2.5 I thought this one started strong. It had a plot that sucked me in. It’s the last half of the book that ruined it for me. Plus, the hero Cedric was not redeemable IMO

(Possible spoilers ahead)

The book opens where the heroine, Alice, is in some type of trial. She’s being accused of killing a council member and conspiring with the “black witches”
Alice yells out that it was Victoria who did it. Victoria is her sister (or half-sister, not sure). Victoria plays the perfect, innocent victim and yells out that the baby Alice is pregnant with is NOT Cedric’s. Cedric is the hero and he’s an alpha king. Alice is his fated mate.

They bring in the head white witch and she confirms that Victoria is right and the baby is not Cedric’s (it’s a lie). Everybody wants Alice killed. Cedric sends her to a cell for the time being so he can think. He’s cruel. Anyway, Victoria comes later and removes Alice from the cell and takes her into the woods. Victoria wants to kill Alice to get her powers. Cedric felt Alice's emotions through the bond, so he’s almost at the site…so Victoria’s plan is ruined. Victoria sets a fire to kill Alice. When Cedric makes it, Victoria is also caught in the fire. Cedric chooses to save Victoria. 🥴
Alice miscarries the baby, and Alice dies by burning to death.

————

Alice wakes up and it’s the day of her marriage to Cedric. ALICE WAS REBORN!
Alice is no longer the sad, pitiful heroine; now she’s mad asf, she’s determined to get pregnant, and leave Cedric before all the events happen. All she wants is the baby she lost.

So some background info
Victoria was married to Cedric’s brother. The brother was dying and he made Cedric promise to look after Victoria. He has no feelings for her, but he lets Victoria manipulate him. He’s a HUGE DUMBARSE. He’s also very cruel to Alice.

Victoria wants Cedric. She wants to be Queen Luna. Cedric is completely oblivious to Victoria being like a cat in heat for him. Cedric caters to Victoria’s every demand.

Alice has always been in love with Cedric. She was shocked when the fated mates hit them when she turned 18. Alice has a huge birthmark on her face and the whole pack thinks she’s cursed. Her parents, Victoria, Cedric, and basically everybody treat her like gutter trash.

So we follow Alice in this new timeline, but we also hear about the past timeline. Alice will do some things differently, which causes Cedric to act differently than the first timeline BUT essentially, they usually turn out the same. In the first timeline, Cedric deserved a steel rod through his head. The things he did to Alice or let Victoria do were straight up RAGE!
But he wasn’t much better in the second timeline.
For example: in BOTH timelines he felt sorry for Victoria being sick so he was manipulated into letting Victoria have the queen’s bedroom. The only difference, in the first one, he moved Alice to a dank room. In the second, he moved her into a decent room beside him.
In the first timeline, Victoria ruined their wedding because she was sick. Alice cried and everybody made fun of her. Cedric didn’t fuxk her until 3 days later. In the second, Victoria still interrupted the wedding, but Alice was like “IDC, FUXK OFF CEDRIC” and that bothered Cedric. He decided to go boink Alice that night.
(There are a lot of events shown of Cedric being cruel to Alice. This is only a small sample of what he does to her)

We get Cedric’s POV and we find out he actually does as Alice (😱), but his dad taught him that fated mates was a curse. I absolutely hated Cedric. I wanted him dead. ☠️
I wanted him to die a painful death. I hated him so much that he could never be redeemed. He was straight up cat vomit.

So yeah, the first half was definitely 4 stars for me.
Then the back 1/2 came. Ugh. 😩

We finally get to the “death day” (or the day Alice was reborn in the first timeline)
We meet Adrian right before the death. I thought to myself YESSSSSS A NEW MMC. Nope. Booooo

Adrian was in the first timeline but Alice never met him. In this new one, she did. He was fascinated by Alice. When Victoria manufactures an event that leads Alice to her death place, Adrian is there to save her. Alice also rejects Cedric because she thinks he betrayed her again. Adrian gets her out of there.

Cedric was trying to save Alice but the witches prevented him from making it on time. I did laugh when he had to experience the pain of Alice’s rejection. GOOD 👍 he deserves way more.

Anyhoo, Alice wakes up at Adrian’s castle (yes he’s an alpha king too) and that’s when we find out that Adrien is actually Alice’s brother. 🙄 Alice is some powerful person. Alice’s mom and dad were worried about the witches trying to drain her powers, so they had her powers BINDED. The “birthmark” actually was the binding spell. That explains why the birthmark has been fading. Now it’s gone. Alice happens to be the most beautiful woman in the kingdom now. (My eyes almost rolled straight out of my head) The parents tried to hide her but she was kidnapped and ended up with the crappy parents/Victoria.
We get a happy family reunion between Alice and her real, loving parents.

The lump, Cedric, has been looking for Alice for 2 months. He arrives to broker a deal for help with the witches. Surprise! Alice is there. He grovels, I guess. 🙃 The parents put him in some type of hunger games so he has to prove himself. Idk it was dumb. I’ll admit that at this point, I kind of checked out of this book and was ready for it to end.
Eventually, Alice forgives Cedric.

They have the final battle, which is where we find out the white witches were the bad witches and the black witches were the good witches. Victoria was a bad witch. She is brutally ☠️ by Alice. Thank you, author!
Cedric is wounded but he survived. 🙄
Alice returns with Cedric to their kingdom. She gives birth to Ethan. 2 years later, HEA with interrupted smex by Ethan.

If I was rating this against just other shifter books, I’d rate this maybe 3.5 stars. Against all books in general, a 2.5. I personally felt the MMC was irredeemable. It’s hard to come back from a hero leaving his fated mate to burn to death while saving another woman.

needs ALOT of work

Characters, plot, tone, everything needed to undergo a major overhaul. This read like a first draft of a wattpad story. The excessive use of exclamations gave the story such an informal, almost text message feel. The fmc being as naive and affected as she was when it came to Cedric even knowing everything that happened her emphasized stupidity rather than bravery. The girl wore her emotion and escape plan on her sleeve and she wonders how she gets caught?

Nothing special about Cedric. He’s just your run of the mill misogynistic steaming pile of garbage with the most unwanted and pointless purpose.

Terrible main characters

The FMC was absolutely deplorable and stupid. She had a perfectly good escape and she purposefully placed herself and the person helping her in danger for absolutely no reason at all! The started off promising but the more the story went on the worse it became. I don’t recommend this book it’s more RAGE bait than anything.

Alice and Cedric’s story is a heartbreaking, strength, determination, resilience, courage, loyalty, but Alice gets another opportunity on her life,.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

overall intriguing

It was a bit long. Overall I liked how the story line played out. Some of the storyline I expected from this genre and some I was surprised at. Their dynamic had ups and downs.

I love second chance books. It was fun to read on where she came back to life. Does need some work, over all a fun, simple read.
