Order of the Blade #10

Shadows of Darkness

Rate this book
Hailed as a "paranormal star!" by J.R. Ward, USA Today bestselling author Stephanie Rowe continues to rivet readers with her sizzling Order of the Blade series about Calydon warriors, the intensely passionate immortals who have amassed their own "cult following"* with readers. Now comes their newest story, an explosive adventure in which passion ignites between a sinfully sexy immortal assassin on a final mission, and the woman fated to destroy him.

Chained to an ancient meat hook in an abandoned underground cave for over a century, former assassin Levi Hart has been focused on only one thing: surviving long enough to destroy the psychopath who once controlled him. His chance at freedom comes in the form of a sensual, desperate woman who will trade freedom for his services, the one thing he can't afford to give.

She is Maya Brennan, the achingly sensual queen of a kingdom sunk into a curse of darkness and destruction. Born to serve her people no matter what the cost, Maya cannot afford the all-consuming passion that Levi ignites in her, but without him, she has no chance to save those she loves. Will their need for each other propel them into their final destruction, or can love shatter the bonds fated to destroy them both?

5 STARS!!! Received an ARC copy of this book in the anthology Romancing the Paranormal and all I can say is WOW WOW WOW! While I have loved all of Stephanie Rowe's books that I've read, I have to say that the Order of the Blade series is by far my favorite of hers and Shadows of Darkness did not disappoint. This book introduces us to a new Calydon and Sheva - Levi and Maya who both feel that they either don't deserve or would never find happiness and/or love and in the end get their happily ever after. This is not just a love story but also a story of good versus evil and how much would one be willing to sacrifice for the greater good of others. This is book 10 in the Order of the Blade series and I highly recommend starting with the first book Darkness Awakened but be prepared to become addicted to these hot, sexy Calydons and their strong and sassy Shevas!

Shadows of Darkness by Stephanie Rowe: Wow! How I've missed the OOTB world and this book took me straight back into my happy place right from the very first word! Thrilling, intense, captivating are just a few of the words I would use to describe this story that I inhaled and left me breathless for more!

Such a touching, poignant story in that tough world, this leading couple face more than their fair share of tribulations that it feels like you've read a full length novel when you finish.

Fantastic read, can't wait for the next installment in this gripping series!

I have read every Order of the Blade book by Stephanie Rowe and I have to say that this novella does not disappoint. You are instantly drawn into Levi and Maya's story and you never want it to end. It may be a novella, but it reads like a full length novel. This series is by far one of my favorites and I can't wait to read what's next! Every story draws you in and has you thinking about the characters long after you've read the last sentence. I've never been disappointed in any Stephanie Rowe book, one of my all-time favorite authors!

Stephanie Rowe does it again! This Order of the Blade novella starts off running from page one, it is a fast paced page turner. I fell in love with Levi and Maya immediately, the connection and passion between them is heartfelt and powerful. I was totally immerged and did not put the book down until I was finished. If you are familiar with The Order of the Blade series, you will not be disappointed, and if you have never read anything else by Stephanie Rowe this novella will hook you for sure!

I want you, all of you. 5 stars

Your soul, your mind, and your body. HOLY AWESOMENESS BATMAN! This is one fracken amazing story! I was absolutely spellbound by this terrific story because it has everything I look for & love in a story! There is magic, love, finding your sheva (which was not at all what I thought it would be!) and so much more that all help to give the characters the power or the courage to at least try to fight the ties that bind, or at least the magical & fate/destiny ones! It has such a very rich storyline steeped with this deep character strength to it that pulls you in, fully immersing you into Maya & Levi's world. I find that this story, and quite obviously the series, is wholly unique with so many distinctive qualities & original elements to it that there is no way I could even hope to sum it up for you without giving anything away! There is a great storyline with lots of meat- proverbial & of the man type - and characters that have this strength, internally “His strength was pure male, a cauldron of sex, danger, and intimacy.” as well as physically. Then there is the magic, demons, humor, hot & smexy and oh so much more! Stephanie is one exceptionally gifted author! I love the depth to the storyline, to the characters, the history which obviously all ties in with the Order of the Blade series. However I was still able to read just this one story and be able to follow along and not feel lost, or like something was missing that was preventing me from enjoying this as a standalone book. In fact quite the opposite which is why, to me, this is a prime example of why I think that Stephanie is such a great author!! I not only was able to follow along and enjoy this series, I was able to get completely immersed into the story and the characters, root for them, curse the bad guy, etc. I was addicted from the start and was frantically trying to absorb every little bit of it, as well as trying to read it all before my tablet battery ran out, but at the same time I didn’t want to go to fast and miss something or rush the ending! (grumble grumble stupid power outages! mutter mutter) I haven't had the chance to read Stephanie's Order of the Blade series yet even though I have collected quite a few of her books already, I just haven't gotten to them...THAT IS ALL GOING TO CHANGE ASAP!!!

Phew! I’m done with the series…! Still, I don’t understand the very high rate given (above 4.10 in average for each book).

The fantasy world created by Ms. Rowe is quite unique but very repetitive. Could have been a much more interesting base if the characters were deeper, not so cheesy once they are in love (after a few days… hello?!), all the more when you know these guys are centuries old and had had a hard life. I had a problem with that.

I had a problem as well concerning the fact that all Order members meet their shevas in a very short time, although being 600 to 1,000 years old (except Thano, who is younger, but his story was not among the 10 books of the series). Not a single word either about why, all of a sudden, they meet their shevas, fully bond with them despite living centuries with strong and ruthless rules regarding the necessity to kill these women (when they are the sheva of an Order member). And, of course, all of them seem able to cope with that ill-fated destiny. Why, not a word about it either. They all say the curse is so strong that no one can survive it, even the strongest of the strong Calydon warriors. And yet, they all agree to take a leap of faith, based on what?! Would have been nice if Ms. Rowe had something in store to explain that sudden U-turn…

Whatever. I’m done with the series. One thing is sure: I’ll never again pick a romance book based on the average rating because when it comes to romance, readers seem to stop being critical.

Maya is desperate for help for her kingdom. She is so in need of help that she is willing to agree to the terms of an assassin. Levi has been chained for a century and his greatest desire is to kill the man who condemned him to this kind of life. They don't expect or want a connection but it is something they are going to have to deal with in addition to their other business.

I really enjoyed the story. Their first meeting sets the tone. They have this connection that shouldn't be there but can't be denied. Levi senses her and is surprised by how strong those feelings are as he has never been very interested in women. His life has been about killing. Maya is shocked by the psychic connection she feels for Levi and is scared about what the end result might be for acting on those feelings and completing the connection. They both are very passionate about what they care about and willing to sacrifice their lives if that is what is needed.

The story moves fast and keeps your attention. The author is excellent at building up the intensity which keeps you wanting to finish the story and see how it will all end. I read it straight thru the night. You expect a happy every after but it is not clear how that can be accomplished for them both.

I received a copy in return for a honest review.

Wow! What an awesome installment to the series! I've read every book in the Order of the Blade series and this one is one of the best. Stephanie Rowe has given my hope back in the series. I didn't enjoy the previous book as much and I was actually hesitant to pick this one up which was odd because I love this series. I wasn't sure if she was going to stray from her original story. The 9th book, Darkness Possessed really let me down and I wasn't sure if she would go back to how she used to develop characters but she brought it back in this one. Maya was a very refreshing character and I loved her. She was so quick witted, logical, strong, determined and playful. The only shevas that pleased me this much were Grace, Ana and Lily who were in the first three books. I'm really glad that I decided to finally read this novella. There was a lot of action that kept me wanting to read more and more. The love, dynamics and relationship between Levi and Maya was rejuvenating and I hope I get to see these two more in future books.

Maya and Levi have fantastic chemistry. I can’t help but love this story just for the love between the two of them. Levi is beyond sexy with a wounded, vulnerable past and darkness lurking within just begging Maya to banish it from his soul. And Maya is a once shy, overlooked second daughter just coming in to her own and finding her strength to seek help and fight the darkness. And all of those wonderful things almost overshadow all the faults of this story. Almost. But this story does indeed have a lot of faults. The villain is just so over the top cliché, he was almost twirling a black moustache. As usual in these stories, I caught them having sex at really odd inopportune moments (like the first time when they should have been on the run from the creatures or trying to find their friends, they suddenly decided to use sex to heal themselves -which is preposterous in itself. Not to mention that she also didn’t seem bothered in the slightest that she had ditched her companions). Then there’s the whole preposterous overarching predestined fate looming over the entire story. According to the destiny, when the warrior finds his Fated Mate, he is doomed to pair with her, and after the mating is complete, he will lose his mind and go into a killing frenzy with only his mate the only one able to stop him. And after she kills him, she will kill herself. I mean, seriously, if that were the case, then their race would have died out long time ago since the mate wouldn’t be around long enough to bare children. Another problem I had with this was I couldn’t tell when this was supposed to have been set. They were wearing modern clothes, like jeans, but yet, the world felt like a feudal system with horses being the mode of travel, and castles and not much in between except plains. But the story itself is a fun adventure, and the Shadow Wolves are deliciously scary. And the looming threat of the Warlord is fun as well, wondering how Maya will extricate herself from her deal.

Levi and Maya

We have not met these two in any of the previous books.

We get to see Rohan, Thano and Apollo again.

Levi has been bound underground for over a century. He's Caldyon but also has this power that cannot be destroyed by anyone but his Sheva.

In comes Rohan, Thano, and Maya. Levi instantly connects with her, realizing she's his soulmate. Maya needs protection, something is trying to kill her and the people in her kingdom.

They bothe need each other. They navigate their way through their relationship and troubles ahead to reach their hea.

Short and sweet

Very very quick paced as you can imagine with how short it is. Good enough read but lacked what the other books in the series had not that the characters weren't great or even the story line. maybe it's just to rushed for my liking. With all that said I really like the two lead characters it was worth the read to meet them 😊.

So I’ve got this on my DNF shelf since 2015 and, for the life of me, I cannot remember why?

Also it’s book ten and apparently I haven’t read any of the nine previous books. I don’t like to read books out of order and I’ve only ever done it with one series, so why the HELL is this book here??

Me@2015 Shan: what happened!!?

I got this book as part of a bundle. It was well written, but it’s number 10 in a series and I didn’t read the first nine so I felt a little lost.
The warrior premise sounds promising. JR Ward like the series so I bet it is better than good.
I recommend starting at the beginning.

GREAT READ...as always!!!!! Highly RECOMMEND!!!!

Loved it just as much as I did the other books in this series. This author never seems to disappoint me. I have been a huge fan of the Order of the Blade series from the very first book. Can't wait for the next book to come out. I love this series so much that I just keep reading them over and over each time a new one comes out in the series. I haven't even took out the time to start a different series by Stephanie Rowe. I believe it is time to try new series out though.

Shadow of Darkness by Stephanie Rowe

Levi Hart, a Calydon warrior, has been held chained in a cave for more than a century. When he hears a female voice whispering in his head, he feels an instant connection and desire.
Maya Brennan needs Levi to save her kingdom. While he can deny her nothing, they come to terms and he is freed from his chains. The dark shadow wolves that threaten Maya have a familiarity to Levi and he realizes there is a deeper sinister plot that Maya is unaware of.

This 160 page novella was quickly intense and moving. The hero has found his soul mate but fate says they will destroy each other. How can this possibly have a happy ending? You know of course it will, but the twists are many and worth reading until the end. A tragic couple that I was routing for. You can tell these are good people that deserve more fairness in their lives.

Excerpt
“He kissed her once, softly, his lips so gentle it was almost inconceivable that this brutal assassin was the one delivering such beautiful kisses. "But with you," he whispered against her mouth, "I feel like there's humanity within me. I feel my heart beat. I feel my soul stir. You make me feel alive, Maya, and that's simply you, because I'm too strong to be owned by the bond. I could stop what I feel for you, but I don't want to. I want to experience every single thing you give me, a thousand times over until there's nothing left in this world except how you make me feel."
Tears filled her eyes at his words. "That's very poetic for an assassin.”

Shadows of Darkness is the tenth book in the Order of the Blade series and is Levi and Maya's story. Although it can be read as a standalone, to fully enjoy and appreciate the book, I would recommend reading the previous books in the series.

Levi is a former assassin who has been imprisoned for a century. Maya is a princess fighting to save her kingdom, to do this she needs Levi's help.

This is a great, action packed, suspense filled story and a real page turner. Despite being a novella, Levi and Maya's characters were well developed and their relationship believable. The interactions between Maya and Levi were great, they had amazing chemistry, plenty of heat and the depth of their feelings for each other came across very well. I was desperate for Levi and Maya to beat the odds and get their HEA!

Shadows of Darkness is a great addition to the Order of the Blade series and I am eagerly awaiting the next instalment.

An ARC of Shadows of Darkness was generously provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.

BACK TO THE GREAT STORY BY STEPHANIE ROWE.....

I hate catching up with a series, it makes me wait for the next book and I'm impatient.

This was a great story and I hope we hear more about Levi. This group of Order of the Blade has lots of men I don't know and gives Ms. Rowe an unlimited source to continue this series. I am hoping we will hear more from the other group as well.

It seems to me that the first group is more.....modern? The second group is more paranormal and deals with the dark side. It is wonderful how Ms. Rowe has created 2 separate groups with well defined characters that you can root for and love. Each story is ultimately a romance but delivers so much more.

I am happy to recommend this series as a whole. It will give you hours of pleasure. Read them in order as they will be more enjoyable. KUDOS Ms. Rowe on a tale well told.

Not quite sure why this took so long for me to finish?

So the first 60% of the book:

• He escaped his prison and ended up on a beach with the girl.
• They had sex and talked about their issues
• They fell in love and started the sheva bond process.
• I love you, I will save you, you are the wind beneath my wings, blah blah blah

This happened all in one afternoon while naked on a beach.

• Thanos and Rohan are mentioned a little, the Order, barely.
• Who the hell are these characters anyways?!?!

Finally the action begins, shadow wolves come out of the woods, the bad guy follows, and it’s over.
So yeah.

I'm so disappointed that I've managed to catch up with this series. I discovered it a short time ago and started devouring it one book after another. I really love this series and I hope we'll get plenty more books.

Some of the books in this series are better than others (all were good, but some just that bit better). This was one of the good ones. It was a little odd, since we'd never met Levi before, but I took to him fairly quickly. The book was well written and engaging. I do wish it had been a little longer and allowed for a little more depth of Levi and Maya's characters and background. Still, it was a good enjoyable read, and now I'm impatient for the next book.

This was very different from the rest of the Order of the Blade stories. It started on a different way and ended differently as well.
I did get kinda confused as on what Levi is and his abilities and his weakness. As always, I would love it to be bigger, 'cause I wanted more of Levi and Maya's story!!!
Allow me to add that there was a point near the end, where I almost cried. It was sooooo touching, and no… no-one was about to die. It was just pure Love in its truest form.
I hadn't realised just how much I had missed OOTB stories, until I started SoD.

First time read by this author, really enjoyed it.

Maya a princess fighting to save her kingdom from evil sprit wolfs and Levi a former assassin held underground in chains for thousands of years. What could these two have in common, more than they realise. Levi guarantees to help Maya get to the person who hold the fate of her kingdom in his hands. It soon becomes apparent that they are soul mates but history dictates that he will go made she must kill him and then herself. Can these two fiery souls save a kingdom and each other with loosing their minds or their lives.

This is Levi and Maya’s story. He’s and assassin that’s been strung up in a cave for at least a hundred years and she’s in need of his help as a body guard, someone to keep her safely where she needs to go. This book is part of a rockin series with lots of action, surprises, humor and just enough sex to give the story the right amount of spice. I’m a big fan of Stephanie Rowe and she never disappoints. I highly recommend this book but, be sure to read the others in this series. I believe that you deserve to treat yourself and this series is a treat.

Stephanie at her usual greatness. Loved the character of Levi, so tough and manly and yet so protective, soft and gentle and tender where his woman is concerned. Maya so strong and dependable but showing its alright to let your guard down and let someone help.

It was great to see the old characters popping into the story as they are so relevant to the order of blade warriors (a team) and of course we love to see glimpses of them.

My only fault.............IT WAS TOO SHORT I wanted it to go on and on and on.
