This volume is more esoteric. Despite having problems for Fronteras from the original novel left, the focus shifts to black magic, zombies, and hell knight threats. It leads to a lot of mana color swirls, exaggerated faces, and sound effects. However, the plethora of action panels makes the story a bit thin. I’m enjoying the running gags and Javier and Lloyd’s ongoing banter but the pacing feels a bit odd. (2.5 stars)
