The police chief, the lumberjack, and a new start…

Reg

I don’t usually hand out tickets, but the new lumberjack isn’t barreling into town on my watch. We take law and order seriously in the Four Forest area. And yes, okay…I’m a little curious about the mountain man.

Waylon is funny, charming, cool, and confident, and like it or not, I’m attracted to him.

Reality check: I’m also a single dad juggling stressful family issues and a high-profile job. My schedule doesn’t leave much room for extracurricular activities.

But a temporary, no-strings fling? Yeah…that could be interesting.

Waylon

I should be irked about getting pulled over. I mean, c’mon. I wasn’t going that fast.

Thing is…I’ll take any excuse that puts me in the police chief’s orbit. Reg is a quintessential silver fox. Seriously. He’s also a good man, a great dad, and a cool human. I like him, and I love Wood Hollow, but at the end of my contract, I’m heading home. My family needs me.

In the meantime, there’s no crime against having some fun. And it’s not as if I’m gonna develop feelings, or—
Too late.

Mountain Man is an MM bisexual small-town romance featuring Wood Hollow’s silver fox police chief, the new lumberjack, and some single-dad shenanigans.

That was a heady mix of lots of fun with a more serious side hidden inside Reg who - at times - I really felt like needed a good shake to get him to see what was in front of his face.

However, Waylon was the same, so really they made a perfect pair of men who've been dealing with complicated families and things not always playing out how they'd expected in their younger years.

For me, Lane handled the dementia storyline with Reg's dad in an incredibly sympathetic and understanding fashion, it made sense in how it affected Reg's day to day actions alongside the pressure of being the Chief of Police.

Family is a big part of this storyline, and this series overall, and I loved Reg's kids, neither of them felt overplayed or too involved and Waylon's nephew Emmett was a little ball of sunshine. The bits with Reg's wife Jess, however, didn't run as smoothly for me, sometimes I wondered why she was getting page time that didn't really directly relate to where the narrative was going.

Of course, it's also steamy, and with both me vers, it made for some epic encounters that were very grounded in both emotion and also lust.

Overall I'm glad both of them got their heads out of their backsides and realised that worries about future possible outcomes weren't a good enough reason to ignore how a solid and happy long term relationship was dangling right in front of them.

Reg and Waylon were so adamant that they weren't in a relationship that it kind of became a running joke for everyone else in town! Honestly, these two needed their heads knocked together 😂😂

This book actually had a much more serious feel to it than the previous ones as it heavily features Reg's dad who has dementia and is deteriorating fairly quickly. I loved his more lucid moments though and the way he was the one to declare that Reg and Waylon were boyfriends, especially after the rocky history between Reg and his dad. I think Reg really needed that conversation to let go of a lot of resentment he was feeling.

We also have a subplot of Waylon's sister and her recovery from addiction, where Waylon takes on a lot of responsibility for his nephew and parents and doesn't quite know how to let go of the reigns. The way he loves Emmett was really sweet and I loved how they spent so much time together, even though they live far apart. I alos loved how Waylon immediately took to Reg's kids too, and became a sounding board for them and a huge support.

These two were just adorable really, and I loved how easily they fell into such a domestic relationship! I love the single dad trope, and I really love romances where there's family and domesticity so quickly so this was a fun read for me.

This book is ok. It’s not great but it’s a nice read. The cover however… not sure if it’s my screen or the actual picture but the eyes on this guy are Halloween scary 😱 It has nothing to do with the book itself but I thought I’d mention it anyway 🤣🤣🤣

I enjoyed this but I felt like something was missing. I adored Reg’s kids and Dad and Waylon’s nephew and I loved visiting with the other couples from the first two books. I really love this town and its residents.

I think the issue I had was with Reg & Waylon. I was rooting for them but I felt like they were overshadowed by all the family stuff. The sex scenes were glossed over and I was surprised because Lane usually writes those so well. I felt like we were told about their developing relationship but not shown it. I wanted more of them and I felt I never got that.

The bit with Reg’s ex-wife was strange. That seemed unnecessary. I loved how Waylon formed such a close bond with Reg’s children though. And how Reg’s dad really accepted and enjoyed Waylon’s company. That was a bittersweet storyline.

I am looking forward to more stories in this series!!!

I adored the previous books of this series, but I think this one is going to be my favourite! It was truly amazing.

Reg is the Chief of Police in Wood Hollow. He’s a bisexual man in his forties, divorced with two teenage children, a man who is completely dedicated to his job and his family.
Reg is also a man with a lot of responsibilities that are weighing him down: the job is demanding, the children are in a delicate phase of their growth and need guidance and support, his ex wife is meddling and his father has just been diagnosed with dementia and he has been starting to wander around town.
Reg is a wonderful man, but he has denied himself for so long, he has made everyone else a priority and now he feels lonely. There are also regrets and resentments from the past that haunt him, especially regarding his relationship with his father who was not accepting when Reg came out as bisexual after his divorce (by the way, the author did a wonderful job with the storyline Clark’s dementia).

Waylon is new in town: he has been hired by Cooper to do a job at Depot Mill and he’s doing it brilliantly. His stay in Wood Hollow is not permanent, his contract will be up in less than a year, so he doesn’t really see the point of making friends. He mostly keeps it to himself. His plan is to work, save money and go back to his family that needs him (his sister is in fact a recovering addict)
Except that his wonderful nephew pushes him out of his cave when he arrives to spend a month with his uncle: Emmett is a precious little ray of sunshine, he wants to do everything, he makes friends so easily and, above all, he loves his uncle to pieces.

One day, Reg pulls Waylon over when he has his chatty nephew in the car and they talk a bit. They are instantly very attracted to each other and when Waylon goes to the airport to send Emmett back, they have a very steamy encounter in a hotel room.
The sensible thing for both of them would be considering their wonderful afternoon together like a one and done kind of thing, but the attraction is too strong to be ignored and they start hooking up on the regular.

But physical connection is not the only pull they feel: they talk every day, they laugh and joke, they confide in each other and they rely on each other too. Waylon becomes a permanent fixture in Reg’s life, he also establishes a connection with his family: Reg’s children adore him and involve him in their activities, and surprisingly, Reg’s dad feels so at ease with Waylon to the point that they spend a lot of time together doing carpentry projects.
Reg is overwhelmed by the love for this man: Waylon just gets him in every way, he’s like the missing pieces in Reg’s life, he carved a place for himself in Reg’s everyday routine and just stayed there, steadily and meaningfully. Their love grows day by day and when it’s time for Waylon to go back to his family, the pain caused by the separation is unbearable.

I didn’t like Reg’s ex wife and I didn’t understand her jealous outburst. Honestly I would have preferred for Rg to slam a door in her face instead of hugging her because her speech made absolutely no sense to me.
And I would have loved to see more Emmett in this story: gosh this kid is wonderful, I needed more scenes with him thinking outside the box!

The epilogue was beautifully perfect, it had everything I wanted for Reg and Waylon

This series keeps getting better, I can wait for the next installment, Beau and Davey’s story.
Highly recommended.

SOOOOOO cute, and so incredibly needed after reading three angst-ridden books in a row. Sometimes it's nice to just show up on two dudes figuring their shit out and being really happy about it.

Reg and Waylon were super cute with each other, I loved how easily Way was integrated into Reg's family, as well as the town. Rhys and Gretchen and Emmett were all very sweet additions as well. I'm so in love with this town, and need to go back and read the Elmwood books, because this whole four-town situation feels like it has the capacity to keep expanding, and I want to stay abreast of the goings-on. The story of Reg's dad and his starting battle with dementia was handled very thoughtfully as well. My history with parents with dementia in these books tends to be more from the perspective of someone who is much further gone to the disease, and that care is of course complicated as well, but there's something so hard about the start of the slow decline and having to watch everyone in their lives come to terms with it. Way's connection with Reg's dad was possibly my favorite part of the story.

In terms of criticisms, my biggest is how similar this felt to Silas and Cooper's book. Obviously they're very different characters, but it was still out-of-towner connects with town institution who is a single parent to two kids, connection grows, starts to involve the kids in a really cute way, out-of-towner has to leave, comes back almost immediately because this is where home is. It's a wonderful story structure and if this weren't the same series, I wouldn't even comment on it, but it is the same series. Also I wish more had been done with Way's sister, it felt like a Chekhov's Gun situation that Way would eventually have to step up for Emmett because his sister and parents wouldn't be able to. I'm not mad that it didn't come to that, obviously the happier outcome is the sister continuing to grow in her recovery and to be able to be Emmett's support in a way she previously wasn't, but it made the whole story with Way's family feel a lot more superfluous and unfulfilled.

Thank you to GRR for an eARC of this title, this is my honest review.

When Reg La Rue, police chief of Wood Hollow, pulls over the new guy in town, he doesn't expect to be instantly attracted. Waylon Gibbons is tall, tatted, bearded, and sexy as hell, and only in town for a short contract before returning back home.

When their paths keep crossing and their friendship becomes physical, both men are up for an easy friends with benefits situation. Reg has enough going on -- being a dad to two teenagers, keeping four small towns in line, and corralling his ailing father. He hardly has time to breathe, let alone be in a relationship. And even if he's technically out, there's nothing he wants less than being gossip fodder.

But as Waylon becomes more integrated into Wood Hollow -- and Reg's life and family -- it becomes apparent that sometimes, even though you're not looking for love, it finds you anyway.

Man, I love Wood Hollow. I love Elmwood too, and all of Lane's small towns, but I honestly think Wood Hollow is my favorite. And every time a new book comes out in this series, it immediately becomes my new favorite as well.

Waylon and Reg's relationship was so easy. They had zero expectations, they gave each other exactly what the other needed, and they took care of each other without making a big deal out of everything. Way's relationship with Reg's kids and father was so sweet, and I absolutely loved how he managed to care for the stoic sheriff without fanfare, because if Reg had caught on, he never would have let Way do it. And Way needed Reg and his family too: somewhere to belong, somewhere to finally let his guard down and take a breath and realize that he didn't need to always be waiting for the other shoe to drop.

This one was cute and funny and had a perfect amount of spice...and it also made me cry. A lot. I knew everything would be okay, but I loved them so much and it got to me. 💛

Mountain Man is the third book in the Wood Hollow Stories series.

This time, the story centers on Sheriff Reg, whom we met in the second book because he had a deal with Dexter.
Reg, a divorced father raising two nearly teenage children and caring for a father who is developing dementia, has no time for romantic relationships. Only for one-night stands—but in secret. Although he has come to terms with his bisexuality, he doesn’t live it openly.

Waylon has been living in town for a few months, but the arrival of his nephew forces him to interact with the rest of the town. He’s always been a free spirit, unencumbered by ties, but he’s approaching forty.

Reg and Waylon begin having casual encounters, which become more frequent as Reg’s children and father become involved, though they deny that they’re a couple. Reg’s attitude toward his bisexuality plays a major role in this.

It seems like just another romance, but it touches on some pretty adult themes.

I really like this series, set in the small town of WoodHollow.

I want to keep reading this series, and I’m eagerly awaiting the next book.

Reg and Waylon ❤️

5 Stars ⭐️

I have waited for Reg's story since he was introduced and I am a pile of Goo right now!! Honestly, this story is amazing. When I break into a Lane Hayes book, I know two things will happen, I'll giggle my **s off and my heart will be full by the end..... of course that happened and so much more.... Reg and Waylon were the perfect pair, add in some small town vibes, a hilarious nephew, sexy times, and endearing family wood working. You get two wonderful men who fell in love without even realizing it ❤️. I can't give this book enough praise, the emotional moments in this book actually brought me to tears, I was so glad to finally see the reasons why Reg was adverse to relationships and to actually see him get the closures and acceptance he so desperately needed to move forward. It played out in such a heartwarming manner, again cried like a baby not gonna lie. I would highly recommend this read, it is my favorite Lane Hayes book by a mile now ❤️. Side note, I cannot look at sidewalk chalk the same now 🤣 IYKYK. Can't wait for the next story!!

I’m so happy that Reg finally got his HEA. While Mountain Man can easily be read as a standalone you can learn more about Reg if you read book two, Sweet Something first; all of the books in this series are fantastic.

While this isn’t exactly a single dad story it kind of has the feel of one because Waylon is looking after his nephew while his sister recovers. I love how much Waylon cared for Emmett and how Reg also comes to care for him.

This story touched my heart and made me shed a few happy tears and I love it when a book does that.

An advanced copy of this book was provided to me at my request; my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.

I have been waiting for Reg’s story and it did not disappoint!! I loved Waylon for him! He was so easy going and care free, exactly what the Chief of police needed to help him slow down and enjoy life. Waylon fit into their family so seamlessly, like he had always been a part of it. Reg was so open and communicated what was on his mind and that was refreshing to read for once! I loved how he didn’t hold back how he was feeling even though he didn’t know what to do about those feelings. Their arrangement was perfect for them and so so hot!! This was my favorite story of the series and I really enjoyed seeing all the past characters again! Cannot wait for the Christmas book!

Such a warm and contented story.

Two stubborn men who refuse to believe they aren’t casual. Despite how much more happiness and fullness their lives have, no matter how much they don’t want to lose what they have. Until it’s almost too late.

Reg & Waylon are great guys. Steadfast, caring, and perhaps a bit too loyal to others. Both forget to think about themselves and their happiness. You love them for it as much as you're saddened by it.

It’s a sweet story with a lovely mix of gentle, thoughtful, and fun.

I loved Reg and Waylon! We finally get Reg’s book and it was worth the wait! These two were prefect for each other. All it took was for Reg to pull Waylon over for speeding to get these two hooked on each other. I loved the banter between them as well as the growing connection and chemistry. The ending darn near broke my heart but it was worth it in the end. I can’t wait for Davey’s story next.

This was a lovely humorous and emotional read. Reg, Chief of Police, pulls over Waylon and that starts this storyline off! I love Reg’s kids and Waylon’s nephew. Reg’s Dad has a story that makes me emotional. I thought this was an awesome storyline and tied into the series and flag football perfectly!

Mountain Man by Lane Hayes is the 3rd book in her Wood Hollow Stories series. It is the story of a small-town police chief with a lot on his plate and a lumberjack intending to move on and how they fall in love. Reg La Rue grew up in Wood Hollow, Vermont. He was the son of the police captain who was stern and expected him to tow the line. He followed in his footsteps and is now the town’s police chief. At 46 he’s seen and been through a lot but loves the town and his job. He was married to Jess and had two kids, Rhys who was 14 and Gretchen who was 9, but they split up when they were little because it seemed to Jess that Reg was married to his job and put her last. Now the kids split their time between them and he was a great father. But he also had another problem in that his father had dementia and often wandered the town, getting lost and confused. He was trying to keep it quiet but as it progressed it was getting harder and harder, especially in a town full of people who loved to gossip. He had also come out as bi after his divorce and wanted his kids to know there was nothing wrong with that. Then one day he got a call about a speeder on Belvedere Road and when he stopped him, he saw Waylon Gibbons with his 7 year old nephew Emmett in the back seat. Waylon was the newly hired lumber specialist at the Mill Depot run by Reg’s best friend Cooper. Everyone called him a mountain man. He had been restless growing up and after high school had traveled west and met a trucker who introduced him to being with a man, dated an investment analyst who helped him build his portfolio, learned many jobs along the way, and came home when his sister became pregnant and tried to help out. But she was a drug addict and was now in her 3rd stay at rehab so he had Emmett for a while during the summer and he was loving his time doing all the activities Wood Hollow had for kids. He only planned to be there for 8 months because the Mill Depot was opening a new store in Richmond and he hoped to get a transfer there since it was closer to where his parents, sister, and Emmett lived and he could help them out more. From their first meeting, Reg and Waylon were attracted to each other. When Waylon got a call that Emmett was at the police station for doing something he shouldn’t have because he was thinking outside the box as the elder Mr. La Rue told him to do, they started talking. When Waylon takes Emmett to Burlington to catch a flight back to his mother’s, they see each other in a bar and end up having a hot love scene in Reg’s hotel room. Then Waylon sees Clint La Rue (Reg’s father) lost on a hiking trail and calls Reg to tell him and stays with him until he gets there. Both men are seeing how great the other is with their families and are falling for each other even more. But Reg doesn’t think he can be out in town and Waylon is leaving so they decide to just see each other whenever they can and try to keep it quiet. Waylon helps Clint with some woodworking activities that are good for his dementia and he’s starting to be accepted by people in the town and included in their activities. They continue seeing each other and have some very hot scenes and when Emmett comes to visit, he says that he heard they are boyfriends. Soon they figure out a way to be seen out in public together and Rhys and Gretchen really like Waylon and are supportive of them, even though they haven’t really said anything about being together. Then it’s time for Waylon to leave for Richmond and they are both sad and when 2 weeks go by something has to be done, especially when Waylon is told to follow his heart. There’s a great scene where they can finally be together and say they love each other and then go on to have a great life. I really enjoyed this book. Reg and Waylon are great characters but both have problems in their lives: Reg with his job, kids, ex, and father and Waylon with his sister’s addiction and his elderly parents. They are attracted from the start and soon realize they want to be together, even though they have to keep it quiet. Reg loves his job and is good at it and knows everyone in the town, especially since he grew up with most of them. He loves his kids and is very good with them, and there are some fun moments with them. Waylon thought he was only going to be in Wood Hollow for 8 months but the town grew on him, especially when he made a lot of friends and they included him in their activities. There are some great family scenes, both funny and with some angst, and lots of hot love scenes as they became closer. There was also a great ending when they realize they love each other and wanted to be together. Their friends and the town members also played a big part in the story with both some fun scenes and giving them advice and also all the sports activities the town engages in. It was also nice to see some of the characters from Ms. Hayes previous books. I highly recommend this book, especially if you like stories about a police chief with some problems going on in his life, a mountain man new to the town who doesn’t intend to stay long, and how they come together and fall in love.

Ever since I've read the first book of the Wood Hollow series, I've become super invested. For the first three books, Lane Hayes and Gay Romance Reviews have appreciatively provided an advanced readers copy for me in reciprocity for my honest thoughts and opinions. This being book three, I've got to say, the stories have just gotten better and better, with this one by far becoming my latest favorite!

We've met Police Chief Reg La Rue briefly in the first two books, This Guy and Sweet Something, but this third book, Mountain Man, is finally all about him. At first, we're not sure Reg necessarily meets the man of his dreams, but we do meet Waylon, a temporary Wood Hollow transplant who has a bit of a speeding issue. Along for the ride is his nephew, Emmett, who's visiting for the summer, and is the cutest darned kid ever!

Both men, as hot as they are, aren't relationship types yet are attracted to each other. However, since Waylon is new to town, he takes the slow burn approach. Reg is older, wiser and ain't about that life. He pursues Waylon. Soon enough they become friends and then more than friends, trying to keep their "friendship" a secret from people. But it's a small town so you know how that goes. Especially since Reg's sister Layla is like the town gossip.

One of the things I love about this series is that time goes by. People age. In the earlier books, Reg has young children, and by this book, Rhys and Gretchen are practically teenagers! You also get to hear more about the other couples in town, their children, and where THEY are in life, something Lane considerately made sure to add. Some small-town books tend to stay frozen in time or maybe a month to possibly a year passes by. As you read, you see a few years have passed since the last book.

There are some familiar hurdles The Chief has to go through, and tries to take on alone, but it takes a village and after he finally accepts that truth, he's able to feel less stressed, as he tends to put a lot of responsibility on his shoulder. Something he and Waylon have in common. Nevertheless, they both deserve to have lives of their own, not necessarily laden with all their family's troubles. Because, they too deserve a HEA. Now, I wonder, what does Lane have for us next? 5⭐

Lane Hayes' small-town Vermont romances have been entertaining, and I've enjoyed every visit to the Four Forest area. Each romance is unique, but the supporting cast and the region have become familiar. The stories are sweet and wholesome without avoiding serious topics, and Mountain Man hit home for me.

Reg's dad Clark has dementia that is gradually worsening, and his condition gives the story poignancy and depth. Having been through the grieving process of having a parent with dementia, my heart hurt for both of them and for the whole family.

Reg is truly that steady, true-hearted but totally hot guy, while Waylon was my favorite kind of main character—a little rough around the edges, but intelligent, solid, and compassionate. His scenes with Clark were among my favorites in the book. I loved all the kids and both families, but in my opinion, Clark stole the show.

I also appreciated that the MCs were older. Not that I have anything against twenty-somethings, but I'm over sixty. As much as I want to believe in the HEAs of those young guys, sometimes I have to truly suspend disbelief because I know how many years and challenges they still have ahead of them. Reg and Waylon have already been through some stuff in their lives, and while there are no guarantees, I'm more inclined to believe they can work through whatever comes up. Don't get me wrong—that doesn't mean I won't be posting reviews for college-boy romances in the near future. I just relate more to older characters.

For those who like steam, don't worry, there's plenty, since the guys start out having a "fling" before catching feelings. There's laughter, a few tears, and a lot of small-town charm.

You could read this as a standalone, but I recommend at least starting with the first book in the Wood Hollow Stories, if not the Elmwood Stories.

4.5 Stars!

I really enjoyed this story; I even shed a few tears here and there. It was a sweet story, and I loved watching Waylon and Reg fall into a relationship. Both men have plenty of reasons to keep things to friends with benefits, but they were perfect for each other and just needed to see and accept it.

I loved that Waylon had his nephew Emmett with him at the beginning of the story; it helped both of them in different ways. Emmett was a sweetheart and managed to charm everyone around him, which allowed Waylon to get a better feel for the town and its residents in a way I don't think he would have otherwise. Reg has so much going on and so little time for himself that I was full of sympathy for him. He's a great guy, but he needed something or someone for himself. I loved that Waylon and Reg found themselves together and used those opportunities to get to know each other better. Waylon and Reg fit so well together that it seemed inevitable to me and the whole town, but they needed to find their path themselves. I was glad that they figured out the logistics and made a plan together once they were able to.

Wood Hollow is a great little town, which definitely worked its magic on Waylon. I liked seeing him realize that he didn't need to keep moving. I liked how much Reg's father was able to reveal to Waylon while they spent time together and that Reg finally got to clear the air with his dad because of it. I loved Reg's kids and Waylon's nephew; they all were great throughout the book. I liked how everyone in town knew that they were essentially dating, but didn't press them about it. All in all, it was a great addition to the series.

Book three of the Wood Hollow series gives Reg his story. This can be read as a standalone, but the first two novels will give you insight into the other couples that revisit the book.

Police Chief Reg is a by-the-book kind of guy. Pulling over a speeder starts a chain of events for this career- and family-focused man he never would have expected.

Waylon has been hired on at the Mill Depot for a year. The pay is much better than previous jobs, and he has been a huge supporter of his aging parents and sister, who is battling addiction. This money will help everyone, especially his young nephew Emmett, who is staying with him for a bit. Emmett's mom has been clean and is determined to finally be a mother her son can count on. Waylon has his doubts, so this extra money is a security blanket.

Reg and Waylon click, and before they know it, their mutual attraction has them spending more and more time together. After his nephew returns home, Reg's family fills in the loneliness Waylon feels.

Waylon develops a connection with Reg's dad, who is battling dementia. The police chief refuses to acknowledge his real feelings for the hunky logger. He knows that Way is heading back to Virginia, and his father's reaction to his coming out years ago still hurts.

Lane, in her magical way, creates a strong couple with wonderful personalities and realistic flaws. This town and the people who make up the tight-knit community will touch your heart, and I know you will be rooting for the men to make things work despite life's unfair demands. Happy reading.

Another fantastic addition to this world that Lane Hayes has created. The MC's together are equally hot and entertaining. The family drama that both men carry adds depth and emotion to what they are both dealing with on a daily basis. And, of course, you have got to love small town life where nothing is ever really a secret.
Reg and Waylon's chemistry is instant, from the moment Reg pulls Waylon over in town for speeding down Main Street with his excitable nephew in the back. Subtle flirting and a few more 'innocent' meet ups in town soon have them getting closer in the privacy of their own homes. What stops them from being public about anything is Reg being the son of the retired chief of police, not a man known for his love of all things rainbow. What makes things worse is that he is slowly declining with dementia. In completely unforeseen circumstances, Waylon becomes someone that Reg's dad comes to remember. It makes for some extremely heartfelt moments that come to mean just as much, if not more than their extra heated ones.
I adore this series and Mountain Man might just be my favourite one yet. I adore these men together. Determined to do the right things by their families, it takes a while for them to put themselves first but it's all oh so worth it. The community continues to be funny and supportive and I can't wait for the next book!
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

Another delightful addition to the series! I was so excited to finally get Reg's story and it did not disappoint. I loved Waylon's cheekiness even when getting pulled over and I was very happy to see their relationship grow from there. It was lovely seeing Waylon spend time with Reg's family, from helping with his dad to hanging out with his kids. It was so cute how the whole family loved Waylon even when they were denying being boyfriends while spending all their spare time together. It made me giggle how they were basically going on dates without admitting it to each other and I loved how they both clearly wanted to spend all their time together and were always thinking about each other but still denying that there was something going on. It was delightful when even Reg’s kids didn’t believe them and wanted them to stop pretending they weren’t together. It made me so happy when they finally stopped pretending and decided to just take what time they had left together to really be with one another and spend as much time with each other as they wanted. I definitely shed a few tears when it was time for Waylon to go but of course everything turned out perfectly and I loved getting a glimpse of their future today. These two were so much fun to read about and I can’t wait for the next book in the Wood Hollow series!

Waylon has moved to Wood Hollow to take on a new job for the next eight months. Too bad he starts off by being pulled over by the chief of police. Though is it so bad when he’s really handsome? And despite what could have been a rocky start between them, it is anything but. The attraction between them is strong and when they give in to it, sparks ignite in ways neither saw coming. For Reg, he’s a divorced single dad juggling to take care of his kids, his job, and handling his dad’s dementia diagnosis. A real relationship isn’t in the cards and it hasn’t been for a while. So why does he find time to spend with Waylon? Why does it feel like coming home to him more often than not? They have a deadline. Waylon won’t be staying in Wood Hollow when his contract is done. Yet neither of their hearts got the memo. I loved Waylon and Reg’s story! These two are so insistent that they are friends and that what they have can only ever be just a hook up with a deadline. Yet, the more they get to know one another, the harder these two fall for each other. It’s clear they’ve never felt like this with anyone before. I loved how their relationship developed throughout the story and when they finally get their happily ever after. Just a great story all around in the fun town of Wood Hollow!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Cozy family vibes as counterpoint for the heat😊🏞

These two MCs, divorced father/police chief and the tattoed new guy in town, were a great pairing. The kids, though, added a nice family feel to their relationship and some humor, like Reg's panicked reaction to his daughter's stomachache and Waylon's chalk artist nephew Emmett. These are characters, adults and kids, who obviously enjoy spending quality time together and their closeness, whether woodworking, decorating for the holidays or just hanging out at a picnic, made me happy.

Not a smooth ride (and I like a romance with a bit of adversity) with some serious (and totally realistic) family issues that can only be managed, never solved. I also found the level of heat and the length of the steamy scenes (hot but not too graphic or extended) really fit my tastes. The prospect of Reg and Waylon's permanent parting got me choked up but the ending gave all the good vibes I needed.

Reg's need to keep denying there was a relationship was understandable, I suppose, given the fishbowl he lived in as such a public figure and hometown boy in a small town environment, but I thought the denials went on a bit too long.

I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.

Being new in town and being pulled over by a cop, is not how Waylon Gibbons wanted his day to go. When he sees the cop who is slightly older than him, he cannot get him off his mind.
Waylon is looking after his seven year old nephew, Emmett while his mom attends rehab.

Wood Hollow’s Police chief Reg La Rue, enjoys his job as a cop, even though somedays can be mundane and quiet, but pulling over Waylon is a highlight. Reg comes from a long line of cops in his family. His father, a cop was his mentor, but now he is struggling with dementia.

Waylon and Reg are only ever meant to be friends with benefits, but with their lives becoming more intertwined they start the fall for each other, but Reg has people in his life that rely on him, can he get into a new relationship.

This is the third book in Lane Hayes’ Wood Hollow series.
The characters are so well written. Waylon is such a caring character and the way he looks out for Reg’s dad is beautiful. Reg has been through a lot, and needs someone to care for him, the way he cares for the town.
The writing flows well and at a great pace, and the dialogue between all characters is excellent.
I am hoping that there are more stories from Wood Hollow to come.

We've back to Wood Hollow, Vermont, with lots of folks we've met in previous books. This time it's the police chief, Reg's turn at romance with the new mill shop manager, Waylon.

They meet when Reg pulls Waylon over for speeding, and it's instant attraction, although it takes a minute before both realize they are bi and available. Reg is divorced with 2 children (Rhys & Gretchen, who are major characters in the book). He's got a dad with the beginnings of memory issues and a mom who is trying to manage it. Waylon's got a sister in rehab and takes care of his nephew (Emmet) during the summer so his parents get a break. In other words, both have a ton of family drama going on, which makes it hard to get together.

They spend the majority of the book 'dating' and telling everyone they're not. At the end, Waylon moves on to manage another store and everyone is sad.....do they get their HEA? Of course they do.

Enjoyed this one a lot - plenty of spice, but also plenty of good plot. All kinds of interesting characters. Every book in this series has been a fun read.

Lane has once again written a lovely family based romance. I have really enjoyed the Four Forest series so far, mind I do love her books generally. She has an absolute knack for writing quirky characters who often feel like real people, and the dialogue and banter are always first rate.
In Mountain Man she gives us Reg, the stressed out single dad police chief, and Waylon, the ultra charming temporary lumberjack. Their no strings fling instantly turns into so much more, and the chemistry is seriously off the charts. What I also loved is that while, on the whole, it's a fun, low angst romance, it doesn't shy away from real life. It touches on some heavy stuff, handled with so much care, like Reg dealing with his dad's heartbreaking dementia (this one really hit home), and Waylon trying to support his sister while she desperately tries to stay clean for her kid.
But OMG, an absolute scene stealer is Waylon's nephew, Emmett. He's a total star and a complete ray of sunshine, who completely stole my heart! What a standout character!
Another delightful small town romance with a gorgeous silver fox, tons of laugh out loud moments, and so much heart. Thank you Lane, you never disappoint.

Thank you to Gay Romance Reviews for the ARC — this review is my honest opinion.

Tropes: Age-gap, Small-town, Lumberjack, Single Dad

Mountain Man is the third book in the Wood Hollow Stories series. Reg and Waylon are the main focus of this book. Reg serves as the sheriff in Wood Hollow. Waylon is new to town and has taken over as the manager of the local lumber company. Their meeting happens when Reg stops him for speeding.

This was such a good book. This was the first book I read in the series, and I'm completely hooked. Reg and Waylon had incredible chemistry. This was a very sweet story with hardly any angst. Lane Hayes did an excellent job creating the characters in this book. I adored Waylon's nephew. He was such an adorable addition. The moments with Reg's father and Waylon felt very heartwarming. Reg's kids were also a wonderful inclusion. I liked the way they were so supportive of their dad. Reg and his Mountain Man really deserved that happy ending. This is a must-read if you love a sweet (but still spicy) MM romance.

Sherrif Reg is a hot, sexy, single, dad of two who just pulled a guy over for speeding.
He never expected that the man who rolled down the window would become one of the most important people in his life.
Waylon was newish to town. A hot, sexy, single man who was working temporarily at the Mill. He had his adorable nephew in the backseat. He never expected that the Sherrif who pulled him over would change his life and his plans.
Now as per usual in Ms Hayes books, the heat level in these two men together is scorching hot. They try to not get too involved, try to keep their attraction a secret. However, they live in a small town and you know how quickly gossip, or truth can spread.
Now I am not going to tell all their secrets. That's up to the reader to discover.
So, buy, read and enjoy...trust me you will be glued to the pages and will require a fan, frequently.
You're welcome ;)
