SEA WITCH

Rate this book
Dr. Laura Martin, Chief Extraterrestrial Life Scientist at The Touchstone Institute of Oceanographic Research, noticed troubling but subtle changes in the Atlantic Ocean. Before she could make sense of it all, her longtime assistant abruptly walked out. Laura hired young, handsome Scott Conner to be her personal assistant. Mayhem ensued, mainly because of Zara, the mermaid/siren/monster in the basement of the Touchstone Institute, who eyed on Scott as her possible mate in a plot for total domination of planet Earth.

“The Touchstone Institute of Oceanographic Research is the most fantastic, exhilarating place on the planet to work. It is high energy, exciting, sometimes maddening, often frightening, heart pounding work. It’s not a job. It’s a lifetime commitment. It gets in your blood. It grabs you by the throat and possesses you, body and soul. And it is work. If you’re not prepared to work your ass off day in and day out, weekends, holidays, your birthday, and your mamma’s birthday, leave now.”

If you like romance with science fiction, you're going to really enjoy this. It's kind of like Men in Black but with USOs (Unidentified Submerged Objects) but the main characters aren't government agents, but scientists (but they definitely aren't afraid to use a gun or kill when necessary). I won't go into the plot because that would spoil things but you get some real twists thrown into here with two very human characters, who don't necessarily remain that way. And, yes, the romance is quite good once you get past Scott's immediate and complete infatuation.

The villain of the piece, Zara, even comes across as sympathic... well, as sympathetic as an man-eating alien she-beast can be. If I had one ding against the story it was Zara's wildly shifting emotions. In a lot of ways, it can be explained by the events in the story but it is very obliquely done. Also, even better, there are plenty of seeds in this story for a sequel and I really hope that happens.

This is a unique read, being a blend of science fiction with romance and a touch of mystery thrown in for good measure. The mermaid in this story is an alien and the last of her species kept in a special tank at Touchstone, a secure institute for the study of aliens. This is not the fabulous creature sitting on a rock, combing her hair and looking in her mirror while she sings to hapless mariners, she is much darker and way more dangerous.

Laura is the scientist in charge and everyone wants to work with her, including Scott, who though over qualified, begs her for a place. What happens next is unexpected and thrilling. Who will survive and who will not? A great read.

Carol Ann Kaufmann teams a scary, busy, and obsessed scientist, Dr. Laura Martin, with a young assistant in this Sci-Fi, romance tale. With a “Sphere-like,” background Dr. Martin looks for "ET" on the ocean floor. Could we have been invaded by mermaids from outer space? Gripping and fun, find out what happens in the Sea Witch.

I love how Carol Ann Kauffman writes her stories. Sea Witch is not a part of the Time After Time series, but it sure could be. She wrote the Sea Witch the same way, love and romance like no others. That feeling of they knew each other before, even though they didn't. The excitement of finding true love and being together. The way the characters intertwined, the loss of one of them, only to be found again. Awwwwwe! True Love!
Dr Laura Martin is the Chief Exraterrestrial Life Scientist at The Touchstone Institute of Oceanographic Research. Dr Martin is looking for a research assistant. She interviewed a few ladies and next was a man. She didn't want a man, she got along better with women. But her colleague told her to give him a chance.
Dr Benjamin Scott Conner, is up next for the interview and is excited beyond means. He has admired Dr Martin for a very long time and it's his dream to work with her, be next to her, love her and just have her in his arms. Well he didn't have a chance. She already had him kicked to the curb in her mind, but he talked her into giving him a 2 week chance, unpaid. She basically had no choice. Scott, that's what everyone calls him, was very over qualified and she asked to make him something more along the line of his degrees.
Now Dr Martin has an alien woman in a holding tank for 20 year and has mad a friendship with her. But when she sees Scott, the alien goes nuts screaming that he is her mate. He has no idea what she I talking about. Zara, the name given to the alien, becomes very hostile and has to be calmed with medication. Lara and Scott try to figure out what is going on and by talking about Scott's background, Lara has an idea how he is connected to Zara. To find out, they have to go to his Mothers home in France. This is where you hold on to the edge of your seat and hold your breath.
Sea Witch is an Romance with SciFi and mystery added in. What a great combination! I was trying to figure it all out along the way and was surprised, very surprised to say the least at the last few chapters. The ending was all science fiction and wrapped tightly with romance. What a captivating storyline! This author gas amazing talent!

This science fiction book turned out to be a very enjoyable read. Instead of traditional idea of aliens who step on Earth from space, this novel suggests intelligent creatures living under the sea. The fairy tales about mermaids must be coming from somewhere, right? With the two third of water on our planet it would not be easy for people to find and study those who live in the ocean. This makes the story believable, assuming that it is a sci-fi of course!

The main character, Dr. Laura Martin, is trying to study aliens found in the ocean. One of them, Zara, lives in the huge water tank in Laura’s lab in Touchstone Institute.

Everybody wants to work with successful Dr. Laura, and Scott is not an exception. He admires her work and, of course, admiration is close to love, so he is falling for her. But this is only a beginning of the story, which is full of unexpected twists and unpredictable surprises. For instance, who really Scott is? Why Zara reacts so strange on his presence? This riddle is for Laura to solve…
The book is fast paced and easy to read. The dialogues are very well written - the author has a real talent for conversations. The characters are likable and also well developed.

Though it was difficult for me to believe that Scott knew from the beginning that he loved that woman without any doubt. But who knows, may be not all the men are alike! It is up to the author “to create” a man who knows himself, capable to love and, finally, is able to save the world!

I definitely would recommend this book, it is an enjoyable sci-fi piece.

Exciting and Unique!

This story was definitely, as the title of the review says, exciting and unique! I've never read anything like it, and this is definitely for you if you like the realm of fantasy, adventure, and romance.

The reason I gave it four stars is because it's not poorly written, but it could have been better. The flow isn't as smooth as it could have been, the grammar and punctuation mistakes aren't everywhere but they are noticeable, and the character development is a little too much too fast.

Otherwise, what a great story! Definitely worth a read! :)

Aliens have been landing on Earth and Dr. Laura Martin has been studying them at The Touchstone Institute. There are strange things happening in the Atlantic ocean Which Dr Martin has noticed-but can't quite figure out yet. Then employees start quitting or just disappearing.

Needing an assistant she ends up hiring Scott Connor-after he worked for free for a couple of weeks to prove that he really would do anything and everything Dr. Martin wanted.

This book is (hopefully) more fantasy then anything else. The ending will leave you wondering what comes next--I certainly hope that Carol Ann Kauffman intends on making this a series!!

One step into the Touchstone Institute of Oceanographic Research and readers won’t want to leave. Dr. Laura Martin is in charge. She hires Scott Conner to help with the work, and all kinds of trouble happens. The tale twists science fiction, supernatural, romance, and humor in a wonderful tale for all to enjoy. This is just a great book by a wonderful author of so many tales.

The ocean always has intrigued me, probably dating back to the first time I opened a Jules Verne novel and stepped aboard the Nautilus. Now that I live in Florida, my fascination has become reality. Carol Kauffman’s “The Sea Witch” brought me a step closer to the mermaids and the oceanic secrets I have chased my entire life. This is a magical journey into the unknown. "Could it be?" the reader asks repeatedly. The author expertly blends romance with science fiction to woo and entrap the reader. The end comes too soon. I long to discover what is next for the fearless Dr. Laura Martin and the devoted Scott Conner.
