Gareth is an accidental star of Welsh TV and a continuous commentator on farming on Twitter where his handle is @1GarethWynJones. He is an exponent of hill farming, the Welsh language and loves his Carneddau mountains and ponies. His catch phrase is “living the dream” and he explains in his book how lucky he feels to have the upbringing he has. The book is full of warm, heartfelt memories and honest opinions of the people he has met through the years. Painfully honest at times and yet not maliciously so. I loved the book, even though I’m sure Gareth would be the first to admit he’s no author. I can’t wait to see more of him on TV and he’s one of the few media personalities that I would like to spend time with. Especially on his hills. Da iawn Gareth.

This book is the English language version of The Hill Farmer, by the charismatic and popular Gareth Wyn Jones, the Welsh farmer from Llanfairfechan North Wales. Gareth first came to prominence on our TV screens during the severe weather in March 2013 when film maker Matthew Knight followed him around his hill farm while he rescued sheep and lambs buried in snow drifts and the footage was shown on national news channels.

Since then Gareth has had two TV series of his own 'The Hill Farmer' and 'The Farmer and the Food chain' and appeared in countless other programmes including 'Come Dine with Me' and Snowdonia 1890.

The book is full of interesting anecdotes, some of them laugh out loud about farming life and the farm called Ty’n Llwyfan, in the Carneddau mountain range, Snowdonia where the author and his family have farmed for over 350 years. Gareth is a quite a reluctant celebrity who cares passionately about his family, the rural way of living, and farming.

He is a strong advocate for sourcing and buying local produce and supporting local farmers and food producers rather than buying mass produced, imported, over processed food in supermarkets.

I found the book to be a very interesting read and look forward to reading more books about life as a hill farmer from Gareth Wyn Jones.
