An excellent three-book series that introduced me to the history of aesthetics and Western philosophy. Following the idiosyncratic style of Douglas Hofstadter's "Gödel, Escher, Bach," the books alternate between the main exposition chapters with humorous dialogues between Plato and Aristotle. Diogenes later joins them in the third volume (discussing postmodern aesthetics). The characters travel through time to not only discuss their contemporary arts but also prehistoric and modern arts. It was such a joy to read!
Finishing the entire series enhanced my appreciation of visual arts, especially modern arts, encouraging me to frequent art museums. I strongly recommend this series to art-lovers, philosophy-lovers, or anyone who would want to get started in those subjects. I only hope that someone translates the series into English soon so that it could reach a wider audience!
