Whew... Blake's punk ass ex did a number on her physically, and mentally turning her heart to stone! 💔 Although she was still grieving, she took her pain and turned it into a profitable business where she could take care of expectant mothers. But any feelings/emotions for anyone other than her family, or her tight knit group, nonexistent! Until a stranger comes to town.
Scotty has had it hard his entire life, after being abandoned by his father, and living with an ain't ish momma! Being biracial with peculiar features set him apart, but he always found his way. Looking for a change, he is asked to come to Charlotte to help a struggling business, when he meets Blake. These two were like oil and water in the beginning, as Blake was used to everyone bowing down to her, and letting her have her way. Scotty came through confident, not caring about Blake's feelings, and gave her the real from the jump. Who does this man think he is, she wonders? 👀 It doesn't take long for that sparring chemistry to turn into more.
This read had friendship betrayals, family dysfunction, secrets exposed, and hella drama! Another good time. Really loved Scotty! 🤩
This was an okay read, but I felt like there needed to be more development of Scotty and Blake's relationship. The romance just didn't click for me because Mel Dau told us how much they loved each other, but they had very little interaction before the love declarations were being tossed around; we needed to see more of them being together for it to resonate, especially with how cold Black supposedly was after her last relationship.
I am gonna need Mel Dau to scooch in, come here, closer. 👊🏿👊🏿 Scotty and Blake took me there. You dig your thing telling a traumatic life experiences from both lives in way that left me glued to each chapter and scene. Each phase was filled with humor, hurt, and "you in danger" moments that had me coughing and laughing at the same time. Kudos on this unforgettable story and her characters. Grab this five star novella y'all. 👀 You didn't hear it from me but be near a bathroom in one chapter. I just saying. 😉😉
Scottyyyyy! I wasn't sure what to expect when I started this book. My girl Blake went through so much including something so traumatic that it made her lose her softness. She was cold, used to running the show and going through life alone. Then came along Scotty who could see past her tough exterior. The way this man handled her! The way he loved her past her pain. He did not let her use that tough act on him while allowing her the space to enter into her soft girl era. He also had no problems with her being a boss in her own right! Ms. Dau did it again! This story was powerful, unique and beautiful with some BDE sprinkled in!
Two tarnished souls finding solace in each other! This was a great read, as always from Mel Dau. Scotty and Blake were a whole vibe. The chemistry was off the charts starting from their first encounter. A hardened woman fighting to keep her soft side hidden, and an alpha male who had no problem pulling her in until she felt safe enough to let that softness show!
Although this story has its comedy and fun moments, it was also tragically beautiful. From the beginning, my emotions were on a rollercoaster. I felt for both Blake and Scotty; they had different battles, but the pain was still felt for both. I loved that they had each other as well as others in their corners because they needed them!
The secondary characters understood the assignment! Blake's parents were EVERYTHING! The way they loved her and eventually Scotty was felt every time. Scotty’s parental situation was different, but it came full circle, and I couldn't stop grinning and crying when it did. This storyline was complex in the best way. We got the characters’ heartbreak, accomplishments, acceptance, and adaptation to the curveballs thrown their way!
Mel Dau will always be a favorite of mine. I'm reading anything she releases because she never lets me down! As with a lot of her books, she has secondary characters that I want more from, so we'll see if any are talking to her because I would love to see them find their HEAs😁
Why is it always the best friend? And raggedy azz mamas that do the most.
Blake was damaged goods, but Scotty saw through her figga exterior. Blake was coping with the loss of her son the best way she knew how. Scotty loved her the right way. He was definitely a man's man. I love the way that they didn't play about each other.
When Blake had the unfortunate episode in her office with a potential client, Scotty came through like Superman. And as Pop Travis so eloquently told those people, “Oh, trust us, that’s the last thing that we are concerned with. See, your wife did an intake form, so we have all your information. Within the next hour, I will have all the information for your entire lineage. If I even think you or your bitch said anything about this sad set of circumstances that you caused, I will start with the oldest muthafucka on the family tree and lay them out while my son-in-law starts with the youngest. Don’t sentence your whole lineage to death because you can’t go on about your day and enjoy it.” That let you know right there how he was stepping behind his baby girl.
This was truly an enjoyable read. Mel Dau got us all in these streets looking for a Scotty and Pop Travis.
Mel Dau, why would you do this to me? Scotty loved Blake in a way that made me stop and reread whole paragraphs. He wasn't trying to fix her. He just wanted to help carry what she had been carrying alone. And when he said, "our son"... whew. Yeah, that one took me out. I had to gather myself. I loved that Blake wasn't written as some perfect woman with it all together. She was strong, complicated, hurting, and exhausted from being everything to everybody. Watching her finally let that halo fly was beautiful. Scotty came in with confidence, a slick mouth, and enough swagger to get on your nerves, but underneath all that was a man who loved with his whole chest and came with his own emotional baggage but didn’t allow it to change how he felt about Blake. That's the kind of book boyfriend I can get behind. Halo Like a Frisbee is funny, emotional, and full of heart. It reminds you that the best love stories aren't about perfect people. They're about finding someone who looks at your broken pieces and says, "We'll carry this together." That "our son" scene is still sitting with me. Scotty knew exactly what he was doing, and so did Mel.
This story was good from beginning to end. Blake was complex but also relatable. She came off soft in the beginning until tragedy struck and she turned cold in most cases outside of dealing with her baby curating business. Scotty was the perfect match for her and matched her energy while also being consistent enough to allow her to live in her soft girl era when they were together. I loved them together and they kept me laughing.
This wouldn’t be a Mel Dau story without some side characters filled with the delusion and audacity being at an all time high and there were several of them in this story. Their audacity and delusion was a bit comical as well, because seriously! There are also some instances of violence, but the love between Blake and Scotty and their family and close friends outshined all of that. This was a very good read and I’m looking forward to the next one by this author.
Blake suffered a tragic loss and now she is ruthless and hardcore. She has zero tolerance for a lot of stuff and she is kind of unapproachable. Scottie is new in town and someone she must work with. He recognizes her personality but doesn’t bow down to it. He makes it known that they’re equals and that he’s a man who will not be emasculated by her. Scottie forces Blake to embrace her feminism again and to let down her guard. He shows her that she is safe with him and that he’s the man who will always have her covered. I loved how Scottie loved her unapologetically. He allowed her to embrace her soft girl era and she showed him how much she needed and appreciated his love. They were two people who were strong but complimented each other. Scottie and Blake didn’t play about each other. Anyone who stepped to them learned the hard way!! I loved this couple and I loved this book!! Mel Dau knows she got me sprung on her writing.
I can ALWAYS expect this author to knock her storyline out the park!!!…This story will leave you with no questions to be asked and make You feel like family to the characters and their journey changes and their worlds adjust!!!… There is ALWAYS something special in the story that will resonate with you personally and leaves very little to be judged!!!… Blake was a woman from a loving family, knew her worth and made a decision that cost her a lot and it hardened her and others judged her outside surface without knowing her story!!!… Scotty stepped in and offered her something that others were scared to give, a soft landing place and the desire to change how she moves the line in the protection that a man that truly love you can provide!!!…
Well damn!!! This story was quite something. Blake’s character in Read the Room, would lead on to think she was a lesbian. This book proved me wrong, her heart was just stone cold from the fuc nigga she dealt with. Oh but I would have search for that so called best friend and gave her a stamp between the eyes.
Scotty was the man Blake needed and as the story progressed the she was the woman Scotty needed. This love affair evolved and multiplied. I love their under the table life just as much as their public life. They were meant for each other. Grimm is the daddy of all good dads, I really like how he handled that business. Mama Marla wasn’t to be played with either; sending a stylist to ole boy’s mom was diabolical 🤣😂
As always I love being “All Scootched In”… ready for the next one!!
There is no way this book started off the way that it did. It wasn't even a Humpty Dumpty situation where we were put back together. Blake was broken and to me she stayed that way to the very end. The layers of grief were like an onion and we had to keep peeling and peeling. It was the office scene for me. I was NO freaking good.
Mel had to find a strong enough man to get in there and sooth her soul and she did. Scotty was the man even though he had his own mess. I was blown away by that as well but again them together made hard stuff eyes. Lighting each other load but also easing the pain and guilt of given situations. Everyone can't do everything but there is always someone who can do something.
Both Scotty and Blake had been through a lot in their lives. Scotty because of his mother and Blake because of Cory, the man who was in her life before she met Scotty. I loved that Scotty and Blake met at a time in their lives when they could help each other overcome the tough times that they had gone through. I also loved how Scotty knew he wanted Blake and never let up off her. There were several characters in the book that were trash especially Cory and Blake's so-called best friend, Shana. Scotty's mother, Lashonda, was truly awful as well. She didn't appreciate how good she had it and everything that was provided to her. The emotional moments, drama, secrets, humor, and shenanigans made this a book that I highly recommend.
Baby the way I cried and smiled and also at one point livid!!! Yeah that one person got off light. But otherwise this book was a beautiful palette cleanser. The way Scotty and Blake loved and held one another physically and emotionally. Mannn that was truly beautiful. Their love had me saying god it’s me and I see what you do for others lol. Scotty was a man through and through and he was a man who expressed his love to his woman with no problems. He wasn’t always hard body and Blake gave him that safe space to do just that. To be each other’s safe space, joy, peace. Man their love was just breath taking. 1000000000/10 recommend
Mel Dau, that's who! You write the best stories, Melvin's Daughter! Every book I have ever read written by you has been top tier. "Halo Like A Frisbee" was a different kind of excellent. Blakeney was having a baby. Cory was no longer happy at the prospect of being a father. He made an impulsive decision that he could not undo. It cost him his life and Blake's heart. Scotty McLeod wasn't looking for love. Even though he had heard the rumors about Blake, he could not resist and they both fell hard. Now if he can just stop that halo from tipping on Blake's sweet little head to prevent her from annihilating everything in her path...
Blakeney is in a relationship and pregnant. However, things take a drastic turn by the hands of someone who is supposed to love her. After it is said and done, her personality takes on a harder exterior.
Scottie is hired to use his expertise to revive a business. He is straightforward and to the point.
Scotti meets Blakeney and decides that she is for him. He slowly chips away at her walls, and they are able to develop something
Scotti learns secrets of his past and must make some difficult decisions for his future.
Scotty is the book bae I never knew I needed! He never said a word he didn't mean. He loved as hard as he took care of business. Blake was boss lady you did not want to mess with. I loved that she monologued with her enemies! 🤣 She faced some tough times, but with the support of her mom, dad, Q'ame and Scotty she fell into her soft girl era. Loved the strong family bond, especially with the addition of Scotty's family. Read to find out! Loved this quick read!
An unexpected story with some twists and turns that had you reeled in turning your pages quickly Excellent and relatable characters and storyline about two broken people who meet and ultimately fall in love and realize they are true soulmates Their journey is not easy but so worth it for the reader because we get the chance to see Blake find her true self again and Scotty finds a family he didn’t know Mel always penns stories that gets you thinking about life choices and their consequences good or bad Excellent job Ms Mel.
Despite her digs at The Incomparable Queen City, aka Charlotte, Mel Dau threw down with this one. From tragedy to rebuilding, a badass FMC and an "I can tell you what to do because I can tell you what to do, and you better hear me" MMC, I was locked in because when Scotty determined Blake would be his, he meant that shit whether she was getting with the program or not. I liked the conflicts the couple had to go through and how the pacing moved. By the end, I was satisfied with this novella. A little bit of trauma and darkness, violence and bloodshed, but all in the name of love.
Once again fabulous book. As always love the characters. This book will have you in your feelings. Blake she is her mother and father's daughter. Still, that doesn't protect you from living life. Then there's Scotty life is often unfair. But, when you have people who love, then moves are made on your behalf. Mel Dau never disappoints. As always, it's my pleasure reading your books.
This is a heartwarming story of love after loss. After surviving a harrowing relationship in which she lost so much, Blakely poured herself into her work and basically wrote off love. That is until Scotty entered her orbit. Together they worked though some tough situations and found their HEA. In true Mel Dau form, this story speaks on the hard part but is also enteraining. I cried, I laughed, and I swooned.
I typically love Mel Dau’s books, but this one did not do it for me. I was fairly certain this was not my speed early on, but was hoping it was going to get better and it didn’t. The relationship between Scotty and Blake moved quickly, yet was underdeveloped between the pages. The same with Scotty and Killian. I rolled my eyes at the entire mess with Lashonda. The ending with Megan was so unnecessary. It added nothing to the overall story.
After being betrayed by her best friend and beaten until she was unconscious and lost her child, Blake turned into a beast of a woman. She turned on her charm when she worked in her business, which she shopped and decorated for expectant parents, but no man was good enough for her. That is until Scotty showed up and brought out the soft side of her. This book was well written, flowed well and was quite interesting.
Mel has not written a book that I have not loved!!
Scott and Blake were definitely made for each other and he entered her life when she needed him the most and just let her be herself!!
She was hurt by people that she thought loved her and was still healing from all she lost because of them and he was just a grown man that knew what he wanted and did everything he needed to do to get her.
You will absolutely love their story, so go ahead and add this to your TBR!
TW I needed a few more warehouse visits for the former bff and the clients… I know, fiction but 🙄 Mama Marla and her husband were the bit of comic relief that I needed between the foolishness. Blake, my FAVORITE FMC bad chick…. ❤️💔🕊️😤🥰🤭😇 Scotty, her man, and I ain’t saying anything else just in case lol HEA ✅ When he said “ours” 🥹🥹😭😭🕊️🕊️ and the cemetery FMC ✅ MMC ✅
There is absolutely nothing like reading a Mel Dau book. You created your own lane and style from the beginning. Others of tried to adapt it but it’s unique yours, never to be duplicated.
A Halo Like a Frisbee gave us some unexpected mystery and I was here for it all!!
I loved how you tell the story of loss so tenderly amd how you turn it around so beautifully. Mel Dau, you are such an amazing writer. Since finding your stories which was The Charleston love story and Mega was my first books and I've been a fan ever since. Keep writing and I promise to keep reading.
I enjoyed this story with Scotty and Blake. I was glad that both Blake and Scotty found each other. I loved the bond between Blake and her parents. Scotty’s mother was straight trash. But he got an extended family when he got with Blake.
This book had everything. It's a quick read, but it's full of love, drama, plenty of action and heartache. I loved that Scotty recognized Blake's needs and expertly drew out her vulnerabilities. Despite facing their own personal issues, both remained authentic and provided unwavering support for one another.
