Sick of hiding and not really being hid, Nick chooses to face his fears head on. He travels to Austin to star in a horror convention and walks straight into the Maggots' den.
Menace follows him, fueled with vengeance and hate, but not from a source he'd expect. This time the threat is personal; dangerously so. The past is screaming to be remembered.
*Flypaper: Con is a dark psychological thriller and is the fourth book of the Flypaper series. While it can be read on its own, you may enjoy reading the series in this order: Flypaper Flypaper: Opus Flypaper: Cast Flypaper: Con
3.6 Stars For Series! Since there were 5 books in the Flypaper series so far, I'm doing a review on them as a whole considering they're novellas. The books are just great! Down right eerie and full of unexpected expectations. The books follow Nick Dawkins, a popular horror author who moves to a small town called Forest Downs. He's a lonely guy with only the company of his foul-mouthed, super quirky webmaster, CorpseFlower, who's never met in person, his literary agent, Beatrice, a sweet old couple, a local cop, Sheriff Reed, and his mental insane mother who used to poison him as a child. After living in the area for quite some time, things go down in Forest Down that make the town locals literary want to rip out Nick Dawkins' guts! Yikes. Nick Dawkins becomes what his psycho ex-girlfriend calls "flypaper", drawing his mentally unstable fans, known as Maggots, to the secluded town. Murder and mystery plaque the town as Dawkins' crazed Maggot fans scheme and plot ways to flip Nick's life upside down on their underground fan cite called Miyasis. The Maggot fans collaborate on many terrifying ideas about their favorite author. From eating his brains, wearing his skin as an overcoat, and doing some rather unpleasant things to his manhood? Oh GEEZE! Flypaper is as funny as it is dark and gruesome and is a great read for those cloudy days in bed. Keep the doors locked, and your gun ready, and be careful what you write! You never know who's stalking you in Forest Down and eager to turn your gory, fiction tales into a real-life walking NIGHTMARE!
Pretty good yet again. Still like the premise and the characters. Also was nice to get out of town for a bit. Already onto the next book in the series. This one makes me wonder about Nick's naivete in forgiving people that nearly killed his friend.
My least favorite of the first three. However, the story-telling is great and the name character stays true to his personality. As well does his sidekick. Yet, it is really light on Nick's interaction with the person that is the protagonist. Nick's manager doesn't flit in and then run out in this story. We see more of her throughout this experience at a convention just about Nick.
Another awesome addition to the "Flypaper" series!
Another great addition to this series! Nick Dawkins seems to have an unlimited number of psychologically insane fans who either want to kill him or have a twisted need to impress him as their favorite author. Luckily for him, Dawkins seems to have nine lives! The poor man gets out of the house for the first time in years and heads to "horror con" hoping to have a little fun. What he gets, though, is another long weekend full of shocks and torture.
(I also want to add the fact that I love that CorpseFlower is playing a far larger part at this point in the series. She's my type of girl! :)
This is a dark psychological thriller, and it is definitely not for the squeamish nor the very young. But if you do enjoy this genre, then give the "Flypaper" series a try. I bet you will not be able to put it down once you get started! "Flypaper Con: Book 4" could be read on its own, but I suggest starting from the beginning.
This is an enjoyable fast-paced series and Nick is a dynamic character. My main issue with this book was how a major antagonist suddenly just flipped personality and became a romantic interest. It seemed like too much of a swing in a short time.
