Introducing Emma Lawson—an unlikely hero to cheer for!
The body shot and killed in the early morning hours by the Sacramento River would have been an easy case for Detective Alibi Morning Sun to solve, if only his prime suspect weren't already in jail. Across town, Emma Lawson, California's youngest lead government ethics investigator, is enjoying a rare day off to help her best friend, Kate, prepare for the opening of her new business, Rainbow Alley Preschool, when amidst a hail of gunfire, Kate’s 15-yr-old son, Luke goes missing. As Alibi gathers new evidence to determine the identity of the riverside killer and Emma desperately searches for Luke, the two investigations collide. At the heart of both is a diabolical plot with stakes Emma could never have imagined. Will Emma and Alibi be in time to to stop a calculating killer whose plan threatens all that Emma holds dear?

Jess Lourey, Amazon chart-topping author, says: "All That Fall has everything I look for in a thriller!"

About UNDER A BROKEN SKY:
In this Sacramento-set thriller perfect for fans of Meg Gardiner, ethics investigator Emma Lawson uncovers greed and deception for a living, but this time is different. If only she knew this killer can hear her. He can see her.
One year into her prized role as the youngest ethics investigator in California's history, Emma suspects corruption in the state's billion dollar expansion to train travel. That unwittingly puts her on a killer's trail—a killer who will do anything to reach his illicit million dollar payday, including personally eliminating Emma as a threat.
Detective Alibi Morning Sun sees connections where no one else does. For him, a drowning at a lake, a fire in a storage facility and a murder by the river carry a thread soaked in blood.
As Emma follows the money and Alibi traces bullets and bodies, the killer counts down to his grand finale. With each mounting danger, it quickly becomes apparent that the corruption Emma has been digging for is real— and it’s deadly.

Brianna Labuskes, best-selling author, says: "Under A Broken Sky is a suspenseful, emotional page-turner should shoot to the top of everyone’s must-read list!”

One Murder More I love a good murder mystery and have not heard of this author, I am the type of reader that loves to read something new and refreshing from either a new author or one that I have never heard of. The story starts out with "Maren Kane could barely make out the yellow dividing line a few feet in front of her through the thick, grey valley fog." Ok so that sentence had me thinking that something bad was going to happen. Sure enough Maren witnesses an accident on the dark road. She gets out to investigate and finds a car overturned in a drainage ditch full of water. She sees that there are two children in the backseat, upside down and the driver in front. Another person, turns up to help her rescue the children, however, nothing can be done for the woman who was the driver.  Maren is a lobbyist for a California toy company and knows many people in the local government because of her role. She spends a lot of time in the Capitol and as such she knows a young woman, a legislative aide who is found murdered, by Maren actually, and finds herself involved in the murder investigation. A colleague of Maren's is eventually arrested for the murder as there is incriminating evidence against this young man. What ensues is a race against time as Maren tries to prove that her friend did not do the crime. To have two deaths that she came upon in one day is certainly weighing on Maren, and as time goes by the reader finds out that the two cases are connected. Maren disagrees with the police in that the murder of the aide is a crime of passion but Maren will do all in her power to see that her friend is released. She has a theory but she needs to find evidence that the police will believe. This murder mystery is a fast paced enjoyable read with a story that could very well be in the headlines, a believable tale about corrupt lawmakers who will do anything it takes to further themselves and their careers. If you are looking for a good story, then give this one a try! This is the first book in what looks to be a great political series. I received a copy of the book for review and was not monetarily compensated for said review. - See more at: http://www.celticladysreviews.blogspo...

I am always attracted to a new author. I like to explore their first offering. Usually they put it all out there. They want to make a big splash, so they throw anything that they can think of into their first book. Sometimes that works, and sometimes you wonder if they even had an editor. If the author can write, and they have someone to help them reign in their imagination, then it can be a wonderful experience.

One Murder More is one of those debut novels that are a pleasure to read; for the most part anyway. Ms. Calvin does know her way around California politics and can write about the stories and the people involved in passing legislation in Sacramento. She has no problems spinning an interesting and exciting story. She has written an entertaining mystery with enough tangles and wrong turns to keep you puzzled until the very end. My only problems with her book had to do with her characters.

I know that this takes place in California, and people who live in California are different from the rest of us, but there were just too many names for the characters in this book that confused me. I kept thinking that these people were males when they were really females. It just interrupted the smooth flow of the story. I had to keep thinking, “Is Sal Castro a woman? What about Senator Rickman, and Wallis Lisborne?” Not to mention the main character, Maren Kane. But maybe that was just me. It does make reading much easier if you don’t have to stop and think about a person’s sex when you read their name.

The other character issue had to do with all the weird people in this book. Now don’t get me wrong, I like books with a few odd characters. They add that quirkiness that make a story fun. But it seemed like nearly everyone was too over-the-top, either that or they were drop-dead-gorgeous. Hopefully Ms. Calvin will be able to continue bringing us interesting characters, but just bring in a few more normal people. But then again, her book is set in California, and maybe those folks qualify as normal out there.

On the whole, One Murder More was a very enjoyable book, and I was glad that I had a chance to read it. I think that the characters and sub-plots of the book would appeal to women more than men. I liked it, but I think my wife will like it even more. It wasn’t quite Chick-Lit, but it was close.

I give One Murder More 4 Stars out of 5 and a Big Thumbs Up! If you think that you might like a fast-paced mystery novel steeped in political atmosphere with a bunch of quirky characters, then this book is perfect.

I received a hardcover copy of this book from the publisher.

In this intriguing political mystery, a legislative aide is murdered at the California state Capitol.
Maren Kane, a lobbyist for a toy company, is trying to get a bill passed with much resistance from many politicians. She becomes involved in trying to solve the murder when a close colleague is arrested for the crime. Her life is threatened and her brother is almost killed trying to save her. Maren continues to look for the killer and almost loses her life, putting those close to her in jeopardy.
She makes some shocking discoveries about power and greed in the world of politics.
I really enjoyed this book and found it to be very entertaining. I received it from Goidreads in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed this book from GoodReads. Maren Kane is a lobbyist for a manufacturerer of children's ecofriendly, safe toys. The author Kris Calvin integrates political intrigue, being vegan, ecology, and (best of all in my estimation) dog care, rescue, and rehabilitation without ever getting "heavy" or "preachy". These issues are merely threads lightly woven into the mystery of killings that Maren comes upon and solves. I liked the hint of humour, the fast pace that held my interest. My sole problem? The names of the characters were similar to those used in romance novels, which were a slight turnoff for me.

I found this to be a great debut. It held my interest from the start to finish. I look forward to reading the next Maren Kane Mystery. I'm not normally into political thrillers, but this wasn't bogged down in a lot of the politics. It did refresh my memory on some things that I've forgotten about how bills get passed and the hobnobbing that goes with some of them.

Ms. Calvin did a great job starting this new series.

I'm giving my honest opinion in exchange for this book that I won on First-Reads.

I really enjoyed this book!! I am not much into politics, but I do like political thrillers/mysteries, and this one did not disappoint.
I enjoyed getting to "know" Maren, but one small sticking point for me was trying to figure out her age. One incident in her life that was mentioned occurred when she was 11 and happened 16 years ago, which would supposedly make her 27, but when you read what all she's done; got a degree in economics and forensic psychology, taught art in a high school, got a law degree and is now a lobbyist, it just doesn't compute. Plus her younger brother is a Ph.D with tenure. This sounds more like closer to 40. However, this is just one my weird quirks (trying to figure out the age of the main characters) and did not detach from the enjoyment of the story.
This is the start of a series, and I look forward to reading more.

One Murder More is a smart, riveting, and on point political mystery that takes twists and turns you will not see coming.

Review Banner

There is something about a well crafted mystery that sends chills down my spine and puts a smile on my face. The elements all have to be there and if you are mystery lover, you will know what I mean. True mystery and suspense readers sit sit down with a book and have mental check lists of what they want. Even if you don’t think you do this…you do. We all want intrigue, the red herring, and the gasp moment with the reveal of the killer. After all, this is why you are reading this genre, right?

In Kris Calvin’s debut novel, the author exceeded my expectations and gave me a mystery that left me wanting more. Within the first few chapters, we meet Maren Kane, a lobbyist, whose world is shaken my two tragic events. Not only does she witness a car crash, but she is also the one to discover a murder victim in the California's Capitol building. When a murder suspect is put into custody, Maren is compelled to fight for his innocence. This is not only because she is friends with him, but also because things just don’t add up. As the mystery develops, we see Maren put herself and those she loves in danger. Is she getting closer to freeing her friend? Is everything as it seems? These are all questions that you will be asking yourself. All I will tell you is that you will be hit with some situations that you will expect and then a whole lot of “where the hell did that come from” moments.

What pulled me into agreeing to read this book is the fact that it is the first in a series. I love discovering new characters that I can embrace from the start. What kept my interest was the writing and level of intrigue that the author kept throughout. It is only natural that the first book in the Maren Kane Mystery series, there was a lot of introduction to the characters, the political landscape and, of course, to Maren. However, it was never boring. The author developed the characters right along with the mystery so seamlessly. In fact, at times, the author would jump perspectives to the other characters. Though this could have been very odd or confusing, it really helped the novel by creating a well rounded picture of the environment that our lead “sleuth” is in.

From the first page to the last sentence, I was enthralled with this book. I wasn’t sure what I was going to get, but it really delivered. One Murder More is truly a great start to what will no doubt be an amazing series by Kris Calvin.

Set in Sacramento, California 'One Murder More' introduces us to Maren Kane, a lobbyist for an environmental toy manufacturer.

The book throws us quite literally into a drainage ditch within a few paragraphs and starts with a good jolt you want from a thriller - political or otherwise!

But whilst this accident appears to have no bearing on the story it turns out that Maren just happened to be in the wrong place at the right time, as the incident enables her to start to piece together the motive behind the killing.

The plot revolves around Maren and her discovery of a dead body - a beautiful dead body - that of an up and coming legislative aide who she finds stabbed to death in California's Capitol building.

Then her friend and former house guest is arrested for the murder, in a suspected crime of passion, a lover spurned, something Maren disbelieves and taking note of a snatched conversation between her friend and the victim and her feeling that politics, power and money are a bigger motivator for murder, she sets out to prove he wasn't involved.

This leads to a mix of politics, love, financial dealings and friendships being tested as she gets closer to the truth so the killer comes to making her their next victim.

Whilst the book centres on the U.S. State legal system that can take time to comprehend if you're not acquainted with it, it becomes easier to figure out as the story progresses as the author has taken care to add details to help guide the reader including Schwarzeneggers time as governor. There is also a heavy thread regarding the role of lobbyists and their overtly upfront tactics, something that is an almost alien concept to many legal systems, but again handled well, avoiding too much information overload.

Overall the book is a good page turner, with some nice twists, misdirects and humour to keep you entertained. Kris Calvin clearly knows her stuff when it comes to the California legal system and the corruption that lies just underneath ready to blow up at anytime.

It's a smart, intelligent novel with some great characterisation that you can believe.

One Murder More opens with lobbyist Maren Kane witnessing a car going over the embankment and into a lake. With another passing driver, she frees the two small children from the backseat. Checking for a pulse, it is obvious their grandmother is dead. Little does she know that it is only the first death of her day. And of her month!
It is obvious that Kris Calvin has lived in the Sacramento area for many years during her career as a political advocate for children. The descriptions of the different neighborhoods, routes, and restaurants, combined with a few behind the scenes stories of the Governor’s office and capitol hill habits give the reader a picture of a diverse and friendly city. Her explanation of the passing of a bill and the work that goes into it are easy to understand, yet more complex than many people realize.
The bodies keep piling up and Maren’s friend is accused of stabbing his former girlfriend, an aide to the Governor. Maren meets with state Senators and other lobbyists while trying to gather information about the murder victim. In addition to the sleuthing, there is a little romance and lot of fun in One Murder More, a cute debut novel.

This book offers fascinating insight into the machine that is our Washington policymakers. We see the heavy influence of lobbyists and the behind-the-scenes deals necessary in order to pass a bill. The realism here puts us behind those closed doors with the politicians. This, in my opinion, is the book's strength.

The plot unravels at a good pace, speeding up and carrying us along as we move closer to the truth. We're right there with Maren, as she persistently digs up secrets in order to find a killer. While the plot is well planned, the author's effort to give us mystery and suspense brings us a number of characters and subplots wrap that around themselves, and sometimes I felt tangled within it all.

The biggest problem for me was that I missed an emotional connection. While I understood Maren as a professional woman, I wanted more from her on a personal level. For instance, before her friend's arrest, I hadn't felt any special bond between them at all. Consequently, upon his arrest, her insistence on his innocence and her drive to set him free didn't quite ring true for me.

Despite my grumblings, this book does set the stage for an intriguing series to come.

Interesting premise, great thriller motive as it turns out. Would have given it more stars but I was unimpressed with the writing, and peeved that it was so poorly edited. When I took it out of the wrapper, I instantly loved the cover, and the jacket has a superb feel. It looks so professional, but that's where the professional part seemed to end. Misspellings (Character name), quote left off, period left off, wrong word tense...can't remember it all. Those types of errors distract me and tend to cause my hypercritical side to kick in.

That said, the setting being in the halls of the legislature and the heroine Maren Kane rubbing shoulders with the governor of California intrigued me from the beginning. Kane, though, comes across as immature. She needs to grow up. I liked her dog, though. And I really did like the story, which is a very quick read. This is apparently Ms. Calvin's debut mystery, so she deserves another chance. I just hope she doesn't continue constantly describing the daily outfits of everyone in the novel. I don't really care what they're wearing. Maybe once, but not day after day after day....

Especially for a debut novel, One Murder More was an excellent read. I generally have trouble reading fiction, preferring the intrigue of history over most stories, but the excitement of discovering the true plot behind the murders made this book a wonderful read. There are a few flaws (a few editing mistakes and a confusing beginning) but once the plot really started to twist I couldn't set the book down. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a fun summer read--especially those who love political dramas like The West Wing, Scandal, or House Of Cards.

A murder is discovered in the halls of the California Capitol (actually, a lady's restroom), and the lobbyist who made the discovery is drawn into an investigation of the case because of her connection with the victim and suspect. Because the heroine isn't directly involved in the murder investigation and is only an acquaintance of the principals instead of a close friend, the tension was somewhat diluted for me. There were also a few coincidences that stretched my credulity. Nevertheless it was interesting to read about how politics work in the capital of the nation's most populous state by an insider who obviously knows what she's talking about.

I really enjoyed this book ! I was a history major in University, but my minor was political science...It was nice to read a book that was a murder mystery with such political influence and intrigue. Maren was a well written character that you were rooting for from page one. I am very interested to see the next adventure Maren gets into. I'm also excited to see what happens with her jealous ex, and Alec....oh the drama !!!

Maren Kane is a lobbyist who tries to push legislation through the California legislature. A senate aide is murdered and Maren's close associate and friend Sean, is the prime suspect. Maren works hard to find out what really happened, and she uncovers a plot involving the governor, competing forces opposed to the proposed legislation, corruption and bribery. The ending was a surprise. I liked the book and highly recommend it.

This political thriller is beautifully written; it's a compelling story that kept me guess almost to the end. The characters are fully developed, likable, and real, and they are the ones who drive the story. The author clearly draws the atmosphere of the political intrigue that happens in state politics, as well as the heart-thumping panic that come with death and near-death situations. I did note a few small continuity errors, but they were easily brushed aside to follow the fast pace of the book. There are almost too many characters to keep track of, but after a few encounters, they fall into place, and most serve their purpose. This book is a compelling read. I had difficulty putting it down and pushed myself to get to the end, sacrificing sleep in order to make it. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves mysteries and thrillers. I sincerely hope that this book will lead to a series as I hope to discover more about Maren Kane and her friends.

Kris Calvin's, One Murder More, was a simple and efficient whodunit. There were many things I liked about this new authors style choices and the story line itself. The story begins with lobbyist, Maren Kane saving children from a drowned, wrecked vehicle along with Senator Alec Joben. Shortly after, she finds a good friend dead. Unfortunately, her old friend and mentee, Sean, is immediately nabbed for the unthinkable crime. Maren doesn't believe the cops have the right guy and thus, works hard to clear Sean's name (and secure his freedom). Throughout the story, you get a good grasp on who Maren is and the author does a great job in bringing her personality full circle through the men she dates...or doesn't date. Also, you get a full glimpse into her life as a lobbyist as she uncovers legal issues with a bill she is trying to pass. A bill that has a lot of blood on it. In her search for the killer, Maren finds out more than she bargains for.

I enjoyed Calvin's characterization of Maren and her relationships. Unfortunately, her character was a bit confusing at times because she was extremely undecisive or shy while in others bold and heroic. Maybe that was the character arc at work? I thought Alec and her relationship was forced and didn't happen organically. So it was hard to get excited about how they end up. Anyway, the author does a good job of explaining details that matter and keeping the readers in the dark about what actually happens. Many red herrings are thrown in to keep you guessing. I would caution the author to not get caught up in too many minor details (such as using four sentences to explain what a Tesla looks like). Overall, I rate the book a 3.5 because of the heavy legal and political aspects that I didn't find super interesting as well as the character not being someone I'd remember after a few books. When there were slow moments, they were incredibly slow. The mystery was good and I couldn't figure it out, so for that, I tipped it closer to a four star. This book is for readers who enjoy a good political mystery with a main character that takes you through it at a steady pace but doesn't quite win you over.

I won this book from Goodreads in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed this book for the most part. It was fast-paced enough to keep the reader from getting bored, yet not so fast that you got lost or confused. My main problem was that many of the characters were completely one-dimensional and the heroine's "love interest" in the form of the handsome senator kind of seemed like a jerk. His treatment of his ex-wife and Maren's support of him doing it really upset me and made me wonder if the author has ever had children or been around anyone who has. For starters, warranted or not, mocking and belittling someone who isn't there to defend herself is never okay and if he treats his ex-wife that way, then how does Maren expect him to treat her? Second, his reasons for not loving his wife anymore? Ridiculous. "She complained constantly of her morning sickness, let the house become a mess and burst into tears whenever he pointed out a spot she missed on the floor or a sticky place on the counter." Um, hello? SHE WAS PREGNANT WITH TWINS! Hyperemesis gravidarum is a very common affliction of women who are pregnant with multiple babies, so OF COURSE she was sick all the time! As for allowing the house to become messy and crying when he dickishly pointed out stuff she didn't do instead of helping her, I'd cry too! She's growing two people inside her body and instead of being a supportive husband and understanding that she's ill and tired he comes home and immediately criticizes, making her feel useless and lazy? Couple that with the hormones and it's a wonder that she didn't try to murder him. THAT would've made an interesting backstory.

From the Cover: In One Murder More a beautiful legislative aide is found stabbed to death in California's Capitol building. Maren Kane, a lobbyist for a fledgling Sacramento-based toy company, is in the midst of a legislative fight that could make or break her career. She hasn't time for a coffee break, let alone involvement in a murder investigation. But when police arrest Maren's colleague for the crime, she's certain they have the wrong man. The cops suspect a crime of passion—love gone wrong. Maren disagrees, firmly believing that in the capital money and power drive all things tragic and scandalous, while sex and love are little more than window-dressing. Piecing together clues from the disparate worlds of politics, high finance, and Hollywood, Maren feels close to uncovering the killer's identity. But will she be able to prove her theory--and free her friend—before she becomes the next victim?

The book is a fast paced enjoyable read with a possible real-life story line. I found it interesting. I don't read a lot of books that have politics in the story, but this was an exception. It was a good one. The only thing I didn't like about the book was all the different names for the characters. At first I found myself going back in the book to find out-who is this character again. Even with that this is a very good read.

"One Murder More" is the first novel by Kris Calvin. This is a murder mystery where Calvin draws upon her experience in the California political system to provide some insight into some of the dealings that go on behind the scenes.

I thought the novel started out really well, but fizzled out in the second half. I think part of this has to do with Calvin's plan to have a series of books focused around Maren Kane, the lobbyist protagonist of the novel. She is a go-getter, and we get a good look at her background and personal life. Also early on, we are introduced to Senator Alec Joben and there is instant attraction between the two. Senator Joben is an ex-marine and it appears obvious that the intention is to have him featured prominently in future books. I think the problem is that he was a secondary character at best in this novel. He did very little in terms of helping to solve the murders in this novel. Also, the initial encounter between Kane & Joben actually played an insignificant role in the rest of the book. Meeting at the scene of a car crash & rescuing the children could just as easily have been a chance encounter in the coffee shop.

Some of the actual events didn't seem plausible; specifically where Maren (days after being shot in the leg & using a cane to walk) runs around the swimming pool. Overall however, it was a good read, with enough twists to keep the reader engaged.

I received this book for free through Goodreads First-Reads.

I bought this book on the advice of a friend, and I'm so glad that I did. Maren Kane is a smart, funny, and compassionate character, the plot is unusual but relevant to current events, and I really look forward to reading more of her adventures in the future.

The glimpses into the California legislature and lobbying scene was fascinating, and as someone relatively unfamiliar with the lobbying process, I appreciated that the intricacies of the system were clearly explained -- the author's professional experience is very evident.

I am always happy to find a book with a strong and competent female protagonist, and Maren certainly did not disappoint me. She loves her job, is passionate about it and the people she works with, and is clearly a great lobbyist. She's definitely not a shrinking violet who always needs rescuing. Her struggles to balance her professional life with family, friends, and maybe even romance were realistic and relatable. The other characters in the book are equally interesting - particularly her physicist brother and her best friend.

Once I started reading this, I couldn't put it down!

I got this as part of a free giveaway -- the author is the sister of kindle blogger Bufo Calvin. This is her first book.

On the whole it was fine. The mystery was reasonably complex -- she certainly knows the ins and outs of politics in the California statehouse. There were, however, several scenes that seemed to come out of the blue -- necessary to the plot but didn't follow naturally. As well as a subplot that wasn't needed at all. Still, I think she intends to make this a series, so it's possible a lot of this was by way of character introduction.

There were also some coincidences that felt a bit contrived and some points that were never actually explained. Not to mention one or two things that felt just . . . off . . . somehow. I would say 'out of character' but there wasn't much depth to the characters so it's not quite that. Mind you, that's fine, if it's an engrossing plot -- mysteries are often more about the plot than the people -- but until I got well past the halfway point I was almost having to force my self to keep reading. :(

If she writes another, I may try it, but, honestly, if it is again set in the world of Sacramento politics, I'm not sure I'll bother. Just not where my interests lie.
