Check out the second book in the scary middle grade series, Crooked Rock Legends. Best for ages 8+
SUMMARY Haley is a big science geek. She loves everything revolving around science like space, fossils, deep sea creatures, and even mummies. Haley's science teacher, Mrs. Bramble knows just how much she likes science, so she assigns her a project. She has to visit the local museum and write a brief summary on five things she finds interesting. Now, Haley and her friend, Jasper, are spending the day at the museum, so she can complete her assignment. But things take a turn for the worse when they find a live mummy!
I wasn’t a fan of the first Crooked Rock book, so I shelved the series for a minute. In my hiatus I figured my best approach would be to read the latest books in the series to see if the quality has improved, as book one was plenty of entries ago. Mummy Mayhem was my go-to as it easily has the best cover and is quite far out. Having read it, I can say that, at the very least, these books are properly edited now and have better writing, so that alone had sold me on these. The story here… pretty meh. I liked the revelations at the end but it was writing on the wall at that point, for it was beyond obvious. The mummy action is good and I enjoyed the characters, but the final act feels semi-underwhelming and rushed, and I wish there was more of an emotional tinge between Mr. Smith and Jasper. That felt like a leftover beat we never got and that’s a bit disappointing. Pace was fine, for the most part. Overall, 6/10. I enjoyed it and I’m glad it’s an improvement over the Cabin on the Cliff, so at the very least I’ll be more excited for the next book I read (probably Grow a Ghoul… that cover is so ass it’s charming lol). Mummy Mayhem indeed.
