He lived a lie to protect his family...
Michael Whitfield left home nearly a decade ago, but when his childhood friend is murdered and accused of high treason, he is determined to clear his name and his killer be brought to justice no matter the cost, even if it means accompanying the woman who turned out to be a nothing more than a heartless viper. But as their mission takes twisted turns and reveals a sinister plot that threatens both their lives and the lives of the innocent, his admiration for her grows and sparks between them once again ignite. But can he trust his heart to a woman who history hold nothing but lies?
Let me start by saying I loved this book and I’m saddened that there’s only this one book by this author. The story was just great and the sexual tension between Michael and Emma was fabulous. There was a lot of angst, which I hate, but in this book I didn’t mind it. The BS Emma was told and what Michael believed about Emma made perfect sense and they just had to figure it out. What I didn’t mind was that they had to figure it out together, not sitting somewhere separately and thinking about it, but in each other’s company, because they had to work together while staying away from killers.
One thing I didn’t understand was the two of them being on a boat taking them to Tibet and opening the letter, to commit it to memory, given to them by their superior and finding the paper blank and Emma wanting to go to their superior for help finding the person who tried to kill them. Wouldn’t you think she’d be a little suspicious of finding the paper blank and wonder if she could really trust him.
This story was super exciting from beginning to end. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars.
And as to the 2 star reviewer? She said, “And although I am not against sexual content, I don't prefer they take up so much of the material.” Really? There was ONE sex scene. I have no ides WTH you’re talking about.
Just a word of advice here for this author. DON’T use the same word over and over again. The word “scum” was used 10 times in 6 pages. That’s how you get the word “repetitive” used in bad reviews. After reading that word 10 times I was seriously tired of it. AND don’t use the word “penis.” That’s just too clinical. Too “at-the-doctors’-office clinical. (Oh, and you need to write faster.)
So, lots of sexual tension, ONE sex scene and the F-bomb was used 3 times, but they really were needed where they were said. It’s not so much that you can’t overlook them. This is a really, really wonderful book and all romance readers should read it. Just sayin’
I recieved this book through GoodReads First Reads. This was a great romance book, good action and the plot moved fast. I am looking forward to reading more books by Kristi Jun.
This story was good. The spy portion of the book was well done. I just wish there was more romance. I do think this author is very good and I will read her books again.
I loved this book! I love that both the hero and heroine are spies, and with that I especially LOVE that our heroine isn't afraid to use weapons. I wasn't expecting to get hooked with the spy/suspense aspect of the story but even I suprised myself when I did. I admit that I am not one to lean towards spy romances but this book kind of made me want to explore that subgenre more. Another thing I appreciated and found interesting was that the author weaved in a bit of history in the plot.
I docked off a star because there were some parts that require technical and grammatical editing. There were also some words that were repeated over and over that it sometimes distracted my reading. I also think the story could use more of the romance plotline rather than the spy one.
Overall, this is a promising historical romance! I'm very glad I decided to pick this one up. Highly recommended!
This is the first of Ms Jun’s books that I have read. It was a good read with lots of action, adventure, mystery, spies, conflict and romance. I enjoyed the relationship between the hero and heroine. The mystery kept you turning the page. I was disappointed though that they never got to Tibet, the one thing that grabbed me in the promo. There are enough secondary characters that could be written about, so I hope we get to read their stories too. There was a sex scene that this reviewer skipped but it didn’t affect my enjoyment of the book. I only gave this book 4 stars because I was disappointed they didn’t get to Tibet. I received this book as a gift and freely did a review.
Wow! I loved and totally enjoyed this book. So entertaining and interesting. Emma list her parents to murder two years back and vowed to find their killer and have justice for them but unfortunately the one person she trusted and sees as family betrayed her. Michael is a spy who had feelings for her a year ago and still has but due to disappointment he received from her is trying to forget about her but circumstances threw them together again on a deadly mission. Will they be able to escape and overcome their differences in order to have a happily ever after? Lovely read.
I loved the plot and the cover. Unfortunately that is where it ends. The book was spoiled for me by the deplorable spelling and grammar, and all the Americanisms. There was no such word as 'snuck' in Regency England. 'Michael' was occasionally spelled 'Michel', 'Geoffrey' became 'Geofrey' and 'wretched' was 'retched.' I could add more but there is not enough room on this page. This book would have been vastly improved by the services of a good proofreader and editor.
Enjoyed reading....lots of intrigue and romance. Quick read. Ending was a bit sugary, though. Recommend to historical romance novel readers as a lightweight read.
