I suppose the rhythm and pace gets lost in the translation to English. If I forgive the choppy writing, it is still a brutal story, which isn’t even the part I disliked the most. Candide is thoughtless and pangloss is prideful to maintain his flawed ideology. I wanted someone to realize that suffering is necessary to maintain free will, which would cure Pangloss of his need to prove all things that pass are optimal. Philosophically, both Candide and Optimism are mediocre, and literarily this book was mildly interesting. Overall, just ok 3/10 not the worst thing I have ever read but I did have to force myself to finish it
