Set on stormy seas during the early nineteenth century, Stowaway: Curse of the Red Pearl features a unique plot revolving around a classic adventure that quickly becomes supernatural horror.
In Stowaway: Curse of the Red Pearl, Kit Cabot is being groomed to take over his family’s shipping fortune in 1808 Boston, Massachusetts. While Kit yearns for the approval of his father, he finds the day-to-day operations of the family business incredibly boring.
Determined to do something more with his life, and attracted to the seafaring life of his uncle, Kit decides to stowaway on his uncle’s ship. But instead of being swept up in the life of adventure and romance he always imagined, Kit finds himself subjected to harsh 1800’s maritime conditions and another stowaway with a sinister mission of its own.
Stowaway: Curse of the Red Pearl combines high sea adventure with dark horror, and paints a world filled with both mundane and otherworldly dangers. It builds a claustrophobic sense of supernatural terror as Kit and his friends are forced to deal with the dangers of nature and an unknown horror possessing the ship.

I first would like thank the author the chance for reading this book for free. I do admit I was hesitant cause I thought I wasn't going enjoy it but it was wonderful refreshing.... It's very nice and deep. I immediately can't wait for part 2.
In Stowaway: Curse of the Red Pearl, Kit Cabot is a young boy in the early nineteenth century. An injury he suffered as a child left him with a leg that hurts day in day out. Despite that, he finds family business tedious and boring, and he wants nothing more than to join his uncle John on his ship. Life on board of the ship turns out to be unlike anything Kit expected though: his uncle guards a mysterious red pearl, and is jealous whenever someone even comes near it. The pearl has an eerie attraction to everyone who comes too close. Kit, along with several members of the crew, tries to help uncle John get rid of it. However, the entity living inside the pearl has other plans and will stop at nothing to get what it wants, and soon, everyone on board the ship, including Kit, is in mortal peril.
Kit is an enjoyable character, and despite having a personality suitable for nineteenth century life, he is easy to sympathize with. Sometimes when reading historical fiction, history and time seems to add so many layers between the reader and the characters that they’re impossible to relate to, but Stowaway: Curse of the Red Pearl, doesn’t suffer from that. If anything, the setting is a blessing. Demonic possession is used in literature every now and then, but this is the first time I’ve seen it used on board of a ship in the 1800s.
Mix in an unique setting with good writing, and you get a 110-page long (in my pdf version at least) story that will scare you and entertain you at the same time.

When John Cabot, the Captain of the West Indies Trading Ship Apollyon arrived in Boston after a trading voyage, Kit Cabot, John’s young nephew can’t wait to see him. Quickly, though, Kit’s enthusiasm turns to concern as it becomes clear that John is suffering from some unknown illness or influence that is quickly devouring him. So serious is John’s illness that a couple of the ship’s senior crew members talk Kit into stowing away on the Apolly on because they feel Kit is the only person John will listen too. The result is an opportunity for Kit to go sea thereby foiling his father’s plan to have him operate the family shipping business, but John’s rage and the rage of the entity possessing John is also kindled against Kit. What follows is a desperate tale of frustration and struggle for survival against unnatural forces of great strength. Actually, the ship’s name, Apollyon, is the perfect name for this particular ship. The author displayed great imagination in choosing it. I had not read anything by Tracy Fobes before. What I found was a story told simply, to the point and with unambiguous language. There is no doubting the action, the dangers, the mental processes and the building terror throughout the story. Ms Fobes is a master storyteller. In approximately one hundred pages, Ms Fobes managed to lead me through a young man’s first experience as a sailor on sailing ship, the horror of being isolated on that ship with a strange and unknown force and a debilitated Captain, through the realization that the unknown force is more powerful and more dangerous than believed possible and that fighting should be made a life work. I actually found myself spellbound; mesmerized by the story unfolding in front of me. For those addicted to supernatural thrillers, or those want a little stronger kick in the pants, I recommend “Stowaway, Curse of the Red Pearl”.
This is a high seas adventure with lots of magical happenings. Kit is intrigued by a life at sea which he has not been able to accomplish, until he stows away on one of his Uncles trips. But his Uncle begins to act very strange throughout the trip and it is up to Kit to help his Uncle. I really liked this book it was a change from the type of fantasy I have been reading, which was a great. I would have to say Kit is definitely my favorite character. I really felt like he was real and I found myself really hoping he won out against the “bad guy”. I would have to say my favorite part is the scene in the cave where everything takes a turn for the worse. The book is really a page turner; you will find yourself dying to know what happens next. I cannot say that I disliked much about the book other than the death of certain characters which I had hoped would make it. This book is part of a series but the story in this one is pretty standalone so you won’t feel like you missing anything once you finish, ofcourse the happenings in this book do leave an opening for future books. I would recommend this book for older readers as it can be sort of gory. I would have to say I rate this book a 4 fang on the fang scale. **Reviewer for Paranormal Romance and Authors That Rock..
I finished this book in 3 days. It was not what I expected at all. It was a good book, but honestly just not my type of book. It read like I was watching a horror movie. There was a lot of action, and plenty of things going on, and it kept my attention because I always wanted to know what was going to happen next. I just wish that I could have gotten to know the characters a little better. Why doesn't Kit like his mother? Why doesn't Kit's father like his own brother, even though he sails one of his ships?
Also, the ending didn't seem completely explained, and I guess in a horror genre it isn't completely necessary, but I was left feeling like name of the beast went... How to say that without spoilers? In certain ways the beast doesn't live up to his name.
Enjoyed the book, but I wasn't prepared to disengage the part of my brain that asks all the questions, and I wish I had. If you love horror movies though, you will probably like this book. The violence and gore is pretty great. The monster is scary. There are tentacles! I plan on telling my husband to read it, because I think he will like it.
I received this book as part of a first-reads give away through Good Reads.
Kit Cabot is a young man, trapped in a warehouse, that dreams of big sea adventures. When he stows away on his uncle's ship, however, he gets more adventure than he bargained for as he is propelled on a voyage to the West Indies.
This is a tale of and nightmare, quite a bit more than what I thought from the brief synopsis that I read. It is a story of terror and intrigue that moves quickly and leaves you wanting more. I cringed, I hoped, and my heart ached while I was reading this book.
Admittedly, it took me a bit to get into the story, however - once Kit was tucked away on the ship, I was hooked and couldn't put the book down until there were no more pages.
Absolutely a must read for anyone that enjoys horror, thrillers, and adventures.
I hope Tracy Fobes will continue with another book in what could easily be an awesome series.
This to me is a great book for young adults. It has action, suspense, and a bit of horror. It is a coming of age through while on the rough waters of the sea. There were surprises that will keep you reading when you thought you would want to put it down. Imagine paranormal with a touch of tall tales from the sea. Bad omens and strong bonds of the men that were willing to put his life on the line for the sake of the ship. Look forward to reading more by the author. Her writing made the 183 page book go by quickly.
