Lucy longs for freedom, far from the Hazmat-suit-latex-gloved existence she knows. When supplies cease to exist, Lucy and her Mom leave on a mission to find The Light.

The Light is led by the Nobleman; born their prophet, he’s always carried that weight alone, until he discovers Lucy’s secret ability to hold light in her hand. Lucy's connection with the Nobleman bares The Light's dark motives, forcing her to decide between love and freedom.

I stopped reading YA dystopian trilogies for a while because I had read so many they all started to seem the same and I lost interest. So it's been a while since I read something of this genre and this did not disappoint. I couldn't put this down. It had everything I love about YA dystopian novels all with its own unique twist. I can't wait to read the next in the series.

I loved this book. There was a ton going on and always kept my attention. A YA dystopian read that twists and turns throughout. I liked knowing some of the backstory so we are not kept in the dark as well. I can’t wait to read the next in the series and see what happens to Lucy and what she learns.

Lucy was born the day the lights went out. A virus swept the world and very few are left in an unbreathable environment. She lives in a compound with her parents and a few others for the past 16 years. She can only go outside for a few minutes if she wears a hazmat suit and then decontaminates upon return.

There is no power in the world, no light. Her parents were “preppers”, having been scientists before the lights went out and have sustained their compound up until now. They are running out of food and planning the next steps. A rare stranger visits the compound and tells of breathable air and an existence outside of their dark sealed off bunker.

Lucy and her mom embark on a journey to find The Light, a refuge for women and children. The same stranger they saw at the compound helps lead them to the pickup point for The Light after giving Lucy a choice to come with him. She chooses The Light as her mother is adamant this is where she must go.

They reach The Light and learn it is run by men called Humbleman and their prophet, the Nobleman. Women are Vessels and each are assigned a job to do around their marble encased structure. Lucy doesn’t like their polygamist ways and how the women are treated. She wants out to live a life of freedom and explore the world she never thought she’d see. Until she meets the Nobleman and everything changes. He is full of light and Lucy holds a light of her own that she keeps secret and maybe the two can figure it all out.

"Lucy finds her way"
Would you consider the audio edition of Flicker to be better than the print version?
Yes, I really enjoyed Maren McGuire voice it brought the main Character Lucy to life.

What did you like best about this story?
Everything about Lucy. She is the only baby born in her group after a bio-apocalypse spread in the world. Her family and their friends live for 16 years in a fall out shelter. So we start in Lucy's life when she is 16 years old and they are just now running out of food. So we following along her journey into the new world. Lucy and her mother make it too another community that takes them in. As Lucy finds new friends and a new life. She is lucky enough to find someone to love in this new world.

Have you listened to any of Maren McGuire’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No I have not had the pleasure. She has a great talent for young girl voices. I would say a nice range from the sweet 16 year old Lucy to a snotty soiled teenage girl.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When Lucy tried to save her mother out of the punishment closet. I don't want to give it away but it made me cry.

Any additional comments?
I received the audio book in exchange for a review.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book.. loads of action, keep me interested though out! Definitely going to read the next one! I liked that it was a different take on other dystopian type books. Lucy was born the day the lights go out! Now 16 yrs later the are forced to leave their bunker, they have run out of food. They head to the only place that seems safe for women and children ..OK...but Lucy has a secret! Shall we call it a "Flicker" , I guess Anya Monroe did! Try this one..

Good book

Loved the story and the characters were really interesting. It was a story of a disease that decimated the world and a boy and a girl who were born just as the lights went out. Looking forward to reading the next one

Clever. It never ceases to amaze me how imaginative some people are. The story draws you in immediately and soon you find that you've neglected your life as you just keep turning the pages.

Coming of age as the light

An apocalyptic coming of age story about good and evil. However, t h e light is not what it seems. Darkness is the fear that controls everyone.
