"Δεν θα ζήσω ανάμεσά σας»" λέει η Άμπιγκεϊλ Μπιούελ, όταν την αποσπούν από την τετράχρονη αιχμαλωσία της και τη ζωή της με τους Ινδιάνους και την επιστρέφουν παρά τη θέλησή της στον "πολιτισμό", ένα στρατόπεδο στη μέση του πουθενά. Βρισκόμαστε στην αμερικανική Δύση, την επαύριο του εμφυλίου πολέμου Βορείων και Νοτίων, στο προκεχωρημένο οχυρό 2881. Μάταια οι στρατιώτες περιμένουν την αποστράτευσή τους. Φαίνεται να έχουν ξεχαστεί από τη στρατιωτική διοίκηση, από την ιστορία, από τους πάντες. Η απομόνωση, η πείνα, οι αρρώστιες, ένας ουρανός που αναδίδει τη μυρωδιά του θανάτου θα έχουν ολέθριες επιπτώσεις στο μυαλό και το σώμα τους. Ο Κάτερ, μελαγχολικός και βασανισμένος προσπαθεί να διατηρήσει όσο γίνεται την τάξη και την ανθρωπιά στο στράτευμά του, και να μη χάσει τα λογικά του.

Η Άμπιγκεϊλ δεν θα μιλήσει ξανά. Παραμένει απόμερα, καταριέται μυστικά το παιδί που έχει στα σπλάχνα της και βρίσκει καταφύγιο σ’ αυτό το παράξενο γαλάζιο άλογο που δεν την εγκαταλείπει ποτέ. Τροφή δέχεται μόνο από τα χέρια του μοναδικού μαύρου άντρα του οχυρού. Ποια είναι η Άμπιγκεϊλ Μπιούελ; Τι έχουν να διηγηθούν τα σαστισμένα μάτια της, τα ουρλιαχτά της μέσα στη νύχτα; Είναι μέρος αυτού του κόσμου ή έχει γίνει μια "άγρια"; Μήπως είναι κάποιο κακό πνεύμα που στοιχειώνει το οχυρό; Γεννάει ολομόναχη και κουβαλά στην αγκαλιά της το κάτισχνο μωρό της. Η επίδραση που ασκεί, καταχθόνια και λυτρωτική συνάμα, απειλεί να βυθίσει το στρατόπεδο στο χάος.

Ο Κάτερ δεν ξέρει πώς μπορεί να επικοινωνήσει μαζί της. Πώς να θεωρήσει ότι η γυναίκα επέστρεψε στον πολιτισμό, έναν πολιτισμό όμως που ταυτίζεται μ’ αυτό το ερημωμένο και καταραμένο μέρος; Μήπως και παρά τα όσα υπέφερε, ένιωσε ένα είδος λύτρωσης ανάμεσα στους αγρίους; Ποιος θα ορίσει τα σύνορα ανάμεσα στη βαρβαρότητα και τον πολιτισμό, τον αποικισμό και την άγρια φύση, τη ζωή και τον θάνατο; Κι αν τα ορίσει, ποιος θα τολμήσει να τα φυλάξει;

Melanie Wallace was born and raised in Manchester, New Hampshire, and now lives with her husband in Myloi, an agrarian village below the Ohi mountain range in Greece, and in Paris.

Wallace's novel "The Housekeeper" was longlisted for the 2007 Orange Prize.

Δε θα πω πολλά! Θα πω μόνο τρέξτε να το πάρετε! ΕΠΙΚΟ! Το καλύτερο ανάγνωσμα του ‘22 μέχρι στιγμής. Σου σκίζει την ψυχή…άγριο, σκληρό… σου ραγίζει την καρδιά … οι περιγραφές κ οι αφηγήσεις σε κάνουν να δακρύζεις, να φωνάζεις, να αγανακτείς… πολλές φορές κατά την ανάγνωση φώναξα λέγοντας «όχι» , «μη». Είχα μια έκφραση αηδίας, πόνου, θυμού, στενοχώριας.

Αυτό το βιβλίο θα σας ξεσκίσει την καρδιά και την ψυχή!

This book is truly AMAZING! I was totally hooked and couldn't put the book down. The story is heart rending, but wonderful. The imagery the author puts in your head is amazing...sometimes amazingly beautiful, and sometimes amazingly sad...but still amazing! Beautiful book! I will definitely be reading this one again!

Brutal, but moving. I don't even know what to say about this book. It was beautiful, stark, heart-wrenching. I have a thing for Indian captive stories, but not the bodice-ripper trash that is so prevalent. The stories where the captives wanted to remain with the tribes who stole them and were incorporated into the Native culture. The story of Abigail Buwell, the "redeemed" captive, and Major Cutter parallel eachother in tragic ways.

Brilliant! My kind of story...my kind of writer, that is story-teller. Read it...if not for anything else (and there are, indeed, lots of reasons), read it for the perfect description of a unique bond between a woman and a horse.

Blue Horse Dreaming of the most touching and restrained novels I have ever read. I can honestly think of no other book that compares. It skips back and forth across time, from first person to third, from one culture to another. By turns it’s astonishing, heart-rending, pitiable, depressing, uplifting, sad, and sorrowful. Be patient with this book - it will reward you.

Ίσως οι μεγαλύτερες γενοκτονίες είναι αυτές που έτυχε απλά να μην γίνουν σε λευκούς και γείτονες.
Κάπου στις ατελείωτες εκτάσεις της Αμερικής υπάρχει ένα φυλάκιο ξεχασμένο από το θεό.
Ένα φυλάκιο που ο σιδηρόδρομος το κατέστησε άχρηστο και η πρόοδος του επιφυλάσσει την ίδια τύχη που θα έχουν και οι αυτόχθονες.
Εκεί ζουν οι "ήρωες" που έχουν αφεθεί σε αυτό που δεν μπορεί να σταματήσει κανείς.
Το χρόνο που τα καταπίνει όλα.
Ένα ωραίο βιβλίο για τα επιτεύγματα της προόδου και την απληστία του λευκού ανθρώπου.

This book has a sad and eerie feel that dogs the footsteps of any pioneer traveller seeking their future across the west of America. It's sense of disenfranchisement from family, it's dereliction and abuse caused by isolation and it's mighty sense of loss by way of brutal confrontation. It's a book which breaths the arid semi dessert with it's haggard entrails of hope clinging to whatever became of the last outpost's sanity. To say the west was won without failure is a fools wish for glory. This book was not so much a survivors tale but it does have its own shade of glory.

Blue Horse Dreaming has an etheral quality to it. Abigail Buwell is saved from the Indians although she doesn't want to be and taken to a lonely fort which does not have enough supplies, is under attack from Indians and has an outbreak of an deadly epidemic.
While this sounds as if it may be exciting, i found that the book had such emptiness to it that it was a listless ride.
It was one of those reads that as much as I wanted I couldn't attach myself to any of the characters.

Incredibly depressing. I generally do not mind traumatic when the story supports it but this was bleak. Some will love it but I just could not wait for it to end so I could return my borrowed copy.
