The Sin of War

Rate this book
Death has touched every corner of Knightdorn, and the final remnants of hope that Elliot and his companions clung to have been extinguished.

With wyverns and a vast army at his side, Walter stands ready, awaiting his new ally’s arrival in Elmor for the final battle. The downfall of his enemies has never felt closer.

Meanwhile, a broken Elliot struggles to return home from Kerth, battling the tempestuous Sea of Men. At the same time, the united armies of Elmor and Sophie receive grim news about their leaders. Wirksworth is no longer the haven it once was—the balance has tipped, and the outcome of the war now hangs by a thread.

The shroud of war is poised to fall once more over the Age of Men, sending countless souls into the hands of the God of Death. This penultimate volume of The Dance of Light will decide the fate of every creature in Knightdorn and Kerth.

The Sin of War is the penultimate book in the crushing and powerful series The Dance of Light.

I won’t lie. This series took a much different path than I had set up in my mind after book one. What started out as a good yet standard fantasy has grown into such a dark epic.

The gruelling toll this war between essentially the forces of tyrant Walter and the heroic knight Elliott has hit staggering heights.

I’ll say this for the author. He is not shy at handing out devastating hardships to his heroes.

Some of my favourite scenes are at sea which is so reminiscent of all the great Greek epics.

As always a great cast, lots of surprises and incredible imagery through his writing.

Another fantastic installment. Can’t wait for the finale!

Thanks so much to the author for providing this ARC.

The Sin of War is exactly what it promises to be: devastating, brutal, and a reminder that in war, absolutely no one gets out untouched.

By this point in The Dance of Light, the stakes are enormous, the alliances are shifting, and the line between hope and complete destruction is getting thinner by the page. Kontaxis doesn’t shy away from the cost of war, and this instalment leans heavily into the suffering, sacrifice, political manoeuvring, and emotional damage left in its wake.

I loved the scale of this world and the sheer amount of mythology, armies, creatures, and competing powers at play. There’s something incredibly immersive about the way the story continues to expand, while still keeping the focus on the people caught in the middle of it all. The writing paints some truly epic imagery, and the sea-focused sections in particular were a standout for me.

That said, this definitely feels like a penultimate-book setup in places. There’s plenty happening—betrayals, shifting allegiances, heartbreak, and major developments—but it’s more about positioning the pieces for the final confrontation than delivering the explosive payoff I was desperately waiting for.

Still, Kontaxis has created a series that has grown increasingly dark with every instalment, and I’m fully invested in seeing how this all ends. After everything these characters have endured, I NEED to know whether there’s any light left at the end of this dance.

Bring on the finale.

Αφιέρωμα σε εγχώριους/ες συγγραφείς λογοτεχνίας τρόμου & φαντασίας
(Μέρος 5ο)
Το αμάρτημα του πολέμου

Για το 5ο μέρος του αφιερώματος/βιβλιοπροτάσεων για το Halloween (κι όχι μόνο) επέλεξα να σας προτείνω το 4ο μέρος της σειράς βιβλίων επικής φαντασίας ''Ο Χορός του Φωτός" του συγγραφέα Γρηγόρη Κονταξή, με τίτλο ''Το αμάρτημα του πολέμου", το οποίο κυκλοφορεί από τις εκδόσεις Οσελότος. Έχοντας διαβάσει και μείνει ικανοποιημένη από τα προηγούμενα βιβλία της σειράς, δε γινόταν να αντισταθώ και να μην διαβάσω και το παρόν. Βλέπετε, ο συγγραφέας έχει ''χτίσει'' ένα κόσμο φανταστικό που όμως είναι τόσο πειστικός και αρκετά γοητευτικός ώστε να τον προσπεράσω τόσο εύκολα. Άραγε, τί μας περιμένει σε αυτό το αναγνωστικό ταξίδι;

''Ο θάνατος έχει σκεπάσει κάθε γωνιά του Νάιτντορν, ενώ ακόμα και η τελευταία ελπίδα του Έλιοτ και των συντρόφων του, έχει πια χαθεί. Ο Γουόλτερ περιμένει τον νέο του σύμμαχο να πλεύσει στο Έλμορ για την τελική αναμέτρηση, έχοντας τα γουίβερν και έναν μεγάλο στρατό στο πλευρό του. Το τέλος των εχθρών του πλησιάζει πιο πολύ από ποτέ· παράλληλα, ο καταρρακωμένος Έλιοτ πασχίζει να επιστρέψει στην πατρίδα του από το Κερθ, διασχίζοντας την αγριεμένη Θάλασσα των Ανθρώπων. Την ίδια ώρα, ο ενωμένος στρατός του Έλμορ και της Σοφί μαθαίνει τα νέα για τη μοίρα των ηγετών του· η Γουίρκσγουορθ δεν αποτελεί πλέον γι’ αυτούς το ασφαλές καταφύγιο που ήταν, καθώς οι ισορροπίες έχουν ανατραπεί, και το πεδίο της τελικής μάχης είναι πια μετέωρο. Το πέπλο του πολέμου ετοιμάζεται να απλωθεί για ακόμα μία φορά στην Εποχή των Ανθρώπων, στέλνοντας αμέτρητες ψυχές στα χέρια του Θεού του Θανάτου." (Από το οπισθόφυλλο)

Book Review - A Sin of War

Rating 8.5/10 ⭐️

Gregory Kontaxis has firmly established himself as one of my favourite authors with his A Dance of Light series.

Whenever a new release lands in my mailbox, I find myself dropping whatever I’m currently reading and jumping straight back into this world. That probably tells you everything you need to know about how invested I am in this series.

As you would expect from being four books deep into a five-book series, this is going to be a non-spoiler and completely honest review.

This book delivers exactly what I’ve come to expect from A Dance of Light — dark, devastatingly brutal, and completely unafraid to put its characters through absolute hell.

At this point in the series, the stakes are incredibly high. Alliances are shifting, loyalties are being tested, and that small glimmer of hope seems to get thinner with every passing page.

Kontaxis doesn't shy away from the devastating cost of war either. This instalment leans further into the characters themselves, with more internal dialogue giving us a deeper look into their thoughts, fears and motivations. With everything they’ve been through, it makes for some genuinely compelling character work.

One of my favourite aspects of this series continues to be the sheer scale of the world. The mythology, armies, creatures and competing powers have grown enormously across the books, and yet the story never loses sight of the people caught in the middle of it all.

There’s something incredibly immersive about watching this world continue to expand with every instalment.

That said, this is definitely a setup book.
There is plenty happening, but it feels like Kontaxis is carefully moving all the political and strategic chess pieces into position, ready for the final move. The board is set, the pieces are in place, but we’re not at the endgame just yet.

That’s coming in the series finale.

And after everything that has happened so far, I genuinely have no idea how this is all going to play out.

Kontaxis has created a series that has grown progressively darker with every instalment, and I’m completely invested in seeing where he takes it. Four books in, and I’m still desperate to know how these characters, this world, and this story are ultimately going to end.

Now comes the hardest part…
Sitting patiently and waiting for the final book.

Review of advance copy received from Author
August 9, 2026
**I received an E-ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest read and review**

“The Sin of War” is book 4 in The Dance of Light series from Gregory Kontaxis, and what has up to this point, been an extremely strategic and dark dance, bringing with it very little light, mountains of sorrow, endless loss and dashes of hope… you can imagine what's in store for us readers in this sinful addition to Gregory's epic story of power, fate, war and sacrifice. 😈

This review may read a bit mixed, but that's just how I kinda felt as I concluded this read. I have quite enjoyed this series to date and Kontaxis has been thrust onto my reading radar for some time now…so needless to say, when I received my advanced copy of book 4, I quickly put down my current read to dive back into the dark and war ravaged lands of this series. Knowing exactly what we have endured so far, and completely expecting more…if not worse, with the title boasting “The Sin of War” I prepared for brutal chaos! 🔥

Here's where I was torn. The book absolutely holds the strong moves of a high stakes chess match, with armies and allies spread across this vast world, and detailed battle plans laid out for strategy and survival. Torment, heartbreak, anger and envy once again holds the weight of the story …but I felt like I would have gotten more of the action, revenge, rebuttal and well … progression that typically comes in this series with each entry. There was a lot of development with characters, alliances, placement and faith, but almost none of this felt like it moved much towards any sort of climax? Maybe I was just putting more expectation on this entry than Gregory intended to write, and this is just what I felt I read…a set up entry to what would be a wild, and action filled book 5! Not unheard of in a series that spans multiple books and covers as much land as Dance of Light does…so yea, another good read in what has been a great series… I just felt I'd get a little more story progression than I was left feeling at the end of this read. 🤔

Elves, Mermaids, Wyvern and Pegasus fill the pages and remind us of the awe Kontaxis can craft. Men battle with and against them all, with the help of powers only welded by the gods, and weapons that perhaps should have never been possible. Hatred, vengeance and fury seem to be leading us into a final battle that will require forgiveness, faith and sacrifice before we see this game of power and fear settled. I wished all the movement and dialogue yielded a bit more progression and action, but as with Elliot and his allies, I suppose I must show a little patience and let the author's pace and decisions guide us to what looks to be a “dance” of power that “lights” this Saga with an epic ending. 📚

3.5⭐ Even with the stagnant pace I felt the story left me with, the characters and world building still kept me engaged and flipping through the pages. Long Arm and Velhisya were still my fav chapters… and Elia stole my attention for many pages as well. Depending on your allegiance to characters, you may need to once again forgive Gregory…you know how he loves to destroy your emotions, and this entry is no different. 😤

This is another truly dark installment to Kontaxis' Dance of Light series. If you didn't think the author could go darker, make the story hurt more, you'd be wrong. The author takes you on the darkest night of the soul for many characters, and finishes with an ending that makes you eager for the next book.
