Sophie Scholl Die Weiße Rose

Rate this book

A terribly sad and tragic story of the price of resistance paid by this young woman, but a good little book for learning to read German at the A2 level. There is a subtle increment in the level of difficulty, vocabulary and syntax and grammar as it proceeds. The Übungen (tasks, exercises) at the end of each chapter can be challenging and require careful reading of the text.

this is another german learning book, & unlike the many that use rather bland fictional stories this one tells the true story of sophie scholl, her brother and friends, and their attempts to speak out against hitler during the war. it also gives a lot of other interesting cultural and factual information, such as the background to youth groups in germany before the two wars, and a brief look at the many groups and individuals that were active against hitler and how the nazi propoganda machine distorted the media to make it appear that there was no opposition. as a foreigner living in germany, it's important for me to learn this history, and if i can learn it at the same time as learning the language then it's even better. the chapters are short and at the end of each there are comprehension and grammar exercises (ok, i haven't done all of them yet ... ) and it comes with a cd to listen to.

I think it was a really good book, although I have not read the Flugblätter. I might not have read it if I didn't have to do so for German class, but it was definitely worth the time and it was a pretty quick read !
