Buku ini sepertinya lebih untuk pembelajaran bahasa Inggris ketimbang menulis puisi. Buku ini mendorong pembaca supaya tidak ragu mengekspresikan diri dalam bahasa Inggris walaupun dengan kosakata yang terbatas. Saya pikir, memang dengan kosakata yang terbatas itu bisa muncul ungkapan-ungkapan yang unik. Contohnya, "enggak enak badan" jadi "my body is not delicious", how poetic is that? *getok.

Ada 238 writing prompt dalam buku ini yang terbagi ke dalam sembilan bab. Prompt-nya berupa pertanyaan. Bisa saja sih hasilnya bukan untuk puisi, melainkan entri jurnal biasa. Soalnya isi pertanyaan-pertanyaannya personal banget. Yang paling kena buat saya tuh pertanyaan-pertanyaan di chapter 6.

Saya sempat penasaran dengan prompt semacam ini sebagai pemantik untuk latihan menulis. Namun sekarang saya menyadari bahwa saya enggak suka menjawab pertanyaan semacam itu, karena perlu pemikiran yang mendalam dan makan waktu yang bisa sampai lama hingga mendapatkan jawaban dan menguraikannya. Lebih prompting memang kalau pertanyaan-pertanyaan itu diberikan sebagai PR di kelas dengan guru yang akan mengeceknya dan murid-murid lain menjadi audiens hasilnya. Maksudnya, dengan begitu akan lebih memaksa untuk mendapatkan jawaban. Kalau dilakukan secara mandiri, tidak selalu ada motivasi.

Jadi saya membaca buku ini sekadar untuk meninjau isinya kayak bagaimana. Namun, untuk saat ini, saya belum merasa ingin mencobanya. Saya terlebih dahulu ingin mencoba ide mengurai dari satu kata random serta gambar-gambar dalam bahasa Indonesia, ketimbang menjawab pertanyaan-pertanyaan personal dalam bahasa Inggris. Saya lagi enggak mood belajar bahasa Inggris soalnya, huehuehue *ketawa orang Brazil.

This is a GENIUS book that offers a new way to teach English. I love this book for many reasons – the beautiful Japanese art, the hundreds of thoughtful questions/writing prompts (good for anyone, really, in any language – it’s about thinking and expressing yourself), but most of all, the concept. For learning a language doesn’t have to be boring or hard – it can be interesting and engaging, as we see here. Lisa Doctor brings her years of experience to the world with this book – and I am grateful. This book? It can change the way we teach languages. It’s that powerful. Highly recommended.
