This is another e-ARC that I received from (SF/F)or the culture. It’s a dark urban fantasy that centers around magic and revenge.

I believe I saw that this was an earlier release that later got reworked and released as a Wahida Clark Presents. Which is cool with me, I love when authors get a second chance at presenting what they really wanted. This release had very few errors and was concise, so it seemingly went well!

When the story begins we have a very timid, damaged, and trapped main character. Throughout the novel we get to see a change over time, where now our MC is strong, purposeful, energized. I think this speaks to the author’s abilities with character development. It’s not an immediate shift, we see the struggles, and that’s exactly what development looks like.

As an atmosphere I would relate this to a few things. It does have the whole hidden magic from the real world building like in Harry Potter (but no wands!), as a dark fantasy it has a grittier world feel kind of like Underworld with witches, and because of the deep rooted revenge quest it read to me like a magic The Revenant. And this very well could be a villain origin with its vengeful body horror.

For me, I will say the ended did wrap up a little too quickly. With a vast majority of the story taking place in a single setting, it just kind of slams you into the ending. If the overall climax had been mentioned earlier in the book, I think it would have fit into its trajectory better. But those are just my personal thoughts!

Absolutely worth your time, effort, and money to read this book.

When an attack leaves a woman for dead, her ability to survive her wounds spurs on a new kind of life in Zed Amadeo’s Resurrection.

One night Dina saw some people flying through the air on brooms, which was a shocking sight, and her noticing them caused these people to brutally attack her and leave her for dead; however, Dina manages to survive their attack, though she’s plagued with fear and feels isolated from her loved ones who don’t believe what she told them about her attackers. When a small creature visits her at night, listening to her story, Dina slowly begins to get pulled in to a world of magic that she never knew existed. Embarking on a journey to embrace the magic within her she seeks out answers about her abilities and becomes determined to seek revenge on those who’ve wronged her.

A secret underworld of magic and the story that’s slowly introduced in this first portion of the series has promise but it’s not quite developed to a point of being an overly compelling narrative that draws readers in deeply; from the start, the narrative feels a bit disjointed and lacks some context, particularly at the beginning, but it does present a relatively intriguing world, magic system, and premise for a larger story as this part progresses and sets up events to come. At this point, the characters don’t have much depth to them to engender reader investment in their wellbeing or fate, and Dina’s character is difficult to connect with; her sudden emotional swing in attitude from woe-is-me fearful to fiercely hell-bent on seeking revenge doesn’t feel organic or realistic and it’s almost as if these were two different characters that were smashed together instead of a demonstrable steady growth from one state to another as her motivational backstory.

Overall, I’d give it a 2.5 out of 5 stars.

"Resurrection" is the first part of the Kindred series that was a breath of fresh air in my reading. As someone who really isn't a fan of urban-fantasy or most types of low-fantasy, I found a few elements in this book that made it unique to me. One of my biggest beefs in any book are stupid characters. I don't care about complex the plot is, or how well it unravels into a masterfully-crafted world. If the characters that are subjected to it are complete idiots, it's just not enjoyable. While this book starts off pretty quickly, I was kind of afraid for the first few pages. I think it started a bit too abruptly for me, as the lack of context in some areas made it a bit of a strange first few pages.

This is quickly corrected as light is shed throughout the rest of the novella, along with one of my favorite characters in this type of fantasy book being unraveled. Dina isn't completely stupid at the expense of delivering easy exposition to the reader, the people she meets have clear and understandable motives and you're not bogged down by too much transitional areas in the book. I could easily see how this could have dragged on and maybe threaded a bit more details in it, but it chiseled the conflict and intensity off the bat to set up for what could be a really interesting series.

Let me say right now that I rate certain pieces differently by their format and genre. When it comes to long-form novels versus fast-segmented novels, I rate something like Resurrection - especially as part 1 of a series - the same way I'd rate a television show pilot. It's not supposed to end with us figuring out what Rosebud is after three hours and having a moment, it's supposed to generate interest for the coming parts while as a stand-alone piece being worthwhile, which it certainly is. It's a page-turner that's setting up to provide a dark descent into both a new world with it's own conflict.

What gives this a 4/5 to me is the pacing is fast but not a run-on sentence of random things happening. Interesting characters with intuitive dialogue. Clever use of magic that's not too over the top. Interesting character development and unlike other's in the genre, this one is pretty graphic and takes dark turns. I think the pacing and delivery of some detail just isn't the way that I'm used to it and I think the environment could have been explored a bit more - even for a first part of the series.

If you read this with the intent of an urban-fantasy that's trying to captivate you into a dark atmosphere, given the length you probably have nothing to lose, I'd say give it a read.

There are a lot of well-written, well-edited books available for free and low price on Kindle from Amazon. This however, is not one of them. The main character is hard to get to know, let alone like, the other characters are flat and boring, and the text is very slow and hard to read. I kept reading mostly because it was short and I'd gotten a copy for free. I think the world that Amadeo has created has a lot of promise, but the writing needs a lot more polish before it's ready for publication. Unfortunately, it's already been published. But maybe Amadeo will release an updated version in the future.

Resurrection is a short read and packed with a magical punch. To put it short and sweet, revenge and girl power with magic working together makes this story one powerful book.

I am going to read this book more than once! Well worth a 5/5. I am anticipating the rest of the of the series.
