A Lion's Pride #2

When a Beta Roars

Rate this book
How degrading. Stuck babysitting a woman because his alpha said so. As Pride Beta, he has better things to do with his time, like washing his impressive mane, hunting down thugs for fun, and chasing tail—sometimes his own if his lion is feeling playful.

But his babysitting job takes an unexpected turn when the woman he’s assigned guard duty over turns out to be his mate.

A female threatened by an outside wolf pack.

A woman he wants to call his own.

A mate who doesn’t fall for his charm.

Usually Beta’s leave the roaring to the Pride’s alpha, but in this case given his level of frustration, he might have to make an exception. And if anyone doesn’t like it, they can kiss his furry tail.

I like shifter romance books and I like it when there's a inter-species blend, like lion and wolf in this case, but I have to stop with this series. Not my sort of books, unfortunately :/ Although this book was better than the first one, I must say.

If you want to read something fast-paced and light, this series might look interesting. There a are a lot of funny moments, too.

I got my ROAR...

I listened to the first book in the series and had a chuckle when the narrator very blandly says roar in the roary bits. So, when I started up this little gem, I was curious to see how this narrator would perform it. Well, lo and behold, our narrator this time is a bit of a comedian. He R-O-A-R-S!! Like, full on, growly roars. Seriously, it was FUNNY!!

This story was very funny with a touch of the serious too. The heroine is in danger and running for her life. The hero, while a bit of a joker, takes one look and is instantly smitten. He's got his work cut out for him convincing the she-wolf to take his lion seriously.

Honestly, the narrator was pretty funny. He had this older, gravelly voice. The fact that he's reading a romance story, and the lines he had to perform, he deserved a medal. I can picture him having to take breaks after some of the lines he has to read. I would have paid money to see it.

Good laugh, and again not the worst and not the best paranormal romance reads/listens, but I was still entertained.

Pride Beta Hayder isn't happy being stuck with babysitting duty. He has more important things to do but what the alpha wants, the alpha gets. Turns out, it's the best job he's ever been given when he discovers the curvy little wolf shifter he's to protect is his fated mate. He doesn't care that her former pack is out to get her back. Arabella is his and he'll not stand for anything getting in the way of claiming his female. Arabella and her allergies included!

When A Beta Roars is just as entertaining as When An Alpha Purrs but with a better romance between two really fun characters. Arabella, sister to Jeoff, is coming from an abusive mating and her old pack is after the wealth left to her. Her self-confidence needs a major boosting and thankfully Hayder and his insane pridemates are there to help. Hayder, the big flirt that he is, doesn't mix words when it comes to wanting Arabella. She's his mate and he wants her naked and in his bed. Despite his naughty desires, he gives Arabella the time she needs to heal from her past abusive relationship and helps to convince her she has a kick ass vixen waiting to be let out. The romance builds at the right pace for Arabella, with lots of naughty teasing and sweet moments. I love the romance and believe it's a big improvement over Kira and Arik's insta-lust in book one.

There's lots of over the top antics to laugh at with just enough action and drama to provide story and substance. Arabella is left a fortune from her former jerk of a mate and her packmates want to get their greedy paws on it at any cost. There's a good mix of drama, romance, and silliness to give a reader whatever they're in the mood for. My favorite so far in the series but that may change with Leo's book. The tease at the end has me excited for When An Omega Snaps.

Eve Langlais never fails to make me smile. Her books are funny, sexy and I usually can't put them down until I read the end. She writes books which can get me out of a reading slump. Did this book bend my mind with amazingness? No. Was it cheesy as hell? Yes. But it did make me smile. Like an idiot.

When A Beta Roars is just as entertaining as When An Alpha Purrs but with a better romance between the main characters. Arabella is coming from an abusive mating. After her mate dies (thank god!) Arabella is left a fortune from her former mate and her pack mates want to get their greedy hands on it at any cost. Hayder, despite his naughty desires, gives Arabella the time she needs to heal from her past abusive relationship. The romance has lots of naughty teasing and sweet moments. There’s a good mix of drama, romance, humour and silliness to make it an enjoyable read.

However, my major problem with this series is that each couple so far has had the female with major problems and baggage. The female main characters are wishy washy and weak. For once, I'd like to read where the female doesn't have baggage! This isn’t something I’d rave about, but I’d continue to read it between books for a little smut and humour so I don’t go into a reading slump. It’s neither good nor bad.

The heroine is a wolf shifter, and she just can't figure the hero out. The wolf shifters in this story are almost all total jerks. They are abusive to females, and give females zero respect. The heroine was in a bad marriage to the alpha of her pack, and now is a rich widow. Because of the abuse, her inner wolf is in hiding, and she is always ready to kowtow to the males to avoid their fists. Her bodyguard, the hero, gets annoyed at the kowtowing and totally pushes her to get her to push back and see it is safe.
The female lions are so funny--quite girly, but also ferocious. In a lion pride, females are honored as equals and they give our heroine a good example of standing up for herself and how safe it is to be herself. They really cracked me up.
Her late, un-lamented alpha mate left our heroine a very rich woman, and all the wolves want that money. Her brother, a good wolf shifter, asked the lions to protect her, and that is how she meets her mate.
This story has action and suspense and gender-roll-bending surprises. There is a lot of humor and a bit of sex, too. I strongly recommend.

Review originally posted at RabidReads.com.

Eve Langlais does it again with When a Beta Roars. This book starts pretty much where When an Alpha Purrs ends. The pride Beta has been give the job of babysitting the wolf alpha’s sister who is running from her old pack after leaving an abusive relationship. This is not the job he is looking for, but his alpha insists to help with the alliance between the pride and the pack. That is until he meets the woman he is babysitting. She is his fated mate.

Arabella is being seeked by her old back. Everyone wants to mate with her. Not because they like her, no. They want to mate with her because she inherited the wealth of her jerk of a dead husband and whoever she takes as a mate will also get the title of alpha of the pack. Arabella has been so badly abused by her previous husband, her wolf has abandoned her, she can’t shift.

One thing I loved about this series, the lioness are treated as equals and are valued members of the pride. The women of the pack, this is not the case. The lioness work really hard to help Arabella to get her confidence back. Hayder too wants to see a woman with strength, not cowed.

Even with the tough topics of abuse, there is still the humor that I’ve come to associate with Eve Langlais. Things like a wolf being allergic to a lion. The lionesses continue to be the biggest comic relief in the series. Lastly, Leo, the Omega and enforcer, is a great character. I can’t wait to get to his story. I once again highly recommend this story for people who enjoy shifter stories with a lot of laughter. This can be read as a stand alone, even though it is part of the series.

I’ve been putting this one off after the relative disappointment that was When an Alpha Purrs. I just couldn’t handle the relative disappointment. But I shouldn’t have been worried. This story was freaking adorable.

Bear with me, I am going to be doing a bunch of comparing to the previous book in the series. It was just such a 180 change. Arabella didn’t start out feisty and then devolve into a wishy-washy dish rag of a heroine. She started out a cringing mess as the result of past abuse and being on the run from her previous pack but came out of her shell with a vengeance. And Hayder, rather than being the obnoxious alpha trying to smack her back, reveled in every bit of it determined to help her let her wild side loose. And there was virtually no navel gazing, Plus, since they are both shifters, there was none of that awkward finding out and dealing with it mess. ANd, the lionesses of the pride really shine in this book.

Basically it was a cute, sweet story, with enough madness and mayhem thrown in to make it entertaining. And Arabella gets her own back against her former pack, and then some. It was purely a joy to read.

I’m truly looking forward now to the giant liger Beta’s story.

Ok this one has more action than the previous book some it deals with two different types of shifters so basically it turned into sort of animal politics XD

- The hero since the beginning was funny and sarcastic and in here he was arrogant about his looks and such and ppl would think as expect of a lion XD

- The heroine was a widow wolf shifter, really her previous life sucked big time with her asshole of an dead ex, and I can't believe even after his death the dude was mean enough to cause her more harm from the grave

- Anyway the attraction and chemistry between them were palpable and it was funny to read

- And the whole thing that happened to the hero and heroine after she was taken made me think seriously?

- I loved the ending everyone should fear the wrath of the females Mwahahaha xD

Overall, *thumbs up*

Another 5 Stars for Eve Langlais’s When a Beta Roars. I probably enjoyed this book a little more than the first book in the series. The first book was more about the banter and sex while this book is more about nurturing a developing relationship with a little more plot and action thrown in. Hayder is an arrogant lion but at the same time is very supportive of Arabella. Throughout the book, Hayder somehow remains his alpha self while still being able to help Arabella build up her broken self-esteem. Although Arabella is broken, some of her backbone remains and she uses it to fight Hayder. The banter between the hero and heroine is funny from beginning to end. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a light and entertaining romantic paranormal comedy.

Loved This Book

When lions fall the Earth shakes and the sky roars. Or maybe that was Hayder roaring. Just goes to show, the arrogant lion shifter has a heart of gold. The way he dealt with his damaged mate to bring her back dignity and confidence was, sigh .... I don't even have the words to describe how I feel. This book was so good!

*****5 awesome starts *****
I loved this book and it made me laugh from the start which was pretty good...
description
This was me at the start of the book and when I finished it, well what can I say, it was pretty damn good...
First of all the cover of this book was hooooootttttt.... Loved it
description
My favorite part of the book was when Hayder found out that his mate was allergic to him, that moment was just epic, it was an amazing moment and I did feel sorry for him though, but still funny...
He took a step toward her, and her nose tickled. She tried to hold it in, she did, but he kept getting closer, all the while hammering her for an answer so she finally blurted it out, “I’m allergic to cats.”

That stopped him dead. His eyes widened, and not just because of her reply.

Achoo! And yeah, this time, while she didn’t fire a gun, she might have done something worse. She sneezed on him.

She’s allergic to me!

If he’d thought himself stunned at the realization that the trembling woman was probably his mate, then it was nothing compared to his disbelief that fate thought it would be funny to pair him with someone who couldn’t get near him without going into a sneezing fit.

Bless him, it was really funny, cute and i felt sorry for him as well...
description
But then it was adorable how he wanted to spend time with her even though she was allergic to him, he thought it will wear off in the long run which was utterly adorable
Then his possessiveness
While she didn’t elucidate what her old pack might do to get her back, Hayder had a general idea. “So we can expect them to come sniffing.”

“More than sniffing. They will get rough.”

He couldn’t help a wide smile. “Really? You think they’ll come poking around? Awesome.”

“What do you mean awesome?”

“Awesome because we’re a rough crowd too, especially the ladies in the pride. We also need plenty of exercise. Your old pack might think they can strong-arm or threaten us into giving you back, but guess what? That won’t happen. I guarantee it.”

Whether Arabella knew it or not, she was now part of the pride—and his.

And no one touches what’s mine.

description
After that, their first kiss was quite funny and cute at the same time ...
“Is your answer because of your allergies? Because I’m willing to ignore them.”

“My allergies are a good reason, but not the biggest one. Getting involved with me is too dangerous and—” Forget finishing that sentence.

Hayder moved too fast for her to stop him, especially considering he did the unexpected. He shut her up with a kiss!

A fist or a slap, even a kick, with those she’d come to recognize the warning signs and knew how to brace against them. But Hayder showed no sign of his intentions, unless the intensity in his amber eyes meant something. Around the leather bench he slid, as if it were buttered, until he invaded her space and claimed her next word with his lips.

He silenced her with a kiss. A beautiful, soft, sexy, and sensual kiss. Even more astonishing than the heated pleasure of his touch, she did nothing to stop him.

That was pretty sweet....
Throughout the book he was always there for her and always waited for her but when he just wanted to cuddle her all night... Lets say he might have went too far according to Arabella cuz
As if Hayder would do such a thing. Instead, he pulled back the covers and crawled into bed with her.
Naked!
Forget feigning slumber. “What are you doing?” she squeaked, flinching away from the heated skin that met hers. Not expecting a visitor, she’d gone to bed in a T-shirt and panties, adequate sleep time attire if it hadn’t ridden up during her nightmare and if a very naked man hadn’t thought to invade her space.
“I’m cuddling,” he announced, not letting her escape. His arm snaked around her and drew her back into the scorching warmth of his body.
Much as she enjoyed it, she knew she couldn’t allow it. “Where are your clothes?”
“In the other room.”
“But why?” she sputtered.
“Oh come on, baby. Because I can’t sleep in them of course.”
“You were sleeping in the other room?” Where? The couch certainly wasn’t long enough for his tall frame.
“Well duh. How else am I supposed to guard you?”
Of course he’d only remained out of duty, but it didn’t explain his presence in her bedroom. “How did you get in here? I know I locked the bedroom door.”
“Yeah, about that, I can’t believe you locked me out!” He seemed more than a little offended.
The cracked doorjamb showed that hadn’t proven much of an obstacle. “That didn’t stop you I see.”
“Only because I heard you crying. Bad dreams?”
Understatement. “You could say.”
“Do you get them often?”
“Only since I escaped.” Apparently, a fear of capture led to her reliving her last failed escape.
“Poor baby.” He rumbled as he rubbed his cheek against her hair.
To Arabella’s surprise, she didn’t sneeze. Probably because of the triple antihistamine dose she’d taken before bed.
“I’m all right now. You can leave.” Before she did something foolish that she would regret, like rub back.
He hugged her closer. “I’m not going anywhere.”
“But…” What she meant to say got lost and forgotten as his lips brushed her nape.
A full-body shiver rocked her.
“But what, baby?”
What indeed? She tried to focus her thoughts. This was wrong—even if it felt right. “You shouldn’t be here.” He shouldn’t be here naked and tempting her to do things she needed to abstain from. Things like wiggling her bottom closer to him, closer to the hard press of his arousal that triggered an answering wet heat in her sex. Things like turning around to face him so she could kiss him and recapture the insane passion of before.
So many things she wanted to do. So many reasons not to. “I’m fine now. You can return to the couch or floor or wherever you were sleeping.” Naked. She really needed to stop obsessing about that.
“No.”
“What do you mean no?” It only belatedly occurred to her that she wasn’t acting meek or placating him. She was questioning and demanding. And he wasn’t yelling or hitting. Instead, he was…nuzzling.
“No, as in I won’t leave you not now, probably not ever. You know, you’re really cuddly.” He squeezed her. “And you smell delicious.” He nosed her hair, his warm breath in and out provoking a shiver, the kind that shook her whole body and ended between her legs.
She tried to make sense of his words, even as he sought to steal all rational thought from her with his soft caresses. She managed to mutter, “I’m not ready for this. For you. It’s too soon. Too much.” Hayder overwhelmed her with not just arousal. He seemed to promise a future, one that, if real, she wanted. He offered her protection, the kind that would keep the pain away. He also encouraged her to be herself, to stand up for herself.
And part of standing up for herself was not letting him dictate—even if his dick proved tempting—when and how he’d get to sleep in her bed, with her.
She thought of giving him another warning. But no, she’d asked him twice. He’d refused to listen. He’d also told her to trust him.
Dared she test him?
Better now than later.
Before she changed her mind, she rolled in his arms. Lashes fluttered as she let her gaze meet his, the faint illumination from the night light in the bathroom letting her see his expression—a nightlight because she couldn’t bear the dark.
She let her hands rest on the slightly furry chest. Breathing halted at the electric feel of his taut flesh under her fingertips.
Perhaps I’m being hasty. Maybe having him in bed isn’t a bad thing?
His lips drew close as he whispered, “Oh, baby. I knew you’d come around.”
He did, did he? That only strengthened her resolve. She murmured back, “I said no.”
And then she shoved.
She shoved me out of the bed!

that part was hilarious, too good

This one had a clever plot twist. She was allergic to him and sneezed every time he got near to her.
I liked how that was solved.

Oh my! Eve Langlais has done it again with When A Beta Roars. This second entry into the A Lion's Pride had me laughing from the very beginning. Hayder is quite the hoot and quite the ladies’ man. He's unfortunately tasked with babysitting a woman, which he thinks is way below his lofty Beta status. Arabella is a widowed wolf. Abused and beaten down by her previous mate, suddenly she a hot commodity by the members of her pack. Maybe it has something to do with her now being rich, and whoever gets her not only gets to be Alpha but they get her buckets of money as well. A wolf and a lion as mates is a pretty funny thought but when you throw into the mix that she's allergic to cats, HILARIOUS! Poor Hayder, she's sneezing all over him all the time. *Snickers!* However, he's willing to put up with it and all her timidness because with one look he knew his bachelor and catting around days were over. Instant mate connection!

Between all her sneezing and constant threat of being snatched away by greedy wolves, there's a entertaining story. Big mighty Beta, the whipped wolf and how they change each other. She learns to be stronger, standing up for herself and him...okay all he really does is put his catting days behind him. They have a few escapades along the way (dinner, kidnapping, allergies) while Hayder proves he's quite the gentleman (Purr! Oh wait, lions don't purr!) as he's willing to wait for Arabella to decide she wants him. That translates into not a whole lot of sex in this one. *Sad meow* However, they do get on to the dirty deed and when they do, it's delicious! And the HEA...RAWR!!

The best part of any story is the characters and once again I got to experience the lionesses in the pride which provide some of the funniest moments for me. They sure know how to keep the males in their place. That is all but one; Leo the Omega. He's actually turned out to be my favorite character in the series and I can't begin to tell you how happy I am to see he gets his own book. Happy meow!

Whenever I read a sad book that turns me into an emotional wreck, I know I can always turn to one of Eve Langlais' books to perk me right up. Her stories always get me laughing and have the funniest characters. The situations they find themselves in always leave me smiling. Anyone wanting something light and entertaining to read, needs to get When a Beta Roars.

I received this book from the JeepDiva for the express purposes of an honest review. The opinions and rating of this review are solely mine and in no way was I compensated.

This book cracked me up. I loved the concept of this story. A wolf shifter having allergies and being allergic to her new found mate who is a lion. What a concept. Just thinking about it makes me smile.

I have not read book 1 of this series yet but I am going to go back and read it next. Even though this is part of a series it can be read as a stand alone. This is written as a multi pov.

I loved the characters in this book. They are all written so well, the story concept was fantastic and easy to follow and the dialogue between the characters was entertaining and well written. The descriptions to detail were written where it was easy to visualize but not over done where the story was bogged down.

There was action, suspense, intrigue, no real romance (as in hearts and flowers) but Hayder did have to try to win Arabella's heart and trust. He did that by fighting for her and wanting her to stand up for herself and fight him as well. He allowed her freedom that she had been denied for so long and pushed her limits but allowed her to do it in her own time frame.

Can not wait to go back and read number one and then read number 3.

Would I recommend this book? Yes!

Would I read more from this author? Of course!

Let's say 3.5

I'm mostly ok with it. The parts I have a difficult time with are the ones where the h is a battered woman, because while she's somewhat hesitant and/or cautious at times, she's not nearly as cowed as one would expect, given that we see glimpses of her past in the form of her nightmares.

Well, that and the lions keep taking her out in public, assuring her she's safe, and she keeps getting kidnapped. Not sure who to blame for that. I *think* in the first book the Furry United Coalition was mentioned so they're in the same universe. Maybe they should have been contacted. Anyway...

That aside, much of the book is entertaining, though the h's hesitance at letting the H claim her coupled with no-one taking steps to ensure her fortune wasn't up for grabs seemed to be calculated to invite unnecessary conflict. i.e. the only reason other wolves were trying to get their hands on her was because her mate's death left her a rich widow. The H was her true mate (as opposed to someone who just claimed her for the hell of it) and while I can understand her hesitance under the circumstances, SOMEone should have taken steps to put her funds in safekeeping. This, btw, was mentioned in afterthought in the epilogue.

Pride Beta Hayder is not happy about his newest assignment, babysitting a wolf shifter who is in danger. He has other things to do, like tame his mane. However he did not plan for the timid shifter to be his mate, with his black book full Hayder was not ready to settle with his mate. As the mating bond becomes harder to resist Hayder has to convince his lovely mate Arabella that they are meant to be together, even if she is gun shy.

Very fun read. Loved Hayder, he is arrogant and typical cat shifter. Arabella is really sweet but does not hold her temper when it comes to Hayder. Eve Langlais always comes thru with entertaining books, another fantastic read from the talented author.

I found myself laughing when reading this one. I loved how Hayder wouldn't take no for an answer with Arabella, but didn't it in a way that wasn't creepy or mean spirited. Instead he seemed to build her up at every turn, encouraged her to be herself, strong and confident.

Arabella's reaction to the lionesses was great! It gave her a different way to see how women were in a pack/pride situation.

I loved how by the end Arabella stood up for herself and became the person she was meant to be.

Funny, sweet shifter romance i’ve come to expect from Ms. Langlais and just what I needed after a darker, angsty read. I adored Hayder and his patience and protectiveness, I liked Arabella and her journey from abused to powerful. It's a simple shifter story with some humor and insta-love. A good entry in this series and I’m looking forward to the next.

The second book in Eve Langlais' A Lion's Pride series is still outrageously funny, very sexy and sweet with a lion shifter whose fated mate happens to be a wolf shifter. The ribbing from the pride may make Hayder break out in hives but the sweet and delectable Arabella is so worth the trouble for him. Now if he can only get rid of the other stupid canines out to hurt his baby then everything would be fine. Except for the lionesses' heckles. This is still very much a lighthearted and quick read but its guaranteed to entertain and keep readers coming back for more.

Laugh out loud funny! I forgot I preordered this one and then got a nice surprise when I turned on my kindle wireless. I really like the way Langlais tells her story. She has a great mix of humor, plot intensity and romance. I just wish she wrote faster!

If I had to compare her to another author I think I would say her humor is most similar to Shelley laurenston. Both have strong female characters and very odd (but humorous) cast of characters.

Loved it!

Loved this book, so funny! I loved Hayder and Arabella! I was happy to see Hayder encouraging Arabella to reclaim her sass and independence! She needed someone that would support her and build her up again instead of tearing her down like her worthless dead mate did! I loved how he brought her back to the awesome individual she was before she'd been mated to an ass! Her and Hayder were great together! Can't wait for the next book to see how Leo handles Meena declaring herself his mate!

Book 2 in the Lion's Pride series, When A Beta Roars. And boy does Hayder roar. Stuck babysitting Arabella who was in a bad marriage to the alpha of her pack, and now is a rich widow. When Hyder finds out the abuse she had to take from her mate and his fellow pack members Ryder does everything in his power to keep her safe because she is his mate. Really enjoying this series but I love all of Eve's books!

3.5 stars.

I feel like a broken record when I come to Eve Langlais because anything I have read from her has always been sexy and funny, and When a Beta Roars is no exception. I thought there was less sex (not really a complaint), but the funny dialogue and inner monologue, and fun chemistry between Hayder and Arabella made it so I didn't miss it at all. A great read if you are in the mood for fun, light and somewhat silly.

Ahhhhhh thank goodness for Eve Langlais. Even though I thought the first book in this series lacked the humor Ive come to rely on this author for, this one turned that right back around. The H was an adorable idiot, and my but I love those. I felt terrible for the h, but was so happy with the pairing of her and the H. They worked so well together.

This was a sweet but predictable shifter romance. I didn't get a good feel for the hero and heroine and their connection/relationship so I think that's what kept me from really liking this book. It was cute and fast paced but nothing original. I'll still likely read more in this series though.

Fun

What a great story. I loved it. The relationship between the main characters was well done and a terrific ending.
