What's Left of Us: A Spicy Second-Chance Romance

Rate this book
Five years after her sister Nat ran away from home, Violet Preston abides by a simple set of rules. Don’t search for Nat. Don’t dwell on the past. And most importantly, don’t ever forgive Atlas Blake.

The boy next door. The boy she once loved. The boy she trusted with a dark secret…only for him to use it against her.

But when Atlas discovers Nat’s unfinished bucket list, he makes Violet an offer she can’t refuse. He’ll pay for her to complete the list, so long as he can do it with her. Desperate for one last connection to her missing sister, Violet agrees.

As suppressed feelings come to the surface, Violet questions whether her rules were truly made to protect her bruised heart…or whether they were simply to punish Atlas for a heartbreak neither of them expected.

With every item crossed off the list, Violet and Atlas face the darkness of their past and tentatively hope for their chance at a future.

I saw that she had another book coming out and leapt at the chance. Ive read 2 others and this one be it contemporary was great. The background for the sisters is relatable and kept me invested. The time jumps from chapter to chapter I find arent always executed well but she definitely did it. The story is engaging and easily devourable. The characters keep you invested in wanting to know what information we were getting next. Im definitely curious to what stories will come next and I'm definitely hoping on getting more from the final 2 we see at the end. Atlas was great and amazing to find out more and more about him and what he felt for Violet. He's definitely a great guy.

If you love a story that shares a troubled past, what its like to grieve when you're not sure of the truth, trauma, a broken heart, first times, and second chances I'd recommend diving into this one.

MUST READ slow burn spicy romance with humor and heart!

Not going to lie I teared up on the last few pages big time! I LOVE the writing style! It's fast paced but slow burn and the switches between the past and present day are just FLAWLESS. I loved every single page and read it in two sittings! The characters are real, relatable, hilarious, and it just all around reads like the perfect heartfelt romance with just the right amount of spice! LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!!!

I DEVOURED this book. I read it in under 24 hours which is very rare for me.
I absolutely love a book that goes between different timelines.
Violet and Atlas were kids when they became next door neighbors who fell in love but then had a falling out after something happened to Violet’s sister and she blamed Atlas for it. Years later she is kinda forced back in contact with Atlas they go on an adventure fulfilling Nat’s bucket list.

I really enjoyed this book! A mix of second-chance romance and a little mystery surrounding Nat’s disappearance. I didn’t want to put it down because I wanted to know what happened to her. I had so many theories, but none of them were right. 🫢

The love story between Violet & Atlas is so cute. He’s been waiting for her since they were kids, and he knows her better than anyone. I really liked how well he understands her and the way he treats her. 🫶🏻

This is the second book by Bree Wilde that I’ve read, and I can see how much her writing is improving. She has so much potential, and I can’t wait to read her next book(s)! 💛

Childhood sweethearts, second chances and a whole lot of drama - this is What’s Left of Us.

When Violet’s ex-boyfriend Atlas reappears in her life, she can’t handle it. It’s his fault her sister ran away five years ago, destroying her family. She can never forgive him.

But Atlas has one of her sister Natalie’s famous bucket lists and a proposal - he’ll fund the completion of the list if he can be involved. Against her better judgement, Violet agrees. Time will only tell if this is a good idea, or if she’s about to get her heart broken again.

This contemporary romance was a really beautiful, emotional read. Told over two timelines, we have to slowly piece together the past. It is a story of a family breaking down, and a couple being pieced back together.

The romance is slow burn and beautifully tender with open door spice. There are some hard topics in this book and it will not be for everyone. It includes drug use, family breakdown, abusive parent/husband, inappropriate relationship between a child and adult (not main character), and a runaway sister.

This was a really beautiful read and I cannot wait to see where this series goes next. If you want a heartfelt contemporary romance, you absolutely must add What’s Left of Us to your TBR.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I wasn’t sure what to expect but having read all of Bree’s other books I was sure that I would like it.

Gobbled this one up in ONE sitting! It was a nice breakaway from the Fantasy chokehold that I was in and so very well written.

Sometimes books that time hop can be confusing and take away from the flow of the story but the way that it was managed in this book really helped to the story to build and unfold.

I loved the way that we slowly dug into Violets character and that there was the self awareness of how she was behaving.

Atlas…… my heart! Aside from the swoon worthy physical description he really epitomises ‘the boy next door’ but it felt honest, heartfelt and organic not at all contrived!

It was a beautiful story and the only thing that I would have liked more is to get into the other character backstories that were hinted and maybe a POV from the mums perspective would have been interesting.

Really enjoyed this one, definitely recommend and will be back for more contemporary fiction from Bree ❤️

My girl Bree has a new book out, and I’m so excited for her and her debut ROMANCE novella!

Tropes:
🎶 Neighbors to Lovers to Enemies
🎶 Second Chance
🎶 Childhood Best Friends
🎶 Bucket List
🎶 Forced Proximity

Violet and Atlas met as kids when he moved in next door. They slowly became friends as her older sister became friends with his sister, and eventually became more. But now Nat is gone, Violet hates Atlas, and she sits in the memories and what ifs of the past. Everything changes when Atlas transfers to Violet’s school with Nat’s last bucket list in hand, offering to do it with her.

I really loved how Bree held us in suspense of what happened to Nat and why Violet hates Atlas so much when you get the feelings with peeks into the past that they seem perfect for each other. I really enjoyed the bucket list, and the chance it gave them to talk their past out, as well as starting to heal with all they went through. I loved the ending and I was hoping what happened would. I wouldn’t call this a dark romance, but it does have dark themes, so check the trigger warnings 🩷

🌶️🌶️

Thank you, Bree, for sending me a copy of this book! I can’t wait to see what’s next for you!

What’s Left of Us by Bree Wilde

Oh man. This had me in tears. The rawness and the realness of the characters and the story just really resonated with me.

Thank you to the author for the eARC of this via BookSirens.

So much is packed into this book. Heartbreak and healing. There are some heavy topics in this but Bree really handles them with such care and in such a way that seems so real. It really felt like this was a nonfiction book and not a fiction story because these characters just felt like they were jumping off the page.

I really enjoyed that we get Violet now and then in the past. I felt like we can see how she is growing and struggling with everything going on in her life and how it has impacted her now. Everything just felt so believable which I think made me love this book even more. It wasn’t an over the top romance, it didn’t have perfect characters, and it didn’t have your average HEA.

Can’t believe this is the authors first contemporary romance book!

I have loved previous books from Bree Wilde and was so excited to read a different genre by her! I love how raw this story is, nothing seems sugarcoated, whether it's the grief Violet holds onto or the stubborn points of view of both Atlas and Violet. This story was dark in some parts but also a story of healing and letting go of the past so you can have peace.

The flashback chapters are really what kept me invested in the romance between Atlas and Violet. They also really helped showcase exactly what Violet was going through and even a bit of Nat's thought process. I must admit that I did find her dying her hair blue just to spite other people kind of hilarious though.

I loved how Atlas held on to the bucket list for so long and was determined to help Violet complete it. I believe this helped bring some peace and closure to Violet. It took me awhile to warm up to him, being unsure of exactly what he did, but in the end you can really see they were meant to be together.

Thank you Bree Wilde for the opportunity to Arc read this!

Contemporary romance isn't normally my go-to genre, but the premise of this book seemed interesting enough to pull me in and I’m so glad it did!
Written in first-person POV, the story features a compelling lead. I completely related to Violet in the beginning; her attitude is exactly me on my grumpy days! However, as the story progressed, I realized how deeply broken and immature she was, having never truly moved past her sister's disappearance. Seeing her growth throughout the book was a journey, but she completely redeemed herself in my eyes by the end.
The writing is fantastic, and I loved the back-and-forth timeline that gave us glimpses into Violet’s past. The suspense surrounding what actually happened back then was absolutely killing me! I was practically yelling, "What the heck happened, tell me already!"
In the end, it wrapped up so sweetly and provided total closure, not just for the characters, but for the reader as well. A solid 4-star read!

I was lucky enough to be chosen as an ARC reader for this book. This is Bree Wilde's 4th book and a departure from her other books as they were romantasy while this is a contemporary romance with the backdrop of a bit of a mystery - at least for the reader as we are trying to piece together the past relationship Violet and Atlas and what happened to Violet's sister. As the story goes along we are given flashbacks to the past as the main characters become friends and then a couple and Violet's relationship with her sister heads down a dark path. I could not stop turning the pages, dying to learn how to characters with so much going for them ended up estranged in the present and then watching as Violet softened toward Atlas as they reconnected. Eventually we get the full story and I don't want to say too much about the ending, but I will say it was very satisfying!

Ah, the boy next door. Second chance romance. A big mystery as to why they broke up in the first place?

Lemme just sit right down and devour this book.

I loved the chemistry, the banter, and the deep history between Atlas and Violet. Getting to go through their love story bit by bit to see how they got to where they were as 21-year-olds, in college, with all this baggage - and it is a month-long intercontinental travel worth of baggage - was a delightful journey to go on together.

The reveal of why they broke up and the clarity around why they both act how they do as adults just broke my heart for them. This story was just so ... wow.

I loved this. Truly. It made me so sad and then it made me so happy. Just beautifully done.

It was a deep and emotional read.
Violet and Atlas story is one of those stories that leaves you with a little scar into your heart. It speaks of love, addiction, wrong choices, damage and second chances that arrives only after you had the courage to recognise and accept your mistakes and you are able to forgive yourself for the choices you have made. And Vi, had to do just that in order to start living again and not punishing everyone around her and herself in the first place.
What can I say about Atlas? He created the path to put himself right back into Vi's life and he did that with patience, love and acceptance about her letting go of the past and forgive herself. It was beautiful to read about their story.
And that ending?? It was beautiful and a little bit to short. It leaves you with hope for the future and what's to come.

Thank you BookSirens and Bree Wilde for the opportunity to read this eARC. The following review and thoughts are my own:

I have enjoyed everything Bree Wilde has written so far, so when I saw What's Left Of Us available to request on BookSirens, I jumped at the chance to read it.

What's Left of Us is a cute contemporary romance where girl falls in love with her childhood best friend neighbor. The story picks up six years later after a period of separation due to a betrayal. The pair rekindle and experience some healing along the way.

At only 225 pages, this reads more like a novella. I wanted a bit more development and angst before Atlas and Violet get back together. The story did keep me interested and I found Atlas to be very sweet and the perfect compliment to Violet.

If you are in for a quick, easy read - this is for you!

ARC COPY official review:

This book was so good! Full of second chances, misunderstandings, grief, love, and learning how to trust again. Atlas was just a dreamboat, waiting for Violet for so long, believing in the power of their love! Violet was so relatable as a character in the struggles she went through, but also the way she found her breakthrough! It took so much strength for her to forgive not just Atlas but herself. I loved the other component of lost family and the grief that comes from that! The only complaint I have is that I wanted MORE of them! I wanted to see their entire relationship and everything they go through after the end. I hope she writes more so I can keep falling for Atlas and Violet over and over again!

Bree Wilde has proven she can write in any genre and produce a five-star book! This story includes hard topics like domestic abuse, addiction, and loss. The story is told from the perspective of Violet, the FMC, both as a minor witnessing it all but unable to stop it and as an adult, reflecting on how it affected her life and relationships. I could feel all Violet's emotions as I was reading. The helplessness, the anger, and the sadness. I was so invested in figuring out what Atlas did, and I was so wrong in my theory, but love how it all came together in the end. This story broke my heart, but then put it back together again.

I love Bree Wilde's book and this one is a particular favorites of hers. The main character in this one is such a breath of fresh air; she's flawed, often angry and sometimes emotionally messy and I love her for it XD. Also I love how there is a childhood storyline woven throughout the book because it adds so much tenderness and depth to the eventual romance.

I also enjoyed how the love interest has his own struggles and flaws. Both characters grow and change and help each other throughout the story. There is a deeper storyline throughout about sisterhood and forgiveness, and a romance that written in a way that feels genuine, messy and beautiful. Highly recommend this one!

So happy I got the opportunity to do an ARC for Bree!

This book will have you staying up late and promising yourself one more chapter! I loved the pure emotion from Violet and the back and forth (then and now) timelines. If you’re looking for a quick read that takes you on an emotional roller coaster (in the best kind of way), then this is your book. Can’t wait for everyone to get their hands on this.

My only wish was that there was a little more story building fluff as some things seemed like a quick transition.

I have read everything Bree Wilde has written and will continue!!

This is her first venture into contemporary romance.

Altas and Violet were childhood friends who grew into much more. I loved the honesty of childhood moments that affected both characters. Life pulls them back together and forces Violet to face some truths.

Violet didn't have the best time growing up, and these moments are dealt are handled with care.

There are some heavy topics handled with care, but check the TWs.

I loved this book! There was so much emotion and trauma, I cried through so much of it and still loved it. I have been having a hard time getting through some books lately and this sparked my desire to read. This emotion driven book is the story of Violet and her sister Nat. It includes love, lust, anger, and pain. It is filled with damaging emotion that tears you up and you keep going back for more. There are very few authors that I would stay up all night and read just to finish time book, this is one of those books for me. I can’t wait to read more by Bree Wilde!

I already love the mfc right from the start … she dyes her hair blue… relatable much 👀. Very addictive read, just hooks you straight from the start, why was she no longer with her boy next door, you just had to keep reading to find out what had happened. Was so invested in the characters. Just a proper feel good easy read, would be a good palate cleanser. As I’ve only read romantasy by this author before I wasn’t sure what to expect. But she blew it out of the park!

What a story. Second chances, childhood friends, a past that won't leave you behind, unfinished bucket list, finding a way to forgiveness. These story had me hooked since page one, from the time we first meet then to how the story develop. We have Violet and Atlas, this two become friends at kids and even after growing up no time can erase what they had. When I tell you I laugh, I was angry, I was happy, I was crying! The ending? The only one I could imagine for them! Love this so so much !

[ ARC REVIEW ]

Omg, that was so amazing and so sad! I love the childhood lovers trope, this was so heartbreaking.

Sometimes things happen that cannot change, but we just can move forward and try our best to do better.

This was such a great book to show that even though time was lost, things are still repairable. I was so glad to follow Violet’s and Atlas’s journey together!!

ARC review thanks to the author and Booksirens

Fabulous debut at contemporary by Bree Wilde!

The title really suits the story ❤️ First person POV, best friends, second chance... a story about true love, forgiveness, and familiar drama.

I normally don't read a lot of contemporary romance/fiction but this keeps me reading until I finished! And I love how Bree writes, so I would like to read more books like this one from her.

I read this second change contemporary romance pretty fast! The story line is very easy to follow and the back stories provided much needed context on Violet and Atlas. It was interesting to see how they each grew up and struggled with different aspects of the same situations. I adored the ending of this book and was happy that wasn’t left open-ended.

Thank you BookSirens and Bree for the ARC of What’s Left of Us!

Bree Wilde may still be a fairly new author known for her Echo Realm romantasy series (absolutely incredible!), but she totally delivered on her very first contemporary romance! Second chance romance isn't typically my favorite genre, but her storytelling made me see it with fresh eyes, and I am so glad I gave this book a read! What’s Left of Us gives everything you could want in a spicy adult romance: love, heartbreak, and healing. Everyone should start reading this today—you will not want to put it down!

This hit something feel within me.

What's Left Of Us is a heartbreaking story of a second chance love with the boy next door, based off unknown grief where you don't know if someone you love is missing or no longer living.

Violet and Atlas are beautiful characters, trying to fix their broken pieces.

To Bree- thank you for sending me another ARC. This book did not disappoint.

What’s Left of Us is Bree’s first contemporary lit book. The emotional complexity of the characters was so well done. Atlas and Violet’s story will break your heart, and then have you feeling all of the things. Without spoiling the story, this is a must read.

I absolutely love this author. This book is so different from everything else she’s done. It was darker and more emotional. I caught myself crying at the end - tears of happiness and solidarity. It’s so cute! I typically don’t like second chance romances but this one is *chefs kiss*
