Two thumbs way up!

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel by Alex Sigmore. The character of Hale is someone that a reader can get behind and hope for the best. And, who doesn’t love a dog for a sidekick?!

Avery McHale is supposed to be hiding—not investigating murders. Unfortunately for anyone hoping she’ll quietly mind her own business, that doesn’t seem to be in her DNA.

Living under the name Hale Hastings after being framed for her mentor’s murder, Avery becomes involved in the seven-year-old disappearance of Lexi Tate. What begins as a cold case takes a disturbing turn when Lexi’s body is discovered, revealing something particularly disturbing about what happened to her. The reason behind it is both chilling and unusual.

PI Kenna Scott is a character I warmed up to, and then there’s Rogue—the wonderfully persistent, sometimes naughty Cane Corso who spent years breaking out of foster and adoptive homes and always heading south. No one quite understood this peculiar behavior until Avery decided to find out why. I loved this part of the story.

There are really two mysteries at work: Lexi’s murder and the much larger question of who framed Avery. While Avery digs into one, the other continues lurking in the background—and clearly isn’t going away anytime soon.

Excellent start to a new series. I’ll definitely be continuing with Avery, Kenna, and hopefully plenty more Rogue!

What is a Cane Corso?

Alex Sigmore and Ash Mercer write up a storm together. In Her Bones, the first Hale Hastings mystery, steps right up to the plate with a team of strong, female protagonists.

In this book, the word mystery is ubiquitous. Hale is on the run from her FBI job; she first lives with a bartender/forger; and ends up helping solve crimes in the background.

Sigmore and Mercer complement each other in combining their writing skills. In Her Bones is a powerhouse mystery with characters you can swiftly identify with and feel for their situations.

I especially liked the slow-burn enemies-to-friends environment that swirled around the main characters. I'm going to enjoy this new series, albeit impatiently. Another 5-star book from Alex Sigmore and friends.

Enjoyable series starter

The Hale Hastings series is off to a strong start with this book. The characters were interesting and their relationships were intriguing. the setting was a useful combination of small town but close enough to a metropolitan area so that it is not totally isolated, The major and minor plotlines were engaging, and they were also free enough of gaping holes that would be difficult to dismiss. Also, the story moved along at a pace that made putting the book down a challenge. I'm definitely going to continue on with the series.

SLIGHTLY DISAPPOINTED!

Honestly, I am let down by the writing and pacing. Alex Sigmore has been one of my favorite mystery authors since their earliest books. The beginning was so slow that all I could notice in each line was Avery’s repetitive lament about her situation, which I thought dragged on too long. I only started to enjoy the book once Rogue was found. After that point, I liked it.

It was a little slow getting started and then it picked up. I like Hale and I will read number two. Sometimes it takes a bit to really get into a series. We will see when I read book 2 in August when It comes out,

What the...

This certainly was not an Alex Sigmore type of ending to a story. I felt like I just fell off a cliff. A no ending end is the worst. Good story but now comes the wait.

Great book

Loved this book it has lots of intrigue and mystery. FBI agent hidden from the FBI, you can't get more dangerous than that. Then she gets involved with a cold case, and may blow her cover. If you want a great book read.

sort of slow

This didn’t keep me engaged as much as Sigmore’s other mysteries. I read to chapter 7 lost interest and jumped to last 3 chapters to see how it ended. Not impressed. Sorry.

Average

Just not quite as engaging as other novels I've read recently. I found myself wanting to finish it so I could move on to another author which is never a good sign.

Received as an ARC, this is an honest review.

For Hale Hastings, her life and career as becoming an FBI agent was goin as it should have... until everything was shattered, leaving Hale no choice but to hide within a small town and pray the FBI she wanted so much to a part of - won't find her until the bizarre, dark trajectory that's hunting Hale can be laid to rest. While Bend, Oregon isn't all that terrible... yet working where Hale does, can't stop Hale from wanting out this purgatory existence.

Thr one morning when Hale overhears about a missing hand, the itch to want to investigate the mystery surrounding Lexi Tate tests Hale's resolve as she works the case from the shadows; when Hale finds her secrets caught in the cross hairs of no nonsense P.I. Kenna, she believes it's the end of the line for life; it's what Kenna can do through her job that's key to solving what happened to Lexi Tate... along with one persistent dog that holds a terrible truth to why a vibrant woman had to die and leaving behind the one clue that'll save another life her killer is waiting to claim.

In Her Bones begins a highly addictive series from Alex Sigmore and Ash Mercer - his partner in crime.

Highly recommended.
