Love & Steel #1.5

Deeper Than Dreams

Rate this book
Will wedding bells rock out for Louder Than Love’s most beloved couple in this Love and Steel novella?

Falling in love with rock star Adrian “Digger” Graves was a dream come true for former librarian Kat Lewis. But with a little help from friends and family—including Kat’s adorable daughter, Abbey—Adrian has planned an evening and a proposal beyond her wildest dreams.

The night before, Kat witnessed the triumphant reunion of Adrian’s rock band at Madison Square Garden. Tonight, he will escort her to the elegant, ultra-exclusive Library Lion’s benefit. It seems like a fairytale, but even fairytales have a deeper, darker side. When old habits return to tempt her knight in shining heavy metal armor, will Kat’s happily ever after come crashing back to reality?

THIS IS AN EPILOGUE NOVELLA THAT PICKS UP THE DAY AFTER LOUDER THAN LOVE ENDS. This novella is intended to be read after Louder Than Love.

Don’t miss the next Love and Steel novel, Softer Than Steel, coming in September 2015 from InterMix.

Dear Adrian,

I feast on your voice, mind and body. So I say...

Breathe
Easy Tiger
Into my ear and
Make it last to the end of the earth
I spread my arms wide
Reveling in your incantation
Waiting for the spell to be cast

Your loyal fan,

My fourth five-star rating of the year goes to Deeper Than Dreams by Jessica Topper. It's the truth when I say that I'm totally ecstatic!

Deeper Than Dreams picks up where Louder Than Love left off. After a triumphant (reunion) gig at Madison Square Garden, Adrian has planned a very special and memorable day for his ladylove.

First page, first sentence and I did have a dreamy smile on my face:

"Where would you find fairy tales on the library shelves, luv?"
Adrian's question sifted into my slumber, adding depth and dimension. I was vaguely aware of his warm skin against my cheek and his chest rising and falling in a deep rhythm.
"398.2," I recited, my voice drowsy from dreaming. "Why?"
"I love fairy tales," Abbey murmured to my left. Her small body stiffened in a long stretch before curling around my hip and leg, and her tiny hand pat-patted Adrian's where it was cupped around my shoulder.
"I'm just making sure you know where you're waking up."

It was Louder Than Love and Deeper Than Dreams. It was, simply put, MORE COMPLETE THAN UTTER PERFECTION. I know this makes no sense because perfection is already perfect. However, bear with me and let my rhapsodic joy take its course because it was such a fantabulous ride filled with romantic gestures to bursting.

That's Adrian to a tee when he's teasing...

Deeper Than Dreams is sort of a very long epilogue to Louder Than Love and an intro to Riff's character whose story Softer Than Steel is due out on September 15th, 2015. Louder Than Love does not end on a cliffhanger. This being said, I believe that Deeper Than Dreams is an absolute must read for every fan of Adrian. I'm positive that a huge majority of readers fans will devour this deeply romantic and absolutely stellar short story that provides the perfect ending, the icing and the cherry on top, to Adrian and Kat's love story.

Deeper Than Dreams is…

30,000 words of beautiful, intimate, witty and funny writing that will warm your heart, engage your brain, work out your risible muscle and lacrymal gland all at once and leave you with a big and goofy smile on your face and a serious thrill of anticipation to get your hands on Riff's story Softer Than Steel stat. Fact is, Jessica Topper writes rockstar characters and their engaging stories like nobody's business because they shine with a special brand of depth, texture, maturity and incomparability.

Adrian "Digger" Graves is the man. An outrageously sexy and mature human being in his 40s who is so incredibly charming, smart and witty, and it doesn't hurt at all that his personality is sprinkled with a very helping dose of mischief.

I. Love. That. Unparalleled. And. HUMBLE. Rockstar. God. Of. A. Man. To. Pieces. Period.

From the very first page to the very last, everything was perfect and in true Adrian fashion, the proposal itself was bloody great. It was…

Very original.
Beautiful.
Profoundly romantic.
Endearing.
Sweet.

So many friends offered a helping hand to make this special day unforgettable. Just so you know, I'd love to read Luke and Kimon's story. I can still hear Abbey squealing "Unkie Luke!" and "Unkie Kimon!" She's so darn cute and Luke and Kimon make a gorgeous gay couple.

 photo oie_wOiPeF6fvXsK_zpsxwbulesa.png

Start with Louder Than Love and hop on that intimate journey to discover an absolutely unique and adorable rockstar with a heart of gold and a poet's mind. Sometimes life has a strange way of giving you another chance to break out from your self-imposed solitary life to find inspiration and love in the most unlikely places. Said inspiration and love will lead pre-mentioned rockstar, in a roundabout way, to an all-encompassing resurrection, in private as much as on stage. See? Fairy tales do happen in this day and age.

 photo oie_AbORWNLow7j9_zpsqstbt1pn.png

Thank you, Jess, for having written an exceptionally great musical journey and trimming it with an absolutely unforgettable hero in the form of Adrian "Digger" Graves who holds the title for Most Deliberately Rugged Tuxedo-Clad Male. Besides, I seriously cannot wait to read Rick "Riff" Rotten's story. That man wears a tux like it is his job and calling. Like he is the James Bond of heavy metal. Rotten. Rick "Riff" Rotten. Though I doubt that his alcoholic vice is a martini, shaken not stirred. He will find a moonrise shell in Softer Than Steel and, most likely, his ladylove will tell him this…

 photo Bildschirmfoto 2015-07-22 um 00.07.27_zps0t38yw3g.png

That's on my mind when I imagine widower Riff finding his (second) soul mate. BTW, according to the sneak peek at the end of Deeper Than Dreams, Riff grew out his hair. It's long again and he looks sexy as sin.

Bottom line
In my book, Adrian Graves is a grand reading experience and one that's not to be missed. That man is etched deep in my heart forever and ever. Deeper Than Dreams is worthy of a huge and fat Babalicious stamp of approval because I just can't help swooning over Adrian endlessly.

P.S.
One more...
I'm wearing a perpetual grin of complete bliss on my face. Ok. I'll stop now. Promise.

Well, maybe you could grant me one more little…you know…? Shoot. I said I'd stop now. I'm gone. Bye!

Oh, what the heck…

"Adrian!" I practically belted him with the brass knuckles of my evening bag. "Don't go telling tales out of school."
"What? I did fall for you that day." He grinned. "And each day after."
"You had beer goggles that day."
"That's tosh! I was smitten…even after I had sobered up. And it was Jack Daniels, for the record."

Adrian Graves, did you go and write me a heavy metal love song?"
"Well now, maybe I did."
"I thought if love was going to appear in your music, it had to be doomed, damned, or deadly."
"I've learned since that love runs much deeper than that. Deeper than dreams. And if I've made even one of your dreams come true tonight, then I am a better man for it."

Last year I read a book and fell hard for a fictional couple. I swooned, I sighed, and I fell irrevocably in love with Jessica Topper's incredible writing. Louder Than Love was one of those romances that was just so wonderfully real. I don't even know how to describe it better than that. It wasn't angsty, filled with crazy drama, manwhoring rockstars, or anything of the sort. It had two characters each struggling with moving on from their past finding love together. It was perfection.

I simply adored that book. Now I'm not a reader that typically enjoys follow up novellas for a couple that I loved. Why? Because more often that not, that novella will do something to mess with the couple's HEA, it will throw in some miscommunication or drama, anything just to justify them getting additional story. But I didn't think twice before jumping at the chance to read this novella because I already knew it would be nothing of the sort. And you know what? I wasn't even a little bit wrong.

No one else can take a couple you already loved and then make you fall in love with them even more than you already were in less than 100 pages. But that's exactly what happened here. This was the perfect epilogue novella for Kat and Adrian. I downright cried happy tears at the end of it. What amazed me even more was the feelings that it was able to bring out in me. It's not common that you'd read a novella and by the end of it feel like you read a whole book with the amount of emotions it was able to wring from you.

This is not meant to be read as a standalone, and you absolutely need to read Louder Than Love before this. And if you read and loved Louder Than Love like I did, then this epilogue novella is an absolute must read. I couldn't think of a better conclusion to one of my most beloved couples.

Jessica Topper also gives readers a lot more Rick if you've been curious about him, along with a teaser for his book that will leave you anxious to get your hands on his book in September. I absolutely cannot wait.

Deeper Than Dreams was one of those perfect treats that's like the icing on an already fantastically delicious cake. Emotional, lovely, captivating, it was everything I've already come to expect from this author and more. I simply cannot recommend it enough.

DEEPER than Dreams is the perfect title because they have the dream, but will they be able to live it in a healthy and happy way? This novella eloquently showcases embracing the unknown and whatever life offers in all its rich tapestry. Live in the moment with the people you love, for together, anything is possible.

It kicks off the day after the events of LOUDER THAN LOVE. If it’s been a while since you read Adrian and Kat's beautiful love story, fear not, the author provides gentle reminders of the emotion and context of the story. Readers will reconnect very quickly with the poignant reading experience reigniting their love for Adrian, Kat and adorable little Abbey who, of course continues to woo with her gorgeous demeanour and interaction with Adrian whose excitement in this story is truly infectious. The warmth of his character continues to shine while they appear to be living the fairy tale dream.

But is all as it seems as the true reality of the situation with all its temptation comes crashing down around them. The supporting cast are there to aid the reality and again they're an added layer that I absolutely love, this author can work so much and so many into such a short reading space. Including Rick, the star of the next book in the series. My interest has been firmly piqued about this charismatic character and my reading thirst has been perfectly quenched for his story, I cannot wait to discover more about him.

In terms of novella status DEEPER THAN DREAMS packs a punch. Its engaging throughout and, in many respects, an extended epilogue treat for fans of Adrian and Kat, I basked in the feel of the continuation of their story. In equal measure it's so much more. The author oozes the conflicting emotions of the protagonists with the perfect measure of angst. It felt natural in their circumstance, the fear and worry, and I love how their story evolved and developed. If you LOVED Louder than Love, then this is an ABSOLUTE MUST READ!

My review thoughts for LOUDER THAN LOVE

Louder Than Love wasn’t the typical rocker romance, it felt rooted in reality, without the over-the-top fantasy quality I find in most others. I liked the fact that Adrian was a mature forty-one years old, grown and past some of the foolishness that comes with youth. I could easily believe in Kat and Adrian’s HEA, because their relationship felt like a passionate connection between two grounded people. While Louder Than Love ended happily, I wished for just a little more at the end. Now two years later, I get the epilogue I had wanted all along.

Deeper Than Dreams
picks up immediately after Louder Than Love. Adrian and Kat are on a high off Adrian’s performance at Madison Square Garden the night before, but Adrian has the day planned around pampering Kat and capping off the evening in a grand gesture of love. There were some moments of insecurity felt by Kat once she realizes the magnitude of Adrian’s re-established fame and wonders how it will factor in their future. No worries though, we are talking about the fabulous Adrian here, and Kat and little Abbey are his world!

Jessica Topper’s writing is beautiful and cut right to my heart. She made it so easy to put myself in the character’s shoes, feel all the longing and passion between Kat and Adrian. I was thrilled to be in on some of their blissful moments! Deeper Than Dreams is a must for fans of Kat and Adrian, and if you haven’t yet read their story you are definitely missing out!

I missed these guys! It was great to spend a day-in-the-life! A heart melting, panty dropping day!

Want to pick a day to be a fly on the wall with Adrian and Kat? Well, I’m gonna tell you that Deeper Than Dreams is the perfect day-in-the life to do just that!

Absolutely swoon worthy are these two! Funny, sweet, romantic, and endearing; this new little family has won me heart and soul. Kat gets an up-close and personal look into the “Digger” side of things and his team. And as for Adrian… well he pulls out all the stops for his rockin’ ladylove.

For fans of Louder Than Love, this a cherry on top read.

5 "The devil's in the details, darlin'." Stars

Deeper than Dreams was a super cute novella written as a follow up to the first book in the series, Louder than Love, that totally satisfied my reading needs. It was lovely to catch up with the elusively romantic Adrian Graves, the sweet and semi-neurotic Kat and her darling daughter Abbey.

The novella picks up the morning after the first book ends and the way it opened might have been my most favorite part about it because it was as though we got to live a morning in their lives as a family and got a glimpse as to what the future holds for these three. In the span of the novella, we're only with these characters for a full day but the amount of information we learn and the depth of their commitment and love for each other you'd never think it was a novella at all. In the morning, we learn Adrian has a special day planned for Kat and his execution of the day and all the surprises was just so satisfying. In the course of this day we see maturity from Kat and understand more fully the growth of Adrian's character thanks to a revealing look into Adrian's past.

The information Jessica Topper reveals giving us more into Adrian's past mixed with a lot of revealing information about Riff gives us clues into the next book of the series, which will be Riff's. I look forward to where Topper and her great story telling skills take us next in the journey of the Love & Steel series. I want Riff's book because I'm intrigued greatly by his story and because I want to see more Adrian, Kat, and Abbey through Riff's eyes where I'm sure interesting revelations will happen.

Short and sweet:

This. Holy moly. If you have read Louder than Love (and if you haven't you better get on it) then you should definitely read this. It makes your heart full and evokes the whole range of emotions. Adrian is a man you can only hope to have in your life. He is wise in so many regards yet so vulnerable when it comes to Kat. And Kat, so strong. And their love for each other! Swoon-worthy.

This is the epilogue you don't find in Louder Than Love, and then some. I hope we get to see lots more of this couple.

Perfect follow-up to Louder Than Love! Adrian is just dreamy <3

What a sweet follow-up novella to Louder Than Love that was. It read like a lovely and absolutely sweet extended epilogue to Kat and Adrian's romance and made me love all the characters in this series even more than already did.

One could say that nothing much in terms of action happens in this story - just a preparation for a big/the biggest night out for Kat and Adrian, yet for them and their relationship it was like everything happened. Every little thing mattered and had deeper meaning and affected everyone around the main couple in one way or another.

Reading this felt like watching the farewell episode of a beloved TV show where we meet all the stars of the series again. We see all the important people in Kat and Adrian's lives and it was a true beginning of their HEA.

There was a lot of hope and optimism, some saddness and fear, some fun and sexy times. The story sets stage is set for Rick to shine in the next book coming out in September.

Recommended read for fans of the first book. Adrian is even sexier and kinder and more of everything and Kat just melts my heart.

Not long after I finished writing Louder Than Love, I dreamed up a "fairy tale ending" for the main characters, Kat and Adrian. That became Deeper Than Dreams, the novella that bridges Louder Than Love with the next book in the series, Softer Than Steel (re-releasing April 2021).

In addition to new covers, the entire series will be available in paperback for the first time!

(Please note: for maximum happily-ever-after enjoyment, this novella should be read after Louder Than Love.)

Back in January 2014, while browsing Goodreads, I happened to see a review by a friend/fellow blogger, Lana (of a Dirty Girl Romance blog) that made me sit back and take notice. The review was for a book called Louder Than Love. I immediately one-clicked and the rest, as they say, is history …

Perhaps it was some sort of sign from above that it was Lana who was standing next to me in the middle of Las Vegas casino a few weeks ago when we got the news that the opportunity to review ‘Deeper Than Dreams’ early presented itself. I can’t begin to describe the level of excitement I felt. I even jumped up and down for several minutes waving my hands in the air!

But no amount of excitement could compare to what I felt after I actually finished ‘Deeper Than Dreams’. The novella picks up the morning after that magical ending of ‘Louder Than Love’ and only follows Kat, Adrian & Co. for about 12 hours yet you feel as if you lived a lifetime with these characters. The amount of feelings (uncertainty, fear, love & desire) and information that Jessica Topper manages to pack in this perfect little short is absolutely brilliant!

There is a perfect passage that sums up these 1.5 books for me (since I am not very good with coming up with beautiful words of my own):

With Adrian, I hadn’t been afraid to jump in, feet first. Diving into his present, digging into his past, loving him … and finally allowing myself to be loved again. For who I was, for who I had been. For the here and the now.

I highly recommend this series to anyone who isn’t afraid to feel. There is tragedy, triumphs, closets full of skeletons, rebuilding friendships and forming new ones, having regrets and moving forward so you won’t have new ones. There are going to be tears, sad and happy ones.

All of the above and more written in such beautiful, poetic way that you will fall immediately head over heels with all things Jessica Topper!

P.S. That little taste of Rick’s story in the very end left me panting for more … September 15th can’t come soon enough!

Okay, so first of all, this review is totally biased because I LOVE Adrian and Kat so much. When I first met them in LOUDER THAN LOVE, I knew their story was something special. So when it was announced that Adrian and Kat were getting a novella about the start of their new life together, I HAD to read it! I was not disappointed.

DEEPER THAN DREAMS is a bridge novella between LOUDER THAN LOVE and SOFTER THAN STEEL (Riff’s book). The story picks up right where the last book left off. Adrian, Kat and her daughter Abbey have settled comfortably in Adrian’s apartment. It’s not called “home” yet but they’re working on it.

The novella is not solely centered on Adrian and Kat though. There’s also a lot of backstory from Adrian's and his bandmate Riff’s pasts as well as their original band, Corroded Corpse.

DEEPER THAN DREAMS was a complete joy to read and I absolutely LOVED the ending! I would highly recommend you read LOUDER THAN LOVE first before tackling this novella. I’m sure you could read it as a standalone but you’d miss the beauty of Adrian and Kat’s courtship.

I’m even MORE excited for the next book in the Love & Steel series, SOFTER THAN STEEL. Riff is a complicated man and I’m very curious about him!

This book starts where Louder Than Love stopped - as in the next minute.

Louder is a favorite book of mine and I was happy to see this Adrian and Kat again. I even went back and read the final chapter to get myself in the right headspace for this novella. I am calling this a novella because it is a rather quick read. It is an easy read as we follow Adrian and Kat in the day after the big concert.

It is an easy plot, nothing earth shattering to rub your nerves. We get to see all our favorite characters from Louder and well maybe find a new character not to like so much.

There is no cliff hanger and I wouldn't even say there is a great set up for the next book. This novella gives us what many of us fans wanted when we finished Louder.

I devoured this novella within 12 hours of it landing on my Kindle - and I can not wait for the next full length book in this series coming out in September!

I received this book from the publisher via NetGalley and this is my honest review.

I loved spending time with Kat and Adrian again! This was such a fun novella to escape into, and I loved how Kat got the fairy tale ending she deserves, complete with a brass knuckle handbag ;) The rocky relationship with Rick and Adrian is so complex and interesting, so I'm really looking forward to seeing what happens with Rick in Softer Than Steel.

This was okay for a novella. Not sure it was worth the $1.99 I paid for it. I am not complaining that it was short, my complaint that it was just an okay read. I have read other novella that left me feeling fulfilled. Not sure why I had to read about the brother and his "relationship" with the BFF.

This was a quick, cute read. I didn't read the first book so I wasn't sure who the characters were but that's okay I adjusted quickly. I'm hoping that some of the other characters get a book like Rick he was an odd fellow that I'd like to know more about.

I'm one of those who enjoy reading the what happens after the Happily Ever After in stories so I mentally jumped up and down with glee when I saw that Adrian and Kat were getting a follow-up novella. Their rocker fairy tale romance is one of my all-time favorite books. This one went quickly and it was somewhat a surprise from what I was expecting.

As this is a follow-up story of sorts, yes, it definitely needs to be read in order. Besides, Louder Than Love, the first book, is a can't miss as far as I'm concerned.

Normally, I'd offer a longer summation of the story, but this one really can be summed up quickly. Adrian wants to give Kat a special day and a surprise evening of her dreams so he does just that by enlisting the aid of some special co-conspirators. While being happy, Kat stews a little wondering if the fairy tale is really just a dream that she will wake up from and if things will fall apart if Adrian goes back on tour. Adrian being Adrian; he knows exactly what his lady librarian needs to feel safe in their love.

This novella is what comes after the big high of success after the band succeeded with their reunion concert and Adrian and Kat also reunited. The story takes it slow as the pamper me day progresses. I thought it was hilarious that each time Kat thought she'd have some sexy time with Adrian, the doorbell would ring again. The middle of the story lagged particularly when they went over the details of how the band came together and its early days. I found it interesting, but also found it an odd thing to tell at this point of the story. But then things sped up both in pace and in intriguing events. This is when I worked out that this novella wasn't just a follow-up to Louder Than Love, but was also an intro to the next story which will be Riff's which made sense of that segue into the band's history.

The heat between Adrian and Kat was sizzling. He is very much the rocker Prince Charming with his passion, his thoughtful acts, and his music making. Kat goes swoony over his lyrics, his sultry charisma, and the way he is with her daughter. His big finale at the end of the story left me grinning like a crazy gal and clutching my melting romance loving heart. Adrian Digger Graves rocks!

All in all, I was super excited to read the novella and it did the job of leaving me eager for the next book. Rocker romance fans really need to give this series a try.

My thanks to Penguin Group for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

I was really looking forward to this epilogue to Adrian and Kat's story....maybe too much. I need to stop reading 1.5 books, they never satisfied me and 90% of the time they pitter out on a pall of disappointment.

I still enjoyed Topper's writing and there are flashes of our original, beloved Adrian here and there but what I didn't enjoy is the feeling that I was being taken for yet another serial ride....I didn't need the Cinderella transformation, (it was not having twaddle like that within it's pages that made Louder Than Love special) it been done to death and these characters were initially the antithesis to all that immature crap. I didn't need pages devoted to a trip down memory lane, we got more than enough of Digger's backstory out of the way in Louder. We ( Kat and Adrian) spend way too much time with other characters surrounding them, and when there's only a limited amount of pages, what you want, as a reader, is for those pages to be devoted to the central characters interactions. The whole world and their friends turned up in a single night. No....Just, no. There were important questions that need to be answers. How will Adrian cope with his Digger alterego? Can a family man be a Rock Star? Can Kat's level-headedness cope with touring madness? Or even the suggestion of? How deep are this couples dreams?

I was left, at the end of reading 1.5, with more question than when I finished 1....Because, to be honest I was satisfied at the end of Louder, if I hadn't had Deeper tickled temptingly under my nose promising me more, I wouldn't have even though there should be...
It seems like a fairytale, but even fairytales have a deeper, darker side. When old habits return to tempt her knight in shining heavy metal armor, will Kat’s happily ever after come crashing back to reality?
...Here we are, question, no answers.

I think I would have enjoyed this more if I would have read it immediately after reading book 1. I think it lost having the epilogue separate. Would have liked his POV.

Short, sweet and very predictable--

This added nothing to Louder than Love. It was a long, rambling novella filled with predictable tropes. Kat was much more annoying and bitchy during this story. And Rick was a jerk, and now I'm not as eager to read his story. And now added to the mix is some evil, hateful witch, who I'm sure will stir the pot in book 2.
