The long journey from Iceland cost Ulfrik Ormsson everything. His one solace is the promise of revenge and a chance to reclaim what had once been his. Yet Frankia has changed in his absence. The Northmen are in retreat and their leadership is fractured. Former allies have sold themselves to the Franks, and Ulfrik finds no safe place to rest his sword.
A jarl no more and long believed dead, Ulfrik confronts a hostile land with no friends. The Franks conquered his former territories and scattered his people. His wife has remarried and his sons are grown. He cannot return to them in shame and poverty, but after a violent clash with bandits he desperately needs aid.
He returns to Hrolf the Strider and discovers his former jarl has need of a man returned from the dead. With a promise of fabulous rewards, he dispatches Ulfrik to infiltrate an army of Northmen sell-swords. His life depends upon secrecy but soon old enemies are dogging his trail. Ulfrik is locked in a life-or-death struggle against foes old and new, and the future of Normandy depends on his success.
I will continue to read and finish this series but I must say I have never seen so many typo errors in writing, in these six books. It seems like there is a mistake of some kind on every page. The proof reader for these books needs to have eyes checked and given glasses to wear. So very distracting to read because of all the typo's. Well that's it with 78% left in this book I just can't go on anymore this last error in writing has put me over the edge I only hope that the author reads this review and reprimands his proof readers.....
Ulfrick is back in Frankia but not reunited with his long lost family yet. His silly little Norse mind believed he cannot return to them until he restores his honor and more importantly his wealth. To those ends he re-swears his loyalty to Hrolf the Strider and goes on a little spy mission.
I just love these books. After the last installment I really have no choice but love Ulfrick and want never to be parted from him. It's like we are bound through our shared hardship however he does all the work and I just lie in bed.
If you're a fan of Viking Historical Fiction then YOU MUST READ THIS SERIES!
I have read all of the stories is the stories in this series up to this one and each 1 has been outstanding. Mr. Auteri is a master storyteller who I am definitely going to read all of his books and I'm enjoying The information information about the North man. They're culture was definitely a violent one that prided themselves on killing opponents and raiding other people for their valuables. While at the same time holding their honor as Paramount in their lives. [Ie: oath giving and oath breaking].
I love men of honor that live by a code. Noble is a aphrodisiac for me. The Viking world represented in this saga, employ these characteristics. The battle scenes were exciting, intrigue and betrayal moved the story in unexpected turns. I recommend this series to anyone who feels the same.
After the amazing survival of Ulfrick in The Storm Gods Gift, we are given a more straightforward tale than the previous story. As always an interesting puzzle of how will this end occurs. But after 5 books it is now a little more formula than surprise. But a fun read nonetheless. And again a good submersion into a tumultuous time period.
Great storytelling, and character development. My only suggestion would be a quick read through to edit some tenses and spelling/transpositions. This would prevent the minor distractions from the flow that often ensue.
Ulfrik's re th run to France and his discovery of those who tried to ruin his life provides an interesting twist to the plot. As usual the characters and descriptions are well-written.
