When the Light Died: An Apocalyptic Mystery Thriller

Rate this book
The invitation was the honor of a lifetime. It was also a trap.

Clinical psychologist Marlene Richter is one of a thousand chosen — the world's brightest experts in every field, summoned aboard a billionaire's luxury liner for a voyage none of them fully understands.

Then the sky goes dark.

In an instant, the stars vanish. The sun is gone. The sea flattens, the wind dies — and their host does not seem surprised. He knew. He has known all along.

As the world outside falls silent and cold, a single set of coordinates becomes the passengers' last an empty stretch of ocean that appears on no chart, marked for no reason. But it is not the only secret aboard.

Why are the lowest seven decks sealed?

Why has every passenger received a private letter from the billionaire — and why will none of them speak of it?

And what, exactly, is waiting for them at the coordinates?

A thousand of the smartest people alive are trapped on the most luxurious ship ever built, sailing toward the end of the world. Some of them know why. Before the journey ends, Marlene will learn that the darkness swallowing the sky is not the thing she should fear most.

The light is going out. The answers are below deck.

Joshua T. Calvert has traveled the world--on foot, by Jeep, by bicycle, by motorcycle, and lots of other ways besides. As you might imagine, he's seen many things most people never see - including an Iranian prison cell, from the inside! In Kyrgyzstan, he fared slightly better, narrowly avoiding being kidnapped for ransom. Skydiver, scuba diver, martial artist, adventurer - his goal is to experience everything possible, and then make it real to you in his books. And he's made a good run of it so far: in the Philippines, he did police training on multiple types of firearms (despite being no fan of guns himself); dove in Asian waters among sharks and shipwrecks; and patrolled with Sumatran jungle rangers.

That's what defines Calvert's approach to method writing: pushing himself beyond his own limits, to experience first-hand what his characters experience, to make your immersion in his stories as deep as it can be.

For Ganymede Rises, after a slight detour with some smugglers in the deserts of Uzbekistan and the steppes of Mongolia, he traveled by dogsled and snowshoe to the Arctic Circle to experience first-hand what it's like to be utterly isolated in the coldest place on Earth. For his book The Fossil, he sat with professional pilots in flight simulators for Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft to learn what it's like to fly a passenger jet. His latest adventure: a parabolic flight with European Space Agency astronauts, to experience zero-gravity. All so he can describe it to you, in his own words.

I was very disappointed that it is not a complete novel. No storylines resolved...it just stopped, buy the next book. I am tempted; I liked the story a lot. But I can almost guarantee the second book is just more story with no conclusion. 5 stars for the story being interesting, but a little ding for a complete cliffhanger.

Cassandra's Dream Is A Nightmare (in the best way possible)...

When The Light Died, book 1 in the Ark series, is an immediately engaging and will keep you wondering just what is occurring as the sky turns solid black and questions about the boat, crew, situation and more mount. The writing couldn't be better, Marcus is a very complicated, dynamic, surprising and thoroughly believable. What really stood out for me was the psychology of the scenario and the different ways they try to cope with the unthinkable situation. Overall, 5/5 stars. Calvert has once again made the impossible into the highly believable. Highly recommended for fans is hard science fiction, sci-fi thrillers, disaster thrillers, apocalyptic survival thrillers and any reader looking for something different but superb!

Fast, entertaining apocalyptic mystery thriller
- A nice take on the whole “ARC conspiracy”
- Marcus was the standout: calm, capable, mysterious monk/meditator with a military background
- It’s nice to finally see a mysterious monk hero hit that
- Definitely one to discover — onto Book 2

I've been really enjoying this series and have found this third book the best so far. For shorter books, it's unusual for me to develop attachments to characters, but I have found myself growing attached to a handful of them. Moreover, the MacGyver contraptions the scientists concocted to thwart the Russians were far from being outlandish and could certainly be applied in such a scenario. That entire part of the book reminded me of the well-known quote by Alexander the Great:
"I am not afraid of an army of lions led by a sheep; I am afraid of an army of sheep led by a lion."

I have no idea what the final book will reveal, as there were more questions presented than answers in this book. I'm also on the fence about whether or not I think Marcus will truly break his vow and unleash hell on this Foreman character who seems to have zero empathy for anyone. I think ultimately that if the time comes when the life of one of these people Marcus has developed an emotional connection with is in jeopardy, he will do what needs to be done to eliminate the threat to them.

I think When the Light Died works best as a contained psychological thriller rather than a pure sci‑fi apocalypse story. The premise, the sudden death of sunlight is huge, but Calvert keeps the camera tight on the ship, letting dread build through secrecy, paranoia, and the claustrophobic setting.

The darkness is a backdrop, not the point, the cosmic event is terrifying, but the book’s real tension comes from the human element: the sealed decks, the letters, the billionaire’s knowledge in letters to the passengers. It’s less “How do we survive the end of the world?” and more “What did this man plan, and why are we here?”

Marlene is a grounded protagonist, using a psychologist as the lead is smart, she’s constantly reading people, noticing inconsistencies, and trying to understand the social dynamics of a thousand frightened geniuses. It gives the story a more cerebral tone.

Marcus Blackwell, who knows.

In closing, it’s atmospheric rather than explosive, if you like slow escalation, secrets, and the feeling that something is fundamentally wrong beneath the surface, this book nails that. If you prefer fast action or heavy science, this one leans more toward mystery and tension.

Overall, I’d call it a strong, eerie opener to a series that grows more intense and more overtly dystopian in book two (When the Light Failed).

This book takes on an experience beyond what you would expect. The author immerses you in the story through intriguing, suspenseful characters that keep you turning the pages. I had to keep reading to find out what happened, and I couldn't even guess what would happen next or why.
I love those types of stories, and this author is a pro at it.
There are a lot of characters, and I have to admit I am not good at keeping them straight, but the author was consistent with each one, helping me along the way. The character backgrounds and the suspense that most of the characters created kept the story keen and moving at a steady pace, keeping the reader engaged with every word.
The story is intriguing and creative, written with intense wonder that leads to constant questions of what exactly is going on, from every angle.
I really enjoyed this book, and I believe any sci-fi reader will enjoy it and read the sequels.

There's no doubt this novel needs an editor. Repetitive, clunky, lacking focus, and numerous poor plot decisions spoil a mildly interesting story.

The characters are ridiculous, becoming mere outlines of "nerd scientist", "military expert" and even the weird choice of comic relief amid a firefight.

The dialogue is awkward at best. Nonsensical in sections. The last straw is the abrupt ending with a plea to read the sequel. With no resolution on any of the plot lines, this first novel is a series of unnecessary filler and badly detailed action scenes.

Somehow I make it to the end, but honestly I skim groups of pages in the last few chapters. Don't waste your time.

The Night the Lights Went Out

Thoroughly original. I’ve always enjoyed Joshua Calvert’s books but I must say this has been my absolute favorite. Original characters, plots that went to places I didn’t expect. Many books follow some formula these days-not this one.

There is no casual sex, no scenes just to fill up space. Every page moves the book forward & I finished it so fast that I cannot wait for book 2 to be released. This is well worth the read. It really examines the dynamics of what people do when put in uncomfortable situations.

This book starts as a really gripping sci-fi thriller. A thousand scientists and other experts are invited by mysterious Marcus Chen to a cruise ship in the middle of the Pacific. Then the sky turns black. They discover that their expertise is meant to help them survive the next couple of weeks. But then what?

After a really interesting beginning, the book devolves in the last third into an espionage action thriller. I'm hooked, though, can't wait for number two.

Good story. More a mystery and thriller than scifi..right now. I think I'm liking it, but I wish it weren't a 3 part series. I'm not sure I feel like reading the next 2. I probably will and perhaps those 2 will make me think this is better than just 3 stars. Oh, towards the end, there was some hilarious and witty bantering between two of the characters. Maybe they will be around in the next 2 books.

Unique!y plotted dystopian story on a whole new level

This fast paced end-times story has everything and more. Great plot line rollout that sucked me right in, lots of questions popping, while giving us expertise and brief real-world scientific facts to layer plausibility, and fantastic character building at the perfect level to get readers invested and believing in the actors without bogging down the action.

It's not a book, it's a few chapters that lead to the second book. It's a lie. You wade (read) through this boring garbage only to reach the crest of a denouement that is basically "Same bat time, same bat channel". THERE IS NO RESOLUTION. Why can't you just put everything in one book instead of dragging it out? It's so lazy. No, I won't be continuing to the next book. Pretty sure the author will pull the same cheap trick. If that's how you want to write, fine. Take it to the Sunday comics.

Great Story

This is very intriguing and there are a few main characters who are dealing with a sudden lack of light and dont know why. The monk Marcus is intriguing. Since no one knows what happened or why. The people on the ship have to piece it together with incomplete information.

Great plot, kept evolving

This is my first book by this author. I just love finding someone new to read!

There is a huge range of characters in this story, and the plot keeps expanding exponentially.

It’s a clever and fascinating concept. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series. Bring it on!

one point of confusion

Great book, but early in the book it was established that Marcus Blackthorne, a type of Buddhist monk, was the only spiritual 'leader' on the Cassandra, but then a priest, Father Rodriguez, appears a few chapters later, also on the Cassandra. Seems odd; maybe he was supposed to be somewhere else? Made no sense. Perhaps the sequel will clear things up.

Complex Story and Interesting Characters

This was a complex story that i was able to follow. The characters are really well developed. I hope there is another book in this series with the same quality.

Great book

A really interesting story, not to far from being believable. A great cast of characters. This book had me hooked after the first page. I can't wait to start the next book. I recommend reading this to all that love science fiction.

Novel Concept!

I do a lot of online reading. This is the first "different" idea I've ever come across. The idea of losing not only sunlight but starlight as well is absolutely terrifying! Can't wait for the sequel!!!

DNF~about 3/4 of the way through book 1, it seemed like another writer stepped in and took over.
Repetitious descriptions…talked about the group being slick like soap (like 10 times), confusing storyline that got messy and hard/uninteresting to follow.

Good story, NO AI. I'm seeing a lot of sloppy AI books by authors on the genre but Mr. Calvert isn't doing that, thank you!

Finally found a sci fi that I could dig into. The characters are well depicted and the story intriguing. End of Book 1 I had no idea what was going on but was hooked.

Good concept, poor execution.

I despise cliffhangers, and consider them bait and switch.
