Rate this book

Every Legend Has a Price. This Is the Tragedy of Africa's Greatest Warrior King.A boy is born in scorn—named after a disease fabricated to deny his very existence. Rejected by his father, hunted by his own tribe, he finds in the wilderness a sorcerer who never lies, never forces, and never Isanusi simply presents the prices and awaits the choices. From the first pact, an invincible warrior is born. From the last, an empire of blood—and the demand for a sacrifice no throne should ever cost. Before Chaka devoured the nations, an entire village devoured Chaka.

Written in Sesotho around 1909, Thomas Mofolo's Chaka remained suppressed for sixteen years by the missionary press that feared its power. It is the African Faust: a historical dark fantasy of Shakespearean proportions, crowned in 2002 as one of the twelve most important works in African literature of all time.
