It was probably inevitable that Ferrars would tackle the subject of identical twins. Are not her best works about the persona beneath the mask that we all wear? Newly-wed Anne is shocked to find out that her new husband Peter has an identical twin he's never met, since he was adopted at birth. But there's so much Anne doesn't know about Peter. She didn't even realize that he had a former fiancee living not far from his mother's house, where they're heading when Peter meets Tom.
