Rate this book
Erin McEvoy tries to be an optimist, but her life is in a downward spiral. Her job as a reporter at a small Boston news station and her love life are going nowhere, but the thing that worries her most is the fact that Erin has started seeing things. Specifically, a tall, winged shadow following her wherever she goes. Afraid that she might be losing her mind, Erin ignores the shadow—until she's nearly hit by a car.

It's then that she realizes it's not simply a shadow but her guardian angel, a beautiful female angel named Gabrielle, with turquoise eyes and a teasing smile that makes Erin's heart race. Gabrielle reveals herself to Erin in order to protect her from an unknown, impending danger, and since it might happen at any moment, Gabrielle never leaves Erin's side. As the two women become closer, love begins to grow...

But relationships between angels and humans are forbidden. Will Gabrielle risk falling from grace in order to experience the depths of her feelings for Erin? Or will an unseen celestial force drive the two women apart?

The Guardian Angel is a lighthearted, heartwarming romance about trust, fate, and new beginnings. It is approximately 58,000 words.

“The Guardian Angel” is a cute, lighthearted but ultimately dull audiobook. In typical Essex fashion, a mortal girl is attracted to an amazing woman…in this case not a knight or a werewolf, but an actual Angel. Erin (the mortal) is frequently filled with questions, but rarely really communicates with Angel. Erin also lacks confidence, and “works her courage up” almost to the point of doing something….many times. Erin sums up her part in the story well when she thinks ”I’m way overthinking this…as usual.”

Again, in typical Essex fashion, we never really learn much of Angel Gabrielle’s reason for loving Erin.

While much of the story is YA and instalove, there is one explicit scene between them that moves the book more into adult category…so there is that!

Narrator Stephanie Murphy did a great job, given the dull material, and the narration kept me entertained enough that I rate the audiobook 3* - meh, instead of something lower.

Age gap. hehehe. Sorry. Wasn't sure if I'd actually think of anything about this specific book. But then I looked at the shelves and saw that. Age gap. Yeah. Hmms. There is an age gap in this story. *nods* Between the two people in the main relationship in this book. Oh, just a couple years here or there (plus, basically, infinity). Age gap. hehehe.

So, yeah, hmms. This is a book about a rather sad and depressed youngish woman. News reporter on the smallest, lowest rated news station in Boston. BEAN. And she's on the lowest rung of reporters at said station. The kind of reporter who always gets assigned the off-beat stories. Like a pie fight. Among clowns. Erin McEvoy, I'm talking about. And the book is about the moment she meets another woman, one Gabrielle. And they start a sweet little relationship.

They meet cute, so to speak. What with Gabrielle running into Erin. While Erin was in the street. About to be hit by a car. And by running into, I mean saving Erin from certain . . . well, pain at least. For that is her mission, her being Gabrielle, to save Erin.

And the book flows from there. Following the two of them, Erin the news reporter, and Gabrielle, the Guardian Angel.

I liked the story. It was, to a certain extent, a little cutesy, but then I have been almost continuously bemoaning the fact that I kept seeming to run into these lesbian romance novels which seemed filled with conflict and . . . and .. um . . . I don't remember now. So it's nice to read a lesbian romance where the couple seem to generally like each other, to love each other. There is a certain amount of 'conflict' that needs to be resolved. And a certain amount of tension between Erin and Gabrielle. I mean, we are talking about two completely different types of beings here. Human and Angel. Naturally there will/would be some issues. Still, not as bitter and difficult to read as some of the books I've read recently.

This is a light and breezy novel. There's little more than a hint of angst here, and we never learn much at all about who Gabrielle (the titular Guardian Angel) is as a person, but this is more of a 'will they/won't they' story in which the reader knows from word one that they will. The only real question is which form the happily-ever-after will take. There aren't many surprises, but the purpose of the story is to entertain, not reinvent the wheel, and the reader gets that sense very early on.

Told in first-person, Erin's mind is a fairly entertaining place to be: she's funny, a little insecure, lonely, and basically sleepwalking through life when we meet her. It's easy to like her, which makes it much easier to invest in her story.

Gabrielle...well, I mean she's an angel, so she's sort of perfect in a formless, undefined kind of way. We know she's beautiful, a snappy dresser and a little on the quirky side, but that's about it. Erin's best friend Ginger and her co-worker Scott are more developed than the love interest, mostly due to the author's need to keep Gabrielle 'mysterious.' C'este la vie.

All in all, this was an enjoyable book. There's very little depth here, but not every novel needs to explore the darkest pits of human existence; sometimes a nice bowl of ice cream is enough.

Side note: the editing and proofreading are very good. There are a handful of errors, but the book was leaps and bounds ahead of most lesfic, which I greatly appreciated.

Just a lovely sweet romance between a woman (Erin) and her guardian angel (Gabrielle) who couldn't resist intervening in her life.

Just makes you warm and fuzzy and all things nice! No angst just a love story.

Another great story by Bridget.

Wow, after this I almost believe in guardian angels. I love this story. I've often thought of the car accident of Bridget and her wife. It gives the story an extra dimension. despite it being a nasty incident. Another great book by Bridget and she did it again.

I've been kinda lukewarm towards the stuff I've read from this author, for one reason or another, but this is the first time I found myself immersed and enjoying something she wrote.

The romance is just so sweet -- the angel character is perfectly written, with a warm sincerity without coming across as twee. I do with there was more background for the human lead - I'm pretty sure she has a dead mother that's mentioned once and not really expanded on - but oh well.

I even went and bought a print copy from amazon, since I enjoyed it so much (plus it's one of her few books that are still in print).

Yeah. I struggled with this one. Hard
Core. It started out promising but just fell flat. Gabrielle was flat and two dimensional. She was only written as charming otherwise I would have considered her as creepy...? I don’t care for how they think they got the power that be okayed their relationship.... and then they are banging. I mean Gabrielle had no interests in anything but food and the stuff that Erin wanted which added to the Gabrielle creep factor

Heavenly!

This is a very well written tale with well developed characters and an engrossing storyline. Lost among bigger, better, more important stories, an unknown reporter falls in love with her guardian angel. Can this be more than a one-sided love? What happens when the guardian angel's duties are fulfilled? For answers to these questions and more, I recommend you be sure to add this book to your must-read list.

This had its cute moments but I didn’t feel all that invested in the story or writing. There were lengths of text I struggled with and found myself either skimming through or skipping. I went back into the book in an attempt to pinpoint the reason for that because uttering such a vague statement annoys me, but couldn’t locate those offending bits; that means they were either short and/or few and far between (my 2nd look wasn’t exactly thorough, though...) Hm.

When angels fall, good things can happen.

A feel good love story about a guardian angel named Gabrielle and a small time Boston TV reporter named Erin. Gabrielle is sent to save Erin from a premature death, which she does, but with an unexpected consequence. Gabriella and Erin fall in love. Falling in love with a mortal is against the rules. A light read.

Sweet romance, but the end came kind of fast and was a bit messy (still satisfying and happy though).

I don’t know, the premise just didn’t work for me. But I think this is due to my personal beliefs and experiences with angels more than anything. I just couldn’t get out of my head enough. I did enjoy the guessing game of when it was a life saving event or not.

Refreshing for a quick summer read

I don't usually judge a book by its cover, but I have to admit that when I saw the first cover choice I wasn't exactly attracted to the idea of picking it up. When the cover was updated I decided to give it a chance. It may have been the concern that the book appeared like it might be too, I don't know, religious? Either way, after the change I decided to give the summary a glance. I'm so glad that I did. This isn't the first of Essex's books that I've read by any means, but the first I was hesitant about.

I just nearly started a dissertation on the spiritual over religious connotation of angels in literature in this review before starting over! But my point would have boiled down to this: the story has enjoyable characters, non-religious take on angels, some tension but thankfully no high drama, no overly commented "electricity" between characters (literally-though attraction is definitely implied), and enough intimacy to make this a fun and engaging summer read. Will be looking forward to many more stories from this author!

The premise sounds good, but then the implementation lacks.
If everybody is assigned a guardian angel, how come that people die in accidents?
But as in the other works of the author the world building logic retreats far behind the love building between the protagonists.

Mmmmm

This is the first book of Bridgets that I had a hard time getting into. But I did like the way it ended.

From the start there was a shadow of a dark threat coming for Erin, and this book could have been so much better if that threat had been as nefarious as the build up. I know Bridget Essex could have absolutely pulled of something more intense. In the end, the fizzle was a pretty weak reason to write a story about a human and guardian angel falling in love. Oh sure, its really well written; it's mostly an adorable, fluffy, light summer read.
