As soon as I read the description of this book, I knew I had to read it! Instead of the usual twenty-something man being isekai’d to another world, Eldric is a butler sent to clean up the mess of the end of the world–what could possibly go wrong?
Eldric was by far my favorite character. His thoughts, reactions, and outlook on the people and the shenanigans around him made the world come to life--I mean, it would be hard relating to a world with magic and monsters, but add in an impeccable, unshakeable (on the outside) butler with a little sass and lots of focus and you're in for a great adventure with high stakes! I enjoyed all of the Sancrief family as well, and appreciated the different point-of-views to build up the world.
Speaking of the world, the Overworld was a character in and of itself! With the Worldsong and other qualities, it was fun for me to imagine playing a video game with a huge open world concept as I read. I am hoping for more to come in this world, either with Eldric as the reader’s guide, or other characters in the book.
Sometimes, the writing and formatting was a little repetitive with single sentences being whole paragraphs for half-pages at times. It took me out of the narrative a bit especially at the beginning, but I tried thinking of it as a point-and-click game with quick lines to keep the narrative moving and that helped. What kept me turning the pages was wondering what happened next, and how Eldric would respond to challenges.
Overall, Overworld is a great read in the LitRPG genre; it's a great introduction for curious readers just being introduced to LitRPG, but it's also really enjoyable for fans of Dungeon Crawler Carl and He Who Fights with Monsters.

Will Wight’s “Overworld” is an interesting entry into the LitRPG/progression-fantasy space, and I can see why so many readers will be tempted by the premise alone: an unflappable royal butler, Eldric Altmoore, yanked into a collapsing, ever-shifting world and given just ten days to protect a little girl who could decide the realm’s fate. Eldric’s voice and “proper order above all else” perspective were easily the highlight for me. Wight gets a lot of mileage out of making a butler the hero, and I think that angle stays charming throughout the story.
That said, the book didn’t fully click for me. I loved the concept, but because I didn’t fully connect with the supporting characters, the larger plot points often felt more like structure than emotional payoff, and that made the pacing feel slower than I wanted. Instead of building momentum into a fast-paced adventure, parts of it read more like an extended video game tutorial… repetitive in places, like it was still teaching the rules when I wanted the story to trust its setup, raise the stakes, and let the monster conflict finally take over.
Overall, it’s a solid, middle-of-the-road read: worth checking out if you’re already a LitRPG fan (especially if you enjoy structured “missions” and ticking-clock setups), but if you need richer character dynamics or faster escalation to stay invested, this one may feel like it’s missing that extra spark.

The character development is top-tier—I was on the edge of my seat for the Sancriefs and Eldric with his blessings and feeling rage toward the antagonist. Plus, in true Will Wight fashion, the end-of-book bloopers are just as hilarious as ever. If you love LitRPG or stories about characters forced out of their comfort zones, go preorder this immediately! Available in hardcover and audiobook. This book was so fun! It's a lighthearted and quick read and delivers pretty much exactly what the description promises: Eldric, a butler, is transported to a magical world where he has to protect a kid from monsters and villains.
I feel like this book executed a ridiculous premise really well. The butler is a very funny and engaging character that has you rooting for him right away. The pacing is also pretty quick (which works well for this story) and the writing is easy to follow, so I read most of it in a single day.
I had a lot of fun reading it and will be keeping an eye out for comedic stories from this author in the future.

What a nice breath of fresh air with a new main character type. The writing itself got a bit repetitive a la modern Netflix but the story kept moving and I stayed interested. Worth the read if you like litRPGs!

an easy and fun read. it has the smallest amount of litrpg elements, and just enough bite to keep it from being labeled cozy fantasy. also has the usual will wight bloopers at the end, one of which made me chuckle out loud.
has a definite ending with the tiniest tease of more to come.
