Rate this book
Fifteen years ago an au pair vanished from the Bennett house.

Now, the child she cared for comes home to uncover the truth…

When Annie Bennett returns after her mother’s death, she expects grief, guilt and the painful work of clearing out her childhood home.

Instead, she uncovers a mystery that has long been buried.

Fifteen years ago, Marie Sinclair came from Nova Scotia to work as the Bennetts’ au pair. She was young, kind and loved by Annie and her little brother. Then she disappeared.

Annie was told Marie was troubled. That she stole from the family. That she left in the night and did not want to be found.
But hidden recordings tell a different of a frightened mother, a silent house, and a father who never shouted because he never had to.

Now Annie must question everything she remembers, including the night she stood barefoot in the cold, while someone told her she was only having a bad dream…

Because what happened that night is far more chilling than Annie could ever have imagined.

A dark, emotionally charged psychological thriller about memory, gaslighting, family loyalty and the stories powerful men build around missing women. Perfect for fans of Claire Douglas, Lisa Jewell and Heidi Perks.

Good read

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Characters were well rounded and believable. Good pace, although what had happened seemed obvious from the start, getting to the truth was fascinating. Recommend

Worthwhile read

Worthwhile read. Good psychological reasoning and motivations behind actions. Plot was slightly disappointing and could have had more twists. Three stars.
