Cold Cases True Stories of Murders That Took Years or Decades to SolveThere is no such thing as the perfect crime but there are some crimes that go unsolved for a long time. They are called cold cases. The authorities run out of leads and clues to track down and sometimes these old crimes go years and even decades unsolved.
The cases contained in Cold Cases Solved are some of these stories. Each case was finally solved after a long time. Some of the cases are old murders and some are famous murders. This series of books by Mike Riley tells the condensed story of each of the cases. They are intended to provide pertinent details so the reader gets a good grasp of each case and can then determine whether they want to explore any particular cases further. This allows the books to include more true crime stories and maybe some that the reader may not have heard of before.
Read how the old crimes are re-examined, old evidence is subjected to newer technologies and families learn about the fates of their lost loved ones.
It is really gratifying to see so many of these cases closed. If you like true crime cases and especially seeing the criminals get their just rewards, read this book now!
This book was okay, I'm glad I didn't have to pay for it. Basically it goes through lots of cold cases that used DNA to solve them. The cases were covered in a very brief manner with no real detail at all.
For fans of the true crime genre, especially of TV shows like Forensic Files, a lot of these cases will sound very familiar.
I listened to the audiobook version of this particular book and occasionally the narrator brought me out of the story, occasionally he sounded almost condescending when reading about some of the victims. It was a little weird.
I don't know if the print version is the same way, but the audiobook version is broken out with a chapter for each case, with dates, victims, suspects listed in the beginning of each one. It was a straightforward if a little didactic, probably good for a classroom or educational purposes but not much more information is included than you can get from other sources. And it certainly isn't a comprehensive look into these crimes.
The cases covered were interesting and some cases sad when proper investigation at the time delayed the justice. However to be fair, most times science hadn't developed enough to solve them at the time. Kudos to the investigators who saved evidence until the science became available to test it. Some of the cases were familiar to me from true crime stories. The main point for me is for investigators to never give up on solving crimes. New science or DNA testing is becoming available all the time that can help solve the crimes.
I enjoy books like this because I like the process of police work. A detective is a master puzzle solver. I was not familiar with any of the cases in the book. It was well written and I like the format the writer used. I look forward to reading more of his books.
As a crime and forensic junkie I had high hopes for this book. Cold cases are one of my favorite subjects in the genre and I've read books authored by many of the notable names in forensic science. Mike Riley is not destined to be one of them.
The writing is simple; I kept feeling as if I was reading a book written by a high school student instead of an adult. (My apologies if the author IS a high school student!) The chapters were disjointed and inconsistent. This reads like juvenile or teen oriented yet I think even teens would find this below their level.
A short DIY book featuring twenty-two cold cases that were finally solved, sometimes many years later. Each case is covered VERY briefly, and I ended up reading two or three chapters before turning in each night. I wasn't crazy about the format; each chapter was preceded by a chart loaded with spoilers (listing the victim, suspect, date of crime, and date of conviction) so I finally started avoiding them.
Interesting collection of cold cases. However, before publishing, careful proofreading should have been done. Awkward sentence structure and other errors interrupted the flow of the narrative.
Found the stories quite fascinating, and shaking my head that it could actually take so long for some "cold cases" to be solved...that is IF it ever is solved!!! Look forward to reading more of this author's work very soon!
These stories are short with little detail. If you like more in-depth investigations, this is not that kind of book. It was a quick, easy read. If you are looking for something that doesn't require much thinking, this is what you should read.
