Lea of Montreau has a stark choice: marry, produce an heir, or forfeit her keep. A proud leader, she's prepared to do whatever it takes to protect her people. It seems fate is in agreement when a stranger approaches...
Warrior Jared of Warehaven was once Lea's betrothed. Now that Lea's future is under threat she can't become emotionally involved with Jared again. But he has plans of his own, and he intends to use every seductive trick he knows to get Lea to comply....
Denise Lynn lives in NW Ohio with her husband, son and slew of 4-legged "kids". She has been an avid reader of romance novels for many years, travelling to lands and times filled with brave knights, courageous ladies and never-ending love between the pages of those wonderful books.
She writes medieval romances set in England, Ireland, Normandy, France and a few fictitious islands in the waters surrounding Great Britain. When not writing historical romances, she can be found hiking, baking, sitting in front of a sewing machine, or snipping herbs for various edible and not-so-edible recipes.
This was my first introduction to Harlequin romances & it didn't work out so well. The writing was way better than I expected it to be from a line of books that I consider literary Lifetime. My problem was that I found the h/h very unlikeable. The hero, Jared, is such a douche. He's always plotting about how to get back at our heroine, Lea, just because she broke off their betrothal. I don't mind a little bitterness from characters but he went out of his way to be an asshole towards Lea. Your supposed to be this badass warrior fighting for the love of your country, yet your running around crying over some chick who left you 5+ years ago? Seriously? As for our heroine, Lea, she was beyond TSTL. She always ran into situations half-cocked & NEVER thought anything through. I spent the majority of the book wanting to smack her upside the head for being such a dummy & putting her people at risk over her whims. It got to the point where I was happy Jared was such a douche towards her. If I was him, Id've knocked her down a well & been done.
While this wasn't a good start for me, I am determined to find a HQ I like! I know there is an awesome HQ waiting for me under all the suckassitude! Thank God my local librarian is obessed with Harlequin or I might actually have to spend CASH on my quest.
Thank you so much for the rec, UM. I have officially had my HQ cherry popped & I only feel a tad used & dirty.
Lady Lea of Montreau is newly widowed, and while she’s been able to avoid taking sides in the battle for the throne between Empress Matilda and King Stephen, things are starting to heat up and she knows it’s only a matter of time before someone tries to take over her lands.
After Lea left him standing at the altar four years ago, Lord Jared of Warehaven is looking forward to taking control of Montreau, and in the process, seeking revenge for his broken heart. However, what neither Jared nor Lea were expecting was how deeply attracted to one another they still were. But miscommunication all those years ago has left them untrusting of one another and so not only are they fighting against greedy relatives and underhanded political maneuverings, they are also fighting against each other. Until they are able to set aside past hurts and learn to work together, trust one another, Montreau lands are at risk of falling into enemy hands and Jared and Lea are at risk of never finding the happiness that should have been, and still could be, theirs.
This was much better than I had anticipated it would be. Despite the shorter page count, the story is well defined and the characters fully developed. The writing - either narrative or dialog - didn’t have that early historical dialect or flavor I usually see in historical romance novels, but all the same the story flowed well and was an enjoyable read.
loosely linked to short story Wedding at Warehaven in Hallowe'en Husbands
Medieval
Lea of Montreau has a few option since her husband's death. She can marry again which she really doesn't want after her first horrible marriage. No one in the Keep really mourns the passing of their Lord. She can prove to the King that she is carrying the heir and new Lord, which is hard to do when maritial relations has been nil. Her final optioon would to be to give up the Keep and plummet her people into a senseless war. She has very little time to decide. Two warring royals both want her Keep which has been neutral up to this point. One sends a warrior to help "protect her and the Keep" while one sends her despised brother-in-law to help her find a new husband.
Jared of Warehaven easily takes control of the Keep at his Queen's command. He wants to take his revenge out on Lea who broke his heart in the past but he is definitely still drawn to her, especially after Lea practically throws herself at him on his arrival. However, she quickly changes her mind. Lea was thinking it would be easy to get pregnant by Jared but after the way he makes her heart pound she decides that it is to risky. Her heart hurt before but if she allowed herself to become involved with him this time, she fears her heart would be broken beyond repair. Their passion is hard to deny though.
Her brother-in-law shows up shortly after Jared with a man who has the permission of the King to "court" her. Lea has no idea how to fix things so that she isn't forced into marriage and her foolish actions get her into even deeper trouble.
I admit, I wasn't in love with the beginning of this book but the ending more than made up for it. Lea's actions sometimes irratated me. Her inability to get past her fears, her stubborness, and her foolish plans had me shaking my head. Jared definitely had me on his side shortly after he entered the story. It didn't take all that long before I wasn't able to put the book down. I stayed up until after 3 a.m. and don't regret the lost sleep at all. I have coffee to get me through the day. LOL
I felt like I was reading a book in the middle of a series, rather than the first one. It was okay. For a brain-candy quick read, it was fine. There just seemed to be a lot of assumptions made by the author, that the reader would know information that wasn't included.
I could not put this one down. I've only read a few Medieval HRs and I can honestly count on one hand which of them I genuinely loved. This one is another that pleasantly surprised me, plus the ending was just perfect. The chemistry between Lea and Jared was intense from the first page. Ms. Lynn's writing was perfectly done, so I found myself crying along with Lea and understanding her fears, although they seemed unrealistic to Jared. I will definitely read this one again.
Note: This book is great for hardcore Harlequin fans and first time readers.
I only got about 25% of the way through this before the characters began so irritating me that I just couldn't go on. While I could kind of like the heroine, the hero is a complete jerk and was quickly approaching irredeemable for me. Then the secondary woman showed up and I just didn't have the patience to continue on.
