None of his books had ever taught him this. No book ever told him what it was like to die.
Loren Turtingas would rather read about heroes than become one. His dream of a quiet life is destroyed when he's forced into an expensive academy where students gamble at the opportunity to unlock Guild abilities.
Amidst new program friendships and a budding romance, Loren discovers a terrifying gift he never wanted—the ability to extract very essence of life. This power connects him to the beautiful and mysterious Paerli, a girl who is far more than she seems. Her friendship is suspicious, her mission is ancient, and Loren is the unwilling key to unlocking a secret even the capitol fiercely protects.
Now, Loren must master his cursed abilities before the close friend he trusted costs him his friends, the woman he loves, and his own humanity.
I grew up in the Midwest in the 80s and 90s, often finding myself on the dirty low-pile carpets of Waldenbooks reading the newest Christopher Pike YA horror. I'm an avid lover of stories of all kinds, with a particular penchant for the things that go bump in the night.
An urban fantasy with a bit of science fiction! There is world building and guilds! This was a slow burn, but a fun ride from our OP going from living in the family basement to him discovering friends and adventures!
Reaper's Gamble is a unique world filled with unique powers.
The story follows Loren, nicknamed Lor, and can be broken into three parts.
The first part of the story is one of found family. Lor, lacking ambition and drive, is sent to a camp on a remote island where he finds camaraderie in his fellow campers. This was my favorite part of the book. As someone who still reminisces on those old Summer Camp days, R.E. Holding is able to really portray the feeling of these camp friends: Guys egging each other on to go talk to girls, camp romance, and the excitement of sneaking out at night and breaking rules.
The second part of the story is one of expectations as the characters move from camp back to the real world. They've grown up. They've seen things. And now, they have a job to do. The glamorous expectations of a life that comes with the powers they unlock at camp becomes much more drab as responsibilities pull different friends in different directions.
The third part of the book is one of betrayal. Maybe the friends we made weren't quite who we thought.
Author R.E. Holding explores this story in a world with history, conspiracies, and a "magic" system that seems much deeper than the author lets on.
I recommend reading this book if you are a fan of the summer camp days and found family.
Reaper's Gamble surprised me. Looking at the cover, I wasn't sure what I was getting into, but surprisingly enough, it was an interesting amalgamation of what I would call sci-fi, urban fantasy, dystopian, a bit of horror (just a smidge), and dare I say, a love story. Its pacing seemed odd at times, and the world-building was sketchy (however, the glossary I found at the end helped a great deal). But the story entertained me all day today as I read the book in one sitting. Learning about this odd world and the prejudices and social structure set the stage for the "school" Lor (our slacker hero) must attend to find his guild. In many ways, the world seemed like it could be the setting of an RPG video game. The Guilds' roles in society are the main classes your character would play. It even goes as far as potions or draughts made to heal, enhance, or destroy. This story is just beginning, and I see this pack of talented friends from different guilds (all having talents that help the group) having many adventures. Is it high literature? No. But is it fun? Yes, definitely!
Thank you, NetGalley, R.E. Holding, and Cliff Cave Books, for the eArc. I liked this book, and these are my opinions.
Such a unique story. I read a lot of books and I appreciate how different this authors stories are. She is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors.
The world building was interesting and left me intrigued . How did all that ancient tech end up on a beach? Was it from a war? I love a good ancient mystery, as long as we eventually get the answers.
I liked all of the characters, but found Damaetra a little too nice for her own good. I liked her, especially compared to Paerli, but felt she needed to assert herself. Nico was for sure my favorite of the group. I did have a bit of trouble pinpointing their ages. At first I figured 18, but then I felt maybe more like 15. Given the groups amount of romantic experience or lack thereof. I'm still not really sure though. I don't recall if it's ever stated.
The school is bizarre and I felt would have been better served with a little less mystery. Hopefully we'll get more clarification as the series continues. I suppose I feel that way about all of the unanswered questions. The author did a good job of leaving me wanting more.
The pacing was slow but not in a bad way. Not every story calls for fast paced action and/or drama. I had initially rated the book 4 stars, but found myself thinking about the story a lot after finishing it. That's precisely what a book should do, so I had to bump it to 4.5. As good as the writing is, it still needs a bit of polishing. I love all the mystery, but at times I did feel like I was thrown into a world that I knew nothing about and wasn't getting enough of the answers to form a detailed picture and narrative in my mind.
I can't wait to read the next book in the series and hopefully get some of the answers to my lingering questions. I highly recommend this book to those that enjoy sci-fi and fantasy.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
The names, characters, companies, organizations, locations, events, and incidents in the book are all fictional or products of the author's imagination, making it a work of fiction. Any likeness to real people, living or dead, places, or things is completely coincidental. Guide for the Non-Guild Faction of Law: Roundsmen is a dusty manual that Loren and his father find in a cellar at the start of the novel.
The characters are well developed and the storyline of this book is so on point. It is a lovely book.

Loren Turtingas is satisfied with his life the way it is, living in the basement of his stepfather and reading everything he can find on Roundsmen and Law to prepare himself for his career as one. However, Gale, Loren's stepfather, is disappointed in his laziness and disapproves of his career choice; therefore, after exhausting himself in persuading Loren to follow his sister Eva's footsteps and join the Guild Program to discover his gift, he forces Loren to go, giving him no say in the matter.
Despite Loren's reluctance to attend the program, he finds himself enjoying his time on Heart Island since, to his surprise, he makes friends the minute he sets foot on the island and the attention he receives from the two most beautiful girls in his class in spite of his introvert and reclusive nature. Yet fear creeps up on him and his friends after an unfortunate incident, while truths about their guild's new path slowly start to unfold.
R.E. Holding kept me captive while reading her amazing novel "Reaper's Gamble" with her talented writing style and the way she uses simple and comprehensive language to compensate for the invented terminologies she uses in her book. I find her attention to the small details in creating a whole new world very impressive. The development of characters can be easily noticed, especially with Loren, as he transforms from a lazy teenager living in his stepfather's basement to a caring, more mature, loyal young adult willing to sacrifice himself to keep his friends and loved ones safe.
My favorite part about this novel is the unpredictable way the author weaves the plot, which makes me unable to guess what will happen every single time, keeping me on my toes the entire time unable to see where or how it will end. Her writing skills shine through the book with how she strategically reveals critical information periodically that keeps the reader's full attention and enhances the suspense element of the book, which I find brilliant.
Another one of the things that caught my attention and I was looking forward to is the illustrations at the beginning of each chapter; besides how captivating some of them are, they help with imagining certain parts of the story. This is why I think adding a map to these illustrations at the beginning of the book to explain this fascinating world will help in imagining and having a better understanding of the path the characters take and the cities they mention in the story. I also think moving the index to the beginning of the book instead of its position at the end will make a huge difference as it explains many invented terms used in the book because its position can easily be overlooked.
My first impression of the book from the cover is that someone made a bad deal with a death reaper, which I find alright, although not very eye-catching, but after reading the book, I don't think it represents it well. Besides this, the only thing I dislike in this book is how there are some very obvious actions the characters should have taken a few times that they overlooked, which didn't make sense to me at the end of the book.
Other than that, I don't have anything else to comment on or add. The fact that the novel is fast-paced, full of action and suspense, besides being flawlessly edited without a single error, which is extremely impressive, means it will surely appeal to many readers. The absence of mature content and foul language is one of the other positive aspects for me that I truly appreciate, making this book suitable for young readers as well. For this reason, I will gladly recommend it to any fantasy and fiction lover.
"Reaper's Gamble: Of Black Sand and Ash" by R.E. Holding. The novel is set in Audun, a world where magic and intrigue intertwine. Audun is a place of secrets, hidden powers, and complex social structures. The author masterfully introduces readers to this realm, revealing its nuances without overwhelming them. From the bustling city streets to the mysterious Heart Island, Audun becomes a vivid backdrop for the unfolding drama. Our protagonist, Loren (nicknamed Lor), is a 16-year-old boy with a reclusive nature. He lives with his stepfather Gale on the outskirts of Audun. Unlike his sister Eva, who belongs to the Guild, Loren lacks ambition. His dream? To become a non-Guild roundsman of Law. Loren's internal struggle—between duty and desire, ambition and contentment—forms the heart of the story. When Loren is sent to Heart Island for the Guild program, his life takes an unexpected turn. Heart Island is both a training ground and a crucible. Here, gifted individuals hone their unique abilities, whether healing, combat, or something more enigmatic. Loren's initial reluctance gives way to curiosity as he makes friends, including Nico and Dill. These friendships become the bedrock of his journey. Enter Paerli Harea, a woman shrouded in mystery. Her presence disrupts Loren's world. Who is she? What secrets does she hold? Paerli's enigma adds layers to the plot, and her interactions with Loren are charged with tension. As Loren grapples with newfound attention and intrigue, he discovers that Heart Island holds more than just training—it harbors secrets that could reshape Audun's future. "Reaper's Gamble" defies genre conventions. It seamlessly blends elements of horror, dystopia, and science fiction. The result is a rich tapestry where magic coexists with technology, and danger lurks around every corner. The pacing keeps readers engaged, alternating between heart-pounding action and quieter, character-driven moments. Loren's transformation is palpable. From a lazy teenager living in Gale's basement to a caring, loyal young adult willing to protect his friends, Loren's growth is central to the narrative. His internal conflicts—personal desires versus societal expectations—resonate with readers. R.E. Holding expertly unveils critical information at just the right moments. These revelations enhance the suspense, leaving readers guessing and hungry for more. The unpredictable twists keep the pages turning, making "Reaper's Gamble" a compulsive read. In summary, "Reaper's Gamble" isn't just about magic; it's about choices, friendships, and the consequences of wielding power. While it may not fit the mold of high literature, its entertainment value is undeniable.
"Reaper's Gamble" by R.E. Holding is about you in such a mystical world of beautiful lines on paper that will carry you there forever. Loren, a young boy who is recruit into the Guild program on Heart Island without prior warning additional to this excursion makes him aware of his unknown talents and allows him to build new relationships some mystery behind Paerli Harea.
In terms of world-building, this novel excels; it is vast and small at the same time. Holding's detailed writing makes Heart Island come alive as an independent character. Loren has an ideal space for maturation embodied by the Guild programme with its own forms of challenges and opportunities, hence, enabling Loren’s development.
One of “Reaper’s Gamble” strongest points is character development. It’s fascinating and also provides a source of encouragement as Loren transforms from being somewhat opposed to getting there into someone who completely accepted it all with great ability. The diversity provided by Paerli Harea who has an unusual background and intricate personality serves to bring intrigue into the book while evoking the reader’s interest within them. There are well-crafted relationships; every fight contributes towards the grand narrative whilst building up character arcs in themselves
Its tempo is a good mix of swift and slow scenes, different from one another but nevertheless appealing to bookworms. Such an approach gives the audience a chance to take full grasp of these characters’ emotional and psychological selves. Furthermore, self-discovery, friendship as well as the dilemma of fate versus free will are themes that run throughout this narrative in order to make it more interesting and intense.
Fantasy lovers will find “Reaper’s Gamble” engrossing. I give such a book five stars out of five because I believe anyone interested in character-oriented fantasy with rich universe and incremental plot development
Reaper's Gamble: Of Black Sand and Ash is the first book in a YA fantasy series by R.E. Holding. Released 24th June 2024, it's 358 pages and is available in paperback and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout. For Kindle Unlimited subscribers, this book is currently included in the KU subscription library to borrow and read for free.
This is a young adult novel, emphasis on *young*. The characters are often immature and dangerously impulsive (and whiny), but overall, although youthful, the prose is honest and accessible. MC Loren is reluctant to venture out of his stepdad's basement, content to shutter himself away and plan for a life as a roundsman instead of being pushed to follow his sister's more traditional (illustrious) path.
Stepdad sends him to The Guild's (capitalization intentional) summer camp to push him, where he finds a group of friends and stumbles into a conspiracy which could have profound implications. There's a very summer camp vibe to the first third of the book. Everything is shrouded in mystery and it's not clear if that's 100% intentional on the author's part or if it's being figured out further on down the line in the series.
It's fairly well written, but not polished. There are good bones to the story, but it's not yet quite hit its stride. It'll be interesting to see how Ms. Holding develops the storyline further.
Three and a half stars. It would be a good choice for home reading, or a buddy read. It will appeal more to YA readers.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
"Reapers Gamble" by R.E. Holding is an enthralling urban fantasy novel that revolves around the life of Loren B. Turtingas. The story follows Loren, a young man navigating the expectations thrust upon him by his family and society. Caught between pursuing his passion for law and succumbing to familial pressure to join a secretive program aimed at nurturing individuals with special abilities, Loren grapples with his fate under the watchful eye of his stepfather, Gale.
R.E. Holding's evocative writing seamlessly transports readers into the world of Audun, deftly unveiling its complexity without inundating them with excessive explanations. The narrative strikes a perfect equilibrium between exposition and visualization, enabling readers to intimately engage with the multifaceted characters and settings. Throughout the story, the deep evolution of characters, particularly Loren, is unmistakable. From a lethargic teenager dwelling in his stepfather's basement to a compassionate, mature, and dedicated young adult willing to make sacrifices for the safety of his loved ones, Loren's transformation is profoundly captivating.
The book doesn't merely focus on the main character; each character is meticulously explored, adding depth and fascination to the narrative. One of the most captivating aspects of the plot is its meticulous construction. The author masterfully navigates the story, leaving readers in a state of suspense and sheer unpredictability, rendering it impossible to foresee the course of action or the ultimate resolution.
I found "Reapers Gamble" to be a delightful read and would wholeheartedly award it a five-star rating. I enthusiastically recommend this book to anyone who revels in the allure of fantasy literature and narratives centered on personal growth.
Reapers Gamble by R.E. Holding is a gripping urban fantasy novel centered on Loren B. Turtingas. Loren is a young man battling his fate and the obligations his family and society placed on him. Living under the close supervision of his stepfather, Gale, Loren struggles to decide whether to follow his passion for law or give in to family pressure and enroll in a mysterious program that is designed to identify and develop people with special gifts. As the story goes on, Loren faces many obstacles, learns about himself, and meets a wide range of people, each with their own secrets and goals.
I really like how R.E. Holding has developed Locksmith as a multidimensional character. Her dealings with her staff reflect a leader who is empathetic but brutal when required. This dichotomy makes her a compelling character to follow since you never know what she will do next. Her bond with Cricket is particularly noteworthy. Loren's journey is immensely relevant, particularly for readers who have experienced similar pressures to follow others' footsteps rather than pursue their own ambitions. I really loved the author's exploration of this issue through subtle conversation and the protagonist's reflective periods.
However, I wish there were more facets to Gale's personality. Understanding his past and objectives, as well as seeing a gentler side, may have deepened his connection with Loren and offered meaning for his actions. This novel will appeal to fans of fantasy and speculative fiction, as well as anybody who likes a well-crafted story of personal growth.
In the presence of ancient guilds and complex technologies, Loren is made to join a unique system to prove his skills. He wants to be a lawyer, but he has fear of what he may not accomplish, and this scares him because he has a feeling that his sister Eva shadows him. Interesting enough, there are elements of family, societal, and intrapersonal conflict depicting Loren’s vision of the unspecified future.
There is a use of descriptive words that bring out a clear understanding of complicated actions or visual scenes. The dialogues are well written, and one can sense the originality and genuine presence of the characters in the narration. There is nice pacing, and the tone is effectively moving from the internal to the external, start and stop, which is a good mix.
The combination of both highly technological and mystical aspects to the plot of the story makes it interesting and easily relatable. There are a great many other books in this genre, but it is much more lyrical and contains much more in-depth detail about the world and protagonist than other urban fantasy books.
I therefore recommend the novel for young adults and adults who have an interest in urban fantasies that intertwine magic and technology. It will also appeal to readers who prefer extra attention to the creation of the universe in which the characters live and focus on individual characters’ development and issues like personal identity, family roles, and social expectations.
R.E. Holding's captivating fantasy novel Reaper's Gamble immerses readers in a world of magic, intrigue, and dangerous effects of power. The story centers on a young man named Loren who is enrolled in a program designed to identify and develop each person's special skills. In the process of trying to find out how to utilize this program, Loren becomes entangled in a web of secrets, deceit, and a dangerous match with a strange woman named Paerli.
The author has a good eye for detail and a talent for crafting tense and emotionally charged moments. Her language is both vivid and approachable. The pacing of the story is well-balanced, with times of intense action and drama interspersed with quieter, character-driven moments that allow the reader to connect more deeply with the characters. The characters are well-developed, which is one of this book's most notable features. The main character Loren is likable and sympathetic, and his self-discovery journey and the issues he encounters are poignant and fascinating. The friendships between Loren and his friends—Nico and Dill in particular, whose commitment and companionship give the narrative depth and heart—are expertly crafted by the author.
"Reaper's Gamble" is an engrossing and masterfully written fantasy novel that I heartily suggest to those who value intricate world-building and detailed characters.
The book ‘Reapers Gamble’ is a fantasy novel that centres around the main character, Loren, who lives with his stepfather, Gale. Lor has his mind set on the law, but Gale has different plans for him. Wanting him to ascend to a level like that of his sister, Gale enrols Lor in the Guild program taking place at Heart Island, an isolated paradise in the proximity of Mount Gehenna, with the aim of unlocking his gift. This program is one of my favourite parts of the book, as Lor takes up camp life and more characters are introduced in the book, all of whom have a role in his story, one of them being Paerli, a beautiful girl and the first person he meets on his arrival. How will his life play out from here? Will he realise his guild, or will he fail and achieve his own dream of studying law?
One thing that really fascinates me is the different creatures introduced in the book, such as the Yeunish, Weggevens, and skin walkers, which gives room for exploring a different reality. I enjoy reading the book so much that I might have to reread it again at some point. It is fun reading the camp part of the book, as it feels very realistic and humane.
I have no criticism whatsoever about the book, as I enjoyed every bit of it, and I would recommend it to readers interested in young adult novels and fantasy.
There's no chosen one. It's a found-family working together!
Plot: 4📍 Spice: 0❤️🔥 Overall: 4.5 ⭐
This was such a fun, totally unique ride!
You had first love, boys growing into adulthood, finding their Band of Brothers in one another, magic (kind of!), intrigue, betrayal, and throughout it all, a young man becoming comfortable in his skin, falling in love, finding his talents...
What was especially unique about this story was the writing style itself.
You felt like you were listening to, hearing the inner thoughts of a young man, listening in and watching as he matures. And not just one, we get hints of other POVs, other personalities!
In a spot or two places this lagged a bit but not so much your start skimming. And honestly, with just how much amazing plot, story-building, world-building, character development is packed into this, I almost wonder if this could be split at a specific transitional point, and then expanded on... 🤔
Regardless, this was phenomenal!
Age-appropriate for a YA (aka, no spice, some hints of tension, a few mentions of make-out sessions, boys being a little crass and girl-crazy) so appropriate for your under 18 kiddos!
I'm very excited to see what comes next! What a cliffhanger!!!
Reaper's Gamble: Of Black Sand and Ash by R.E. Holding is a fascinating mix of horror, dystopian elements, urban fantasy, and science fiction.
Loren “Lor” B. Turtingas, the protagonist, is a 16-year-old boy living with his stepfather Gale on the outskirts of Audun. Unable to decide whether to enroll in the elite Peakwood Academy to develop his special "gift" or become a Roundsman, Lor struggles to find his place in the world.
Despite his reservations, Gale pushes Lor to join the Guild program on Heart Island. As he navigates the program, he encounters new friends, and secrets and risks abound, challenging Loren’s worldview and pushing him toward an unknown destiny.
R.E. Holding’s writing naturally immerses readers in the world of Audun, revealing its intricacies without overwhelming explanations. By finding a balance between telling and showing, the story lets readers get a closer look at the intriguing characters and setting. Each character has a lot of depth, and even the ones who first seem unlikeable end up growing on you. The slow process of falling in love with the characters, despite their peculiarities, is a highlight of this novel.
The pacing keeps readers engaged, and the seamless blend of genres adds depth. Holding creates vivid, memorable scenes with her compelling and effective prose. Long after the last page, readers will still be thinking about the story's layers as it explores moral ambiguity and the effects of decisions.
Reaper's Gamble: Of Black Sand and Ash is a YA dystopian fantasy story. The world building is detailed but we investigate the world from the perspective of the main character Loren who is largely ignorant about his society, including how powers and Guilds work. Because of this, there's a lot that we only understand by the end of the book - or that is left unexplained completely.
This book has a strong young adult feel because Loren is only now stepping out into the world and out of his father's basement. The students in the program become friends, roommates, or date each other. But it's all against the background of a sinister power system they're immersed in which is never explained to them. How do powers work? Who is in charge of the world? What does the history of their world have to do with the current system?
This book easily displays the fickleness of fate, wants and desires hold no say against it. Loren’s growth in maturity as he faces numerous trials and tests in the book was very interesting to watch especially when he had to take on the mantle of leadership. The book’s plots, though now being a puzzle to struggle with, were refreshing to read and easy to understand. Each character was well explored without leaving just the main character developed and that's a point I struggle with in most books but apparently not in this. I applaud the author for this well written work.
this was a strong start to this series, it had that element that I was looking for and enjoyed in this type of book. I enjoyed the overall feel of the story and it had that element that I was looking for. The characters worked well in the story and left me wanting to read more in this series. RE Holding has a strong writing style and am excited for more.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
R.E. Holding's style of story telling is the true star here. This is such a unique book! I don't think I have ever read something quite like it. It did drag in a few spots due to heavy doses of world building and I was a bit underwhelmed by the love interest, but otherwise it had some fascinating concepts. I am intrigued and ready to see what comes next.

Holding is a debut novel that immerses readers in the world of Audun and follows sixteen-year-old Loren Turtingas as he attends a prestigious school to discover his "gifts." Despite wanting to flunk out and become a roundsman, Loren is pushed by his stepfather Gale to join the program for a better future. The novel features rich character development, a detailed setting, and intriguing storylines, making it an impressive start for Holding in the fantasy genre. This book is recommended for fans of character-driven fantasy epics.
