blood to pumping and colored the world red? That he rarely felt. But in this moment, Matt was quite sure, had he a pistol to hand, he would happily send a bullet through the black heart of every man who had placed such a bleak expression on Cecily Moulton’s face.” Cecily asked to see his stump and he agreed! “The skin around the end of his arm was smooth and unmarred, created precisely as God intended. “Appalled?” he asked in that same soft voice. “No. Ye appear perfectly formed.” She lifted her gaze and let him read the sincerity there. “Has anyone ever shaken your right hand?” “I hate to be the bearer of bad news, Mrs. Armstrong, but I don’t have a right hand.” He said the words so soft, so dry, it took a moment for the gallows humor to land. She is going to help heal his confidence and conversation skills. They practice dancing and then practice hugging. They are both so emotionally scarred that a hug affects them so much. The creepy Drempton sent her a letter telling her he knows where she is. Sooo: ““Drempton won’t reach you, Cecily.” His voice rang with certainty. “You don’t need to run.” “You can’t know that.” “I do. He won’t reach you because he will have to go through me and the might of the Dukedom of Grayburn. I won’t let that happen.” “Matthias . . .” She watched his chest rise and fall on a deep breath, as if he were nervous. But when he met her gaze, his eyes blazed with determination. “Marry me, Cecily.” His declaration stole her breath. “Pardon?” “Marry me. Let me give you the protection of my name.” She tried to come up with excuses but he cancelled every one of them. ““But none of this matters if you don’t want to marry me. Cecily, do you wish to marry me?” Silence. She has been to public dances but won’t dance bc only Matthias embrace will do. And he shows up with Isla and her husband at the ball! “He stilled in her arms. “You love me?” Her wretched tears fell faster. “Of course I do! You plied me with horses and kindness and that atrociously handsome face of yours. Any sane lady would fall head over heels in love with you! But, oh, Matthias . . . I am so glad that lady was me.” He asked her to marry him and she interrupted and said YES. He grinned. “Well, then, consider yourself my betrothed.”

Oh my heart, Nichole Van breaks it, then deftly stitches it back together Every. Single. Time. I absolutely adored A Lass Beloved! I could not put it down. One minute I was bawling my eyes out, the next chuckling, & then grinning like a fool. The utterly beautiful prose, heart achingly lovely romance, & amazing symbolism completely captured my soul.

Their achingly lovely romance completely touched my heart & the ending had me weeping with joy.

This is the second book in the Earls of Cairnfell series and another wonderful story from Nichole!
I am not someone that usually goes into books blind (meaning not reading the synopsis or much about the book before starting it). I understand why other people like the experience, but I just can’t do it and I usually try to get a feel for whether a book is right for me before deciding to pick it up. But in this case I decided to go in completely blind since I have never read a Nichole Van book I disliked and I loved the previous book in the series. I had no idea what any of the tropes were or which characters the book would even be about and it was so fun to watch it all unfold! If you also want to go in blind stop reading here and know that I definitely recommend it! ☺️
But if you want to know a bit more about what to expect (while still avoiding anything too revealing) read on:…I am so glad she chose the characters she did and it was wonderful having a male lead that is not like every other hero. He was socially awkward and carrying some heavy baggage but so good hearted and ready to shine when the circumstances were right. It was so satisfying watching his development and seeing him realize his worth.
The romance was so tender and it unfolded slowly as we could see two hurt people gradually find peace and healing. I loved how all the little moments were made so much more significant by the deep appreciation the characters had for them. There were some really heartbreaking elements to this story but it was heartwarming to see the healing and growth and ultimate joy.
I can’t wait to see where this series goes next! There are definitely hints of what’s to come 👀.

I knew I was going to love this book, but I was not prepared for much of an effect it would have on me. Nichole Van truly writes some of the most exquisite historical romances I've ever had the pleasure of reading. Her writing is impeccable, her characters fight HARD for their happy ending, and how she describes falling in love and yearning for someone who can never be yours is EXCEPTIONAL.
I knew from the prologue that I was going to be an absolute goner for Matthias, and I was completely correct lol. This sweet, shy man has dealt with so much judgement and harassment his WHOLE life, and yet he still hasn't let him fully harden his heart. In fact, he just WANTS to love someone that much more. Cecily is the sweetest, and again, hasn't let the cruelties of the past ten years harden her to those around her. She is so soft (and REMAINS soft!!), and at the same time has an incredible strength and courage about her that was so admirable.
I thought Nichole Van wrote about DV in the 19th century in an exceedingly compassionate way, without shying away from the horrors that women faced and the measures they might need to take in order to secure their physical safety. How she wrote about finding love while managing complex PTSD was incredible, and both characters moved slowly through the healing process in order to love one another best. This book deals with heavy themes in such a beautiful way, and Matthias and Cecily are two characters who genuinely deserve every happiness in this world!! As always, the romance is absolutely delicious, and BOY can she write a kissing scene WOWOWOW
((total side note: I just *know* when we get to Gray's story I'm going to lose my mind. that man is a castle just WAITING to crumble hahahaha)

What a stunning book! I loved Matthias in the previous story so was thrilled this next book was about him, and it delivered. I loved it even more than the first. Both Matthias and Lady Cecily had experience with trauma and pain from those who should have loved them. It has made him reserved and sometimes awkward, and has forced her into hiding. But when these two wounded souls meet they begin to find healing, hope and new purpose.
I loved seeing Matt grow and come into his own! He had hurts and insecurities but he would not be bullied or fail to fight ANYONE for his beloved, nor would he fail to sacrifice his own desires for her true freedom. I loved his tenderness and quiet strength, his resilience and steadfast character. He was the definition of a swoony hero.
What Cecily had endured was appalling, but her spirit was not broken. I appreciated the reality of her healing journey, that she didn't simply get over her trauma because Matt was handsome and kind but there were steps to building trust and intimacy. I loved how fully they both saw each other for who they were, acknowledging and drawing out the best, challenging each other but not demanding change.
Their romance was so sweet and moving! It had loads of chemistry and genuine tension, based on their disparite situations as well as some genuine danger. The ending managed to surprise me but was immensely satisfying. Nichole continues to be a favorite author and I cannot wait for the rest of this series!

This book was exactly what it needed to be. If you've read A Tartan Love and then go into this book, you will see (and appreciate) the way Nichole can write a completely different story because she knows her characters deeply.
I adored Matthias and Cecily. They were perfect for each other. It was wonderfully tender to see how understanding and heroic he was to her, and I loved how both characters had some growth to do and they achieved it together.... swoon.
The setting was perfect as always. The dialogue and historical accuracy were on point. Nichole Never disappoints here and the pacing was well done. It had a steady and anticipatory build to some truly memorable moments.
I simply adore how Nichole writes. It's addictive and so well thought out. I guarantee you've never read a book like this one. It's a perfect companion novel to A Tartan Love.
THOUGHTS:
I would have liked to see Cecily actually be a housekeeper. We never truly interact with much of the staff except the butler and I would have liked to see more depth in her character as this line of work has been a HUGE part of her life.
There were a couple other times where I wanted more showing and not telling and I would have liked a bit more angst during that last ball scene. It was a bit rushed for me.

Fuck yes, it was THAT good.
It’s closed door/ fade to black but considering the plot, that part made a lot of sense, and it makes the payoff and yearning all the better
Main characters: well developed, engaging, with truly horrific backstories. (Yet not comically overdone- realistic to the time period) What was great about these MCs was that they both had trauma, sure. They had jagged edges and places for healing, but weren’t bitter and lashing out constantly. They both accepted the help they needed to deal with their own shit, and that is beautiful.
Disability rep: Solid, the realities of the ableism he experienced- both overt and in more subtle ways shows up.
-Also solid representation of women’s rights and options of the time, and how those intersected with ableism and class issues.
Antagonist(s) also very well done. Instead of one mustache twirling evil villain, we have a main abusive asshole, and someone else with a more complicated relationship / lashing out from his own issues. Not all relationships are black and white, some are really complex, and sometimes we don’t realize how unhealthy the dynamic is.
I don’t remember the last time a book made me cry, but this one did. Twice. (And I’m not mad about it) . Why have I never read this author before?? What am I even doing? BRB gonna rearrange my TBR.
This might honestly make it into my top 10 of all time.

A wonderfully sweet story of healing and bring brave enough to chase after change, Nichole Van once again swept me off my feet to the mountains of Scotland in a last beloved.
I love Matt’s character, a middle child born with the physical defect of a missing arm. He was incredibly wholesome and did not let his past experiences kill his warm heart. It must be said this is a family of yearners, and oh my, did Matt yearn. Not only for his love, but for a life free from the shadow of his brother and the cruel eyes of society.
Cecily was a very similar creature, though her circumstances were not the same as Matt. She was also a character whose strength was shown not in action or word, but in her determination for a better life and her fight against despair.
It must be said this is not an angst filled story, but rather one at a slower pace as both characters slowly begin to accept parts of themselves they did not expect. The romance was on the sweeter side for seasoned Van Fans, tender but not without its moments of sizzle.
I also enjoyed a good amount of world building, family lore, and the return of secondary characters including my personal favorite, Gray. He’s an unapologetic diva - never change Gray. I can say in full view of the series and upcoming books A Lass Beloved will surely serve as a sweet treat in the lineup. I cannot wait for the next installment.

Dare I say I’ve found a new favorite Nichole Van book? Oh my gosh, this book! MATTHIAS! Alright, after book one I was so excited for his story. And may I say, it delivered. I loved everything about this story.
Matthias has been through so much. So much that I even want to fight these people in his life. What the heck, who says these things?!? And then we bring in poor broken Cecily and I want to fight more people. But Matt is so gentle and caring and kind with Cecily that now I want to cry.
This story was such a beautiful journey and I was enraptured with it all. Matt and Cecily had the most gentle and kind love. And the way the household and especially Rawlins were so loving of Cecily, well that shows you her kind and gentle character. Anyway if you haven’t read a Nichole book yet, (first off shame on you,) and second go ahead and start with this one. It is incredibly lovely.
And also now I can’t wait for Gray’s story. I need him to be redeemed. I see his little spark of kindness underneath his rough edges.
I only had two tiny notes while reading because of said enrapture with the book but here they are:

One-Liner Synopsis: two injured souls suffering from excessive internal dialogue disease help each other heal from past trauma and fall in love. (Sadly, there was no cure for the thought diarrhea.)
But seriously, this was a sweet book with lots of potential and character development, with lovely writing style. But fair warning: very, very little actually happens, which is why I have to reluctantly give it a 3. Most of the book consists of the mains going on in their own heads about all the things. And, taking a line from Bridget Jones Diary, the climax is “brief…and perfunctory”…essentially a nothing-burger….it could have been so much more!! Toward the end, I felt weary of the pacing and just needed things to wrap up. I wanted/needed more action (“less talking, more doing”) to fully enjoy the story.
Additionally, this is Book 2 in a four part series, and the weaving and connection between past/present/future storylines that Van is usually so skilled at felt clunky and forced this time around. Overall, it feels like a big departure from the action, flow, and deep connections of other series (Tartan and Penn-Leith, for example, which are just wonderful and ones I return to way too often!)

There's something about the way Nichole Van writes that makes you feel as though you are right there in the Highlands with the characters. I love it so much! And I loved this book, as well.
I love the way Matthias had seen Cecily as a young debutante and fallen in love with her then and there. When he finds her again, using a different name, and working as his house keeper, he wonders just what had happened. But he kept her secret, and his own. I love the way he reaches for his own dreams, despite what others may see as his limits. He dreams of being a horse trainer and rehabilitator. As such, he's very patient.

“Do you understand how simple this is? I’m not interested in marrying a business venture or an estate. I want you, and I will counter your concerns unless you say you don’t want me. That is the only rejection I will accept.”
These characters were so broken, but so kind and compassionate. Cecily and Matthias perfectly complimented each other and their backstories were horrific, but necessary to shaping who they were and how they came together. If I’m being honest though, I thought most of the book was kind of slow. These two had good tension, but I wasn’t feeling a ton of passion or chemistry. Then… THEEEEEEEEEEEN… their first kiss happened (seriously melted) around 70% and the rest of the book was exploding with tension, chemistry, longing, and passion. So it took a while to get there, but I understand how important their backstories were and how the slow burn and slower spots were necessary.

These characters were so broken, but so kind and compassionate. Cecily and Matthias perfectly complimented each other and their backstories were horrific, but necessary to shaping who they were and how they came together. If I’m being honest though, I thought most of the book was kind of slow. These two had good tension, but I wasn’t feeling a ton of passion or chemistry. Then… THEEEEEEEEEEEN… their first kiss happened (seriously melted) around 70% and the rest of the book was exploding with tension, chemistry, longing, and passion. So it took a while to get there, but I understand how important their backstories were and how the slow burn and slower spots were necessary.

Another lovely romance from Nichole Van! Her characters are always nuanced, emotionally intelligent, and also perfectly flawed. Their growth always contains relatable and heartwarming themes that set Nichole Van apart from other romances authors for me. I know what to expect from her, and she never lets me down!
This book has top-notch yearning and the he-falls-first trope. I loved the thriller-ish element to the plot as well. I felt the suspense!
My only hesitancy with this book is that the characters’ inner thoughts felt repetitive for the first 60% of the book. That made the pacing feel off to me, and I struggled to pick it up. But the last 40% was perfection, and I adored the ending.
