Sophie Seacove is a storyteller. She tells stories of what the world would be like if madness hadn’t taken over. If her parents hadn’t sold her off as a servant to pay for their stupid vacation. If she wasn’t now trapped in a decaying mansion filled with creepy people and surrounded by ravenous sea monsters.
The mansion has plenty of stories, too: About fantastical machines, and the tragic inventor who created them. About his highly suspicious death. And about the Monster Box, a mysterious object hidden in the house that just might hold the key to escaping this horrible place—and to reuniting Sophie with her family.
But not everyone wants Sophie to have the Monster Box, and as she gets closer to finding it, she finds herself unspooling years-old secrets—and dodging dangerous attacks. Sophie needs to use her brains, her brawn, and her unbreakable nature if she wants to make it off this wretched island…and live to tell this story.

I will come back for review! ----- Okay, I think it is time to write the review! Later I said it's wonderful but why?! Because first, it brings me back to my own childhood when I tell stories of any kind to everyone! Also, I love this story for its weird atmosphere. When I read the first pages, I said to myself: "what kind of parents in the world could banish their own daughter from themselves and go to a beautiful Land without their daughter! When I chose this book for reading and translating, I knew that it's the first book of the author and the story might not be so strong and have any surprise elements for me but now I should admit Charlotte Salter do a great job in writing this beautiful story and her work is beyond my expectations! This story is full of nostalgia. It reminded me of Alice in wonderland, Coraline and the great works of Tim Burton! Just as said in the explanations of the book.
I recommend this book with all my heart! -----------------------------------
I really enjoyed this book and think that Charlotte Salter is a new talent worth watching. I had the privilege of receiving an ARC this fall and really got into it over the holidays. You might wonder why I found the story of someone stranded in a strange house surrounded by sea monsters so engaging in the midst of Yuletide cheer, but there you have it. Who needs reindeer when you can have demikracken?
The story takes place in a world gripped by a chilling phenomenon called "Sea Fever" where people go mad in the face of monsters lurking off their coasts. The protagonist, Sophie, a feisty six-toed teenager with white hair, has been sold into servitude by her parents in exchange for "golden tickets" that will get them aboard a ship bound for a "New Continent" that is blissfully free of the sea monster scourge.
Sophie isn't a willing servant, much less a deferential one. She's abducted and forced at gunpoint across a temporary causeway to an island house of horrors. The household she serves is something like a Lovecraftian Addams family. There's the gruff widow known as the Battleship, her legitimately frightening twin sociopath sons, the dashing-if-mysterious cousin Cartwright, and the long-suffering Mr. Scree, who serves the family and teaches Sophie how to keep the island's surrounding horrors at bay by feeding them bones (thus the novel's name). As Sophie settles into her strange new existence, it becomes clear that this house of horrors and mystery is also holding a secret that may, or may not, be the key to curing the insidious Sea Fever plaguing the world...
Salter's book is an interesting one. She writes very well and I think readers will enjoy her descriptions and dialog between Sophie, the endearing Mr. Scree, and the cast of loonies that stalk the secret corridors and hidden rooms of this strange island. There's no questioning the author's imagination, her ability to create a compelling atmosphere, or her talent for inventing intriguing details. If there's a fault, it's that some of these elements come at the expense of leaning a bit more about some of the characters, or when/why Sea Fever gripped the world, where the monsters came from, or why they seem to have some sort of kinship or affinity for Sophie. A beat or two is missing, but it didn't detract from my enjoyment. As Lovecraft famously said, "Explain nothing!" and there's an aspect of that at play here. Overall, the world building is fun and spooky with equal parts horror, humor, and whimsy. I think readers young and old will enjoy it.
I give this a 4-star rating partially for the fact that I listened to it as an audiobook - it needs a little extra edge for all the times that I zoned out because I stupidly tried to listen to it while reading a recipe or deciphering a cross-stitch pattern - and partially because it was just really fun.
Sophie Seacove is one of the most interesting, consistent, outrageously flawed but still heroic and sympathetic heroines in... uh, YA? I hope it's YA? (More on that later~) Yeah, I'm going with YA, for a few reasons. Anyway, she was great. Her main characteristic is "ALWAYS ANGRY" which I usually find very off-putting (for MCs of any gender, to settle any preconceived notions), but Sophie had such good reasons to be angry, for one thing, and she was so CONSISTENTLY angry, and that anger was not always seen as a good thing. It's both her strength and her weakness, and I'm just... so in love with Sophie Seacove as a character. I feel like this could end up being a re-read (if I can get my hands on the actual book to READ it) just to analyze this strange white-haired six-toed storyteller with anger issues. I love her.
The side characters were so good! Scree sort of made me think of a cross between Hagrid and Filch - like Filch but with a little more of Hagrid's affable nature/likability. . Cartwright was such a thoroughly entertaining breath of fresh air - it could be that it's because these characters are younger than your average YA fare, around 12-14, but there was no sculpted jawline or golden hair or smoldering eyes anywhere in sight, . He's insufferable and too big for his britches but he's also so much FUN. (I mean, of course, why WOULDN'T he be a celebrated captain at the tender age of 12-14? It would be preposterous in a negative way if Cartwright weren't so... well, what's his full name, Master Most Horrible Cartwright? It's just preposterous in a good way because he's so much HIM.)
As a self-proclaimed dilettante gourmet in the area of twins, I just want to say: Ralph and Gale are terrifying. Point blank, terrifying. Creepy. Weird. It could be partially the narrator's work that makes them so skin-crawling horror movie-esque, but I just think they were truly disturbing. Which leads to my "this has got to be YA not MG" point, which is in spoilers, because it's spoilery.
Are there things I have problems with? Obviously, or it'd be a 5-star. Scree, in general, is a little too cliché, as is The Battleship (the twins' mother and Cartwright's aunt). As much worldbuilding as there was for larger aspects of the story, it could have done with a good bit more work on the smaller details. Is this England but with sea monsters? Not really, since everyone wants to go to the New Continent, which you might presume is America but this is by the time Sophie's nation has automobiles. If it's an alternate history story then there needs to be more markers, and if it's not so much an alternate history as much as a "this is a relatively modernish, 20th century world where girls still regularly are made to wear uncomfortable dresses, but it's not supposed to be England exactly," then there needs more work. I would have loved more context, since the house where Sophie stays (I can't remember, ugh, it's hard for me to remember names that aren't repeated a lot when I only hear them) is pretty much isolated from the entire world.
But, gosh. This was really fun. I'm glad I re-checked it out on Hoopla after my first checkout expired - I almost didn't, but I had a feeling there was something to it that I would miss if I didn't finish. I'm glad I did.
Sometimes you just need a book with monsters, y'know? I only took this one home from the library because the cover art was so arresting - I mean, look at Sophie just standing there all fierce with her Storm-esque hair and her ripped dress and that PIERCING stare. I mean, dat grrl is PEESED, I'll tell you that much. So while I wasn't overly excited by what the book was about (according to the jacket cover, anyway) I was still intrigued enough to take it home and give 'er a go.
Well, it wasn't what I expected. No, it was SO MUCH MORE. This was a rollercoaster that I want everyone to take in order to see how GOOD kidlit can be. This is Charlotte Salter's first book, and I sincerely hope she writes more. Between the haunted house and the creepy twins (man, who doesn't love a set of creepy twins #mirite) and the Hugo-ish elements with the Clock Room and the Battleship and MANIC THE HORSE and just SOPHIEEEE I can't tell you how much I love that girl. She's fearless and taking names and so ready to deliver some VENGEANCE that she really just doesn't give a RIP. Ugh, guys, she's amazing.
The only thing I can say in the negative about this book is that Sophie's role as a storyteller really has nothing to do with anything. Sure, the stories she tells are interesting and all the mentions of the Sea Queen's crown and the red jewel were interesting, but it never seemed to really tie back to the main thread of the plot. It was kind of just a thing that never got evolved. But yeah, other than that, no real complaints. Could have used a couple other things happening to spice up the 300 pages, but for a first novel this was beyond any expectations I could have set.
Great book captivating and dream like. The book definitely has characters you love to hate and hate to love. Quick read or listen nice change of pace from the normal genre I choose to read.
I listened to this one on my daily commute, and it turned out to be fantastic. While Young Adult books have been increasingly turning into romance novels in exotic locales or with exotic fantasy creatures, Middle Grade books have been taking up the inventive torch.
The book does a great job introducing us to a world that is both familiar and foreign. Yes, we're in England with modern marvels like cars and electricity, but it's been cut off from the world, not having developed the way that it did in real life. Everything seems to make sense, even though it's completely wrong.
We're also introduced to a varied cast of characters. Our MC is tenacious and strong, the villain is psychotic (arguably too much so, but I liked it), everyone seemed very well rounded except perhaps The Battleship, who played a very minor role anyway.
The plot sails right along, with great action, interesting intrigue, and a good reveal at the end.
Not to say that the book didn't have a few flaws. The main issue I had was the thought of someone selling off their child. Yes, it happens, but usually it's drug or poverty related, which didn't really fit with what we know about the characters. Second, and I should probably add the spoiler tag here That reveal doesn't make any sense, but I can suspend my disbelief for the minor issue or two.
So a fun book from a debut author. Looking forward to reading more of her work in the future.
Ms. Salter is a great writer; she has created a pretty nice cosmology for the heroine, Sophie Seacove.
The detailed description of Catacomb Hill is pretty awesome. The illustration of the mansion on the cover does not do it justice...it is way bigger and inside, way creepier. The protagonist is pretty tough. There are a lot of trials that she has to endure. There are some good lessons in this book: perseverance, self-reflection, empathy, and team work, to name a few.
I don't want to give too many details but the ending is in the traditional sci-fi way...optimistic, which is perfect for MG readers.
Sophie Seacove tells stories. Stories about her life, and what it would be like had the world not been taken over by a madness inflicted by the sea. However, we launch into her story as she is forcibly taken to live in a decaying mansion on a desolate island with a family that can only be described as ghastly surrounded by the sea monsters that everyone most fears.
The mansion is packed with secrets and stories itself though, as awful as the place is. And Sophie is determined to find these out, particularly the Monster Box which she hopes may help her escape and be reunited with her family.
MY THOUGHTS
You know that I’m always a fan of anything that’s set in a dystopian world, so this book immediately appealed to my sense of all things wrong in the world. Throw in the fact that it was a fantastical adventure story aimed at middle grade readers – I recently wrote about how I prefer to read young adult and middle grade fiction over “grown up” books” – and I was sold.
I love a good bit of worldbuilding, and this was a novel that did it fantastically. I found myself desperately wanting to know more about this strange new world that Sophie inhabited and the creatures within it. The writing was so vivid that I found myself fearing the sea monsters alongside her, despising and being intrigued by the odd characters she encountered, and feeling her curiosity as she explored the wonderfully fantastic and grotesque mansion.
Not only was the setting brilliant, but we were introduced to a volley of bizarre and wonderful characters. As I’ve already said, they were both despicable and intriguing at the same time. The Battleship, the mistress of the house, was mysterious and in your face at the same time; the twins were slightly terrifying (and I loved that each had their own personality – you don’t always get that!); and you ended up feeling empathy for characters who at first seemed somewhat repulsive.
And on top of the main story, we have the underlying stories that Sophie tells – it’s like multiple books in one!
It has a mildly gothic and an almost steampunk feel about it that makes it so different from most other books on the market. The only things I can think to compare it to are a Series of Unfortunate Events and Tim Burton in terms of characters and tone, but I found it more exciting and adventurous than even those.
If you’ve got a middle grade (8 to 12 year old) child, or even if you just like thrilling stories that aren’t compromised by the confusion of teen and adulthood, this is one to read. Or if you just like adventure, twisted characters and plain good old fashioned storyteller, it’s one for you.
57%like👎3 star ⭐️⭐️⭐️it’s so so and not good But it had its potential to the better. The word Neptune was used a lot😔😔😔
This was the 29th book I read this month, to close out the month. I haven’t read that much ever-unless when I was a kid. This book was so good! This is such an intriguing story, w/amazing details, & so imaginative. Sophie is an amazing main character. So feisty, sassy, strong, brave, & smart. Everyone in the world has gotten “sea fever” over fear of the sea monsters. Her parents sold her to a group of crazies in a decaying creepy mansion surrounded by the sea(b/c of that fear. They took the money to buy boat tickets to the “New Continent” where there was said to be no sea monsters). It’s her job to help Mr. Scree feed the sea monsters bones from the catacombs, so they don’t attack the house. I absolutely loved Mr. Scree. He was the best character. The other people in the house are the mom, who is crazy, but not as psycho as her 2 twin sons. They are lunatics. Cartwright is their cousin who visits every so often looking for the monster box his uncle left him before he died. The twins stole it after their dad died before he could get it. He always recruits the new servants to help. So he & Sophie team up. Cartwright was such an interesting character, & I really enjoyed him. I loved seeing the relationship b/n he & Sophie, & how it developed through the book. Sophie has to always keep lookout for the twins, who are always watching, & trying to hurt her most of the time-crazies!! The sea monsters were such a creative bunch. All different, all creepy, & yet...all so amazing! Lol have to read it to understand. The idea of sea fever to me is a very possible thing that could happen in real life. People fear the unknown, & that fear makes them think & act crazy. It can spread like crazy too. I just found the whole plot fascinating. Such a creepy, mysterious, creative, adventure. I love this cover too.😍😍 Highly recommend!!💜💜
I enjoyed the strong, curious and stubborn main character Sophie, who wants to be a storyteller. When she ends up on a crazy island, forced into a job lobbing bones to nasty beasties, which surround the island, she doesn't give up hope, but instead sets out to solve the island's mystery. When another member of the crazy family residing on the island offers her a deal, she takes it and begins the search for something called the Monster Box, an artifact that should hold the answer to the mysterious sea illness which caused her parents to sell her off as an servant rather than have to live near the sea anymore.
But, not everyone on the island wants the Monster Box found. In fact, the Battleship and her two sons, very evil versions of Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, will do everything in their power to keep her from succeeding...maybe even kill her!
Will Sophie's storytelling, cleverness and tenacity be enough to get her off this wretched, falling apart island?
Fun details, I think kids would especially enjoy the description of the mansion with all of it's bizarre rooms, traps and secrets. As well as the fact that it's just plain weird, there are tentacle monsters, a twisty plot that keeps you guessing and a bunch of bizarre characters. Grades 6+, for those who liked The Dark is Rising series or Keys to the Kingdom series by Garth Nix, check this one out. It also reminded me a bit of a Teen series I read by Edward Carey, this first one is called Heap House and is about a mansion in the middle of a rubbish heap (which even though it is in teen would be okay for 6th grade up too.)
The only reason I picked up “The Bone Snatcher” was because the cover had a girl riding a sea monster like someone took her happy meal. And I am so glad that I did because it has become my favorite book by my now favorite author. The book is about a young girl named Sophia. Her parents abandoned her in fear and sent her to live and work in the infamous house on catacomb hill. In the opening, Sophia is in a car on the way to catacomb hill and the driver is explaining why she was left behind by her parents. When they arrive Sophia finds out that the house is on a small island connected to the shore by a thin path that the tide hides most of the year. After walking to the house, the tide rises and the path disappears. This opening really sets the tone for the book and what's to come for Sophia. The book revolves around her getting used to her new home. And learn the deep history that surrounds the mysterious house and its inhabitants. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a good mystery story.
