Rachel Ellison has one rule: No one messes with her daughter.
After years of watching her daughter endure relentless bullying, Rachel Ellison has finally given Avery the fresh start she deserves at the prestigious St. Alden’s Academy. So when the school’s most popular students suddenly take an interest in her daughter, Rachel should be relieved.
But she isn’t.
The teenagers remind Rachel too much of Avery’s old bullies. They’re charming. Well-liked. And impossible to resist.
Then Belladonna Estates’ golden girl and the group’s magnetic leader, Scarlett Davenport, is found dead after a party.
As the investigation into Scarlett’s death begins, Rachel’s worst fears are realized. Avery’s new friends don’t stand beside her; they help build the case against her.
And Avery becomes the prime suspect.
Rachel knows her docile daughter isn’t a killer. She can’t be. But Avery doesn’t remember what happened that night, and she has no alibi. Before Avery can defend herself, everyone in Belladonna Estates has already decided she’s guilty.
Rachel has always believed she knows what’s best for her daughter. But protecting Avery in a neighborhood desperate for someone to blame may be the very thing that destroys them both.
A twisty domestic thriller filled with dark secrets, family betrayal, morally gray women, wealthy neighborhoods, shocking twists, and impossible choices. Perfect for fans of domestic suspense where no one can be trusted.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This is a gripping, fast-paced thriller that refuses to let go! I feel privileged to have read an early copy of this book (a huge thank you to Rita Maxil!). Let me tell you: what an absolute ride! With its short chapters and relentless, fast-paced momentum, I was completely gripped from start to finish. In fact, if real life hadn't demanded my attention this weekend, I easily would have devoured the entire book in a single sitting!
The story centers on a tragic event at Belladonna Estate (this estate is a chaotic, drama-filled mess! 🥴). Avery, an intelligent, socially-akward new girl at school (she almost reminds me of Bella in the Twilight movies), finds herself invited into the most popular girls' inner circle. But after attending a popular schoolboy's party, things go terribly wrong and Avery is accused of causing the tragedy... The author structuralises this brilliantly! We follow Avery through a tense mix of police interviews and vivid flashbacks to the night of the party. The tension never wavers as the story is also told through the perspective of Avery's mother and a "friend".
This isn't a "whodunnit" mystery. It is a pure, psychological thriller. You won't spend your time guessing who is responsible, but rather questioning the 'why' and the 'how' as the dark layers of the story unfold.
I'm a sucker for a deep backstory, and this book delivers a spectacular one.
⚠️ Sensitive themes throughout the story that some readers may find triggering.
If you love structural, multi-POV thrillers that keep your heart rate up, put this one on your radar immediately!
At its heart, She Deserved It is about a girl who is bullied throughout her entire childhood and a mom who will do absolutely anything to protect her.
In this one we return to Belladonna Estates for more neighborhood drama. This time it revolves around a popular group of high school students and the events that take place at a party. The story opens on a scene from the party where Avery wakes up after a drunken night and can’t remember what happened. All she does know is that her friend Scarlett is dead. What happened and why is everyone blaming Avery?
The alternating timelines and different POVs take the reader back through the night and give glimpses as to what may actually have happened, who may be responsible and what part others may have played in this horrible tragedy.
I breezed right on through in one day, needing to know who killed Scarlett and why! The chapters are shorts and will keep you tapping that Kindle! If you enjoy domestic popcorn thrillers that will have you flipping pages and ignoring all your responsibilities, then this one is for you.
✨Thank you to Rita Maxil for the advance copy. I’ll be looking forward to the next in this exciting series!
“She Deserved It” by Rita Maxil is another great domestic thriller set in Belladonna Estates! I absolutely love morally gray characters! It’s twisty, full of secrets, and kept me hooked from beginning to end. I read it in one sitting because I just couldn't put it down!
Thank you to Rita Maxil for an advanced copy of this title!
She Deserved It is a great addition to the Secrets of Belladonna Estates series. I was hooked early on and flew through the short chapters, eager to see how everything would unfold. The story moves between Avery and Rachel’s POVs and different points in time, but the timelines are easy to follow and the shifting perspectives add to the suspense. Both Avery and Rachel were characters I found easy to sympathize with and root for, which made me even more invested in their stories. There were several twists I didn’t see coming, and I especially enjoyed watching all the pieces come together. This was a quick, engaging read that kept me turning the pages, and I’m already looking forward to the next installment! If you like fast-paced domestic thrillers, dual POVs, and sympathetic characters with plenty of twists, then you will love this book (and this entire series!)

My first ARC book and I loved it! The writing is so great and the author does an amazing job with the story that you don’t want to stop reading. The chapters are short and well written but the writing is so creative and thrilling you just want to keep reading. I love all the twists and turns. Just when you think you have it figured it out another one comes. The characters were well written yet vague enough you don’t really know them to know where the story is going. This is my second book from this author and I really liked ‘She Never Lived Here’ as well. It’s set in the same neighborhood but with different families. Really creative and it will have me coming back for more in this series. Great, easy, thrilling book series!
Rachel and Avery are a close mum and daughter single parent duo. Avery is continuously bullied and has to move towns and schools. At her new school she seems to be befriended by the pretty popular girls who try to get her to a party. Her mum is suspicious of the intent and motives and worries this is another bully trap.
Avery (the daughter) drinks too much at the party and can’t remember a lot of the details. During the party the popular girl at school is murdered and with no alibi and no memory suspicion turns to Avery. Rachel (the mum) is going out of her way and out of her mind to protect her daughter.
If you love fast paced and easy to read popcorn style thrillers I can 100% recommend this one. I seemed to pick up and not stop until I’d finished it.

She Deserved It wasted absolutely no time getting started. It was fast-paced, twisty, and had me flying through the chapters because I needed to know what was going to happen next. I definitely stayed up way too late with this one.
And the ending? I did NOT guess it. I love when a thriller can actually surprise me, and this one got me. Rita Maxil has done it again with another really fun thriller. I’m already ready to see what other secrets and drama are hiding around Belladonna Estates.
Thank you to Rita Maxil for providing me with an advance copy in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
Avery is a high achieving senior who just moved to a new place to attend a prestigious school on scholarship. Being new, she tries to lay low so she doesn't attract any bullies. Until one day, the most Popular girl befriends her and takes her out to a party. Her mom is reluctant go let her go, but Avery promises to check in. Teens, alcohol, jealousy, and bad decisions lead to a tragic outcome. Who's to blame? Everyone had a part in the events leading up go it. What happens now? Tragedies in upper society don't just happen. Someone must pay a price. As the evidence piles up and relationships unravel, who do you think will pay? I received an advanced reader copy for an honest review.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It hooked me from the first page and with its short chapters and dual POV and timelines (two of my favorites!) it held my interest the whole time. It deals with bullying and the effects it has, not only on the one being bullied, but the whole family. It shows the lengths this mother will go to protect her daughter. I really sympathized with Avery throughout. There were some great twists that I did not see coming! If you are looking for a fast paced psychological thriller that will keep you invested, you can preorder it now! Thank you to Rita Maxill for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily!.
She Deserved It is one of those books where you settle in and read it in one sitting if you’re lucky. Rita’s style is focused on the narrative and sparse on the adjectives, which allows the story to build momentum. The reader runs into the one big reveal, keeps going, and then hits more of them. If you like your thrillers on the easy, breezy side, visit Belladonna Estates to enjoy this one.
Thank you to the author for providing an early copy for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
This one scratched that popcorn thriller itch I’ve had! This is the perfect unhinged, short, popcorn thriller. It has short chapters, alternating timelines and POV’s. The pacing was fast from beginning to end and the twists at the end threw me for a loop. I had a blast reading this and finished in one sitting. She Deserved It gave me the feeling that I used to get from Freida books.
Wow wait what have I just read!! Another brilliant book by Rita Maxil and I got to be in her ARC team. This book is brilliant the way its written and the short chapters full of twists and suspense. Absolutely 💯 do I recommend this book absolutely YES! If you haven't read any of Rita's books get reading now they are all brilliant x
This is a really good read. I did not expect the ending. That came out of left field. If you like books from Frieda McFadden, you will definately love this book.
What an awesome read. This book kept me wanting more. Read it in 24 hours . So if you want something that will grab you and keep you wondering this is a good choice
Whew guys this book it has you going the first chapter. I love how they are shorter chapters and the multi pov with the mom and daughter.
Constantly you are wondering who in the heck did this! The main character is awesome she is very smart but has had serious bullying issues all through school.
It has you going until the end just not knowing what is happening and I will say I wanted to throw the detective out of the window, but it is ok he came around haha.
📚 ARC Review 📚 Thank you to the author for the advance reader copy! It was a pleasure to read this before release, and as always, my review reflects my honest opinion. In She Deserved It by Rita Maxil, Rachel has spent her life protecting her daughter, Avery, from relentless bullying. Hoping for a fresh start, they move to Belladonna Estates, but when a classmate is found dead, secrets start coming out. This is part of Rita's Belladonna Estates series, but it's a standalone that can be read on its own, with only a couple of references to Belladonna Estates. This story had secrets, drama, and situations that kept me thinking about the characters and their choices. It had more of a domestic thriller mixed with a young adult feel. While it didn't have quite as many twists as I like, it still has plenty to keep thriller fans interested. If you enjoy domestic thrillers with a YA feel, this one deserves a spot on your TBR!
I received an Advance Reader Copy, and these thoughts are my own.
Another fantastic by the author set in the Belladonna Estates. I read it in one day because I just couldn’t put it down. It kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I could definitely relate to Avery as someone who was bullied in school and could also empathize with her mother Rachel and her love for her daughter. As with the first book, I loved the multiple pov and the short chapters set different times throughout the story. I like that this can be read as a stand-alone in the Belladonna verse but I wished we would’ve seen some returning characters. But definitely a fantastic thriller that will keep you guessing the entire time up until the end what actually happened.
There's something about reading a thriller when one of the main characters shares your name!
I enjoyed returning to Belladonna Estates for some more drama! This one had more of a high school focus, with plenty of drama surrounding Avery and her new group of friends. Rachel's love for her daughter was unmatched, and as a parent, I could definitely relate to wanting to protect your child from bullying.
This was a quick, gripping read that I finished in a day! And once I reached the end of Chapter 31?! 🤯
Although this takes place in Belladonna Estates, it definitely works as a standalone. The only connection I noticed to the first book was the setting itself.
Thank you to Rita Maxil for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review!
A quick, fast-paced thriller I finished in one sitting. Where a mother will do ANYTHING to save her daughter when her daughter becomes the main suspect. The short chapters are the real page-turner which helped me to complete the book in a day. By chapter 15 I stopped noticing the time and stopped only when the book ended .
I couldn't guess the killer until it was revealed, which says a lot about how carefully it's built, its really hard to catch what exactly happened. And the twist is a real one, I didn't see it coming and then there was ANOTHER twist!! I was SHOCKED, the things I didn't notice earlier made sense then.
The opening chapters were a bit slow for me, but I'm glad I stuck with it. If you love thrillers, this one's worth your time <3
This is such a gripping read from the very first chapter and I didn't want to put it down.
Rachel and her daughter Avery have moved to the Belladonna Estate to start afresh. After years of bullying Avery is about to start a new school and when she does she is suddenly friends with the popular girls and living her dream life. Rachel however is suspicious of the girls motives and reluctant to let Avery attend a party with them. When she reluctantly agrees the tragedies which occur leave mother and daughter wishing Avery had stayed at home.
I loved the style of writing in this book. It was short chapters in characters POV. The author delivered on storyline, tension, characters and pure psychological drama.
This book had me in so much of a chokehold I read it in under 24 hours. I am completely invested in all the gossip in Belladonna Estates. In all seriousness, this one taught me so much about complex relationships, naivety, dependence, and even freedom. The story is told from a few points of view. Avery, Avery’s mom Rachel, and Sebastian all get a chance to tell the reader a side. I can tell you one thing, Belladonna Estates is one nosey little town and I’d be right there reading all 500 comments on a post about town gossip with popcorn! I highly suggest this domestic thriller to any reader who enjoys trying to figure out who did it and being sort of wrong.
I received this as an ARC from the author. This is a story about relationships: mother/daughter, friends, and secrets! Avery and her mom move into the prominent Belladonna Estates as Avery has a scholarship to St. Alden’s Academy. Avery's days of being bullied are turning around. She has a group of friends and is fitting in. Until a high school party goes terribly wrong, and the popular Scarlett dies. The investigation focuses on Avery, and the twists begin. I really enjoyed this. Both character- and plot-driven. This was a quick read in an afternoon, as I had to know what really happened. You will as well!
I was super excited to get an advance reader copy of She Deserved It. My very first ARC read!! I just finished reading this book and thoroughly enjoyed it! I couldn't put it down! A fast paced domestic thriller that takes place in Belladonna Estates. The characters were great, and there were twists and turns that kept me guessing what was going to happen next. There were also some things that surprised me about Scarlett and Avery near the end of the story! I can't wait for the next book in the Belladonna Estates world!
I absolutely loved getting the opportunity to read this book as an ARC! From beginning to end, it had me hooked. It was fast-paced, full of moments that kept me guessing, and had me on the edge of my seat wanting to know what would happen next. I found myself wanting to keep turning the pages and never wanting to put it down! Such a great read, and one I would definitely recommend. If this one isn’t already on your TBR, be sure to add it when it releases! You won’t want to miss it! 📚❤️ Rita Maxil is doing big things!!
I received an ARC of She Deserved It by Rita Maxil, and I am so thankful for it. This is my honest review.
The story is of a mom who just wants her daughter to have a fresh start at a new school her senior year. But when the popular crowd invites her to a party, and the most loved girl ends up dead, she's the number one suspect.
This was such a good, quick read. I was hooked throughout the entire book. I never saw the twist coming. Definitely worth the read.
This is a first by this author, Rita Maxil, but it won’t be my last! I liked how the chapters switched whose point of view it was as well as when the chapter was taking place. It was all clearly marked so there was never any confusion.
The chapters were on the shorter side which I liked. It wasn’t until about half way through when I had a no freaken way moment! And then I couldn’t put the book down 🤣
Thank you Rita Maxil for having me on your ARC team!
This was a great story. The crazy family dynamics up against a teenage daughter starting in a new school after being bullied, made this a wonderful domestic thriller. From the start it was tough to put down. You were routing for Avery in her new situation. You had to get behind Rachel's love for her daughter. The Belladonna Estates series has kept me hooked and wanting the next new story immediately.
Overall, this was a pretty good book! I just wish there had been more suspense throughout the story. I felt like there was really only one major twist. While the storyline wasn't completely predictable, there were enough little hints along the way that I could figure out what was coming next.
I would have loved a few more unexpected turns to keep me guessing. Despite that, I still enjoyed the book and thought it was a good read!
