Проковтнула цю книгу за пару днів і дуже шкодую, що не маю продовження. Дуже незвичний світ, нестандартні герої, таємниці, інтриги, пригоди, небезпека. Прекрасна історія-подорож у світі сповненому корейських легенд і поезії❤️

Vaya fumada de libro. Es una auténtica locura que va tomando forma página a página. De verdad que no sé qué me ha sorprendido más pero estoy entre un águila atacando con un cocodrilo de cuatro metros entre las patas y un escarabajo gigante que sirve de montura. Aunque hay mil cosas más del estilo para elegir. En definitiva, un inicio de saga de fantasía muy loca que me ha encantado. Deseando el segundo tomo.

Lee Young-do has created an incredibly rich fantasy setting with unique races that feel wholly distinct, each with their own beliefs, politics, customs and centuries of shared history. Korean folklore and Buddhist philosophy weave naturally through the world giving it a perspective that feels wonderfully fresh. Lush forests, forgotten ruins and impossible landscapes teem with curious creatures, from flying mantas carrying ancient cities to stranger marvels that sometimes veer into the violent and grotesque. Every chapter offers another glimpse into a world brimming with magic, wonder and lore far older than the quest itself.
That quest is, on the surface, comfortingly classic in such a strange world. A disparate group of companions sets out with a common purpose, the journey filled with detours and misadventures while an overarching political mystery gathers momentum. Along the way cultures collide, trust grows between unlikely companions and danger lurks around every turn. It captures the timeless appeal of classic epic fantasy within a world that is refreshingly original. The translation is also superb, evoking the cadence of ancient mythology and while the middle lingers on the journey there's always something wild and curious around the next bend.
However the characters never quite reach the same extraordinary heights, sometimes feeling more like embodiments of their cultures than fully realised individuals. It creates an emotional distance and explorations of friendship across cultural divides, personal identity and morality don't always land with the impact they seem poised to deliver.
Even so, The Heart of the Nhaga is an astonishing feat of imagination. Fantasy is at its best when it makes you feel like an explorer stepping into the unknown. Few fantasy novels capture that sense of wonder so completely.

Set in a vividly imagined world divided between four races, the reptilian Nhaga, the flame-wielding Tokkebifire people, the giant birdlike Rekon, and humans, the story follows a reluctant quest that could decide the fate of the world. A Nhaga ventures north on a mysterious temple mission for the first time in history, accompanied by representatives from each race to guide his journey. Forced to work together despite centuries of distrust and prejudice, the group must survive long enough to reach their destination and uncover the true nature of their mission….
Reading this felt unlike anything else I can remember, it’s a genuinely unique and intriguing read. I was initially drawn in by the Lord of the Rings comparison, which makes sense in terms of the reluctant quest and the mix of races travelling together, but the overall atmosphere and storytelling style feels very different!
The world-building is really strong throughout and I came away with such a clear understanding of Ryun, the Nhaga, and their social structures - all of which were explored in a way that was rich and detailed without becoming overwhelming. The other races were well depicted and interesting too, even if they weren’t explored with quite the same depth yet. Since this is only the first book, though it feels like there’s still a lot of room for those cultures and characters to develop further.
There’s plenty of action and suspense throughout, balanced nicely with moments of dry humour. I also found the writing style strangely hypnotic. The long chapters and constant POV shifts occasionally made the story feel a little dreamlike but in a way that mostly worked for me!
I’m curious about where the next book could go, there’s still much of the journey and many unanswered questions to be explored so I’m excited to see where it goes next!

Wenn ich zukünftig jemanden beim Jammern erwische, dass sich in der Fantasy ja alles wiederholt und nichts Neues mehr zu finden ist, dem*der werde ich von nun an den Auftakt der ‚Die Legende vom Tränenvogel‘-Reihe empfehlen. Der Koreaner Lee Young-do, dessen Bücher sich in seinem Heimatland millionenfach verkauft haben, hat mit ‚Das Blut der Herzlosen‘, übersetzt von Hyuk-Sook Kim und Manfred Selzer, einen unglaublich kreativen Fantasyroman abgeliefert. So anders und faszinierend, meist sehr kurzweilig und immer neu und interessant. Das beginnt bei der Welt, geht weiter bei den Figuren und endet beim Plot. Selten habe ich so eine innovative Geschichte gelesen, mit derart vielen Fantasyelementen, denen ich noch nie begegnet bin. Das liegt vor allem daran, dass Lee Young-do koreanische Mythen, Fabeln, Volkssagen, aber auch kulturelle und gesellschaftliche Aspekte in seine Geschichte hat einfließen lassen, verwoben mit Wesenheiten anderer asiatischer Legenden und Altbekanntem aus westlicher Fantasy.
Es war für mich zu Beginn der Geschichte eine große Herausforderung, die vier Völker, die Lee Young-dos Welt besiedeln, auseinanderzuhalten. Doch nach und nach konnte ich die verschiedenen Merkmale, Eigenarten und Charakterzüge, die Dokebi, Lekon, Naga und Menschen ausmachen, verinnerlichen.
Der Autor bedient sich dabei einer einfachen Sprache, mit vielen humorvollen Stellen und einem Weltenbau, der eher wenig Details aufweist und vieles der eigenen Fantasie überlässt. Der Plot selbst ist gar nicht so umfangreich, aber trotzdem habe ich so viele neue Ideen gelesen, dass das gar nicht wirklich auffällt. Außerdem ist es der Auftakt zu einer vierbändigen Reihe, da darf laut ungeschriebener Regeln noch gar nicht so viel passieren. Man nimmt dafür viel über die vier Völkern und ihrem Miteinander mit. Oder ihrem Nichtmiteinander. Vor allem die Naga lernt man dabei sehr intensiv kennen, deren Art des Matriarchats unglaublich spannend ist und eine toll durchdachte Völkerstruktur liefert. Doch auch die anderen Völker üben ihre eigene Faszination aus und ich freue mich sehr, noch mehr von ihnen zu lesen. Denn weiterlesen werde ich definitiv. Da alle Bände auch noch dieses Jahr erscheinen, habe ich die Hoffnung, die Reihe mit frischer Erinnerung weiterlesen und beenden zu können. Bis dahin empfehle ich den Reihenauftakt all jenen, die auf der Suche nach frischen Ideen in der Fantasy sind und die Lust haben, sich auf eine neue Welt und neue Wesen einzulassen. Ab sofort hat das Jammern ein Ende! 4,5 Sterne.

Тверда четвірка. Книжка приємно почухала всі мої хотілки та очікування від історії. А рецепт успіху тут простий - фентезійна складова повністю заснована на унікальній корейській міфології, яка своєю незвичністю тільки захоплює ще більше, четвірка колоритних персонажів, довга подорож та багато БАГАТО подій (сюжет дуже динамічний), але при цьому вміло тримається на вершині та не стає перенавантаженим. І класне балансування між інтригами, пригодами, гумором, бійками та в деяких сенсам горрором.

OMG, I’ve been such a fool to underestimate this one.
I went into The Heart of the Nhaga worried it would be "too much of a classic fantasy even for me"—and oh boy, was I wrong! It has all the richness of a Tolkien book without the "extra bits" that make it... ahem... a bit long-winded.
If you need a book to reset your fantasy palate, look no further. Here is a breakdown of why this
Asian high fantasy completely blew my mind:
✨ The Prose & Lore
The writing is absolutely beautiful and rich with meaning. It has a distinct, detached style that feels like a brilliant cultural and personality touch rather than a flaw. Plus, there is an endless amount of incredibly deep lore to keep you completely hooked.
🤯 Surreal & Mindbending
The sheer number of times I went "wait, what??" was wild. It throws you into situations so surreal—like the sentient Corpsefall (iykyk)—that you completely forget to be disgusted because your brain is too busy melting from how cool it is.
🛸 Truly Alien Species
Usually, epic quests where protagonists just walk across vast expanses get boring fast. Not here. Every single race is so incredibly distinct and alien—even the human character doesn't feel entirely "human." The dynamic of a giant birdman who is deathly afraid of water, a scholar fire-manipulator, and a Nhaga-eating human forging an alliance is brilliant.
⚔️ Immersive, Meaningful World-Building
You won't find five-page descriptions of trees here! The world-building and characterization are deeply immersive, fresh, and completely different from recent fantasy trends. It can get a bit graphic if you're squeamish, but it never crosses into pointless splatter. In fact, three of the main characters actively try to spare lives in battle when killing would be the easier choice.
It's a masterclass in epic fantasy, translated beautifully into English for the first time by Anton Hur.

I actively try to read books in translation, and I was curious about this novel's promise to be the Tolkien of South Korea. In The Heart of the Nhaga, a reclusive monastery sends three adventurers on a dangerous mission: an impossibly strong bird-man, a trickster fire spirit, and a human man with a mysterious past who's an expert in hunting and eating snakelike Nhaga. Together, they must venture into enemy territory and retrieve a young Nhaga.
Unfortunately, on starting this book, I was reminded of the many elements I dislike in classic fantasy. The Heart of the Nhaga has an almost entirely male cast, spends most of its time describing an extended hiking trip with intermittent fight scenes, and was paced extremely slowly. On occasion, it does have a dry sense of humor--I particularly liked an ongoing bit about beating up poser would-be kings that inexplicably infest the southern grasslands. However! The everything else. There's a major subplot about a woman who goes homicidally insane because no one will get her pregnant. We're assured that the central mission is vitally important, but since it's never revealed over the course of the entire book, the plot lacks a sense of urgency or tension. The characters are as flat as a pancake since they're allotted at most one character trait apiece, such as punching, or lighting things on fire. I admit that I may have been missing some of the nuance here because I'm unfamiliar with the fantasy race tropes for a Rekon or a Tokkebi, but there certainly isn't much depth written on-page. And what worldbuilding exists is a series of bizarre details which fail to establish a coherent sense of place, and feel as if the author is making them up haphazardly as he writes.
Most disappointingly, despite the four hundred plus page sprawl of The Heart of the Nhaga, it ends on a cliffhanger without developing more of a plot that is covered by the synopsis. Not recommended--for high fantasy in translation from Korean, I'd suggest Blood of the Old Kings by Sung-Il Kim.

Серця наґів дуже приємно здивувало. Плюси:
раси незвичні та цікаво змальовані, світ новий і карта до нього детальна, багато корейської міфології, щодо якої є відсилки, пояснення, тлумачення (перекладачу окрема ВЕЛИКА повага).
Сам сюжет доволі простий і не оригінальний, але герої колоритні, я б сказала, що саме вони є рушіями взагалі нашого з вами просування по сюжету, і загалом цікавості щодо того, що ж буде з ними далі, як вони здолають перепони і розрулять спірні ситуації.
Тут є таємне минуле, нерозкриті таємниці, монахи, різні боги, складні сімейні відносини, вимерлі раси, пророцтва, гештальти, місія порятунку світу... і дракон)
Гумор непоганий, однак місцями трохи недолугий.
Сюжетні повороти бували неочікувані і, на жаль, часом від того необґрунтовані та незрозумілі.
До якогось конкретного героя так і не пройнялася особливою симпатією. А от обурення, несхвалення багато, хто викликав.

Само (ім'я) ... ну це просто якась вперта до безглуздя і абсурду наґиня.

Це тетралогія. Повторюся: якість перекладу ШИКАРНА.
Чекаю на другу книгу, на яку мають вже от-от відкрити ПЕРЕДЗАМОВЛЕННЯ.

Сам сюжет доволі простий і не оригінальний, але герої колоритні, я б сказала, що саме вони є рушіями взагалі нашого з вами просування по сюжету, і загалом цікавості щодо того, що ж буде з ними далі, як вони здолають перепони і розрулять спірні ситуації.
Тут є таємне минуле, нерозкриті таємниці, монахи, різні боги, складні сімейні відносини, вимерлі раси, пророцтва, гештальти, місія порятунку світу... і дракон)
Гумор непоганий, однак місцями трохи недолугий.
Сюжетні повороти бували неочікувані і, на жаль, часом від того необґрунтовані та незрозумілі.
До якогось конкретного героя так і не пройнялася особливою симпатією. А от обурення, несхвалення багато, хто викликав.

Кейґан дуже мудрий і ДУЖЕ мутний тіпчік з моторошною дієтою та філософією, яку я поки ніяк не змогла збагнути і це мене тіліпає.
Рюн... слинявий підліток з гострою високоморальністю, яка дивна, як для його раси.
Само (ім'я) ... ну це просто якась вперта до безглуздя і абсурду наґиня.
ЗАГАЛОМ мені сподобалося.
Це тетралогія. Повторюся: якість перекладу ШИКАРНА.
Чекаю на другу книгу, на яку мають вже от-от відкрити ПЕРЕДЗАМОВЛЕННЯ.

Sie schneiden sich die Herzen heraus, um nicht getötet werden zu können und innerhalb der Naga-Gesellschaft gibt es viele Intrigen, die die Mission deutlich erschweren.
In „Das Blut der Herzlosen“ verwebt der Autor geschickt westliche Tropes der Fantasy-Literatur, mit einem Worldbuilding, welches von der koreanischen Mythologie inspiriert wurde. Diese Mischung gelingt perfekt und fällt nur auf, wenn man genauer hinsieht. Die Geschichte selbst kann sehr ähnlich in vielen klassischen Fantasybüchern gefunden werden, doch statt auf Elfen und Zwerge trifft man hier etwa auf Lekons – riesige Krieger in der Gestalt von Hähnen.
Die Spezies, die ich am spannendsten fand, waren ganz klar die Nagas. Von diesen sah man im Buch, im Gegensatz zu den anderen Spezies, sehr viel von den kulturellen Eigenschaften und die gesellschaftliche Ordnung. Die Nagas leben größtenteils in einem Matriarchat und auch wenn ich dieses nicht als konsequent umgesetzt empfunden habe, mochte ich es generell, immer mehr über die Lebensweise dieser Wesen zu erfahren.
Neben dem extrem spannenden Worldbuilding blieb der Rest des Buches aber leider eher blass. Dies lag für mich vor allem am Schreibstil – das Buch las sich generell eher sperrig und distanziert. Insbesondere Konversationen litten darunter. Oft klangen Gespräche sehr gestelzt und unnatürlich.
Die Folge war für mich vor allem, dass ich keine wirkliche Verbindung zu den Charakteren aufbauen konnte. Die Rettungstruppe war zusammengesetzt aus so unterschiedlichen Spezies, die alle interessante Eigenheiten hatten. Trotzdem fiel es mir sehr lange Zeit schwer, diese Charaktere auseinanderzuhalten, weil viel zu wenig auf eben diese Eigenheiten eingegangen wurde.
Trotz dieser Kritik habe ich das Buch als vielversprechenden Auftakt für diese vierteilige Reihe wahrgenommen. Insbesondere das spannende Ende und einige interessante Ideen, welche bereits aufkamen und hoffentlich in der Zukunft weiterbehandelt werden, haben mich überzeugen können, der Reihe noch eine Chance zu geben.

Цікавий світ, незвичні створіння, але на цьому завершуються плюси. Сюжет до банальності простий, герої не тримають у фокусі подій, а діалоги викликають нудьгу. Можливо у форматі ігрового світу це буде класна річ, але з книгою щось геть ніяк.
Сподіваюсь, у вас буде кращий досвід з цією книгою.

Мені дуже сподобалася книга, історія відчувається одночасно класичною і максимально самобутньою. Типу, камон, збирається абсолютно різношерсна команда, а далі роад фентезі, типу що може бути банальніше за це. Але в цей же час виконання абсолютно унікальне і незвичне для читача що споживає західне фентезі. Дуже цікавий світ, персонажі, те як історія стрибає від якоїсь істерично смішної Пратчетовської битви до просто якогось Лавкрафтівського жаху.

Everything sounded so magical and I loved hearing about the different cultures and people in this world. ✨️ Apart from that I couldn't connect to any of our protagonists or antagonists even and that bothered me because I had high hopes for this book. While it didn't blow me away like I expected I'm still gonna read the next books because the world is so beautiful and interesting. 🐯

Ця неймовірна книга — фентезі, але без звичних нам магів, ельфів, вовкулак, драконів та інших стандартних мешканців вигаданих світів. У світі корейського письменника Лі Йондо поряд із людьми живуть зовсім незнайомі нам істоти. Наприклад, холоднокровні людинозмії наґи, здатні спілкуватися подумки, регенерувати своє тіло й жити без сердець. Або здоровенні лекони — укриті пір’ям воїни з півнячими головами й мріями підкорити небоплава. Небоплави, до речі, — це гігантські рибини, що літають у небі. На їхніх спинах стоять рештки давніх міст. Кажуть, там зберігається багато скарбів, однак ніхто в цьому ще не пересвідчився на власні очі.
У цьому світі є високі гори й спекотні пустелі. Росте величезний ліс із могутніми деревами, який охороняє наґів, а наґи охороняють його. На великих їздових жуках літають веселі добродушні доккебі — ще одні мешканці цього світу, здатні створювати чарівний вогонь. А десь у забутих усіма місці й місті існують дуоксіни — бо життям існування залишків племені, яке втратило бога, назвати не можна.
За богів тут служать чотири стихії — основа чи не всіх міфологій світу. Тут узагалі використано багато корейських міфів, а ще — поезії. Тут дуже цікаво трактується потреба людей мати над собою короля. Хоча почекайте-но — про це йдеться уже в другій книзі серії, яка лише готується до друку (ага, я її вже прочитала — переваги роботи у видавництві 🙂 ).
І того — я збагнула, що збрехала на початку допису: дракони в цьому світі все-таки існують. Точніше, лише один — він проріс із не знайденого ніким драконокореня, пустив листочки й навіть квітку, а потім розплющив очі, бо його любили. Так, усе до біса заплутано, майже нічого не зрозуміло з моєї розповіді, проте повірте: це дуже, дуже цікаво!

Мало, значить, мені було "Беззоряної корони", на другу частину якої я чекаю, шо той Хатіко, так тепер ще й на продовження "Серця наґів" чекати 😑
🦇🦇 Епічне фентезі, засноване на корейській міфології, яке, попри традиційне "четверо героїв йдуть через півсвіту рятувати решту півсвіту" виглядає як щось свіже й незвичайне саме з-за своєї корейськості 💀
🌌 Нема сенсу розповідати сюжет: це буквально тревел-фентезі, де трьом біологічно різним істотам треба об'єднатися і виконати ролю пророцтва, а саме — привести в храм четвертого. Нащо і що буде, якщо нє, толком не пояснюється, але ж це корейщина, в пророцтві сказано, значить виконуємо.
🐱 Істоти дуже різні і в цілому навіть ворогуючі між собою.
💎 Людина із складною долею та унікальним мечем з легенд.
💎 Лекон — велетень із головою півня, що боїться води, але може видирати дерева з корінням голіруч і кидатися ними в орлів.
💎 Доккебі — людиноподібна істота, що вміє робити вогонь і не помирає, коли помирає.
💎 Наґ — змієподібна холоднокровна майже безсмертна раса, які хотіли колись завоювати світ, але мерзнуть насмерть вище певної паралелі.
💎 А потім там ще й з'являється дракон
👁 Цікавості пригодам цих дуже яскравих персонажів додає міфологічний колорит (робота редактора з примітками просто блискуча!) і місцями незвичний, але дійсно смішний гумор. Чого вартує діалог, наприклад:
— Чого вони мовчки витріщаються один на одного?
— В них мислемовлення, вони говорять думками.
— А чого так довго?
— Слухай, це його сестра, яка женеться за ним аби вбити, в них все складно, дай їм час.
🔭 Але найголовніше, що є в книзі, а точніше, чого нема — так це русні. Уявляєте, 500+ сторінок і жодної тобі згадки про толстоєвщину. Хоча бачите ж, теж все складно і загадошні назькі души, ага.

Це саме така дивна ситуація, коли я не знаю, що написати про щойно дочитану книгу.
З одного боку, мені справді сподобався химерний світ, де все відбувається, зацікавили раси, які його населяють, їхні філософські та міфологічні системи, здивували їхні звичаї, які на голову не налазять, а з іншого боку обурив вражаюче нестравний сюжет - таке собі road movieз елементами RPG-гри з натягнутими на неї (на них), наче сова на глобус, пригодами. Я вкрай рідко таке пишу про прочитані книги, але мені було банально нудно.
І саме тому мушу прочитати продовження, коли воно вийде, адже хочу дати автору шанс реабілітуватися в моїх очах.
В той самий час, обкладинка до україномовного видання — прям топова і потішили зноски у тексті, де пояснюються всілякі аспекти корейської міфології та культури.

Il cuore dei Naga è una ventata d’aria fresca nel fantasy mondiale.
L’originale compagnia di protagonisti e le razze ispirate al folklore coreano sono l’elemento più affascinante del libro. La trama manca un po’ di slancio, ma essendo il primo volume di una saga ci si può aspettare che migliori.
Prego davvero che Feltrinelli decida di tradurre e pubblicare i seguiti perché non possiamo restare senza.

I saw 'Korean Tolkien' in the hypothesis and thought that maybe Lee Yeong-Do could get me out of my fantasy slump. I fear that was too great a feat for the dear man. Korean and Asian mythology is so different in so many ways from prose and storytelling style to characters and plots from my own; sometimes it's a tough pill to swallow. This was hot tea, then it was cold tea.

я маю одну проблему з цією книгою. а саме - персонажі. вони наче належать до різних рас і мають інші світогляди, але читаючи цю історію, ти цього майже не помічаєш. чому? бо те, як вони говорять, мислять і поводяться, зовсім не відрізняє їх одне від одного. цій історії дуже бракує конфлікту між героями. їх об’єднує спільна місія, і всі одразу погоджуються її виконувати - бо так сказали монахи якогось храму. чому це важливо, у чому суть завдання - ні ми, ні персонажі не розуміємо. окей, елемент загадковості, мені це навіть подобається. але ці четверо героїв, на жаль, позбавлені будь-якої внутрішньої напруги. я не розумію, чому, коли текст каже, що наги не люблять доккебі, я зовсім не відчуваю цього у їхніх стосунках. через конфлікти персонажі мали б розкриватися, щоб читач міг їм співпереживати. а тут я не відчувала нічого, бо вони всі - ніби порожні оболонки. лекон кукарікає, наг мислемовить, доккебі жартує., але цього недостатньо! лише Кейган Драккар хоч трохи вирізнявся. але те як він просто вказує іншим, що робити й куди йти, і всі його беззастережно слухають. не знаю, я хотіла бачити щось інакше, і я не отримала цього.
на відміну від пласких персонажів, сюжет мені більш-менш сподобався. принаймні спочатку. але останні відсотків 20% далися важко.
мені справді сподобався епізод з нагами, до того як рюн залишив їхнє село. от там світобудова розкрилася найкраще - через події, конфлікт і зав’язку. чудово вибудувана частина. але цього замало, щоб я захотіла взятися за другу книгу.

…. tohle je jedna z věcí, u který si vůbec nejsem jistá, jak hodnotit.
Dějově je to typická putovačka zasazená do zajímavého prostředí. Rozdílnost ras, nutnost spolupracovat, božstva, postupně a poskrovnu se vykreslující svět, poslání, které do konce zůstává zahaleno v tajemném oparu a nakonec je to nádherně vyvedeno na papíře.
Ale nevím, nevím, jestli jsem dostala od postav tolik, kolik jsem potřebovala. Keigon Draka zůstává tajemný jako hrad v Karpatech. Tajemný tím zajímavým způsobem, ale přesto bych potřebovala o kapku víc. Zbytek postav se zatím jen opírá o základní charakteristiku dané rasy. Ale říkám si, že jsem zatím jen na prahu tohoto příběhu, že to možná ještě přijde. Protože vždy, když je nějaký prostor na hloubání, hodí do toho autor vidle v podobě nějaké podivnůstky, která může a zároveň nemusí být zajímavá. Obdobně na tom je stránka humoru. Nejsem si jistá, jestli tyhle dvě věci dokážu ocenit, protože mám za to, že vycházejí z kultury, smýšlení a mytologie, jenž jsem zatím blíže nepoznala a možná na této úrovni ani nikdy nepoznám.
Každopádně to za něco určitě zatáhlo a dvojce se bránit nebudu.
Zvědavost mi trochu škrábe na dveře.
Tak jí je pootevřu.

Protože vždy, když je nějaký prostor na hloubání, hodí do toho autor vidle v podobě nějaké podivnůstky, která může a zároveň nemusí být zajímavá. Obdobně na tom je stránka humoru. Nejsem si jistá, jestli tyhle dvě věci dokážu ocenit, protože mám za to, že vycházejí z kultury, smýšlení a mytologie, jenž jsem zatím blíže nepoznala a možná na této úrovni ani nikdy nepoznám.
Každopádně to za něco určitě zatáhlo a dvojce se bránit nebudu.

Wir befinden uns hier in einer zwei geteilten Welt, die im Norden ein typisches Ambiente von Bergen, Wäldern und Ebenen aufweist und die drei Völker der Menschen, Dokebi und Lekon beheimatet, während im Süden ein riesiger, heißer Dschungel von den Nagas beherrscht wird. Sie leben in einem Matriarchat, das die Männer hauptsächlich zur Fortpflanzung nutzt, außer sie treten in ein Novizentum ein.
Ich fand es extrem spannend mehr über dieses Volk zu erfahren, ihre Eigenheiten, ihre speziellen Eigenschaften und Umgangsformen - man erfährt auch schon einiges über kleine Intrigen zwischen den Familien und große Verschwörungen, die aber erst nach und nach ans Licht kommen und mit dem Auftrag der drei Reisenden zusammenhängt.
Über die Menschen erfährt man noch recht wenig.

Die Lekon sind auch sehr speziell, allein ihre Größe mit bis zu 3 Metern ist eindrucksvoll, ebenfalls ihr Hahnenkopf und ihr Federkleid. Sie sind eher einfach gestrickt und einem guten Kampf nicht abgeneigt - haben allerdings Todesangst vor Wasser.
Ein geheimer Auftrag führt den Menschen Kaygon Draka, den Dokebi Bihyung und den Lekon Tinahan in der "Letzten Taverne" zusammen. Wie der Name schon vermuten lässt, der letzte Halt vor der südlichen Wüste, die nach Kiboren führt, den von den Nagas beherrschten Dschungel.

Allerdings fühlt er sich der Gruppe sehr verbunden, auch wenn ihr nur eine reiche Belohnung zu diesem Auftrag gelockt hat, ist er über die Zeit mit dem Schicksal seiner Gefährten zusammen gewachsen. Etwas schlicht, etwas naiv, aber ich mochte ihn.
Trotz der zielführenden Reise, wie sie so oft in dem Genre vorkommt, bleibt die Handlung nicht geradlinig. Viele Zwischenfälle und Ereignisse führen die Gefährten auf Umwege - und hier darf man nicht ungeduldig sein, denn der Autor erzählt auch diese mit viel Liebe zum Detail. Inwieweit diese alle wirklich von Bedeutung sind kann ich noch nicht einschätzen. Aber es gibt darin schon Situationen, die für das weitere Vorgehen wichtig sind bzw. auch die Hintergründe der Welt und der Völker beleuchten. Dadurch bekommt man einen immer tieferen Einblick, in dem alles gut durchdacht erscheint.
Ein paar Punkte waren für mich dennoch nicht so logisch - zum Beispiel die Kälte im Norden, die die Nagas anscheinend doch irgendwie überleben können. Zum anderen wie ein 3 Meter großer Lekon so einfach in ein Gästezimmer passt ^^
Ansonsten greift aber sehr gut alles ineinander und auch auch wenn vieles etwas emotionslos wirkt - gerade manche Kampfszenen, die durchaus blutig oder grotesk sind, hat mich die Erzählweise doch sehr gefesselt. Ein großes Auf und Ab an Spannung sollte man aber nicht erwarten... ein paar Momente gab es für mich, wo ich ein höheres Tempo bevorzugt hätte, aber insgesamt hat es mich großartig unterhalten. Auch durch die vielen originellen Ideen, die ich so noch nicht kannte.
Die ganze Welt fühlt sich durchdrungen an von Magie. Es gibt ja gewisse Fähigkeiten, die die einzelnen Spezies besitzen, aber auch sonst wirkt manches unwirklich oder bizarr. Der Autor hat ganz besondere Einfälle, die sich nicht in Zaubersprüchen, Runen, Elementen oder ähnlichem offenbaren, sondern wirklich sehr speziell und eigenartig: dadurch für mich erfrischend neu und ungewöhnlich.
Der Schreibstil wirkt ungewöhnlich und manchmal etwas umständlich. Das Gefühl hab ich aber öfter bei Übersetzungen aus Asien - ich könnte mir vorstellen, dass hier der Text nicht so einfach ins deutsche übertragbar ist. Wenn man sich daran gewöhnt hat lässt es sich aber flüssig zu lesen. Der Autor beschreibt sehr bildlich, hauptsächlich die Schauplätze, die Atmosphäre und die Ereignisse werden lebendig beschrieben und haben mich immer direkt am Geschehen teilhaben lassen. Die Figuren waren für mich vor allem durch ihre Gefühle und Gedanken greifbar - vom Aussehen her hab ich nur den Lekon mit dem Hahnenkopf vor Augen gehabt :D

Wem normale Fantasy Romane mittlerweile zu langweilig sind, ist hier wahrscheinlich gut aufgehoben. Für mich war es teilweise etwas zu wild, obwohl es auch sehr viel Spaß gemacht hat die Welt und ihre verschiedenen Völker zu entdecken und ihre Heldenquest zu verfolgen.

Die vielen Unbekannten mythologische Wesen, Bezeichnungen & Namen haben es für mich leider etwas schwer gemacht, so richtig in Lesefluss zu kommen und zu bleiben.
Das war wirklich mal was gänzlich anderes und erfrischendes - sofern man ansonsten vorwiegend westlich geprägte Fantasy-Literatur gewohnt ist.
Die vielen Unbekannten mythologische Wesen, Bezeichnungen & Namen haben es für mich leider etwas schwer gemacht, so richtig in Lesefluss zu kommen und zu bleiben.

Questo libro, uscito in Italia nel 2023, è passato piuttosto in sordina. Io l'ho scoperto per caso grazie alla recensione di un'amica su Instagram e sono stata subito incuriosita dal paragone con Il Signore degli Anelli. Dopo averlo letto, posso dire che il confronto ha senso sotto alcuni aspetti, come la missione intrapresa da un gruppo eterogeneo di personaggi, il viaggio attraverso territori ostili e la presenza di diverse razze, ma l'atmosfera e la narrazione sono decisamente diversi.
Il romanzo si apre con una sorta di profezia, un elemento che potrebbe sembrare il classico cliché fantasy, ma che qui viene reinterpretato in modo interessante:
“Per affrontare uno sono necessari tre: un ricercatore, un fattucchiere e un attaccante.”
Da questa premessa prende il via una missione di salvataggio che vede coinvolti rappresentanti delle diverse razze che popolano il mondo dell'Uccello che beve lacrime. L'obiettivo è recuperare un Naga, Ryun Pei, e scortarlo fino a un tempio. I Naga sono umanoidi rettiliani a sangue freddo che comunicano telepaticamente attraverso il Nibilo, e il gruppo incaricato della missione comprende un cacciatore umano di Naga (Keigon Draca), un Tokkebi pacifista dotato di magia del fuoco (Pihyong) e un potente guerriero Rekkon (Tinahan). Durante il viaggio, si scopre gradualmente il mondo, le relazioni tra le varie specie e i sistemi di valori che regolano la loro convivenza, il tutto fortemente influenzato dalla mitologia e dalla cultura coreana.
Il vero punto di forza del libro è senza dubbio il worldbuilding. L'autore dedica grande attenzione alla costruzione delle quattro razze principali, esplorandone non solo la cultura e l'organizzazione sociale, ma persino aspetti biologici che influenzano concretamente la trama. Mi ha ricordato, per certi versi, il modo in cui alcuni videogiochi fantasy differenziano le varie specie attribuendo loro punti di forza e limiti specifici. In questo primo volume vengono esplorati soprattutto i Nhaga, la loro società, mentre le altre razze, pur risultando interessanti, sembrano ancora avere ampio margine di esplorazione nei volumi successivi.
I personaggi, invece, mi hanno lasciata più combattuta. In generale non li ho trovati particolarmente approfonditi. Tra quelli meglio riusciti ci sono stati sicuramente Ryun, Keigon Draca e Samo Pei (la sorella di Ryun). Al contrario, mi aspettavo molto di più dai membri della compagnia che affronta il viaggio, in particolare Tinahan e Piunhyun. Avrei voluto vedere un maggiore approfondimento delle loro motivazioni, dei loro rapporti reciproci e delle dinamiche interne al gruppo. Purtroppo spesso risultano piuttosto passivi e finiscono per seguire le decisioni di Keigon senza mettere realmente in discussione ciò che accade. Spero che nei seguiti venga dato loro maggiore spazio.
Anche i dialoghi mi hanno lasciato sensazioni contrastanti. A volte li ho trovati solenni e suggestivi, altre volte un po' privi di mordente. Non so quanto questo dipenda dalla traduzione, dalla struttura originale dell'opera o da un diverso approccio narrativo legato alla tradizione letteraria coreana, ma è un aspetto che ho notato più volte durante la lettura.
Per quanto riguarda la storia, il cuore del romanzo è il viaggio che conduce il gruppo dal caldo sud, patria dei Naga, verso il freddo nord. A questa trama principale si affiancano alcune storyline parallele legate agli intrighi politici tra umani e Naga, che contribuiscono ad arricchire il contesto e a dare maggiore profondità al mondo narrativo.
Bisogna però tenere presente che il romanzo nasce come web novel, proprio come Dragon Raja, altra opera dello stesso autore. E questa origine, secondo me, si percepisce. Quando vengono introdotti nuovi concetti, questi tendono a essere spiegati molto nel dettaglio, e qua e là ho avvertito alcune ripetizioni che avrebbero potuto essere "limate" in fase editoriale. Avrei gradito un lavoro maggiore di uniformazione del ritmo e della struttura, soprattutto considerando il potenziale enorme della storia.
Nonostante questi aspetti tecnici, però, mi sono trovata costantemente immersa nel mondo e nella storia. Ho sempre avuto voglia di sapere cosa sarebbe successo dopo, di seguire la missione e di scoprire qualcosa in più sulle diverse razze e sulle loro relazioni.
In conclusione, questo è un fantasy che consiglio soprattutto a chi ama i mondi complessi e multiculturali, dove il focus è posto sulle differenze etniche, religiose e sociali tra specie diverse. Pur avendo alcuni limiti nella caratterizzazione e nel ritmo, riesce a costruire un universo originale e affascinante che invoglia a proseguire la serie.
Segnalo anche che da questo romanzo nascerà anche un videogioco: Project Windless, un action RPG single-player attualmente in sviluppo presso KRAFTON Montréal Studio.

I discovered it by chance thanks to a friend's review on Instagram and was immediately intrigued by the comparison to The Lord of the Rings. After reading it, I can see where the comparison comes from: the quest undertaken by a diverse group of characters, the journey through hostile lands, and the presence of multiple races. That said, the atmosphere and storytelling feel very different.
The novel opens with what appears to be a prophecy, a classic fantasy trope, but one that is given an interesting twist here: "To face one, three are needed: a seeker, a sorcerer, and an attacker."
From this premise begins a rescue mission involving representatives of the different races inhabiting the world of The Bird That Drinks Tears. The goal is to find a Nhaga named Ryun Pei and escort him to a temple. The Nhaga are cold-blooded reptilian humanoids who communicate telepathically through the Neaming, and the rescue party consists of a human Nhaga hunter (Keigon Draka), a pacifist Tokkebi with fire magic (Pihyong), and a powerful Rekkon warrior (Tinahan). As the journey unfolds, the reader gradually learns about the world, the relationships between its races, and the systems of values that govern their coexistence, all of which are heavily influenced by Korean mythology and culture.
The book's greatest strength is undoubtedly its worldbuilding. The author devotes considerable attention to the four main races, exploring not only their cultures and social structures but also biological traits that have a direct impact on the story. In some ways, it reminded me of fantasy RPGs, where each race has its own strengths, weaknesses, and unique characteristics. This first volume focuses primarily on the Nhaga and their society, while the other races, although intriguing, still seem to have plenty of room for exploration in future installments.
The characters, on the other hand, left me with more mixed feelings. Overall, I didn't find them particularly deep or nuanced. The most successful ones were undoubtedly Ryun, Keigon Draka, and Samo Pei (Ryun's sister). By contrast, I expected much more from the members of the traveling party, particularly Tinahan and Pihyong. I would have liked a deeper exploration of their motivations, their relationships with one another, and the group's internal dynamics. Unfortunately, they often come across as rather passive, mostly following Keigon's decisions without questioning them. Hopefully, the sequels will give them more room to grow.
The dialogue also left me conflicted. At times I found it solemn and evocative; at others, it lacked impact and emotional weight. I'm not sure whether this is due to the translation, the original format of the work, or a different narrative approach rooted in Korean literary traditions, but it was something I noticed repeatedly throughout the novel.
As for the story itself, its core is the journey from the warm southern lands of the Nhaga to the frozen north. Alongside this main storyline are several parallel plots involving political intrigues among both humans and Nhaga, which enrich the setting and add further depth to the world.
It's worth keeping in mind that the novel originally began as a web novel, much like Dragon Raja, another work by the same author. And, in my opinion, that origin shows. Whenever new concepts are introduced, they tend to be explained in great detail, and I noticed a number of repetitions that could have benefited from tighter editing. Given the immense potential of the story, I would have appreciated a stronger effort to streamline the pacing and overall structure.
Despite these technical issues, however, I found myself consistently immersed in the world and invested in the story. I always wanted to know what would happen next, to follow the group's mission, and to learn more about the various races and the relationships between them.
Overall, this is a fantasy novel that I would particularly recommend to readers who enjoy complex, multicultural worlds where ethnic, religious, and social differences between races play a central role. While it has some weaknesses in characterization and pacing, it succeeds in creating an original and fascinating setting that makes me want to continue the series.
It's also worth noting that the novel is being adapted into a video game: Project Windless, a single-player action RPG currently in development by KRAFTON Montréal Studio.

I Naga sono umanoidi rettiliani a sangue freddo che comunicano telepaticamente attraverso il Nibilo, e il gruppo incaricato della missione comprende un cacciatore umano di Naga (Keigon Draca), un Tokkebi pacifista dotato di magia del fuoco (Pihyong) e un potente guerriero Rekkon (Tinahan). Durante il viaggio, si scopre gradualmente il mondo, le relazioni tra le varie specie e i sistemi di valori che regolano la loro convivenza, il tutto fortemente influenzato dalla mitologia e dalla cultura coreana.
Il vero punto di forza del libro è senza dubbio il worldbuilding. L'autore dedica grande attenzione alla costruzione delle quattro razze principali, esplorandone non solo la cultura e l'organizzazione sociale, ma persino aspetti biologici che influenzano concretamente la trama. Mi ha ricordato, per certi versi, il modo in cui alcuni videogiochi fantasy differenziano le varie specie attribuendo loro punti di forza e limiti specifici. In questo primo volume vengono esplorati soprattutto i Nhaga, la loro società, mentre le altre razze, pur risultando interessanti, sembrano ancora avere ampio margine di esplorazione nei volumi successivi.
I personaggi, invece, mi hanno lasciata più combattuta. In generale non li ho trovati particolarmente approfonditi. Tra quelli meglio riusciti ci sono stati sicuramente Ryun, Keigon Draca e Samo Pei (la sorella di Ryun). Al contrario, mi aspettavo molto di più dai membri della compagnia che affronta il viaggio, in particolare Tinahan e Piunhyun. Avrei voluto vedere un maggiore approfondimento delle loro motivazioni, dei loro rapporti reciproci e delle dinamiche interne al gruppo. Purtroppo spesso risultano piuttosto passivi e finiscono per seguire le decisioni di Keigon senza mettere realmente in discussione ciò che accade. Spero che nei seguiti venga dato loro maggiore spazio.
Anche i dialoghi mi hanno lasciato sensazioni contrastanti. A volte li ho trovati solenni e suggestivi, altre volte un po' privi di mordente. Non so quanto questo dipenda dalla traduzione, dalla struttura originale dell'opera o da un diverso approccio narrativo legato alla tradizione letteraria coreana, ma è un aspetto che ho notato più volte durante la lettura.
Per quanto riguarda la storia, il cuore del romanzo è il viaggio che conduce il gruppo dal caldo sud, patria dei Naga, verso il freddo nord. A questa trama principale si affiancano alcune storyline parallele legate agli intrighi politici tra umani e Naga, che contribuiscono ad arricchire il contesto e a dare maggiore profondità al mondo narrativo.
Bisogna però tenere presente che il romanzo nasce come web novel, proprio come Dragon Raja, altra opera dello stesso autore. E questa origine, secondo me, si percepisce. Quando vengono introdotti nuovi concetti, questi tendono a essere spiegati molto nel dettaglio, e qua e là ho avvertito alcune ripetizioni che avrebbero potuto essere "limate" in fase editoriale. Avrei gradito un lavoro maggiore di uniformazione del ritmo e della struttura, soprattutto considerando il potenziale enorme della storia.
Nonostante questi aspetti tecnici, però, mi sono trovata costantemente immersa nel mondo e nella storia. Ho sempre avuto voglia di sapere cosa sarebbe successo dopo, di seguire la missione e di scoprire qualcosa in più sulle diverse razze e sulle loro relazioni.
In conclusione, questo è un fantasy che consiglio soprattutto a chi ama i mondi complessi e multiculturali, dove il focus è posto sulle differenze etniche, religiose e sociali tra specie diverse. Pur avendo alcuni limiti nella caratterizzazione e nel ritmo, riesce a costruire un universo originale e affascinante che invoglia a proseguire la serie.
Segnalo anche che da questo romanzo nascerà anche un videogioco: Project Windless, un action RPG single-player attualmente in sviluppo presso KRAFTON Montréal Studio.

I discovered it by chance thanks to a friend's review on Instagram and was immediately intrigued by the comparison to The Lord of the Rings. After reading it, I can see where the comparison comes from: the quest undertaken by a diverse group of characters, the journey through hostile lands, and the presence of multiple races. That said, the atmosphere and storytelling feel very different.
The novel opens with what appears to be a prophecy, a classic fantasy trope, but one that is given an interesting twist here: "To face one, three are needed: a seeker, a sorcerer, and an attacker."
From this premise begins a rescue mission involving representatives of the different races inhabiting the world of The Bird That Drinks Tears. The goal is to find a Nhaga named Ryun Pei and escort him to a temple. The Nhaga are cold-blooded reptilian humanoids who communicate telepathically through the Neaming, and the rescue party consists of a human Nhaga hunter (Keigon Draka), a pacifist Tokkebi with fire magic (Pihyong), and a powerful Rekkon warrior (Tinahan). As the journey unfolds, the reader gradually learns about the world, the relationships between its races, and the systems of values that govern their coexistence, all of which are heavily influenced by Korean mythology and culture.
The book's greatest strength is undoubtedly its worldbuilding. The author devotes considerable attention to the four main races, exploring not only their cultures and social structures but also biological traits that have a direct impact on the story. In some ways, it reminded me of fantasy RPGs, where each race has its own strengths, weaknesses, and unique characteristics. This first volume focuses primarily on the Nhaga and their society, while the other races, although intriguing, still seem to have plenty of room for exploration in future installments.
The characters, on the other hand, left me with more mixed feelings. Overall, I didn't find them particularly deep or nuanced. The most successful ones were undoubtedly Ryun, Keigon Draka, and Samo Pei (Ryun's sister). By contrast, I expected much more from the members of the traveling party, particularly Tinahan and Pihyong. I would have liked a deeper exploration of their motivations, their relationships with one another, and the group's internal dynamics. Unfortunately, they often come across as rather passive, mostly following Keigon's decisions without questioning them. Hopefully, the sequels will give them more room to grow.
The dialogue also left me conflicted. At times I found it solemn and evocative; at others, it lacked impact and emotional weight. I'm not sure whether this is due to the translation, the original format of the work, or a different narrative approach rooted in Korean literary traditions, but it was something I noticed repeatedly throughout the novel.
As for the story itself, its core is the journey from the warm southern lands of the Nhaga to the frozen north. Alongside this main storyline are several parallel plots involving political intrigues among both humans and Nhaga, which enrich the setting and add further depth to the world.
It's worth keeping in mind that the novel originally began as a web novel, much like Dragon Raja, another work by the same author. And, in my opinion, that origin shows. Whenever new concepts are introduced, they tend to be explained in great detail, and I noticed a number of repetitions that could have benefited from tighter editing. Given the immense potential of the story, I would have appreciated a stronger effort to streamline the pacing and overall structure.
Despite these technical issues, however, I found myself consistently immersed in the world and invested in the story. I always wanted to know what would happen next, to follow the group's mission, and to learn more about the various races and the relationships between them.
Overall, this is a fantasy novel that I would particularly recommend to readers who enjoy complex, multicultural worlds where ethnic, religious, and social differences between races play a central role. While it has some weaknesses in characterization and pacing, it succeeds in creating an original and fascinating setting that makes me want to continue the series.
It's also worth noting that the novel is being adapted into a video game: Project Windless, a single-player action RPG currently in development by KRAFTON Montréal Studio.

Juhokórejský spisovateľ Lee Young-do sa od prvej strany prejavuje ako skúsený rozprávač. Dokáže vhodne nakombinovať vysvetľovanie, budovanie atmosféry, zákonitosti sveta i akciu. Pomalšie okamihy striedajú tie svižnejšie. Čitateľ teda nemá pocit zahltenosti a odpovede dostáva vtedy, keď ich naozaj potrebuje.
V príbehu je teda naraz budované nielen prostredie, ale aj zápletka. No ukazuje sa, že tá je pomerne jednoduchá. Ústredným motívom je klasická dobrodružná výprava. Príslušníci rôznych národov majú splniť misiu. Tou je dostať jedného z nich na presne určené miesto. Jednoduchá úloha, ktorej naplneniu prekážajú mnohé faktory. Napriek spomenutému ale kniha nepôsobí tuctovo alebo predvídateľne.
Sviežosť tomuto putovateľskému námetu dodáva spracovaný folklór. Autor hojne vychádza z nielen z kórejskej mytológie, ale aj histórie. Na tomto základe vytvoril svet, v ktorom žijú štyri rôzne národy pod dohľadom štyroch božstiev. Nájdeme tu ľudí, ale aj nágov, tokkebi alebo rekonov.
Každá rasa má pritom vlastný rebríček hodnôt, odlišné myslenie a aj výzor. Niektorí sa ešte ponášajú na ľudí, iní ich v ničom nepripomínajú. Nehovoriac o rôznorodých stvoreniach, ktoré na svojich potulkách protagonisti stretnú. Lee ale všetkým venoval rovnakú pozornosť a vštepil im čosi vlastné, osobité. Tuzemský čitateľ to asi najviac zaznamená pri nágoch, ktorí, ak sa už niekde objavia, tak v podobe hadích démonov. Avšak v tomto prípade ide o šupinatý národ s matriarchálnou mocenskou štruktúrou.
Navyše sa nágovia prejavujú ako pomyslený katalyzátor. Je to práve mladý nága, vďaka ktorému sa táto rôznorodá skupinka spojí. Každý zo štyroch spoločníkov je odlišný, čo je neraz zdrojom napätia. Tokkebi spovedá človeka a nerozumie jeho pohnútkam. Rekon je výbušný. No a nága zabúda, že ostatní nekomunikujú myšlienkami.
Tieto rozdiely sú mnohokrát zdrojom vyhrotených situácií. Tiež sú dôvodom, pre ktorý sa členovia družiny neustále dostávajú z dažďa pod ďalší odkvap. Rozprávanie má vďaka tomu výraznú komediálnu linku. Neprerastá do paródie, ale určite vyvolá nejeden úsmev. Nehovoriac o tom, že tieto trampoty zabezpečujú svižné tempo a autor vďaka nim môže čo-to odhaliť. Občas o postavách a ich motivácii, no viackrát ide o zákulisnú hru alebo intrigy.
Lee však drží opraty pevne v rukách. Rovnakou mierou buduje charaktery aktérov a opisuje dej. Čitateľ sa nemá čas nudiť a navyše sa miestami dobre pobaví. Nielen vďaka komickosti situácií, ale aj občasnej absurdnosti. Gradácia napätia a napínavý záver tiež nie sú príbehu na škodu. A keďže zmysel celého putovania ostáva záhadou, bude čakanie na pokračovanie veľmi dlhé.
V románe Věž srdcí spracoval autor dobre fungujúci námet s dobrodružnou výpravou. Napriek tomu pôsobí sviežo. Ponúka totiž svet vybudovaný na kórejskom folklóre a histórii. K tomu sa pridávajú aj komediálne prvky a rozprávačská obratnosť. A keďže zvláda venovať sa postavám i deju, poteší mnohorakých čitateľov.

3.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️🌟 This book is a feat of complex epic fantasy writing - Lee Young-Do being awarded the title the Korean Tolkien is not unwarranted!
That said, I really wanted to love this book. And I was enjoying it, but unfortunately there was some graphic violence that was so disturbing for me that I was unable to finish the book.
I feel I may try again one of these days - I have attempted to reach the publisher to discuss adding possible trigger warnings so that sensitive readers like myself can psychologically prepare and not be caught off guard by the violence. However I have not yet had a response after a couple weeks.
Without spoiling, I can share that one of the main characters of a different fantasy race is a cannibal towards one of the other main character’s fantasy races, the Nhaga.
There was a scene that was so violent that it literally made me physically nauseous and I had to stop reading.
I will share specific trigger warnings that don’t spoil anything, but they will be spaced far below, and on StoryGraph blocked out, of course.
This is a fascinating book that is part quest, part political intrigue and I wish I’d been prepared so that I could’ve been more prepared to handle the gritty violence and finish the book.
This review isn’t intended to dissuade any readers, but merely to help other Highly Sensitive People (which is a natural phenomenon that causes roughly a third of the population’s mirror neurons in their brain to process things twice as deeply and memorably than typical mirror neuron brains) like myself not be caught unawares.

The writing is quite good; it is a style of high fantasy that’s a little more distant from the character’s emotional journey - just a bit more of a classic writing style.
These books were originally published in Korea in 2003. A classic being translated to English for the first time, this is the first in a quartet.

I enjoyed this tremendously. Interesting characters and fascinating societies pull you right into this fantasy world of dragons and skyrays and demons. The solid plot propels you through the chapters, while the characters’ quirks provide the more than occasional giggle.
Tynahan is the funniest chicken-man I know.
